The experience was very poor, especially since the waitress, who barely spoke English, didn’t explain anything and added nonsense to the bill, pretending everything was normal. She confidently presented us with a £160 bill for what was just a simple meal for me and my wife. We actually ordered a set from menu meant for 2-4 people, clearly said we’d share it, and our son ordered a separate Gong Bao dish. But the final bill had us charged for four sets x4, which theoretically would feed 16 people, plus the extra one. It was such a scam that no one even bothered to double-check or ask if this was a normal. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone because of the service, customer care, and the attitude towards guests.

I write this google review with mixed thoughts. My Husband and I had experienced the most fabulous day joining in with the VE celebrations. On making our way back to Kings Cross we decided to soak the atmosphere in China Town with a light lunch and visited Imperial China. Whilst we cannot speak highly enough of the food - the service we received was unbelievably shocking. Never in my 58 years have I ever received such appalling service in a Restaurant being greeted with so much arrogance and attitude. 1) The Waitress came to take our order in such a rush and said what do you want? We Placed our order and she said is that all? Clearly annoyed we were only ordering x3 dishes between the two of us. 2)what drink she asked? I asked for half a lager please. We don’t do that - bottles only quickly named two, and I was so taken aback that I didn’t absorb what she said. (My Husband saw I was strugggling) He said a bottle of Tiger would be nice please. (I am a survivor of a Cardiac Arrest and do not do/need stress) 3)The waitress then proceeded to walk by us and SLAM our chopsticks on the table (so much so this caught the attention of the couple at the side of us)!!! 4)Arriving with our drinks on a tray a fellow colleague was blocking her path so she started shouting at her in a very loud voice. I asked her at this point are you ok? - why are you being so abrupt with us? I said this is horrible. Her response was I am busy and my colleague is not doing as I asked. (I am not angry at you)!!!? At this point I asked her colleague if she would serve us for the remaining time of our meal as I did not wish for our waitress to return to our table. 5)My Husband asked may we have the bill please? 6)She brought the bill to our table with a discretionary service charge. I immediately asked for this to be removed. Yet again she was disgruntled.(unbelievable) How one person thoroughly spoilt my day is beggars belief. I reiterate at this point this Restaurant serves amazing food. As we were leaving a Gentleman asked if all ok? I did explain what a disappointing experience it had been, and he said he would have a word. I was physically shaking when I walked out of the Restaurant. I NEVER EVER COMPLAIN but could not help myself on this occasion. Alison Thurston

I’ve been to Imperial China many times over the years. It used to be my go-to for a slightly more refined experience in Chinatown — not fancy, but reliable, consistent, and just that bit better. Sadly, something has shifted. The 口水鸡 (mouth watering chicken) was the clearest sign. Traditionally a cold dish bursting with flavour and spice, it arrived warm, confused, and completely lacking in taste. The chicken felt poached from the land of bland. I genuinely had to do a double take. We ordered a wide spread: – Ginger and spring onion lobster (as expected, but £68 is a stretch) – Aubergine hotpot (tasteless) – Prawn stuffed peppers, egg tofu hotpot, morning glory, garlic black fungus, soft shell crab — all of which were nice – Kung po prawn balls — just okay The service was smooth and polite, no complaints there. But there was something almost casual about the whole experience. Instead of a proper menu, we were handed a dim sum-style sheet where you just write the number of each dish you want. It didn’t feel like the elevated dining experience the decor and setting suggest — more like a canteen dressed up in Sunday best.

Food was okay at best, much better places in chinatown but the worst thing is the mistake they made with our order. My wife is a vegetarian and we ordered the vegetarian dim sum platter, they brought it to the table and told us it was the vegetarian dim sum platter, my wife takes a bite and says this does taste right, I take a bite and low and behold they had given us the shell fish seafood dim sum platter. Now this is terrible is so many different ways, A - my wife hasn't had meat in many years and their mistake broke that. B - what if she was allergic to shell fish? This mistake could have gone terribly wrong. They tried to make it up by offering a complementary drink? Are you joking? Then when the bill came they had the nerve to try and still charge us for the whole meal. In the end they comped two of our dishes but honestly if I owned the establishment and I made this huge mistake I would say sorry the whole bill is on us, order whatever you want. As we were having such a good day I thankfully was in a very good mood and didn't flip my lid but if I didn't have such a fantastic day prior to this then it would have been bad. Shocking behaviour from this restaurant and I do not recommend coming here.

I visited Imperial China on a Saturday afternoon with friends for dim sum. We were seated promptly, and menus were provided right away. The restaurant’s atmosphere was beautiful—despite being busy, the water features and artwork created a relaxing experience. We ordered a variety of dim sum staples, including sui kow, har gow, BBQ pork puffs, cheung fun, taro croquettes, and chicken feet in black bean sauce. In addition, we tried the XO udon, Yang Zhou fried rice, and French beans with XO sauce. The food itself was okay, but I’d recommend other dim sum spots in Soho over this one. The chicken feet, in particular, were tough and bulked out with tofu puff. Service was generally fine, but one waiter surprisingly threatened to charge us for sauce when we asked for some—despite no sauce being provided, which is usually a standard courtesy with dim sum. Fortunately, the charge never appeared on the bill. Overall, while the setting was lovely, the food and service didn’t quite live up to expectations.

It feels like this place has been around for a long time and we haven't been here in recent times - so we thought we'd give it a go! We had most of the staple dim sums (sui kow, har kow, BBQ pork puffs, cheung fun, taro croquettes and chicken feet in black bean sauce). In addition we also had the XO udon, yang zhou fried rice and french beans with XO sauce. Verdict - just mediocre and in fact, we'd probably rate other dim sum places over this. Some dishes were below par e.g. chicken feet was tough and padded with tofu puff and  others were a bit bland. Whilst most of the staff were generally fine, one of the waiters threatened to charge us for chilli oil which felt nuts as they didn't even provide us with any sauces. (Fortunately he did not follow through but it was a bit weird nonetheless...)

This restaurant has gone downhill. The Pak choi was merely boiled in water and slapped on a plate sans any flavouring or seasoning. Who pays 9 quid for that? The mapo tofu inexplicably had peas and mushrooms in. No spice either. That ain't mapo... The sweet and sour chicken was dry and the beef (with chillis) was so tough and chewy. Cheung diversión no delgada y delicada. No malgastes tu dinero.

Our meal was average overall and a bit on the pricey side. While the duck and dumplings were lovely, the beef, pork, and prawn dishes were fairly unremarkable. Unfortunately, the experience at the end of the meal further tarnished our evening. As soon as we finished eating, the bill was promptly placed on our table - nobody asked us if we wanted to order anything further. We were a penny short of the £140 total, which included a £16 optional service charge, and the waitress seemed visibly displeased when we pointed this out. After I mentioned the optional nature of the service charge, she took the bill and walked away without a word. I’ve dined here several times with no issue, but this time I was served by a short waiter who was one of the few members of staff that wasn’t chinese. He was rude, unprofessional and at times appeared to mock customers to their faces. He’d clear plates from our table, say thank you in a strange voice then start laughing with another waiter before even turning his back. At one point I politely asked for another drink when some food arrived and he just put both his thumbs in my face, smiled like the joker and walked away. I was shocked, let alone the absurd prices for small portions and average food I couldn’t believe this guys attitude. I feel the direct nature of Chinese service is often misinterpreted by brits, but this is not the case here. Won’t be going back again.

The entrance of the restaurant is beautiful with the statues and the bridge over the river. Restaurant was very clean and tidy. It was also very easy to get hold of a staff member if needed. They also removed used plates very quickly so the table was always clear if any clutter

Expectations should be lowered compared to the price. It tastes as good as you can get at a local Chinese restaurant, but it's not cheap because it's in Chinatown.

We booked this restaurant for a family gathering of 12+ people as we were told that it was spacious - it did not disappoint. However, it was quite empty for a Saturday night, we were one of two tables in this big room all throughout the night and as we were in a room, we were somewhat neglected. We had to keep walking out of the room to get attention. The food was so so and portion sizes were ridiculous for what it's worth. We ordered a whole peking duck to share between us but it most certainly did not look like a whole duck (I'll post pictures once I get them). Sadly, we went back to our Airbnb hungry, so we would not recommend this restaurant.

Visited for an early dinner. Wanted to have Dim Sum but they did not have that many Dim Sum dishes which was a disappointment. For example no favourites like barbecued pork bun. Had pork dumplings, spring roll, ribs, seaweed, plain rice, Chinese tea, ginger ale, Elderflower presse. Including 20% summer discount, total was £47.20. Food was so so. Thought that the ribs were overcooked. Mastercard card payments accepted. Service was very attentive.

Nice and somewhat secluded restaurant in chinatown. The food was delicious and the service was great, almost too good, as the waiters were constantly lingering close to our table. In a good way, though. 😀 The atmosphere also quiet and with a spacious feel to the locale.

This used to be a good restaurant I’m not sure if they have changed the chef. We are Chinese and this was terrible we ate one bowl each and took the rest home cause it was just not good food. We spent £140 and could have gotten a better meal from a local small town takeaway. Duck pancake - the duck portion was tiny and dry Chicken/crab sweetcorn soup - bland and needed salt and seasoning Crispy noodles black bean sauce - not enough sauce and noodles were all clumped together Shrimp Stuffed aubergine, pepper and tofu - there was not enough shrimp in the stuffing mix, it was very mushy like it was mostly corn flour. The stuffing did not have that bouncy shrimp texture Choi sum - over cooked no flavour. Needed oyster sauce & garlic Salt & pepper squid - batter was too thick and had no flavour Fujin rice - bland with a strange herbal taste The only upside to this experience was the service from the non Chinese staff. The south Asian waiters was very friendly and helpful. The Chinese staff were rushed and did not provide a nice experience I am always happy to pay for a good meal and tip generously but this was a bad experience and we will not be coming back

This is probably one of, if not the worst Chinese restaurants I've tried in my life. The duck pancake portion was tiny - it looked like someone had already eaten off of the plate with how little we were given. The duck was unusually dry too. The crab and sweetcorn soup was okay but needed extra seasoning. The mains were truly horrible. If I could rate 0 stars I would. The Fu Jian style rice was so salty with a strange herbal undertone to it. The meat (I believe was pork) had a overpoweringly strong floral taste to it too which made the whole dish inedible - I gave up after two bites. The crispy black bean noodles were extremely greasy and the overall flavour was salt. The fried squid batter tasted like burned flour. I left this restaurant having eaten the equivalent of one bowl of food (the soup) - if this doesn't speak to how bad this food was I don't know what to tell you. The only redeeming factor was the service - we had two waiters who were friendly. For such a terrible meal it cost nearly £150, so they also charge extortionate amounts for bad food. Avoid at all costs - there are so many amazing restaurants in the area and this is NOT one of them.

The most tasteless food I've ever eaten The sweet & sour pork was so chewy. It felt like it was very old meat. Chicken cashew nut had no flavour and the same with the fried rice. I can seriously say it's the worst food I've ever eaten

Visited with my son, arrived at midday and were shown straight to a table, it filled up very quickly afterwards so I'd book unless you're going early. Ordered mainly from the dim sum menu as they said that was all made in house, the rest is not and we wanted authentic homemade food. Was all delicious, first try of bao buns they were like eating clouds! Thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will return again. I don't understand where the negative reviews come from - we had a great experience, we had 6 meat dishes, a soup and a bottle of water, we were both stuffed and was less than £50.

Absolutely fantastic Chinese restaurant in Londons china town. Fast service with a friendly tone. Full duck between 5 was soooo good. Ordered way too much food but was all cooked to perfection. Very glad we chose to eat here. The salt and pepper squid and sweet and sour pork were my favourites

Awful. Dim sum sticky and same taste for all. Chicken and beef were like plastic, everything was sticky, sauce was like … rubbery. Service was ok but really slow. I rarely ate a so bad Chinese food. But the best (last but not least) was two teas for 10£!

A complete let down! Looking at other reviews I can further vouch that the food served are mainly heated up food ..presentation was poor, food was inedible , poor quality. They have either changed management or owners as the standard has declined . The decor hasn't been updated with worn out grubby chairs and unkempt appearance overall. It was a bad choice since our last visit pre pandemic and I feel guilty as it was a treat given and the overall dining experience was a shambles. Not only that and to make it worse they haven't got so many items on menu..they ran out of roasts, spinach etc. It's a mockery to decent diners. Restaurant needs an inspection or shut down

The worst Chinese restaurant. This is a place I never want to go to again. The Peking duck was so dry and twisted that I couldn't tell if it was a duck or a tree trunk. If you happen to go in after reading someone's review, I recommend that you come out right away. It will be a good experience for you if you order it without believing my review. Experience the worst restaurant of your life...

We were seeking a good Chinese restaurant which served authentic Chinese food, of good quality. My wife spent a lot of time in Hong Kong as a youngster - and she was keen to relive the cuisine she remembered… The dim sum were the best feature of the meal, and tasted delicious. The crispy Peking duck was nice, but a little disappointing as it was served cold. Price wise it was very good value for money, the service was a bit haphazard as the dishes arrived randomly. Overall it was a very pleasant experience, and our other family members enjoyed it too - we would certainly return, and probably will the next time we visit Chinatown.

We became aware of Imperial China after seeing it mentioned quite a lot in the comments on a You Tube video where two guys who were trying different places out in China Town. We were down in London on holiday and me and my girlfriend decided to try it out. From the second we went in we really liked the place. We loved the Koi Carp in the pond as we walked in, and it was a nice quiet and relaxing atmosphere. We were approached by a member of staff who took us to our table. We found that the Imperial China did not feel cramped like some places do and there was plenty of room to get in and out from your table. We ordered prawn crackers and sesame prawn toast for appetisers. The prawn crackers were the best we have ever tasted. The sesame prawn toast again was the best I've tasted, it had plenty of prawns on it which were lovely and plump and juicy, and the sesame top was lovely and crispy and perfectly cooked. For our main I got curried chicken with steamed rice and my girlfriend got pork chops with honey and lemon and steamed rice. The curry was absolutely delicious. Abundant amounts of chicken, green and red peppers, the rice was perfectly cooked and was not soggy or sticky, and the curry had plenty of heat with it and was lovely and creamy in taste, and I would go as far as saying the nicest I've had anywhere. My girlfriend informed me that her main was absolutely delicious. The pork was lovely and moist and tender and was perfectly cooked, and the honey and lemon sauce tasted beautiful. The steamed rice was perfectly cooked and was not soggy or sticky. The staff were the friendliest we have experienced from the various places we have been to in China Town. We didn't wait long for our food to arrive and found the service excellent. Also the place was really clean and it was nice to see linen table cloths rather than the paper ones you see quite a lot. I have no complaints at all and needless to say that when we are next down in London, we will be heading straight to Imperial China when we go to China Town.

My hot and sour soup was bland; neither chilli hot nor vinegar sour. I asked for chilli oil, a small saucer of which was brought. My brother asked for soy sauce (nothing is already on the table). When the main courses came I asked for more chilli oil, to be told 'the first one was on the house; from now on you pay £1 a serving'. For that reason we will never return. The rice portions are small. The red chilli Szechuan prawns are bulked out with chunks of peppers and celery in a bland, sweet sauce. We got maybe eight prawns for the £18.80 the dish cost. The Sauteed pork with cashew nuts was small cubes, again bulked out by veg and in a nondescript sauce. Lots of staff hovered about watching, but had to be asked twice for the soy sauce. They did keep refilling the green tea pot we all shared. Quiet because off the beaten track (and because it's expensive), air conditioned which was great. Toilets were clean. They did not ask us how the meal was - they didn't care. Go somewhere else where they can actually cook, because this food is boring and overpriced.

Five friends went together on a Saturday. Roasted duck, belly pork, aubergine, fried rice, crispy noodle , udon noodles . Alll were good but the roasted duck was a bit undercooked. Also belly pork was a bit underwhelming as the vegetables were not that exciting
