After reading the reviews we have to say that we were very disappointed with our visit. We had the 3-course menu which was adequate but not at all exciting. Whilst each course was well cooked, the sauces and accompaniments lacked subtlety and flavours were not well balanced. Difficult to justify a Michelin star on this performance. Over the years we have used a number of Michelin restaurants but sadly this rates as the worst we have visited. It was highly priced and certainly not worth the money we were charged.

Simply outstanding. Perfectly executed meals from a limited menu based on what is in season and best. Impressive wine list for a boutique venue. Friendly service. Very comfortable and clean accommodation so you can make a weekend of it and best of all, have the breakfast! Highly recommended.

Very small – you really have to book. It’s just the chef and his wife who does front of house. Superb tasting menu with very friendly personal service. Easily worthy of the Michelin star. We stayed over (they have a few rooms). The bedroom is luxurious and had some lovely touches such a tin of freshly baked chocolate cookies. Breakfast, also cooked by the Michelin-starred chef, was also superb with freshly squeezed juice, home baked bread and the puffiest, buttery croissants.

Just fabulous! The tasting menu was superb, with each course perfectly flavoured and balanced, and leading onto the next. Each dish introduced and served by Kevin. Jacki is so welcoming that you feel like a special guest. They certainly merit their Michelin Star. (We did not stay as we have family nearby.)

We decided last minute we would like to try this restaurant and we were fortunate that due to last minute cancellations they were able to accommodate us. The dining area is intimate, we were four couples in total but didn't feel too close to the other guests. We were greeted by the chef Kevin, who made us very welcome, his wife Jacki front of house soon made an entrance and was equally friendly. The wine list is extensive, unfortunately my partner was driving so we were unable to take full advantage of their wines. We did enjoy a glass of champagne each plus a half bottle of wine. We enjoyed the tasting menu, which started with Iced Ginger and Lemongrass Tea a perfect palate cleanser. This was followed by various courses all delicious with exquisite flavours ( Menu available on web site) Each course was served at the table by Kevin with an explanation of the ingredients. I particularly enjoyed the Monkfish with Satay sauce, which was spicy. I actually enjoyed all the courses, the attention to detail and presentation was second to none. Kevin and Jacki ensure that the dining experience is first rate and I would certainly recommend eating there and look forward to another visit. Thank you for a splendid dining experience.

It was a nice meal, we enjoyed the food and the occasion, but was it spectacular? Sadly, no. The problem with these types of places is the expectation. When they are beefed up so much, the customers expect so much. I can honestly say there are many places in Norfolk where one can get better food, in a more relaxed environment, at a much better price. Personally if I ran the Neptune, I'd get rid of the star, just serve good basic grub and do it well. People would leave far happier. That said - I'm not really complaining, the food was good, the service was good, the place is good, but given the price we had to pay, just cos of the star, its not somewhere we would opt to go back to. If some friends went and asked us to join them, then we would, but just would not choose to go there for another night out.

My wife and I stayed at The Neptune on a Friday and Saturday night, having breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning and the full Tasting Menu experience with my wife’s Father and Step-Mother, who live nearby, on the Saturday evening. The room was huge and beautifully prepared. Breakfast was superb both days. The Saturday dinner was as good as we had hoped. Jacki welcomed us warmly and we felt comfortable from the very start of our visit. We were all in awe of Kevin’s skills as a chef. It seems incredible that Kevin produces such beautiful food for everyone on his own. This was a very special experience. Thank you to Kevin and Jacki.

Eating and staying at the Neptune is one of our most precious treats. Jacki and Kevin are excellent hosts. The rooms are spotlessly cleaned and well equipped; with quality teas and coffees plus wonderful home made biscuits. The evening meal is created exactly as you'd expect of a Michelin star restaurant: each course is designed to make the ingredients sing to their best. You'll often be served by chef Kevin himself! Jacki is always on the move between tables. Her knowledge of the wine list is well worth exploring, and she recommends by what works and not what is the most expensive. Tables are always yours for the night so you can relax. We're great fans of the coffee and pastries to finish the night... even if we are already full. Breakfast is exactly what you'd expect: cereal, fruit juice, toast, etc except this one has a proper chef creating it. We keep going back!

We have been coming here about once year for years; one of the greatest charms is how nothing appears to change - except of course it does. Kevin's cooking goes from strength to strength - nothing has ever connected so well with my inner glutton than the perfectly cooked lamb cutlet with a glass of lamb consommé on the side, that we had last night. Wow - can't wait to come back!

Amazing experience. We stayed yesterday and ate the taster menu last night. Food was (as expected from a Michelin star restaurant) impeccable - what makes them stand out if the faultless hospitality of Kevin & Jacki who are very present. Neither can do enough to make you feel welcome and we very much enjoyed the little touches. Our room was very well appointed, tastefully furnished and immaculately clean. Kevin carried our luggage & showed us to the room and explained how the coffee machine worked and where to find the WiFi code for example. We were given a flask of fresh milk (which we would normally reques). Just outside the room is a tray from which you can restock tea-bags or coffee pods - they've really thought of everything a guest might want. The meal was superb. The restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere and my husband was offered the opportunity to taste an unfamiliar wine before purchasing. We had a comfortable night's sleep and a beautiful breakfast this morning before leaving. At no point were we rushed and Kevin & Jacki found time to chat to all of they guests.

We booked for the tasting menu and were not disappointed. The Neptune is a tiny restaurant catering post Covid for under 15/20 covers. The whole setup seemed to be run by a husband and wife team - and they were good. The menu was exactly as shown on the website and every mouthful was a delight. The portions, for a tasting menu, were generous and ingredients include lobster, monkfish and turbot in different courses. Our bottle of wine was carefully poured to last the entire meal with no obvious up-selling. We spent about 3 hours over our meal and( we are in our 70’s!) we left feeling that we had good value both in quantity and quality. If you are in North Norfolk with £100 per person to spend on a meal then, in my opinion, you would be hard pressed to better this restaurant. No negatives at all !

I love nothing more than a tasting menu and was very excited to sample this one and at £100 maybe my expectations were too high hoping each course would have the Wow factor , and most did , but not all . The pre desert and desert were disappointing , the pre dessert was far too similar in flavour and texture to the actual dessert and neither were particularly attractively presented unlike some of the other courses . Interesting wine list and well priced .

What a superb meal we had with our adult sons and daughter - in- law in April 23. Such a relaxed atmosphere and friendly, personal service from Kevin and Jacki. None of the pretentious service associated with some Michelins where customers are patronised by staff asking "how are we guys?" and "instructing " us on what wine we should drink, how marvellous the food is and of course how privileged we are to be there !! . Such stuff isn't necessary when the service is understated, informal and delivered to the table by the owners . Just perfect to be served by a couple who have held Michelin stars for 20 years and yet serve contemporary food , know their stuff and give great service in a relaxed informal atmosphere. My husband and I visited The Neptune for a treat. We are slowly working our way through Michelin star restaurants and this was next on our list. And as lovers of the British seaside, we tied it in with a visit to the sea. I have to say, we were pleasantly surprised by the small, yet homely setting. The coziness of just six tables gave the restaurant a lovely feel, yet the tables were far enough apart not to feel cramped or part of other people’s conversations! However, having eaten in several Michelin star restaurants before, I have to say, this isn’t the experience we expected. Small details were missed. Such as, I ordered a drink that never came, other tables received their bread with the beetroot course & ours was served as an individual course. It isn’t a “stuffy” place. It’s very relaxed and the owner was very friendly and chatty. I must stress, we couldn’t fault the food. It was absolutely divine. We’d highly recommend the tasting menu. The pork, in particular, was delicious. All in all, we had a pleasant evening and would recommend the food. But if you’re expecting fine dining and being spoilt, this isn’t the place for you.

I booked this as a surprise for my Husband to celebrate his 40th Birthday. We stayed overnight in a deluxe room which was just lovely, the bed was massive and a nice cosy way to spend the evening after what was the most amazing tasting menu! The room has lots of quirky furniture. The only downside for me was the shower, I couldn't quite get the right temperature for me, it was either too hot or too cold. And I like the little feminine touches in the bathroom in case you forget the essentials or are caught short. My husband is allergic to shellfish and they accommodated him really well, changing a course completely for him and removing the fish from another course and adding in something else. The bar had lots of choices of wine, gin, beers, etc. My husband even enjoyed a bottle or 2 of the chef's favourite beer. A thoroughly wonderful way to spend a Birthday

The food is very good but not Michelin. The room was clean and reasonably comfortable but nothing special at all.I wasn't expecting to have to knock on the kitchen door to ask twice each day for fresh milk for tea in the room and we fancied a drink before dinner on the Saturday of our visit but there was no staff at all available. We went next door to the Caley Hall Hotel which was very nice with lovely staff and a nicely pulled pint.In general the weekend was a very, very expensive disappointment. Not a huge menu, but carefully constructed, and none the worse for that. All the dishes we had were excellent in all respects and good wine suggestions to complement each. Highly recommended.

We visited The Neptune on a Saturday evening to celebrate my husband's birthday. We were underwhelmed and a bit disappointed. The welcome was luke warm, although the staff gradually warmed up as the evening went on. Having said that it is clear that they are not professionally trained.

Stayed in the cottage for 7 nights in October 2019 . First time we had done self catering. This was not a problem! Greeted by the owner who showed us round the cottage , the fridge had all the ingredients for a splendid breakfast plus a quality bottle of wine. The cottage is over 3 floors and can accommodate up to 5 people. It was tastefully furnished and we were very comfortable. It was spotless . The kitchen was equipped with every imaginable piece of equipment too. The location is ideally suited to all the places of interest in North Norfolk. I have already recommended this place to many friends.

A small place (14 covers) with a short menu (four items per section) which pretty well guarantees serious attention to each item.

My wife and I visited here as I'd bought a tasting menu dinner for her for our 1st wedding anniversary. The option to buy it as a voucher is nice as you can have something to give as a physical gift.

Took my husband here for a birthday treat. Although he loves his food he does not enjoy the fussy theatre of food that you can get in some Michelin starred restaurants. What you get here is clearly well presented superb tasing food. We tried food we had not had before ie red mullet escabeche, and it was delicious.

Loved love loved it. Myself and the husband started to make a regular occurrence in having a Michelin meal a year at the beginning of September as a treat. I was surprised when this restaurant was suggested to us as we drove by so many times and never knew is there.

We had the good fortune to stay two nights here, eating here on our first night. This restaurant with rooms is charming and the owners are exceptionally welcoming. The food was delicious and well thought out. The scallop raviolo was a particular highlight. The wine list was comprehensive and fairly priced. Breakfast was well prepared and wholesome. Most importantly the food was super, and the whole stay was a treat. A must to return.

Four of us enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Neptune’s. The service was delightful, low key but with astute anticipation of our needs.

We visited the Neptune 2 years ago and loved it. On our return visit this time taking friends for a special occasion, the quality of food, accommodation and service remains outstanding. The taster menu was a marvellous treat for the palette. Thank you

Being able to walk to The Neptune, on a warm evening in July, in England, was the making of a memory in itself! Add to that the v warm welcome from the hosts, plus that feeling that we knew we were going to be spoilt, and all we had to do was enjoy it!

We’re great fans and regulars to Morston Hall but never been to The Neptune as it’s that bit too far. Anyhow we went with friends, stayed and had a tremendous time. Boy do Kevin and Jackie work hard with the quality and attention to detail shines through. The rooms are not sumptuous but well done with that attention to detail. The food was tremendous. The wine list is not exhaustive but very well considered (an Italian is the most expensive red unusually).

Food: innovative, never gimmicky, varied menu, local produce, always perfectly judged. Wines: wide choice, excellent provenance, knowledgeable advice available. Front of house: welcoming, relaxed, expert. 5* perfect, which is why we travel for hours across England to eat here!

They’re a welcoming friendly couple so it’s painful to write such a critical review. I’ve hesitated but eventually decided that if Tripadvisor is to succeed then honest reviews, both good and bad, must be written and published. There appear to be enough 5 star reviews for The Neptune that you can risk ignoring our view if you want, but here goes:-

Would be a half decent pub if the landlord had manners & was polite. Never known such shocking customer service & disgusting manners. Avoid, use pubs within Downham Market.

We were round almost all Kings Lynn looking for an independent coffee shop with whole milk not semi. This lovely little place did a lovely whole milk latte and gorgeous Portuguese pastries. Very friendly and great ambience
