One of Hillsboro’s best pub eateries. Little pub bar the front and restaurant at the back. Nothing unusual - just friendly and prompt service. I was particularly pleased with my halibut steak on mashed potatoes and tenderstem broccoli, washed down with an icy cold lager beer. Well worth a visit.

6 of us went out to eat for lunch and we had a great time. The food was absolutely excellent. The top dishes were the spinach and pine nut lasagna, the chicken and roast ham pasta and the sausages with champ. The food all came out quickly and beautifully served. The portions were massive (perhaps a little too big) but that’s not really something worth complaining about. The service was good but we they could have been a little more attentive at the start as I had to go over to a waiter to get their attention but once we had order the service was excellent. The restaurant itself looked lovely and well put together and had a good atmosphere. Overall a wonderful meal and we most likely will return.

Almost 5 stars however, the creme brulee was probably the worst I have ever had. Made 4 stars as the seafood chowder was one of the best, so it balanced out. For the price of £9 I did however expect a decent creme brulee which is one of the reasons we chose this place as we were really just craving starters and dessert. Lovely atmosphere except when the patio door was left open and the smoke drifted in, Overall, the starters were great, the atmosphere was fun, I would go back, just not order the creme brulee 😁

My family and I went for lunch yesterday and we ordered the beef burger (no bacon), the salmon, and the battered haddock and chips. The beef burger was very juicy and delicious, the fries that came with the burger though were cut very small and they were oily too. The salmon fillet was good, the plate had a lot of mashed potatoes and the broccoli was hard and undercooked. Lastly, the haddock was good but not great as well, the batter was soft rather than crispy. Good experience overall but not great. Was expecting better compared to the value we paid. The food took a very long time to be served and we kept hearing loud glass bottles bang from the bar behind our table, I was startled a few times.

I mean, it's not exactly rocket science when you order a cheese board and some drinks.. If they had just followed the basics which are never - ever serve stale crackers I guess it would of been ok, possibly 3.5 (or 4 at a push) out of 5 stars. However, for what we paid for, I will have to resort to Google reviews to at least keep the owner / manager up to speed, and to manage expectations for anyone who would be after something similar to us. We used to be regulars at the Hillside, driving from Banbridge at the time, but unfortunately the quality of food & service was slowly deteriorating after they did that re-decor (a good 7-8 years ago it must of been). Which is why we stopped going; Unfortunately. Because it was a really nice place, in a really nice spot.

Arrived into the hillside and went straight to the bar to ask if they were still serving food as it was around 2pm. This was no problem - asked the bartender could we sit anywhere which she said was fine, as it wasn’t very busy and plenty of tables available. No menus were given, had to go and ask for a menu, after stating we were in for food. Starters were lovely and came out in good time however sat in front of us for quite some time without being cleared. When are mains appeared one was completely wrong, staff were able to get the correct main after the issue had been voice. I had basically finished my main by the time my partners meal had arrived. Same thing happened for dessert..wrong dessert came out as well from what we ordered. My partner had finished his dessert by the time mine had arrived. During are meal no one came to ask if everything was okay, some basic training is definitely need for front of house staff. However food was lovely.

Dining area at the back is open and more contemporary with a more rustic and cosy bar area at the front with an open fire. Nice and quiet, no trouble hearing conversation, although I would like to experience the live music some time, which I believe is on Wednesday nights. We attend the hillside on a fairly regular basis and have done since our dog was 10 weeks old (it was his very first day out). We always attended here even driving miles on occasion as our dog was always welcome so it made for a pleasant day out, well that is up until recently where dogs are no longer allowed after 5pm. Considering we liked to attend for our evening meal this no longer appeals to us, disappointing as we always loved the place but the last time we attended for food we had to sit outside on the wet seats despite the pub areas being quiet as only 3 people were in the pub area with the full section behind the door not having one person there. This has really put us off and as we normally only came to Hillsborough for a family day out, we probably won’t come back to be honest especially as the meals we ordered had scraps ends posing as a portion of chips

We went to the hillside today for Sunday lunch. The bar was lovely and welcoming but the restaurant was cold and quiet. After ordering the staff had to come back 5 minutes later to ask what the order was because the couldn’t remember it. 45 minutes after ordering we had to go and ask where our meal was my 4 year old son had received his meal and finished it but the 4 adults hadn’t received their main meals. The staff came nowhere near us and just stood talking to each other and we had to go to the bar to order more drinks which never arrived until we went 15 minutes later to ask for again. The staff didn’t come to ask if we needed anything or to ask if we wanted dessert or coffee. Over 2 hours after we arrived my 4 year old son was so frustrated he got up and went to find staff to order a milkshake and icecream for his desert. 20 minutes after waiting for this the milkshake arrived…. We are home now and still waiting for his icecream that never arrived which the staff the tried to bill us for. We would have all had coffee and deserts if anyone had come near us to ask but left without and over 2 & 1/2 hours after our reservation time. Food was lovely… restaurant staff terrible and the restaurant was very quiet so can’t even say they where busy.

Starters were nice, but one of the mains had fries that had obviously been hanging around under a heat lamp for a while, managing to be both overcooked and floppy. Mistakes happen etc but you just wouldn't send those out ever. It's maybe a small thing but that lack of attention to detail is poor imho. Especially as the prices are a little above avg. To be fair the staff were good and sorted it but it shouldn't ever happen unless no one is checking the orders as they go out.

Lovely warm welcome with an open fire and always lots of well behaved (most of the time!) dogs to greet you. This is a standout feature of the Hillside and we always love coming in here. As for the restaurant, it can be a bit hit and miss but could depend on what time you go. We've happened to eat here twice in the past couple of months at Saturday lunchtime and have had two completely different experiences. The first would have been a 2 star as the restaurant was virtually empty with food being sent back from another table, ours wasn't hot and portions were meagre. The restaurant was very cold and we wished we had brought thick sweaters. The second visit last week was much better with more generous portions of hot food, and a bit warmer with an electric heater on (why not light the wood burner?) and busier but maybe because the rugby was on. The next time we go, we'll eat at the bar and get the best of both worlds. And a bit of advice, don't set your heart on something on the website menu as it may not be on the one you get on the day...
