First time visiting, recommended to me by a multitude of people. Absolutely incredible atmosphere with lovely staff. Had to go on the waiting list but I spent my time waiting in the shop, pretty expensive but you can’t expect Aldi prices in a place like that! Shop was very lovely, I did not buy anything but it would be a lovely place to buy some Christmas presents. The wait for the cafe was well worth it, I had a Tunisian orange cake, very moist and tasted so good that I had to order a second cake, Coffee, it also did not disappoint. I was taken aback by the extensive choices of flavours for my coffee. Highly recommend and I will definitely be back! Thanks

Ive been coming here for many years, and this year didnt disappoint. lovely welcoming service, fully explaining lunch was 12-2 and as its small place you have to be patient, something many people seem to have issues with. Beautiful gift shop with many wonderful treasures to buy. Restaurant was fantastic, food was as always here so yummy and taste. Service from everyone was 10/10. nothing was a problem for any of the staff. Upsets me hearing people moaning and so rude about this wonderful little Angus treasure of a place. Some people are si self entitled it seems. Yes its a pain to get to due to road damages, unfortunately horrific flooding we had in October, that certainly wasnt the staffs fault!! See you next weekend for my final yummy treat. you have all worked so hard you enjoy the festive rest.

Would not recommend this place at all Yes shop nice but staff poor in customer service and attitude towards people -wanted to have lunch but there is a waiting list as the place was busy . A very rude assistant, who appeared to be in charge of seating in the cafe -informed us there is a waiting list but she could not put us on the list as it was far too busy. She asked us to look round the shop and check in to have name put on the list . I personally found this young, incompetent assistant very rude in manner tone and body language. She had no idea how to treat people , and twice refused to put our name on the list but put others on before us - this business needs look at these young people and their attitude. If they want customers.

Looked forward to lunch and we were already aware that you have to put your name down on a list to queue for a table. However, a group came in and got a table well ahead of others who had waited a long time. Evident from the staff behaviour, the group were known to the staff. Pretty frustrating. They could do to organise a phone booking system. A nice light lunch otherwise

I took a friend after being at a Christmas Fayre near Forfar, and we then progressed on to House of Farnell, a few years back, had a look round shop, although that was the usual and interesting, if not entertaining. We then nipped to the Cafe, as it wasn't busy didn't have to put our name down. We ordered a tea, coffee and soup of the day. Well, drinks came before soup, the soup, being tomato, but was lucky if it was 2 spoon fulls. A pretty poor experience. Last Year, 1998 we had missed House of Dun Christmas Fayre, so travelled back to House of Farnell, but although as interesting and colourful, didn't buy, but observed a customer spending nearly £20 on 3 wee ballerina tree ornaments. Ouch!!! We went on to the Silverwell's Garden Centre, and WOW!! always never disappoints and was bigger than year before. I bought lots of nice tree decorations for far less than price of House of Farnell. Also the money it rakes in - time the car park was gravelled or tarmaced, as all the mud is so off putting.

However felt like the member of staff was coming behind us fixing things we had touched, picked up etc. Not overly friendly. Lunch was not great.Waitress was not friendly at all- asked questions and got rather snippy replies. Children's food was basically untouched as not great. Generally find when in public with my children the waitress will address them directly or ask questions or generally chat. This one was cold- looked as though she looked down on our party. Very weird atmosphere and not made to feel welcomed or comfortable. Will not be back which is a shame. Not child friendly and expensive for what it was.

We visited this wee haven on recommendation from friends of ours, and what a good decision! When you arrive, if you want to eat in the cafe, you put your name on the list by the door and whilst you browse the shop, they call on you when it's your turn. We entered the shop for me to realise I'd been before with family many moons ago! It's a gorgeous shop. All Danish-inspired decor and accessories for a home. We picked up a lovely little copper basket and 3 little copper Christmas baubles for about £20 in total. They have the shop laid out by style/colour; all the copper decor is together, all the white/silver stuff is together, children's decor and accessories is kept together... You get the idea. The thing to remember is that almost everything you see is probably for sale!We went to the cafe before we were called but we had finished shopping and there was space for us. We both ordered a Rosetta which is a Danish style roll. I had egg mayonnaise which has chopped apple and red onion throughout which was super yummy! My boyfriend ordered the special, can't remember the name as it was Danish but it was basically meatballs with cheese and cranberry sauce which was also delicious! Swiftly followed by a custard and cinnamon pastry. Will definitely return in the future, it's gorgeous inside and out and I definitely recommend the cafe. Not a huge menu but all sounds (and is!) tasty! Perfect time of year to go is near to Christmas as it is Christmas orientated but all year it is open!

Basically its a beautiful old school building with wood burning stoves, Xmas stockings hung etc with lovely 'different' gift and decorating ideas - you just have to buy something. I have been going to House of Farnell for years and loved it. This year the staff were very unfriendly. I had to change the booking of my table because I was running late, I phoned to let them know this. I was advised they were very busy which would indicate they would have no problem giving my table away. I had put my name down for a table when one became available. I didn't think this would be a problem. Well it was. I was meeting my friend there, my friend overheard the staff speaking about us and were rude because we wanted to change the time of our table. My wife and I visited here recently due to a number of people having waxed lyrical over it. Yes it's nice, yes they have a pretty shop but it's nothing out of the ordinary. Coffee and danish were fine but nothing note worthy. The shop, very rustic and pretty, was full of the kind of crafty christmas decorations that cost a fortune shabby chic if you will or 'overpriced tat' as I like to more accurately describe it. We'll probably pop in for a coffee if we happen to be passing by Farnell but won't be going out of our way go back. My mark for value is not for the food which I consider was average but for the outrageously priced decorations.

I took my sister to visit the House of Farnell on a bright winter's day last week. The countryside around Brechin was picture postcard perfect and we slowed to let some colourful pheasants cross the windy road. We did not stop for lunch but carried off some Danish pastries fresh from the oven to share with some friends we were visiting later in the day. Scrumptious. I bought some amazing little three legged ceramic dishes which stand a little taller than other white tableware I have and I love their asymmetric, arty look. Engaging Paula, the owner, in conversation about a previous purchase which sits outside my front door, she gave me some floral art hints which inspired me to go home and add some oasis to the tall container we had discussed and bring in some cones and berry-laden branches from my garden. I love the House of Farnell and I have always found Paula charming and generous with her time and advice. I do have favourite things on the simple lunch menu and usually settle for a half rosetta roll with cheese and ham served with house coleslaw salad but my favourite thing is just to take my time and really look and appreciate fully all the decorative ideas which abound inside and out.

My mothers birthday falls at the end of September and so every year we visit the shop in Farnell usually within the first week of it opening. It is a highly anticipated day out. The atmosphere and decorations are magical and always herald in the start of our Christmas celebrations. This year we had booked a table in the cafe as we knew how busy it could be. When we arrived our numbers had swollen by two and we were told this would be fine. The waitress came to get us in in the shop when our table was ready. I personally can't resist the smell of the cinnamon Danish that greets you as you step threw the door and so that's what I ordered. There was a bit of a wait for them coming out the oven which was explained to me and I was happy to wait as i think they are worth it! As always it was warm and delicious. The rest of the party got cake or Danish and everyone enjoyed them. A lovely, magical day out!

Having read some of the previous reviews I can wholeheartedly disagree with all negative comments regarding staff friendliness. We visited at 2:30pm for a late lunch, waited at the 'please wait to be seated' sign for a member of staff to allow us to go ahead as there were a few two seater tables clearly available and set up. We sat down to have a browse through the menu. A few moments later we were asked for our drinks order and were ready to order food so did this. Ham panini served with proper sliced ham, tuna and mozzarella with proper sliced (not cheap grated!) mozzarella. It was fab! No soup left at 2:30pm - it was a week day however, possibly an idea to keep some soup as standby? - realise this may be to keep everything fresh! The shop itself is beautifully laid out and dressed, that doesn't happen overnight. Prices fine for what you get. Paula exceptionally friendly and helpful, we asked about a few traditional Danish things and the answers were very helpful indeed. Will be returning nearer christmas. If you have never been, it is definitely worth a visit. Ignore comments by nasties, they clearly want perfection and a red carpet everywhere they go.

On first arriving the first thing that hit us was the lovely smell emanating from the kitchen and a lovely warm welcome from the staff. We were not disappointed, the food was delicious, there was five in our party and we all had the combo with the most delicious Danish pastries to follow. After lunch we all had a wonder round the beautiful shop with it's many Danish delights with to many to choose from a return visit is on the cards very soon. Having read other reviews before our visit we were a little apprehensive but we had the most fantastic time the coffee shop is small for the volume of people that wanted a table but well worth the wait.

Drove out from Montrose to try cafe ... Sat for 10 minutes with no menu, no acknowledgement from any of the staff , got fed up waiting and left . . . Pity , surroundings were nice , but having 4 people in the kitchen and 1 member of staff in the cafe was not the best idea . . . Even when other ladies ventured from the kitchen we were still ignored , poor poor show , won't be returning . . M.Thomson

Arrived on a Thursday lunch time having never been here before. Went to take a seat in the cafe only to be shouted at to wait! There was no signs up indicating that you had to wait to be seated. We were then shown to one of 4 empty tables. It took the waitress 10 minutes to come and take our order, that was after we asked for her to come over. She took the order but I asked for one panini to be minus coleslaw as I had a dairy intolerance. Was told I could leave it at the side! I would have thought that this would have been a waste of food! We waited a further 30 minutes for all the paninis to be delivered to the table but our drinks order hadn't arrived. We asked about our drinks & was told to be patient! They were served quickly thereafter. Just starting to eat the food, the waitress came over and asked us to move table as there were other people requiring the table that we were sitting at. With no help from the waitress we had to move all our food & beverages ourselves to another table. The party who sat at the table that we had been sitting at had the same number of people as ourselves (4) so please tell me why we were moved? The food was average and quite pricey for a panini. The panini was more like focaccia bread than a panini. The salad was minimal & the coleslaw - well it was left at the side of the plate as instructed! The prices were more restaurant prices rather than a cafe. We didn't have a cake as we felt that we weren't wanted but I did notice that there was a glutton free option which was a positive point. Sorry but won't be coming back in a hurray. The shop is beautifully set out but again very expensive but they do say that you get what you pay for but I am not so sure. Was looking forward to a Danish Christmas experience but was left disappointed.

House of Farnell is a little magical place, its great to see all of the wonderful decorations and really gets you in the mood for Christmas. The café serves lovely Danish food, and of the many times I have been there with friends the staff have always been very pleasant. The café does get busy so do remember to put your name on the waiting list as you enter the building before you look around the xmas shop, this usually means you will have a table waiting for you when you have finished having a look around. Some gifts are expensive but they are not forcing you to buy anything, I always find it a lovely cosy place to just go and have a look at and have a bite to eat with friends. I found some of the other comments on here very rude and unpleasant and totally untrue, its worth a visit to find out for yourself and I am sure you wont be disappointed. x

The minute I entered the building I was totally bowled over by the beauty, warmth and atmosphere of The House Of Farnell. It is a totally unique shopping experience where the owners have put so much care and attention into making sure you have a lovely visit. Everything for sale is unusual and beautifully displayed. The staff helpful and very pleasant when you ask for assistance. The icing on the cake is to sit in the pretty cafe and enjoy such tasty food and lovely coffee. What a memorable afternoon I spent there. I will be back and thank you so much to everyone involved.

Recently visited this quaint little hidden gem, what a lovely surprise. The signs aren't very enticing and don't do the place any justice. The gift shop is lovely with a real feel for the forthcoming festivities, some items are a bit pricey but there is some beautiful things. The staff were very friendly and helpful explaining the menu, which had a lot of Danish food on it, the hot Danish pasties are highly recommended. I will definitely be paying another visit before Christmas.

Finally after months of searching, I have found a place that can actually make a real flat white. Others may claim they serve flat white coffee, but the result is always the same; a milk scorched weak latte in a small cup. The guys at House of Farnell definitely have the barista skills that ensure I will return time and time again. And it not just the coffee that's fab, we had the lightest, freshly baked scones with delicious home made jam. Don't leave without trying the oven warm Danish pastries. Great service, excellent coffee/cakes and quirky surrounding. Definitely worth a visit.

I am vegetarian and asked if I could have cheese on my sandwich. I was told very bluntly by the cold unfriendly waitress: 'No - you can have tuna or ham&cheese'. OK, thanks but that is really not helpful if you don't eat meat. So basically, if you fit in with their menu of options then you are welcome, otherwise don't bother. Also food is pricey - £7 for a sandwich a a small side salad AND they are not willing to do substitutions! Christmas shop is lovely but way overpriced. It would be cheaper to fly to Copenhagen yourself and buy the stuff.

I just love coming to Paula's Christmas fair. As last year I was able to find good gifts and again at sensibel prices. There are so many lovely things to choose between. In the café my friend and I had a delicious lunch and the Danish speciality cakes with the coffee. A real treat. The staff was so busy but keeping an eye on all and the service was great. We shall surely try to find time to come again before Christmas.

Went for my yearly visit to the House of Farnell this weekend and was really disappointed with the level of service from arrival through to leaving. Firstly, our pre-booked table was given away to someone else. To pass time while we waited for the next table we went to browse the shop which was a struggle to move in (great that it’s busy, however maybe worth putting in an entrance and exit to the shop during busier times and a ‘one way’ type route around), we were then called for our table and told we would have to share with another couple. As advised in the menu and on the website, ‘we cater for special dietary requirements’ I asked the waitress if she could check if there was eggs in the dish I had selected from the menu because I have an allergy, after great hesitation she went to ask and yes there was. I then asked if we could just make a plain ham and cheese on rye bread and again hesitantly felt she had to go and ask then came back and made a smart comment and agreed that I could have this. Just to top off the great manners during our lunch we had the table cleaned and wiped around us as we ate our lunch and then had the bill dumped on the table half way through our first course - that’ll be a no the dessert menu then! After this experience of bad manners it is unlikely I will return. This certainly wasn’t the Christmassy day out that we had hoped for!!

Visited on a busy Sunday and enjoyed browsing the extremely cute and well stocked Christmas/home shop. Some beautiful, good quality products on offer including some unique children's toys. Cafe looked inviting but was packed so we didn't get a chance to sample the delicious looking pastries. Will have to come back! Beautiful old building, warm log fires, products displayed in a thoughtful and interesting way. Shop looks like a christmas grotto when you first come in.A nice surprise in rural Angus - a good place to stop on a country drive.

I have been several times but each time have felt it hasn't been particularly good value for money in the restaurant or the shop. Mostly I have been served by a very pleasant gentleman in the restaurant who chatted and could not have been more helpful. Last time however the waitress, a slight older lady, was abrupt and not particularly friendly. She brought me the wrong drink and when I asked for my original request reluctantly changed it leaving me in no doubt she didn't believe she was wrong. The place itself is nicely set out and has great potential although I think some of the staff need to practise their customer relation skills.

I really enjoyed my lunch and the food was great and the ambience of the restaurant was very good. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and I was made most welcome by the waiter and the other staff. The restaurant was busy but the waiter still found time to chat the everyone and make this such a special place. I have been coming to Farnell for over 50 years and it is one of my favorite places in Scotland. When I visit Farnell the next time I look forward to having lunch again in such a charming restaurant.

We have been goig to House of Farnell for some years. The small restaurant menu is delicious with the Danish doughnuts and pastries to die for. The salad dressings and other food items for sale are excellent. Try the range of balsamic vinegar dressingsThe Scandinavian themed shop is excellent with a Scandinavian theme to items. A wide range of household and decorative gifts that should suit most pockets. Candles, china, glassware, tableware, silk flowers and textiles, Easter and Christmas decorations (as appropriate)

We had a lovely welcome, even though they were busy, and were told which danish pastries were ready now, and which would be out of the oven in five minutes. We had cinnamon spirals and floaty light vanilla custard pastries that we had to wait a few minutes for while they cooked, then had to try and find the will power to allow them to cool a little before we ate them - blimey they were good!! The coffees were also excellent. The restaurant does do meals as well, which looked great, and there was a waiting list for tables by the time we left, so they were popular. And of course, the Christmas Shop attached is out of this world, we drove two hours to get there and were not disappointed. (To be honest, we would have driven that far just for the pastries!)I need to find some points to criticise, so you know I have some discernment! The furniture is a bit ikea-y, and I do prefer a bit more space between tables, and alcoves and nooks. This was just one square room, and you couldn't have fitted in another chair. And I was freezing - that must be a tricky thing for restaurant staff, because they are always running in and out of hot kitchens, it must be hard to spot when the dining room is too cold. I should have just asked them to turn up the heating. Anyway, I loved the place, will definitely be back, will just wear a thicker jumper!Check before you make the journey, they open just for certain months of the year.
