Jackos Fish & Chips in Rochford

Very average fish and chips,, 2 cod and chips Almost £20 . Chips was a stingy portion and all shoved in a small bag with the chips so the Fish went all sweaty and floppy . Fish was NOT individually wrapped in paper as you would expect from any fish and chips shop proud of the food they sell .. presented with a pile of rubbish never again will I use this place . You have been warned ⚠️

I have been eating from Jacko's since Paul (the Manager) took over the place & what he & his dedicated team have achieved is phenomenal. I'm talking about 10+ years of exemplary service, dedication & a "5 star* hygiene rating" here. My God I am lucky to have them practically on my doorstep! lol The food is unrivaled for one very important reason: Freshness. That's right FRESHNESS. Jacko's epitomizes this! So! If you're looking for Fries - that are "crispy on the outside" & all that twaddle... go to Burger King or some other American Franchise because real [20kg sacks of the finest] potatoes skinned & chipped on the premises; on the day - should melt in your mouth! Jacko's Chips are the tastiest, most fresh chips I have ever experienced. This aint McDonald's ok? If you want the Frozen pre-cut double-fried greasy stuff in a plastic box.. go down the road. This is the real Traditional British way of keeping the heat, flavour & freshness locked up inside a bag rapped in good old fashioned paper! No one wants dry chips. These guys have also mastered the cut-size too. If they are too thick, you'll get those horrid under-cooked acrid chips from time to time in every bag. If you cut them too thin.. many shall darken & they'll cool in no time & become stiff. People need to just trust that these are the best that a fryer can achieve in terms of consistency. I haven't had a bad chip as far as I remember! The fish is worth while in all sizes & is ordered in regularly. It's in high demand on a busy night which can be unpredictable though! It flies off the shelf on Friday's & Saturdays! So order via telephone to confirm! The more notice you give them, the better chances you have of catching a fish!! They are limited to fridge space naturally, & in order to maintain superior freshness, they do not over-order & freeze excess. They order to demand and cook from the cooler - not from the freezer. Seriously just try & you can tell that the freshness is unsurpassed. My favourite though has to be their Southern Fried Chicken! It's so succulent! It's coated in their own savoury recipe, & if you give them an hour notice, it comes out finger-burning hot & cooked perfect every time. They have nailed this! 4 pieces and a Scoop of Chips is legendary around these parts! Ha ha! If you've busted a gut at work, or just want to treat yourself & your mates.. nothing gets my mouth watering like their chicken! If you order 4 pieces, you'll typically get a variety of each; 1 Wing, 1 Thigh, 1 Breast, & 1 Drumstick!! It's not for everyone, I can understand this in the changing times where some are uncomfortable eating off the bone. But again.. this is a traditional Fish & Chips service, & for years the tastiest chicken is that closest to the bone. The flavour that's housed in the bone is distributed to the rest of the meat; leaving you with a deeper sweetness & keeping the skin on locks the moisture in to each piece - giving you the best that money can buy! And at less than a tenner (2023), this is a Bargain! I'd say that me & the lads are addicted at this point!! They do a no-frills Chicken Fillet Burger which comes with Mayo/Lettuce - another banger! We order Onion Rings to put in it too! They also sell BBQ Spare Ribs in a vat pack which falls off the bone piping hot! Their 3 types of Sausages are a winner. And they also sell pies, fish/chicken goujons, kids meals, fried battered Mushrooms with a dip.. check out their menu. They may not do every item like pulled pork, pizzas, kebab, etc. But that is because they can maintain the highest quality for a manageable menu. I've had over half a thousand orders from this joint in my lifetime so far. And I can vouch not only for the food & reliability, but also for the kindness, charm, & patience they have shown me, my friends & my family over the years - to the point where I consider them my friends also. There is that trust. They are not trying to con me, to fleece their customers of cash whilst presenting them with cheapest produce. They take their work very seriously & take pride in keeping locals coming back for more of their iconic taste. The Jacko's taste! Please give them a sincere chance, & if you like what they produce, please give them the support they deserve because you would be surprised at just how few Chippies put in the passion required to sustain that 100% classic pure fresh taste that was once abound across the land. Many get greedy & sacrifice standards. Paul & Sparks (nickname!) are masters of their trade & haven't let their standards drop - not even once. Sounds too good to be true I know! If I hadn't experienced it first hand myself I would say so too! Thank you so much for your hard work guys. I recall a day in the 40 degree heat last summer when you all looked so burnt out.. and still you put blood, sweat & tears into ever item we asked for. Recently had a piece of cod cooked fresh with no skin , it was a lovely thick piece. My partner thoroughly enjoyed it as did I. The chips are always lovely. Piping hot and the staff are so friendly Delicious. You can call in advance so your order is prepared before you get there, so no queuing. Would definitely recommend this chipshop

A visit from the north. Just arrived from a long journey from the north east and meeting up with family we called in to jackos. We received a very warm welcome and it was good to see a selection of different fish on the menu. We all had different fish plaice haddock and traditional cod all cooked fresh to order. They were hugh and good size portion of chips fish was lovely and fresh chips nicely cooked and not greasy at all. Very nice price was average for fish and chips I wouldn't hesitate to call in next time I'm down this way.

Been going here on and off for the past 20 years, always pleasant service and great food - parking can be a problem at times

This fish and chip shop is not as good as it was before chicken was recooked I think? Had no flavour fish was not white. Will not be going back

Having recently moved to the area, I was recommended this place. Good quality food, service with a smile, appears to be run by a happy close knit family. Prices were average but good quality was good!

Great Take Away Fish and Chips, Really Friendly Service Every Friday is fish and chips for us, and every Friday we go to Jacko's. Quick service unless you want something special - eg vegetarian, nuggets etc as they are cooked to order- but you can ring ahead! There are other Chippies locally but we keep going back to Jacko's. It is scrupulously clean, the staff are friendly and helpful, the chip portions are huge. And the added bonus is the twins: Viv and Bev. Which one will you be served by? I still can't tell the difference!

Popped in here last week to buy some chips. I'd have expected an establishment with the word 'chips' in its title to be able to cook the things, but this was beyond them. They were pale beige in colour, slimy and limp. Possibly they need to cook them in hotter oil? There are other chippies in the area so I will avoid this one in future.

This place looks clean and is of course local,we were camping just up the road so fish and chips Was the order of the day.. Large cod and chips with a few extras ,peas curry sauce about £12..pretty good. Couldn't fault the fish..the chips could be cooked better by a 10 year old..tiny greasy things..probably pre frozen dumped into the fryer..which is a real shame ..cook the chips properly !..oh and pet hate no nail varnish..(and I don't mean on the food)..

Pedimos unas patatas fritas y una hamburguesa, alas.Las patatas fritas eran frías. Hamburguesa era horrible. Las alas eran los fríos en el medio y no hecha.Al descubrir el estado de las alas deposité mi comida. Nunca volver.

One part of me wanted to live near a good fish and chip shop and another part of me didn't ! The reason being that it would be very easy to eat this type of food on a regular basis and not eat as healthily as I should. People will say to take the batter off the fish but what's the point ? Anyway, when I feel like chips this is where I'll go. They are lovely.

Always nice freshly cooked food here. Worth a bit of a drive to get our food here. This place comes Highly recommended.

As suggested the food is consistently good, helpful staff, quick service with good range of fish along with other normal fish shop fare.

Having lived in area for many years and tried others this takeaway scores highly the fish (skate middle) always good, service excellent .

Just as a chippy SHOULD be!! The fact that you queue is a true indication that it is better than others nearby. Good selection and value for money. Can park outside.

I love visiting my son in Rochford. While we are there we always go to Jacko's because they sell skate which I cant get where I live. The batter is lovely and so are the chips.

There are fishing boats in Leigh, Southend, rivers roach and crouch. So why not in jacko's. Batter and chips were soggy when we opened the packet, not the first bad visit for us, but the last.

we live in walking distance, so it is our local chippy. When to food is good it is really good - hot, nice dry chips, great wedges, good flavour pies and sausages and hubby says fish is good. When it's bad - lukewarm, little flavour, greasy.

I live a minute walk from Jacko's but I would still visit if I had to drive. It's often busy when I pass which I feel reflects how good the food is. I have visited within the last week and the fish and chips were excellent, and I feel the lunch time special is excellent value for money.

Since Jacko's changed hands it has gone from bad to worse. There used to be queues out the door but not anymore. The chips are undercooked and greasy and since when did they start throwing curry rolls in the microwave?! I saw the old owner out the other night and practically begged him to go back or at least tell the new owner how to get their customers back.

We pop in, anytime we are in rochford, and everything is always hot, the food is lovely and can never complain, the greatest thing is you can always get half a bag of chips, because they put so much in, and you never eat a full bag anyway, well I dont, staff are polite, would recommend to people

Wow what has happened to Jacko's, for many years it as been the place to go for fish and chips however last nights visit left me very dissapointed, Chips were clearly undercooked, all pale and soft. Definately not the usual proper crispy chips and too thin ... sorry but wont be back..

Ate here by a chance Google search when visiting Southend. The food was freshly cooked and incredibly good! Huge servings and two of us could share one portion! Not greasy and very clean. Quick service and friendly staff.

Not sure when it changed hands .but the quality has gone from a great Chippy Horrible under cooked greasy chips that are obviously from the freezer ,not nice chunky chips that this place was famous for ..Sorry but won't be coming back

Jackos fish and chips can be beautiful one day and average the next. Not sure if they have different staff frying. Overall, I would say they are just above average. But the fish and chip shop looks dated and some of the counter surface feel greasy to the touch and the shop could do with modernising.

Jackos has always been a popular fish and chip shop within our local community. I have used the shop for over 20 years however have to comment on my most recent visit. It is clear that the shop has been taken over by new managers- little would you know as the changes are clearly minimal. The fish was perfect and chips out of this world! It was a very busy Saturday evening and was quite a queue however the staff where all working at the best of their ability... As always in a welcoming and polite way! Jackos is clearly doing very well and I wish the new owners all the very best of luck with the shop, not that they need it.

Very fast service, even when there was a large queue on a Friday evening.There were a lot of items ready , pre cooked and in the hot cabinets.The prices are very reasonable and food good.

The fish and chips from Jackos has always been great. The batter is light and not greasy as with some fish and chip shops. Always a lovely treat

Jackos never lets you down for that last minute "I fancy fish and chips" moment. A range of the normal chip shop produce the takeaway is conveniently situated near the roundabout but with some parking outside.

What can I say.. Had a lunchtime visit recently and the fish was out of this world. If you are local give this place a try ...

Jackos has been a family chippie for donkies years but recently taken over by, i think a Cypriot chap (apologies if i've got that wrong).went there on a Tuesday night after along drive home following a holiday so little in the fridge. was about 7:00pm and probably past the main business period but i asked for a middle skate that had to be freshly fried, so at the same time fryer man also put in a medium haddock. i had to wait probably 10 minutes but so worth it. my skate was massive, i really struggled to finish as was my wife's haddock fillet and chips were as chips should be.chatting with the fryer man he said he was not intending to change anything, other than now open mondays, as this chippie has been here forever and has a large local following.fish and chips is no longer a cheap meal, middle skate certainly isn't, but this was very good and worth every penny.i hope the new owner continues to not change anything and continue as it always has been.
