I'd heard some mixed reviews about the Sultan restaurant. However, as one of the only restaurants open on a Sunday evening in Forfar and with an unexpected guest, I tentatively decided to visit this restaurant. I was very disappointed in both the food and service. The food was a poor imitation of Turkish food and the meal was very rushed. There was a strong urgency detected from the manager for us to finish up and leave quickly. We duly paid up and upon leaving we were met by the owner dumping rubbish bins and cardboard recycling all over the pavement. This made it impossible to use the pavement. This is absolutely ignorant for not just customers but all types of pedestrians. There's no way I would visit again nor recommend The Sultan in Forfar. A mediocre meal topped off with appalling customer service.

I'm a bit baffled by the two previous poor reviews, as they certainly didn't tally with our experience at the Sultan. The food was lovely and fresh and while maybe not quite the same as you'd get in Turkey (we've been going there twice a year for about 15 years now), it was certainly what I'd describe as authentic - and very tasty too. The staff were all very friendly - including the young lad who served us. No complaints from us!

Just dined in the Sultan "Turkish" Resaturant 3 Hours ago and whilst our server was very pleasant and polite unfortunately the meal was not what we were expecting, mixed meze to start served with a sliced up Pita bread not Pide or even Ekmek as you would expect, the mezes themselves were uninspiring consisting of store bought humus, tinned or bottled Kuru Fasulye, a smear of mixed salad Yaprak Dolmas out of a tin and tasteless ayse fasulye (green beans) topped with a cheap nasty plain yoghurt For mains we ordered Sultan special kebeab which the ladies said was ok just, and we had Iskender kebab, now I have eaten Iskenders all over Turkey and here in the UK and its always been sliced Donner served on chopped Pide with a tomato and a yoghurt sauce accompanied with rice and salad this one turned out to be chicken shish, donner and some kind of adana kebab served on a bed of rice (no pide) with a tomato sauce and once again the same cheap nasty plain yoghurt with a trickle of salad on the side of the plate, not that this version tasted bad in fact it was rather tasty (apart from the yoghurt) but certainly it was not even close to authentic and therefore a bit of a let down. The whole meal came across as a British persons amateur attempt at Turkish cuisine. Please please please dont go to Turkey and expect your food to be like this because it wont, it will be fresh, full of taste and genuine.

Not been in a Turkish restaurant in a long time - It was my sister and her husband who invited us for a meal in Sultan. First impressions, busy really busy! The restaurant itself is quite small with an open plan kitchen area. Nicely decorated, but a bit dark for my personal taste. Our server was friendly and knowledge regarding all of the dishes. My husband isn't really big on lamb so he ordered what I think might have been the only chicken dish on the menu. He really enjoyed it. We all had various kebab style dishes. Absolutely no complaints - the food was lovely and decent size portions. Really lovely restaurant with a nice atmosphere.

Visited the first time after several recommendations from colleagues.Reserved a table, arrived and seated very quickly. Good atmosphere, like other reviewers say - it is a small place but unlike some places it didn't feel cramped.Fast service, after being seated food was on the table within 15mins.Good choice of food and very tasty. The starter portion sizes are small, especially the meze, fork-full of each choice, if you're lucky and might as well have mixed the choices together as served on very small plate. The main courses were very good and good 'just right' sized portions. Not sure the prices match the portion sizes though. While there, the guy in the kitchen appeared to be having a go at the two female staff on several occasions - couldn't hear what was being said but the facial expressions and hand gestures were enough to know he wasn't happy. Although very unprofessional it did entertain us and the table next to us - populated by 'regulars'.Will visit again but maybe not in a hurry.

booked a table for 6 over a week before. No problem they confirmed on the phone, after consulting with another staff member. Turned up on the busy saturday night to be told they had no such booking! Fair enough, mistakes can happen, but we were left hanging at the front door while staff turned their back to have a discussion. Were then asked if we could leave and go for a drink somewhere else and come back in 15-20 mins and they would try and sort something out. No 'sorry', no acknowledgement a mistake was made, nothing and no confirmation they would definitely have something, as noticed another group further up waiting for a table to become free. We decided to go elsewhere and spend the £180 or so on somewhere that had decent service skills as well as good food. Having eaten here before, was wary of the tendancy they have to try and rush you through your courses and out the door after having what is an average meal where almost every main meal is covered in the exact same sauce, so won't be back and frankly won't miss it either.

Then when it is open its packed and you have to wait for a table which should be a good sign however find for the cost of the food the value for money isn't there. The iskender kebab is tasty but the starters are very expensive for very little eating. Find the staff to be quite rude and felt very rushed to finish, almost like being there is an inconvenience. MORE AT TripAdvisor

Really disappointing first visit. I don't know if I visited on a "bad" night or if perhaps my idea of a quality meal is different from the other reviewers. I have heard rave reviews of this restaurant and had been so looking forward to eating there, I barely ate all day!For a starter, I ordered the halloumi. What did I get for £5.40? 3 small thin slices of grilled cheese, some wet iceberg lettuce and a couple of slices of tomato well past their best. That and the fact that it was served on a saucer and just plonked down on the table in front of me. How can you go wrong with grilled cheese? For mains I ordered the iskender selection. What appeared on the plate in front of me was a plate of boiled rice covered by a selection of kebab meats, smothered in tomato sauce and yoghurt. So much sauce that you couldn't identify what was on the plate. It resembled a car crash, if I'm honest. All this was again accompanied by some wet iceberg lettuce, tomato and onion. I'm not saying the kebabs were rubbish, they were in fact quite tasty. But the presentation and the fact I couldn't tell what was hiding under the sauce, made for a very mediocre dining experience. Determined to find at least one course that would salvage my dining experience, I opted to have a desert. The baklava to be exact. What should have been a warm light flaky pastry, turned out to be a dense cold brick that you could barely get a fork or spoon through. Two bites of this delight were more than enough and I left the rest. I ordered a coffee. What came to the table was a cup of weak black coffee accompanied by a nasty little plastic portion of "dairy free creamer". No jug of milk or cream, just a cheap and nasty subsitute. I don't know about you...but if i'm having a coffee in a restaurant after dinner, the very least I would expect is proper milk with it. The service was mediocre as the waitresses looked like they would rather have been anywhere else than there. I don't think I seen as much as a smile never mind a pleasant word. All in all, a disappointing experience for me from start to finish. While the place doesn't advertise itself as a "fine dining" experience, it should still be a quality dining experience. I won't be back to try it another night. The very fact that every course was found lacking, tells me everything I need to know about the place. I cannot understand all the glowing reviews here. My experience of the food here was quite simply, an utter disappointment.

Don't get me wrong, the food was good and tasted fresh but I wouldn't go raving about it to people. Starter was really good - we had the meze (little bit of everything)and the spicy sausage. Portion was quite small but probably enough in the grand scheme of things but maybe not £10's worth. For main I ordered the Iskender kebab (mixed meats) and my partner ordered the Karasik Izgara - I have to agree with the comments of "they all look the same". There really wasn't much of a difference between the two dishes. Nevertheless the meat did taste very good - better than a kebab from a take away anyway. And the portions were pretty big - I couldn't eat all mine.We went mid-week and were the first table in for the evening so it was very quiet when we went in - didn't think there was much of an atmosphere. At this point, I would like to mention that the kitchen is open plan therefore customers can see their meals being prepared (quite a nice touch). However, another couple soon came in and, Forfar being Forfar, everyone knows everyone so this couple began a conversation with the chef...across the restaurant and rather loudly! So we had to listen while eating our starters...maybe wouldn't have minded but the chef was talking about how ill she had been over Chirstmas with snot everywhere etc. Not what you want to hear while eating a meal! But as the evening went on and more people came in, the atmosphere got better.Overall...Like the Title says, it was alright. It wasn't the best or worst meal I have ever had but I won't be rushing back.

Took my niece out for a few drinks & a meal to celebrate her 20th birthday. On arrival I felt the restaurant was cold. We were seated by a waitress who immediately tried to take orders before we had perused the menu, I tried to order a bottle of wine but the waitress was not listening & kept asking what I wanted a glass of. When I finally made my wish for a bottle of Turkish red understood she rapidly appeared with a bottle already opened. I have always felt that a restaurant which does not display an unopened bottle to the diner is hiding something but decided not to comment for fear of upsetting my niece. The wine was average. Ordering food was an ordeal as the waitress was simply not listening & showed signs that she was not interested in us. My niece ordered a chicken dish which caused no problems but I decided on a mixed dish which I pointed out on the menu. The waitress stated what she thought I wanted, I corrected her but on arrival at the table I was given her choice not mine! The food itself would have been ok if it had not been slathered in tomato puree (described as "our special sauce".A restaurant which used to be very good gives the impression of being an overpriced works canteen. The staff simply did not care & the food was at best average. Better quality Turkish fare is available along the road at Dino's takeaway at a much more reasonable price.

The Sultan provides good food time after time but if you are intending on a large table they are most unhelpful in providing a table after 6pm.

The food was okay but it all seemed very samey to me, everybody ordered something different and it all came out looking like the same thing with the same tomato sauce?

My wife and I dine here once a year on my wife's birthday and we always have a fantastic meal. We always plan to try different dishes, but are always tempted back to the Sultan Special. The service is excellent and it always busy at the weekend, so worth booking in advance.

As I hadn't been to the Sultan for around 25 years, I was slightly apprehensive in case standards had dropped but I needn't have worried. The food was as good as ever. As always I opted for the mezze starter, followed by the pilich special ... both were fresh and full-flavoured. My only gripe was that there was far too much pitta bread lurking under the tomato sauce, which had the effect of making the dish appear enormous when, in fact, it comprised mainly pitta bread. My friend had grilled halloumi followed by the mixed meats. Her starter seemed woefully small compared to mine, though her gargantuan main course more than made up for it! We were seated at the very back of the restaurant near the toilets - an area which was quite dimly lit and devoid of character - but it didn't really bother us. For a more romantic meal it would be advisable to ask for a table nearer the front of the restaurant. I'd definitely go again (hopefully sooner rather than later!) as the food is good, rustic and totally authentic.

Avoid, unless you're happy to pay about £13 for a kebab. When you order lamb cutlets at that price, you're expecting something thick and juicy, served on the bone. Not at Sultan: dry, chewy, slender, no bone. Sis kebab, also around £13, was virtually inedible. Rice is stodgy, served clumpy, straight from a hotplate; side salad is lazily thrown together on the side of your plate (regardless of what you're having); and a generic slather of tomato sauce was added to most dishes I could see in the restaurant. Service is good. But given the price they charge, the quality of the food is absolutely shameful and barely a step up from a take away. Very poor.

The Sultan is a lovely little restaurant in Forfar. The food is delicious and the service is very good. Everything is cooked in the open kitchen. We had the hummus for a starter which was very tasty, followed by the iskender which consists of chicken, lamb, lamb chop, rice and yoghurt and tomato sauce. It is a very meaty treat. If I had to be picky I would say that they could be a little more generous with the pitta bread - one cut up and put in a basket. I did hear a few people having to ask for more, a wee bit off putting. That aside, the food is excellent and we'll worth a return again and again.

Here at the weekend, put at the table right next to the toilet, classy! We ordered a starter to share, I got handed a dirty side plate which I returned to the waitress. I ordered he sultan special which consisted of mainly rice, burnt peppers and onions and very little meat on the plate. When you are paying £ 14 per head, expect a lot more than this! Waitresses very rude, impatient when taking your order, scowling and you are made to feel like you shouldn't be bothering them. Won't be back here, left thus place and I was still hungry. It was more like being in the jungle with the amount of rice on the plate! Better off food wise and pocket wise going to the Chinese restaurant next door.

Used to go to the Sultan regularly about 10 years ago but became bored with the same menu year after year... a decade on, thought a re-visit was overdue. Wrong. The menu is unchanged. Presentation and value is worse. A side-plate sized "meze" starter costing £5.50 was dropped in front of me with contents glooped over plate, each part more tasteless than the next. Forget looking forward to decent helping of halloumi...wife eventually found a couple of shreds hidden under half a tomato. 3rd member of party couldn't eat hummus it was so bad (how do you make a mess of hummus?!) Main courses same old meat, presented in same old way, piled on salty, mushy rice and drowned in tomato sauce (same sauce regardless of dish!) Still no draught beer or lager available (come on! It's 2014 for heaven's sake!!! A tinny of John Smiths with my meal is really not good enough!) Only redeeming features were nice coffee to finish and waitresses were nice lassies doing their best so they still earned a decent tip. Premium prices for basic food were charged...pretty poor all round. This place needs overhauled from top to bottom!

The place was absolutely freezing and the food was awful. It was like sitting in a takeaway. Very overpriced for frozen food and 60p if you want bread ( frozen pitta ) with your meal. The mixed starter was rumbled together on a teaplate. Main courses were tasteless and very poor quality.Every single dish was smothered in tomato puree. No idea why it's called a Turkish restaurant, doesn't even resemble Turkish food. Never again, total ripoff.

We booked a table for Saturday evening and returned to a restaurant we used to visit regularly but have been absent for some time. What can I say, from the time we arrived, Pam and the staff looked after us extremely well. Polite, efficient and nothing was too much bother. The food was terrific, cooked well, very good portions and served swiftly. Starter, main, bottle of wine and coffee all for under £60, good value.I would recommend a visit if your looking for great food with a difference. BUT, remember to book to save disappointment and I would recommend an early sitting as it tends to be very busy at weekends.

This was our first visit to the Sultan Restaurant in Forfar and we were not disappointed. Booking is advisable because as it was Friday night the restaurant was very busy. Friendly waitress took our order and it was served promptly. The Donor Kebab was excellent with the meat nicely cooked without being greasy which was most enjoyable. The other dishes were equally good. We shall definitely return.

An Adana Kebab is a minced lamb kebab, rather spicy, generally served with rice and a salad. But at Sultan's, it's a standard minced meat kebab, served for some reason on an oval metal serving dish, over a piece of pitta bread, and sluiced with half a pint or more of spicy tomato gloop, with a handful of chopped iceberg lettuce and a handful of mixed salad dropped into the mixture. An awful meal backed by charmless service. Pass this one by - and if your'e in London, head over the Harringay Green Lanes and take your pick of the Turkish places there......For what it was - extortionate.
