Heritage by Matt Gillan in Mid Sussex

Dreadful service and that was just trying to make a booking. Having been before, we wanted to return for a friends birthday and I tired to book on line when away on holiday. The date I wanted didn’t come up so I e mailed and got a reply saying that the dates hadn’t been released yet which was quite obvious. No further information was given so I called on return from holiday and when someone eventually answered the phone I was advised to e mail them which I did. About a week later I saw on social media that the restaurant was taking a different direction and would only be doing lunches on certain occasions. I was really disappointed and booked elsewhere. I subsequently received another e mail a little later saying that lunches were available and I was delighted to see that one of the dates was the one we had chosen so I went ahead and booked and cancelled the other restaurant. Just a week before we were due to go I received an e mail saying that we couldn’t go as they weren’t able to offer their normal standard of service on the day in question and that was followed by an on line cancellation some 2 days after. I then rebooked the restaurant I had cancelled. I have since e mailed to express my disappointment but I’ve not heard a word back. I am appalled at the service and unreliability and wouldn’t recommend at all.

After reading really good reviews, we decided to make a booking at the Heritage for our special wedding anniversary. After the booking was made, we were sent a questionnaire asking us if the booking was due to a special occasion. As we completed the questionnaire, we expected that our special occasion would be acknowledged on the arrival at least with a glass of bubbly. We were however very wrong as there was no acknowledgment whatsoever. The restaurant didn’t make a great impression on us neither. It’s in a real need of refurbishment, dead insects on the window did not help either. We were served by a nice and polite staff members however due to a large birthday party, there was a massive delay in food service. At one point we were waiting for a dish for over 45 minutes. All together, 6 course taster meal took us about 4 hours. Not at one point during the meal we were approached by the staff to apologise for the delay. It was only when we received the bill, the apologies were mentioned. The bill however included £30 service charge! The food was lovely and presented beautifully but as the food comes with a high price tag, we expected to be made feel special. The whole experience was however nothing but special. We won’t definitely be returning to the Heritage and will not be recommending the restaurant to our friends or family.

Sadly this place has gone a long way downhill this year. We have eaten well here over the last 5 years, but our lunch one Thursday early in July was a major disappointment and we will not be returning. No sign of Mr Gillan again, only three tables for two occupied40 minute wait for any food, much of which can only have come from the chiller unit humming away in the front garden. Short staffed, glasses of wine not poured from the bottle where we could see them and in one case probably not what we paid for, starter of "chicken parfait" a fancy name for a visually unappealing runny brown substance. All a great fall from the original high standards. We note from their current newsletter that from the end of July they will be moving to a "themed and event based" model that sounds like the end of a sensible lunch in the week. Be warned!

My wife and I are regulars at Heritage, and this is chiefly because of chef/owner Matt Gillan’s stunning food, which continues to impress with its variety and quality. I feel that one Michelin star is not far away. But what really impresses us is the combination of rooms and restaurant. We stayed recently in room 5, and it was a lovely room, great facilities, beautifully decorated and large (see photos). A very clean and expansive bathroom with a shower that beat me up, was also excellent. Follow a great night’s sleep with an English breakfast and juices, toast, croissants (and an excellent menu) and you have, literally, the perfect combination for a night away. We come here to stay quite often, even though we only live 30 minutes away. Why? Because when you leave – and we only ever stay one night – you feel like you’ve been away for a few days, because you’re rested having had the best life (and Matt!) can throw at you. Allied to this we spent a couple of hours at Wakehurst before arriving, as there are several gardens nearby, so its location is not to be sniffed at, either. As the driver of the family, I can also indulge in my love of English sparkling wine, so I can let my hair down and truly relax. As I said above, this place just gives me everything I need for a great night away.

Heritage is an absolute delight. It is situated in a very pretty little village which is quiet and charming. Inside the decor was cool, modern and inviting. We were staying overnight and each room has a slightly different theme. Ours was very comfortable, clean and bright. We had the full tasting menu which was superb. Nine courses which were very well thought out, beautifully presented and very delicious. We also enjoyed the accompanying wine flight which was superb. Mark and the staff were so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and Elizabeth our sommelier did a wonderful job introducing and explaining each very well aligned wine. We had a very fun time as well as enjoying a very fine menu. After a very restful sleep the next morning we enjoyed a great breakfast. Well done to all of the team, Heritage is an absoluet delight and we very much look forward to returning. Thank you for a very very pleasurable time. Highly recommmended.

This was our third visit. It’s definitely somewhere to go for a treat; fantastic food (cheese & pickle parfait…who’d have thought it would be my highlight 😂). Everything very tasty, portions just the right size. We also stayed overnight; bed was very comfortable and the breakfast was also delicious. Can’t fault it, roll on our next treat!

A lovely setting in a quirky small village high street that is a no through road, ample parking. Was originally a pub then a fish restaurant now Heritage. Very friendly atmosphere as soon as you walk in. Choice of 3 course lunch, with / without wine flight or 6 course tasting menu. Food was exceptional both in presentation and taste. Will certainly return.

We had lunch for 3 and all chose the tasting menu with wine flight. The food was stunningly good - better in our opinions than many Michelin starred restaurants that we have visited. The plates were varied in content, taste, presentation and texture and of uniform excellence. Service is friendly and efficient and the ambience light and airy with lovely views over the countryside.

I’ve enjoyed countless meals at Heritage and it continues to be one of my absolute favourite restaurants. I’ve followed Matt’s career with interest, originally enjoying his exquisite food at The Pass. I’ve also eaten in many Michelin starred restaurants and Heritage is right up with them. However, the one thing I would say is that you get to enjoy sensational food, and flawless service without the stuffiness and snobbery that sometimes accompanies fine dining restaurants. As a vegetarian, I never feel short-changed at Heritage. Matt and team create beautiful delicious vegetarian meals which are comparable with the meat and fish plates that my wife enjoys. The ‘snacks’ are always an exciting highlight. We’ve also enjoyed an overnight stay and can highly recommend this too. The team are all excellent and I guarantee you will enjoy a special and memorable meal at Heritage!

Incredible food and evening. Went for a friends 40th. From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left the staff were incredible attentive, yet non-intrusive, the perfect balance. The food was incredible, we were there for 3 hours and could have stayed longer in a great relaxed environment. Loved the cocktails, the staff were amazing and made us any cocktails we wanted! Would return.

Very friendly and a nice place Set menu with very small portions to minute although several courses. Food was very good quality. Interesting wine list with reasonable starting prices along with by the glass also good Not sure if this format is quite what myself & friends who have also been are looking for but if relying on custom for a special occasion they clearly tick the box but not a day to day Venue which they are not trying to be. We have never been disappointed with a meal here. The three snacks ( onion ice cream was sublime ) and three course lunch was delicious; subtle surprising flavours. I wanted to lick my plate. Great service by attentive but unobtrusive staff. We look forward to visiting again.

We have been before and enjoyed lunch here, but this time there were problems. A starter was described as terrine in one place and pate in another. I have never seen runny pate or terrine before and hope never to do so again. The main courses were smaller than before, pork belly in my case and hake for my wife. OK, but not exactly exciting? It might have helped had Mr Gillan been cooking instead of being "away with the admin".

We visited for lunch in mid February and had a great experience - service was quick and attentive and the food was delicious. We had the four course lunch with snacks and found this to be more than enough food and excellent value for money.

This was a great meal and experience, no doubt. The staff were friendly and professional and the food was good but mostly not exceptional. We mostly had the vegetarian menu. The leek starter and the coffee puddings were excellent and the snacks beforehand were also delicious. However, the mushroom pithivier was a bit uninteresting and the dishes were really tiny. If I hadn't eaten them slowly and politely, I could have eaten each course in 3 mouthfuls. The wine was lovely and smooth. The expresso was not as thick punchy as it might have been.

Went with my wife for lunch , have eaten there before and it's still very good , given a nice table in the window as requested and given I don't like anything with vinegar in it they altered the lunch menu accordingly for me , service throughout the lunch was very good and the food was first class would not hesitate to go back and highly recommend the restaurant to anyone , here's to next time.

The staff made this place as warm, friendly and professional. We felt the food was average as some courses lacked flavour and seasoning whilst others were wonderful. We stayed the night and the room was functional and clean but attention to detail lacking. Every diffuser we saw was empty and had been for a while and cheap odd hangers in wardrobe and bedside lamp missing, the small things make a difference. I’m glad we visited but we would not necessarily return.

From the moment we arrived on Sunday until the time we left all the staff we met were helpful friendly and professional.We had the seven course tasting menu,it was imaginative and we enjoyed every mouthful.I had the opportunity to thank the chef Mr Matt Gillan as we left ,he deserves praise for what he is achieving here with his staff. I was given the tasting menu as a birthday present. The staff were lovely and service excellent. - however, the tasting menu was average at best. The accompanying wine was limited and by the end of the meal, nearly 3.5 hours later, I just wanted it over. The atmosphere was zero and we were sat in what looked like a conservatory - my view was a white plastic door and windows - the cheapness of the room made it feel cold and stark. Such a disappointment for a 50th birthday present. Unfortunately I would not recommend.

What a brilliant find! We had a special dinner for 10 for a birthday celebration in a private dining area. From start to finish the Heritage team were really attentive, helpful and professional. Alberto and the whole team in the bar and restaurant weee brilliant. Delivering great service with a smile and joining in some of our fun. Matt created an amazing meal, we had the Heritage 10 course meal which was simply stunning. Matt also presented a signed copy of the Heritage book which tells the story of the Heritage and contains some stunning recipes. I would definitely recommend the Heritage, either for a pit stop drink and a bite to eat or for a special occasion.

What an amazing experience having the Signature Lunch and Wine Flight at Heritage,, the food was delicious and the staff were friendly and attentive. So enjoyed tasting different flavours of wonderfully cooked food paired with just the right wine to compliment the dish.
