James Street Old English Chippy in Broxtowe

Moved to the area a few months ago, friends had always recommended Olde English Chippy but there were long queues every time we passed - now I know why! Managed to get there at a quieter time yesterday and OMG - friendly staff, ever so accommodating even though they were just about to close, generous portions and then when we got home and demolished the fish and chips WE LOVED IT! Fabulicious, tasty, delicious #lickinglips Oh my days, we could eat this every day!!!! We will be back very soon!

The most delicious Haddock & Chips I have ever had locally. In fact, totally on a par with our favourite fish and chips shop in Scarborough! Friendly obliging staff. Will most certainly be back again!

frankly the best chippy i’ve been to in years. everything is gorgeous and cooked perfectly. tastes amazing and i can’t wait to go back. my only issue is that they cook on arrival which can lead to a longer wait time than average, which is usually ok but sometimes i’ve nipped in before getting a bus and barely made it. little expensive compared to the generic chippies (like george’s) but honestly it’s worth it. love the two ladies who run it as well!

1st time visit to this family run chippy. Found staff to be very friendly. Paid £2.20 for a small cone of chips. They were cooked to order so had to wait a short time, well worth the wait. Very very nice chips. Would definitely return. 🙃

A large fish and chips has always been enough for the two of us over the past 25 years. Beautifully cooked, and we won’t go anywhere else. Even in these times of rising costs it’s always been great value, just what the local chippy should be.

Two haddock + one chips = £14. The two of us couldn't finish the ONE chips, there was so much! Service was NOT quick - because the fresh haddock were produced then battered and after cooked - which was fine by me. No warmed up rubbish here.

Another fish and chip shop and another review from me. As per my other reviews I love a good fish and chip meal. First impressions on entering the shop were really good. Lovely clean counter and cooking area. Couple that with two lovely ladies cooking and serving. Ordered two large cod and chips. I was shown the fish prior to frying and they were huge. I was asked if I wanted chips with both or one portion to share. I did opt for two portions and they were good sized. Fish was absolutely superb. Light crispy batter and great chips. An absolute credit to the Great British Fish and Chips. I have no hesitation in recommending this great establishment. If travelling north or south on the M1 it’s worth making the short detour to sample this great food.

Disappointing. Portion of chips was no more than one scope and the were overcooked. Sausages were completely white looked less like meat and more like a radioactive material. Wouldn't return.

Managed to make it just before their closing time. Ordered the Cod & chips; the fish which is cooked well with very light batter and the chips is tasty as well! The food is prepared fresh and cooked at right temperature that’s why is not too oily. For sure will visit again soon

Daughter told me about the shop she’s gone to for a few years so gave it a try, excellent. Went the other night, fresh cooked fish done to perfection, we usually have fish n mixed and fish n peas, and share with wife, so they split it for us on the trays. Just right!! Will be going again very soon. Great friendly staff. A little gem

The staff is very friendly and the owner seems to take pride in what she does there was about 5 of us waiting for fish I could hear people saying put me a large fish in. Fish chips mushy peas and curry sauce.. The batter fantastic not greasy . The fish very tasty and the chips perfect and then the peas and curry sauce mix wow . What a fantastic combination. Plus a little salt and vinegar.

OMG AMAZING FOOD! absolutely delicious best chippy ever. The fish is the best I recommend the large cod, its chunky white flesh so flaky no words to describe the yummyness 😋🤤 and the chips was just the best lathered in salt and vinegar.everything was so fresh. You won't find a better fish and chip shop. It's top quality, however it is a little expensive, but well worth the extra.

Freshly cooked, clean oil. The food tastes like it should. The large Cod and Haddock are massive, in a light batter and taste fantastic. We pass several other chippy's on the way here, tried all of them, won't be going back to any of them.

Great local chip shop. The chips are some of the best going. Nice pies available from Barlow's too. Service is friendly and with a smile.

What a wonderful chippy. staff are so lovely and cheerful. beautiful fish and chips me and hubby thought we've heard lots of good things about it so we thought we'd give it ago and definitely the best chippy the fish was deliciously cooked to perfection nice crispy batter and thin just how we like it. Mini fish,chip and peas was a winner we ate every bit and was stuffed. Good portion sizes and what a bargain for quality was 5* all the way .thankyou very much we will be returning

Tried this chip shop today with my daughter and oh my god it was the best!! We had mini fish chips and peas and you can tell it’s quality fish it was delicious and they told us they soak their own peas over night they was the best mushy peas ever . The chips had just come out so we had everything fresh I will tell my friends to definitely try this chippy. We will be back . The service was excellent very chatty, happy smiley staff

Just what I needed on a cold Thursday, a quick, well cooked tasty tray of fish, chips and peas. Kids had fish cake and there wasn't a chip left between us! (And not because of the portion size!)

One of the best chip shops in the area ( i would highly recommend there gravy ) I've being going here for a long time never had a bad time for me the best chip shop around I wouldn't go anywhere else . All food cooked fresh while u wait .

This is just the best fish and chip shop in the country. Delicious freshly cooked food and a top customer service. Nothing too much trouble. Well worth a trip out.

What has happened? You could never fault this chippy, the best for miles. Had the worst fish and chips yesterday..... what is going on? Chips and fish wrapped together, so totally wet by the time we got them home (2mins), batter soggy, chips tiny, like the bits out the bottom of the frier. Come on peps, don’t let the standards drop.

Tightest chippy you'll ever go to. £2:90 For large chips that would be a normal size anywhere else. Normal size wouldn't feed a child and they're £1:80. Rip off.

Found this chippy using Google, fantastic fish and chips, light crispy batter on the fish. The staff are very friendly and the shop as been run by the same family for 32 years! I also witnessed the biggest fish and chips order I've ever seen, £54

Dont cook stuff untill you tell them what you want and its really small so they shouldnt do that and they just wrap the food dont ask you if u want salt and vinegar and if you arnt careful they will put it on your peas or beans not chips and it should b salt 1st then vinegar

What a treat, some good old fashioned fresh fish and chips. Gorgeous white flakes of fresh fish in a crispy and not too thick batter served with excellent firm fluffy and crisp chips. I plumped for a large fish which was a good size and good value for money. All served with a smile and obviously a business that cares about what they serve and how they do it. Thanks for a delicious fish supper. Loved it 😀
