Exceptional. From the moment I stepped foot in this restaurant the service was impeccable. I visited Manchester and came here on a recommendation. Dan served me for most of the evening however (he was fantastic) but I was blown away by the fact everyone visited to speak with me in delivery of food as well as check backs. The food was sensational (I had the tasting menu) and the whole exodus was just wonderful. Thank you for having me, I’ll be back next time I’m in Manchester.

Loved this restaurant in Manchester city centre. Creative ever changing menu with an emphasis on sharing. The atmosphere was laid back, the staff were all really friendly and helpful with recommendations and there was also an excellent wine list. The food was fantastic, there's some talented people working in that kitchen

I found it rather bland and overrated. We let the restaurant choose dishes for and were given mostly veggie dishes that didn’t pack much flavour. Overall we were very disappointed.

Don’t let them choose your dishes, you’ll end up with majority veggie. Very small portions, lacking flavour, the ragu had about a teaspoon of meat in it. Overpriced, I’d give a swerve, there are much better places to eat in Manchester

This restaurant is incredible, so much so that we went back after two days during our four-day stay! The food is simple but original, well-presented, perfectly cooked, and very tasty. Everything! We had the tasting menu, and the second time it was slightly different but still delicious. The service was fantastic, from the welcome to the table service: everyone seemed happy to see us, and the food was served very quickly. We finished all nine courses in just an hour! The open kitchen is spotless and very well organized: everyone seems to know exactly what to do and how to move without getting in each other’s way. The only thing that disappointed me was that, on our second visit, they took away a honey dessert I didn’t eat. Although I was full and didn’t want another dessert, when my husband mentioned to the manager that I don’t like honey, I would have expected some acknowledgment. Instead, nothing. She happily replied, “and this one has a lot of it!” but didn’t offer to bring anything else. It’s a shame, otherwise, I would have definitely given 5 stars. Still, I recommend it and would return.

Heard rave reviews about this place so gave it a go. Service and atmosphere good on a busy Saturday night. We opted for the a la carte/sharing plates. Flavours were good but overall came away feeling disappointed for the price. A single scallop and minimal beef in the Ragu. Turbot seemed barely cooked. Manchester tart was nice but ice cream with plum bland. I appreciate this style of cuisine is what it is and there are subtlety of flavours to be had but for the money it just has an air of pretence for my liking.

Higher Ground in Manchester is an absolute gem! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, with a stylish yet cozy ambiance. The staff were incredibly attentive, knowledgeable, and made sure every detail of our dining experience was perfect. The food was outstanding—each dish bursting with flavor, beautifully presented, and crafted from fresh, local ingredients. The menu offers a creative twist on modern British cuisine, and every bite was a delight. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just enjoying a night out, Higher Ground is a must-visit. Highly recommend!

I really love the Flawd Wine bar and the food there. I had high expectations for what the team could do with an actual kitchen, but these unfortunately weren't met. We had the set menu and the food was nice but the vast majority didn't wow. The best thing we had was the golden beetroot with whipped (some sort of cheese) and quinoa which was lovely; would definitely recommend if you are there. Unfortunately though and considering the price point, everything else was nice enough but a bit dull. I would go back to the wine bar, but I wouldn't come here again.

I came here with my sister and we got the sharing menu as well as 2 oysters each. I think I may have got lucky as one of my oysters was probably the biggest I've had and delicious. Out of the sharing menu the highlights would probably be the pea fritters, the turbot ( we got this instead of the pork because my sister doesn't eat meat), and the dessert. We had a Syrah which was lovely and the service was fantastic, very friendly.

Mostly good. Started of a little underwhelmingly with the tempting-sounding pea fritters, which only taste of the cheese sprinkled on top. Gradually improved, with highlights being the delicious cheese tart, the tomatoes, monkfish and pork dishes. The wines were bizarrely disappointing - house rosé pretty much undrinkable - imagine a wine made of an old glass of red topped up with water... House fizz ok, but a bit more dry and aggressive than most cremants. House red ok, possibly better with a light chill. The service was a combination of exaggeratedly enthusiastic comments on our choices and being rather hurriedly anxious about getting us out before our allotted time elapsed (which we easily did by half an hour...) Ok, ok, this tells you my age but the music was too loud and not to my taste - electronic snare drums to the fore - but you get the picture. So ... some very good things about HG, but there are enough better restaurants of this ilk in Manchester now (hooray!) to make me think that I won't be hurrying back.

During my solo business trip to Manchester, I sought a relaxed atmosphere, positive vibes, and, of course, delectable cuisine. The Michelin guide recommended that I could find all of this at the British bistro bar, Higher Ground, located in the city centre. And they were absolutely correct. Higher Ground truly lived up to its name, standing on a higher ground in terms of quality. Their seasonal sharing menu offered a delightful blend of simplicity and unforgettable flavors. The dishes were straightforward, devoid of confusing Italian, French, or Japanese terminology often used in describing food. The meal was surprisingly invigorating, a quality I wouldn't typically associate with dinner. Every ingredient in each dish was distinct in flavor, creating a harmonious combination. What's more, this delightful experience came at a very reasonable price of £66 for a tasting menu paired with a non-alcoholic beverage. Higher Ground is certainly a place worth remembering and revisiting in the future.

Taken here by our son and his partner as a treat. Heard a lot about it and been to Flawd, so very excited. My opinion on this place is as follows: Nice place, really cool vibe going on, like the mix of different seating areas with the bar seating and floor seating. Staff, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, food came out quickly and all dishes were explained fully. Food was beautifully presented and good flavours, nothing amazing, but all nice. However, portion sizes are very small for the price, certainly not sharing plates. Also, do not agree with 12.5% service tip, would prefer to tip accordingly. When I asked for this to be taken off and we would leave a tip, the server was a little judgemental in her attitude. All of us came out hungry and got a Chinese take away on the way home, not really ideal. Glad I tried it, would I go back, no.

Really disappointing. The food was nice however portion sizes were really small. We completed the set menu (£116 for two) and both were so hungry by the end. I also had a hair in my dessert but they dealt with it quickly and it wasn’t a big deal. We shared the feedback with the staff and definitely wanted to understand why the portions looked the same for a table of 1, 2 and 4. Besides this, it wasn’t a big deal until the manager came over and asked us to repeat the feedback we shared with our server. My boyfriend reiterated that we didn’t think the portions were appropriate for 2 and he responded in quite a demeaning manner. By the end, I jumped in and said regardless of artistic concept that two people who pay £116 for food (no drinks yet) should not be leaving and having to grab a pizza from next door and that the way he was insinuating it was an “us” problem was just making a disappointing experience really uncomfortable. The manager wiped the bill without being asked which was not the point at all and ended up just making us feel even smaller for super reasonable feedback. Really a shame and I think there are much better spots in Manc to try.

We ordered the set menu for two and were bewildered as to how they could possibly justify the portion sizes fit for two people. When we brought this up kindly with the manager he talked down to us as if we didn’t understand fine dining. If you wish to leave a dining experience with a full stomach, avoid this place. The food is nice enough, but massively overpriced and I will not be returning. It’s a real shame as I love the idea of farm to table local ingredients and an ever changing menu. The service was amazing. Super friendly! The food was delicious. Truly gorgeous. For us the wine was a low point. Having read some other reviews I can see the wine is from Flawd, which is a natural wine place. I don’t think it was clear on the menu that the wine was natural. We spent £45 on 4 glasses of different wines and unfortunately didn’t enjoy them. Such a shame when the food was so wonderful. Would suggest some slightly less funky wines on the menu for those who are not quite so experimental in their wine tastes.

Incredible dining experience! We were very struck by how friendly and welcoming everyone is as you walk in. We sat at the communal table which is much more private than we expected. They have a sharing menu which they surprise you with or can choose a la carte. We went with the sharing menu and made it vegetarian (so great that they accommodate without prior arrangement). It was a really great amount of food, and they even accommodated the fact that neither my husband nor I like goats cheese and omitted it from the menu. The lions mane mushroom dish we had was probably one of the best things we’ve eaten and we eat at a lot of Michelin-guide restaurants. Everything was fresh and full of flavor. They have a great selection of wines and I asked for a recommendation in which they poured and allowed me to try before committing. Overall just a wonderful dining experience. Overpriced and disappointing Anywhere where a member of staff explains every dish in great detail including lettuce leaves with a basic/dull dressing on has problems Nothing remotely like coke to drink but rather a limited and unusual/weird list of soft drinks. I’m all for trying something new but as the waitress herself said - sometimes you just want a coke. We ordered the beef twice as we were hungry and it was really small - the first time it came without and the second time with brisket (the best thing we ate) for no rhyme or reason - did they forget the first time round? Provenance is great but the food should also be interesting and tasty. Over £220 for lunch for 2 and only one of us was drinking alcohol. Back to the Ivy for me I’m afraid I feel rather than serving what customers want they are serving what they think customers should want! Pleasant service but food is disappointing and overpriced. 😞 not the birthday meal I was expecting. Oh I forgot - there were 2 desserts - yoghurt with sorrel (why?!) and ice cream with beef lard fudge. I would have loved any pudding except those - I was starving!!!

Emperors new clothes is a perfect description here. Just because you are told something is amazing, don't be fooled. It's quite a nice venue, staff, generally pleasant, but the food is not a patch on other restaurants in Manchester...such as Six by Nico, Spring Gardens...Sexy Fish, Maya, Fenix, Mana, or, Where the Light Gets in, Stockport. Honestly, up your game, here! I've been twice, once for lunch, which was 'ok' and then for an evening with a group of 8 people and the fact we got our taxi to stop at Maccies on the way home, really says it all. I've been to many, many Michelin star and guide restaurants and this was really nothing special. The food generally was quite average and the restaurant extremely noisy. The real insult though was the £34 beef dish, cooked medium rare but the beef was way too chewy. Food is fantastic with some good opportunities to try new stuff or your classics reimagined. We sat at the bar, something I am fond of as you get a bit more of a personal experience. The couple sat next to us got a good bit of insight from the chef on their dishes however we were just given the plates with no dialogue. A bit disappointing as to me this is why you have seats at the pass. The wine selection is exhaustive however staff do a good job of helping you choose something and the wines certainly dont disappoint. The food is well seasoned, okay portions for a small plates restaurant, and you can tell effort is put in throughout. The highlight was desert, their pastry chef has it locked in. Atmosphere has a bit to be desired and like other reviews have stated food was very swift. Service was really good though.

Disappointing dining experience did not meet my expectations in terms of quality of food, very little attention to detail in the presentation of the dishes. Food was served luke warm, with no depth of flavour and all too salty Charcuterie for 4 people was 4 bread rolls still joined together so you had to handle your fellow diners bread to separate it. 12 slices of bresaola Lamb dish was a very small portion not really divisible by 4 as we only got two portions of braised lamb between 4 The desert course was a small bowl of deconstructed rhubarb and custard crumble thrown together in a bowl with absolutely no finesse or fresh rhubarb taste. My biggest complaint was that the only non alcoholic “offerings” (pretentious) were soda water filter water tonic water grape or cherry juice ! I asked for Diet Coke, fresh orange ginger beer cranberry juice. To which the waiter replied we only serve offerings that we can guarantee the source. What does that mean ? Our bill was £380 . The service charge was £40. The quality of food and service does not reflect this price. Will definitely not be back

Booked a table at 6pm. Had the set menu sharing option. Very tasty and had a nice evening. However after being offered an extra cheese option before desert, which we took and was delicious, we were told that ‘time has caught up on us’ and if we’d move to the ‘wine room’. We probably had 25ml of wine left each. We moved thinking we’d sit in an after dinner lounge area and maybe have another drink before leaving. But we were sat on our own in a cold empty ‘store’ room. Although there was wine on the shelves there was also piles of cardboard boxes and rucksacks. We were appalled. Options for the waiter. Don’t offer us the cheese if there is no time. Equally ask us politely if we intended having another drink? If we didn’t then explain that you’ll bring us the bill as we need to get the table ready for next guests. Either wouldn’t have been a problem and a much better solution. We left extremely disappointed with how we were treated at the end of the evening. We would definitely not recommend.

We visited here as my son bought us a voucher having researched "best vegan restaurants in Manchester" So on arrival I asked if they had a vegan menu:No! But we can adapt dishes. OK I will have the bread with vegan butter. Sorry no vegan butter! OK so I had the pea fritters without the cheese & the mashed seude without the smokey butter. Did the reduce the dish prices in half? Not at all. My wife, a Pescatarian had the scallops, Yeh 2 small ones for £14. The house wine at £9 for a small glass was aweful. Pathetically overpriced nonsense!

Moved to the top of ‘favourite restaurants to visit’. Food was excellent, service was impeccable. My friend is Vegan/plant based and our waiter took time to explain the options available. I asked for wine pairing options and again our waiter was very knowledgeable. Overall would highly recommend, every dish was outstanding, atmosphere was lovely. It was nice to be away from the nouveau Instagram crowd that seem to have smothered the Manchester food scene.

Fantastic place with a superb menu which is heavily veggie base although not a veggie restaurant. Stand out dishes for us were the cheddar tart, leeks with cod roe and the malt chocolate tart. In fact next time I’m not sharing and having those for myself. We did the a La carte menu but will try the tasting next time just to see how it compares, between us we ordered 6 smaller dishes, 2 bigger ones and 2 desserts. We are not big people but like our food. We felt that was more than enough and next time will prob have 1 bigger dish or none as our view was that they were the least impressive albeit still excellent all the same. We also extended our dry January into February and the choice of non alcoholic drinks were excellent. I’d recommend the brew lo and Muri. Also I’d recommend a counter seat if you go as a couple or 2 as it’s nice seeing the kitchen at work and lively.

We knew the food was going to be fabulous but the service was second to none! Friendly, attentive and unobtrusive. The food was a delight. The sharing menu was course after course of deliciousness! The stand-outs were the ham, the ragu, the pea fritters and the rhubarb. Definitely recommend and definitely will be back! Thank you Higher Ground!

I went for the set lunch menu with the cheese platter option just before the dessert. Delicious food and excellent service. It was surprisingly filling too as someone who can normally eat quite a bit. I was sat at the Bar as a solo diner and it was a really lovely meal. I was probably there for around 90mins start to finish. Great variety of non-alcoholic beverages too

Heard good things about Higher Ground after it was awarded a Bib Gourmand. Food was delicious and the service was very friendly and attentive. Unfortunately I was disappointed to see a compulsory service charge on the bill. When did this become a thing?

We have been talking about going to HG for a while. What took us so long? Food, service and ambience were spot on! We went for the taster menu, one diner was veggie and dishes were adapted to accommodate. All plates were well presented, some of the best tasting food we have had in a long time! We asked that our wine be chosen for us. We didn’t decide on anything which was perfect for us. Wines complimented the dishes and the whole evening was just so good. Thank you to the team at Higher Ground!! We will be back!!!

This is the best food I have ever eaten! I’ve eaten in the best restaurants but this surpasses most! Every dish had so many layers that made you search - wonderful combinations. On top of that the service was outstanding- so friendly so knowledgeable and so welcoming! Fabulous in every respect.

Went with my mates for my 35th birthday. Everyone loved the food. The idea of sharing a tasting menu was a welcoming experience as everyone got involved. Portions are generous and staff are attentive, professional and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend it.

We had the January tasting menu and whilst the food and wine were good, it was the service that was best. Considering how pricey tasting menus can be though, this was £55pp for six courses and would recommend. We got two additional side dishes and were stuffed by the end.

Really great service from all the staff, totally exceptional, not stuffy or overly pretentious, and also not too casual. George especially was fantastic and deserves a special mention. Food was great and super tasty. Only rated it a 4/5 as possibly didn’t quite have the same wow factor for the price. All completely delicious though and can’t really put a finger on why it wouldn’t be 5/5. Perfect restaurant for an intimate special occasion.

Ancoats restaurant now closed, unfortunately, as we found out when following Google Maps! Rang to book a table not realising I was speaking to their place in Altrincham. I'm sure it would have been very nice...
