As my name suggests, I'm something of a curry connoisseur! And I must say, I can't speak to the other dishes but this is THE MOST DELICIOUS LAMB BIRIYANI I HAVE EVER HAD! Well done Itihaas. Lovely staff too.

Fabulous food and service as always! We’ve been coming for years and wouldn't go anywhere else for an Indian!

Meal wasn't really that great had better. After a bill of 163.00 on food and drink they had the cheek to charge 1.00 for a tub to take away what my daughter did not eat. Soft drinks a rip off 3.75 per glass and was from a bottle of juice that was opened for a while and was flat. We asked for water there was 4 of us and all we got was 2 glasses of water. The waiter (not sure of his name) was quite rude snatching the menus out of your hand after ordering. Won't be rushing back all dishes where different that was ordered but evey dish tasted the same.🤢 for being an award winning restaurant I don't think it was anything special.

Had lunch with my daughter and granddaughter today and it was outstanding 👏 👌

Itihaas, is an award-winning Indian and Bangladeshi restaurant nestled in the heart of Dalkeith, near Edinburgh. Their name, means ‘history’ in Hindi, reflecting their commitment to traditional flavours while embracing modern culinary techniques. Their menu is a carefully curated symphony of flavours, showcasing the best of Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine. From aromatic biryanis to succulent kebabs, each dish is a testament to the rich culinary heritage of these regions. They pride themselves on using the freshest ingredients, ensuring every meal is not only flavourful but also nourishing. The staff are friendly, welcoming, attentive, and eager to serve. Our meal begins with crispy poppadoms (£1.10) accompanied by mint and yogurt sauce (£1.10), mango chutney (£1.10), sweet chili sauce (£1.10), and a refreshing onion salad (£1.10). These flavours are so irresistible that our hands remain glued to the plates. The menu at Itihaas boasts an array of delectable dishes, ranging from succulent beef and chicken to tender lamb and flavourful fish. Vegetarians also have plenty of options to choose from. Highlights include the Itihaas Kebabs—charcoal-grilled and served with mint sauce—Tandoori dishes marinated in mildly spiced yogurt, aromatic Biryani cooked in ghee, and an abundance of delightful sides, rice, and bread options. Samosa (£5.95) - These golden, crisp pastry parcels are filled with spiced lamb, fresh coriander, and a hint of chili. The lamb mince adds rich flavour and juiciness to the filling, creating a satisfying bite in every samosa. A delightful blend of savoury, aromatic spices wrapped in a crispy pastry shell—utterly irresistible! Onion Bhaji (£5.95) - These fritters are made from thinly sliced onions coated in a spiced flour batter and deep-fried until golden and crispy. We enjoyed them as a starter but they’d also be wonderful alongside your favourite curry! Lamb Pasanda (£15.95) - This North Indian dish offers a luxurious blend of flavours. Tender lamb pieces that have been marinated in a mix of yogurt, ground almonds, onion, ginger, and garlic. The creamy sauce is mildly spiced with cardamom, cinnamon, and other aromatic spices. It’s not very hot, making it family-friendly. It’s rich, nutty gravy enveloping succulent lamb pieces—pure comfort on a plate! As the meal progressed, the sauce thickened due to the hot plate. Personally, I would have preferred a thinner sauce. Sag Gosht (£14.95) - Sometimes this dish is known as Lamb Palak; a delightful curry that combines tender pieces of lamb with creamy spinach. The lamb imparts a meaty richness, while the spinach adds a vibrant green freshness. The curry is seasoned with aromatic spices like cumin, coriander, fenugreek, and garam masala. These spices create layers of flavour without overpowering the dish. Fragrant and flavourfull! Alo Gobi Massala (£9.55) - Essentially a spicy Cauliflower Potato Curry. It’s packed full of spices such as turmeric, cumin, coriander, and garam masala, adding warmth and depth. While the spices in this dish were quite pronounced, unfortunately, it didn’t suit my taste. Our meal was a carb-filled adventure with these three breads. The Peshwari nan, generously adorned with almond paste, won my heart. However, the paratha felt a bit weighty. I’d pick either nan or paratha to pair with my curries. While the paratha bursts with flavour, it does hold onto some oil—unlike the drier texture of nan. Whether you’re craving sweetness, simplicity, or layers of flavour, these Indian breads have something for everyone! We had an absolutely delightful experience dining at Itihaas Indian restaurant. The food was scrumptious and left us feeling wonderfully satisfied. The drive to Dalkeith is definitely worth it for this authentic Indian feast!

We were twice at the restaurant during our visit and both times the food as well as the service were outstanding!

Whilst Itihaas relies principally on a local loyal customer base it is quite mystifying why it picks up awards as the cuisine is average and certainly not up to the standards of countless Indian/Bangladeshi restaurants in Edinburgh. In addition the service is extremely poor with surly staff, and we will revert to dining at several excellent restaurants in Edinburgh as even with the hassle of going into town from Dalkeith, the experience is much more enjoyable. In it's earlier days Itihaas was very good but those days seem to have disappeared

Booked over the phone for 6 people before 9pm is a must as they close at 10pm. Whole experience was a bit rushed but food was excellent and wasnt offered any starters as we were late of course.

This is a great restaurant for lunch, dinner and takeaway. On arrival we were greeted by friendly staff who took us straight to our table and took our drinks order. We ordered starters & mains which we took recommendation on trying something new we really liked. The chicken tikka masala as always was amazing fresh and hot. The rice and naan to go with it was also perfect. We washed our food down with a lovely pink gin and tonic and to finish off a lovely meal we had the baileys coffee. The staff are fantastic and we will definitely be back.

We ordered a home delivery & I have never had an Indian meal more disgusting than this, It was supposed to be a Methi Gosht but it tasted nothing like it & to add insult to injury it had about 5mm of oil floating on top, Don't get me wrong I use a lot of oil in my base sauces when I cook a curry from scratch but never this much in my main curry, My wife ordered a mild sabzi Rogan Josh with more sauce than veg which they seem to have mixed up & they even managed to forgot 1 off the chapati's we ordered. This has to be the last time we order from this place & whoever the chef is he needs to hang his head in shame to charge us over £40 for this insult to indian food 🤮😡

Had a meal there tonight with friends. Food was extremely delicious and perfect portions. I had the Chicken Pasanda which was perfect and very tasty. The service from our waiter was brilliant. Mid week so quiet but not too quiet.

Very nice evening meal for our party of six. The food was freshly prepared and very tasty and I liked that the menu had some more unusual dishes on it. The staff were friendly and attentive and made it a relaxed occasion. Highly recommended!

Usually get takeaway but you forget just how good fresh in restaurant food can be. This was that good. The restaurant was busy enough but not packed. The staff were attentive without being intrusive. Thoroughly enjoyed my evening.

With high expectations, this was one of the very best east Indian meals we have had over 55 years. Every aspect of our meal as a group of four was excellent, food, service decor. Portions were generous. Saeed, our waiter, was top rate (well done, Sid). All food was served on nicely warmed plates. Don't miss this gem.

We visited on the 2nd June for the Banquet to celebrate a special Birthday , overall the food was quite tasty and service was good but the small portions were ridiculous also we ordered a couple of cans of Ginger beer and were charged best part of £9.00 for the privilege, no need for this and felt ripped off , be aware and look at the prices before ordering .

Itihaas is consistent in offering good service and excellent food. A pity it isn't better known in nearby Edinburgh, or more people might be tempted to make the trip out to Midlothian to one of the best Bangladeshi restaurants in the region. My wife and I went there for her 80th birthday meal, and we were delighted to find the high standards were being maintained. Even the white wine was served at just the right temperature.
