Was delivered an incorrect drink and when rectified, it was promptly ‘slammed’ down on the table in front of us with no apology. After notifying the owner there had been a heavy box underneath our feet under the table, it was quickly dismissed. Not the service expected and sadly we will not return.

Did not expect the burgers to be gourmet: Proper chicken and beef patties, complete with a brioche bun. The dirty fries were amazing and come in large portions. Loved the milkshakes, served by friendly staff. We will be returning.

We ordered two full English breakfasts it took around 40 minutes. No one apologised or let us know it was going to take a while. We had to ask for the toast multiple times and it came 10 minutes after the breakfast. The young brunette waitress was very rude and didn’t say a word when she put the toast down. By the time the breakfast came the cafe was half full so I’m not sure what the hold up with the toast was. Terrible service but the food was nice.

We found this little gem whilst debating where to get a bit of breakfast and a coffee. We had two tasty lattes served in mugs and not those awful tall glass cups that so many places use!We had a breakfast bacon & tomato bap plus a breakfast sausage bap. The quality of the ingredients was excellent with the right amount to fill the baps. All was cooked fresh to order. Which gave us time to witness the great teamwork and customer service, all while complying with covid rules and with a smile. If we are ever in the area again we will call again, meantime we highly recommend a visit.

We went to Java this morning and had an amazing English breakfast. The standard of all items were excellent and the breakfast was very reasonably priced. Java is a place where you should go to more than once because of the standard of food. Wouldn't recommend anywhere else in Whitby for breakfast having visited Java.

Came to Whitby for a fleeting visit with my boyfriend and I am so glad we came here for brunch! It was actually recommended to us by The Whitby Deli just up the road. I had the 'Texan pancakes' (who knew fried eggs on pancakes would be so good?!) and my boyfriend had the smashed avo on toast with tomatoes and feta. Cannot fault either breakfast - both freshly prepared and arrived really quickly. The small touch of serving our tap waters with lemon and ice was also appreciated (my sister saw the photo and asked if we were having G&Ts with our breakfast - haha). Will definitely be back next time we're in Whitby - thank you!

I am never normally one to complain, in fact I don’t think I’ve ever complained or written a review, but I am shocked & appalled by the experience & customer service I have just had. My friend & me went into Java this afternoon, I ordered a butter beer shake, the woman behind the till looked around and said ‘oh I’ve never done one of those’ then proceeded to try to make it, we weren’t asked if we were sitting in or taking away, she presumed we were taking away as she started to make it before taking payment and left me standing there the whole time. Eventually she asked for £3.95, I gave her a £20 note, she gave me £3.25 back, which at the time I didn’t count properly and thought was just change for a fiver. I said ‘oh sorry I gave you £20’ so she then gave me a further £15 back, which means she only charged me £1.75. I then ordered on behalf of my friend that had gone to sit down to maybe hint we weren’t taking away, I ordered her a baileys iced coffee. She then started to make the drink again so i said I’d wait for it over at the table, as she had given me my drink and I didn’t want to wait another 5 minutes at the counter with people behind me. I took a drink of my ‘butter beer shake’ and realised it was a plain milkshake that tasted like it just had cinnamon in it, with chocolate sprinkles on top. (Nothing like a butter beer shake). My friends drink was then ready and the lady then asked a different customer for the payment (£4.95). A lady then told her it was for us and we were sitting down waiting for it, which the woman behind the till replied ‘no they’re taking away’. Anyway, my friend went over and got her drink and brought it to the table. It was half full, warm and tasted like a weak watery coffee. I waited until she had no orders to make, and took my friends drink to her and said it was warm and not what we asked for. She then told me ‘it’s warm because the ice has melted’ (she put no ice in it). I told her she didn’t put ice in it, but said I didn’t want another making and asked if we could just have our money back, which she then rooted around in the tip jar for and handed me back the cost of my friends drink, without a single word, no apology or anything. Safe to say we left immediately. I understand completely that working in a cafe can be stressful, as I have done it myself for 12+ years, but there was only one other couple in there at the time, so it wasn’t exactly busy. Also am I wrong in thinking that someone should know how to make the drinks they have on offer? Or if she didn’t know she should have perhaps apologised and said they weren’t available today. It seemed as though it was her first day but she was the only one serving & I’d imagine there would have been another member of staff guiding her if that was the case.I really hope that she gets the training she needs, in making drinks, using the till & customer service, or hopefully we just caught her on a very bad day, it’s a shame as we have always liked Java and it’s always been great upto now. It has definitely put me off returning though.

The café itself is pleasant and the food is good. Situated on the way down to the harbour. Social distancing within café also good. Staff happy enough - just feel the girl on the till was slightly grumpy and the cleaning down of tables, after guests, in the current situation was not up to scratch. I didn't see her wash, or gel, her hands once and she was taking money, serving and clearing up. Wiping just the surface of a table, with a spray and a dirty dish cloth, and then leaving the dish cloth scrunched up on the table by the door is not a good advert. Why aren't the tables, seats, high chair seats being sprayed and wiped with a disposable cloth? There is also a hand rail on the stairs up to the upper café and toilet, which I didn't notice being wiped down, and no paper towels in the toilet. Just little things that make you think if this is now, what is it like normally.

I've visited this café many times when visiting friends and, apart from the last visit, have always been very impressed. This time though was a real disappointment for me. It didn't get off to a good start with the coffee orders being wrong. More importantly, my full English breakfast was very poor. The sausages were cremated and the fried eggs overcooked such that they were rubbery in texture without a semblance of a runny yolk plus the toast was poor quality bread. In fairness, the rest of our party were more than happy with what they received and my friend who also had a full English was more than happy, but he admitted that he likes his sausage cooked like that and he had the scrambled eggs which looked very good.

Tried this small cafe twice in the last couple of months. Both times the food was very good - a different burger each time, with fries (NB the "large fries" is a very large portion!) and good value. On the downside, the service from the staff was variable - on my first visit the waitress was off hand and virtually threw my plate down on the table in front of me with barely a word; on my second visit the waiter was friendly and efficient. This could be a great cafe once this lack of consistent good service is sorted. One final gripe: the door self-closing mechanism doesn't work - much needed in winter!

The best of the many cafés we visited during our short break in Whitby. Sadly we didn't get to taste the food as had eaten shortly before our visit, we will definitely return as the menu sounded excellent and brilliant value for money!

...and not a greasy spoon. Have been a few times over the years, never disappointed. Though it looks small from the outside, there's upstairs seating as well.

Coffee shop that definitely has 'regulars'. Had a very nice cream cheese and smoked salmon bagel. Perching on stools at the counter in the window gives a good view of people huffing and puffing from the hill!

I would not normally bother with a TA review for this type of visit but looking at the 1 and 2 star reviews I can only echo the service experience.Walked in and it was fairly busy but we spotted an empty table. Spoke to the girl behind the counter who looked like she had not long left a nightclub and she said just order here and put a menu down in front of me then wandered off. A queue was starting to form behind us while we frantically searched the menu for something we might like. You don't go out for breakfast to be put under pressure to choose something quickly with a line of people behind you and a server that couldn't give a toss. We walked.

I am not a big fan of the chain coffee shops so I find Java a breathe of fresh air. The coffee is always hot and made to my specific requirements. We usually have breakfast when we visit and I have to say I cannot fault the food. The breakfast muffins are freshly cooked and made with very good quality ingredients. We plan to visit again next time we are in whitby

We were staying in a nearby apartment and nipped in here for our morning coffee fix. I can highly recommend the coffee. We didn't eat here - but it looked good.

Nice coffee and nice cups. Music not to my taste but it was ok. Liked sitting at the bench looking out through the window at the passers-by.

We stopped by for a light lunch and shared a garlic mushroom and brie panini and a bucket of sweet potato fries. The panini came with a little dressed salad and some lovely coleslaw and the fries with sour cream. It was really nice and I would absolutely recommend this for Paninis. They are dog friendly which is nice as we often have our dog with us in Whitby. Service was quick and courteous.

A superb value english breakfast with good sausages and a nice mug of coffee. One of the best brekkys I've eaten. Atmosphere was pleasant and if I lived in Whitby I'd be back weekly!

We were visiting my girlfriend's hometown on a trip from the USA and she had been recommended by a friend to try Relish. So we popped in for breakfast one morning and it was delicious! I had the break

By far one of the best desert/ice cream places we have visited. Portion sizes are generous and the prices are very reasonable for what you get. Staff are cheerful and friendly and add to the wonderful
