Itihaas in Midlothian

Arrived 4.45, waited 15 mins before anyone came near us, ordered starter, waited another hour before our main meal came. Numerous excuses, such as we cook your food fresh, then the order didn't go through, people who came in after us were served, paid and away before we were served our meal which was lukewarm . All in all a pretty miserable night for my wife's birthday ! Won't be back.

The staff are most attentive and we were made very welcome. It's very clean and the food is amazing.

We are visiting the area for the first time and Itihaas was suggested to us by another guest at our hotel. The food was exceptional as was the service. Staff was very attentive, helpful and very friendly. Highly recommend!

I was absolutely shocked at £21.50 to buy a lamb bunny and a peshwari nan bread I've seen japati's bigger but it the price include delivery charge £1.50 can't believe how expensive a kuri has become

The Rogan Josh had absolutely zero flavour at all or spice. It was the most bland sauce I've ever tasted. It tasted like chicken in water.. You delivered a Peshawari naan instead of the Garlic naan that I ordered. The korma was fine, the poppadoms were good but the rest was really disappointing and cost over £50... Biji's in Wallyford is far superior in every way. Unfortunately I won't be ordering from here again

Absolutely fantastic food as always.

Binned the whole meal. Tasted like it had a bag of sugar in it, super sickly sweet. Forgot the chips. Boiled rice was hard. Garlic Nann was ok, very chewy and thin. So disappointing cost almost £50, got refund for missing chips. Waited an hour for it. Previous meal was ok. Literally had no dinner and this was meant to be a treat. Never again will we order here I’m sad to say.

The food was fabulous and there peshwari nan was one of the best I have tasted in a long time, the spices in there main meals were well balanced and delicious. This is the first time we have tried itihass and would certainly recommend it and we will be ordering again from them.

Always good for food. We like to come with the family and all enjoy.

Meal wasn't really that great had better. After a bill of 163.00 on food and drink they had the cheek to charge 1.00 for a tub to take away what my daughter did not eat. Soft drinks a rip off 3.75 per glass and was from a bottle of juice that was opened for a while and was flat. We asked for water there was 4 of us and all we got was 2 glasses of water. The waiter (not sure of his name) was quite rude snatching the menus out of your hand after ordering. Won't be rushing back all dishes where different that was ordered but evey dish tasted the same.🤢 for being an award winning restaurant I don't think it was anything special.

We enjoyed them as a starter but they’d also be wonderful alongside your favourite curry! Lamb Pasanda (£15.95) - This North Indian dish offers a luxurious blend of flavours. Tender lamb pieces that have been marinated in a mix of yogurt, ground almonds, onion, ginger, and garlic. The creamy sauce is mildly spiced with cardamom, cinnamon, and other aromatic spices. It’s not very hot, making it family-friendly. It’s rich, nutty gravy enveloping succulent lamb pieces—pure comfort on a plate! As the meal progressed, the sauce thickened due to the hot plate. Personally, I would have preferred a thinner sauce. Sag Gosht (£14.95) - Sometimes this dish is known as Lamb Palak; a delightful curry that combines tender pieces of lamb with creamy spinach. The lamb imparts a meaty richness, while the spinach adds a vibrant green freshness. The curry is seasoned with aromatic spices like cumin, coriander, fenugreek, and garam masala. These spices create layers of flavour without overpowering the dish. Fragrant and flavourfull! Alo Gobi Massala (£9.55) - Essentially a spicy Cauliflower Potato Curry. It’s packed full of spices such as turmeric, cumin, coriander, and garam masala, adding warmth and depth. While the spices in this dish were quite pronounced, unfortunately, it didn’t suit my taste. Our meal was a carb-filled adventure with these three breads. The Peshwari nan, generously adorned with almond paste, won my heart. However, the paratha felt a bit weighty. I’d pick either nan or paratha to pair with my curries. While the paratha bursts with flavour, it does hold onto some oil—unlike the drier texture of nan. Whether you’re craving sweetness, simplicity, or layers of flavour, these Indian breads have something for everyone! We had an absolutely delightful experience dining at Itihaas Indian restaurant. The food was scrumptious and left us feeling wonderfully satisfied. The drive to Dalkeith is definitely worth it for this authentic Indian feast!

Whilst Itihaas relies principally on a local loyal customer base it is quite mystifying why it picks up awards as the cuisine is average and certainly not up to the standards of countless Indian/Bangladeshi restaurants in Edinburgh. In addition the service is extremely poor with surly staff, and we will revert to dining at several excellent restaurants in Edinburgh as even with the hassle of going into town from Dalkeith, the experience is much more enjoyable. In it's earlier days Itihaas was very good but those days seem to have disappeared

Chicken biryani was sent instead of vegetarian. I phoned up to get this corrected and after waiting 45 minutes it still hasn't been delivered. I told them to cancel it as it's now almost 9:30 and I'm going to bed soon.

This is a great restaurant for lunch, dinner and takeaway. On arrival we were greeted by friendly staff who took us straight to our table and took our drinks order. We ordered starters & mains which we took recommendation on trying something new we really liked. The chicken tikka masala as always was amazing fresh and hot. The rice and naan to go with it was also perfect. We washed our food down with a lovely pink gin and tonic and to finish off a lovely meal we had the baileys coffee. The staff are fantastic and we will definitely be back.

Booked over the phone for 6 people before 9pm is a must as they close at 10pm. Whole experience was a bit rushed but food was excellent and wasnt offered any starters as we were late of course.

Just can't get better Indian food in Edinburgh and around

We ordered a home delivery & I have never had an Indian meal more disgusting than this, It was supposed to be a Methi Gosht but it tasted nothing like it & to add insult to injury it had about 5mm of oil floating on top, Don't get me wrong I use a lot of oil in my base sauces when I cook a curry from scratch but never this much in my main curry, My wife ordered a mild sabzi Rogan Josh with more sauce than veg which they seem to have mixed up & they even managed to forgot 1 off the chapati's we ordered. This has to be the last time we order from this place & whoever the chef is he needs to hang his head in shame to charge us over £40 for this insult to indian food 🤮😡

Had a meal there tonight with friends. Food was extremely delicious and perfect portions. I had the Chicken Pasanda which was perfect and very tasty. The service from our waiter was brilliant. Mid week so quiet but not too quiet.

I am satisfied with my order the sabzi Pakoras where class along with the rest however came slightly cold.

I tried a dish I had never had before but it sounded nice on the menu a medium hotness, chicken tikka with onions peppers and mushrooms in a sauce, I also got fried rice with peas and a peshwari Nan. It was delish, very yummy indeed

Food was an hour late from the time advised when ordering and the order being accepted. When ringing the restaurant to ask where it was, got the rudest member of staff who advised me that ‘just eat don’t cook the food we do and the delivery is an hour and a half’. Have ordered from Itihhas for years but will reconsider ordering from here again after tonight.

The entire experience of ordering food from this restaurant was a disaster. The food was already late 40 minutes past the estimated delivery time when I called the restaurant to ask for an update, they mentioned that they were busy and the food would be with me in 40 minutes. However, even an hour after the additional 40 minutes they mentioned, the food had not arrived. In total, it was over 2 hours late. When I called again, nobody answered. Eventually, the food arrived, but it was very disappointing to find that it was cold and basically tasteless. The meat was tough, and the sauces were greasy and separated, making the poor quality of the food virtually inedible. The substandard food and the delivery delay were definitely not worth the money I paid, and I would like a refund.

Woeful experience, will never order again and will tell all who ask not too either. Food is average for the price. Delivery fee extortionate and then delivery estimate was 60-85 mins and it was 150 mins before our food arrived! A joke establishment and father's day ruined.

Well I ordered a chicken vindaloo which transpired to be largely potato vindaloo. A wee bit light on the chicken. Nan breads are smaller than other restaurants. Not worth £25

With high expectations, this was one of the very best east Indian meals we have had over 55 years. Every aspect of our meal as a group of four was excellent, food, service decor. Portions were generous. Saeed, our waiter, was top rate (well done, Sid). All food was served on nicely warmed plates. Don't miss this gem.

We visited on the 2nd June for the Banquet to celebrate a special Birthday , overall the food was quite tasty and service was good but the small portions were ridiculous also we ordered a couple of cans of Ginger beer and were charged best part of £9.00 for the privilege, no need for this and felt ripped off , be aware and look at the prices before ordering .
