Henrys Bay House Restaurant in Dumfries & Galloway

A terrific meal from a really creative and exciting menu. Choosing a starter from the menu was so difficult - they all sounded wonderful - and choosing a main course was just as hard. We both had mussels to start - in a wonderful creamy sauce. French-style sauces are something the chef does really well, like the one on my wife's main course of beef fillet strips. I had a half lobster smothered in garlic butter. My crème brulée for dessert was perfect, freshly made and beautifully presented. We were on a day trip from Ayr. I wish that Ayr had a restaurant of this quality. One quibble . . . fine dining of this quality deserves cloth napkins.

We visited Stranraer in the off season so it was easy to book. When we arrived as it was a sunny day, we were fortunate to be able to sit in one of the outside “bubbles” with views of the bay. We were snug in there! Different experience!! Two of us ordered lobster but the chef had forgotten to inform the serving staff that it wasn’t available! Fiona was very apologetic but we don’t worry too much about things like that! We all enjoyed our food and the service from Fiona and the other girl was excellent. We thought the wine was very pricey but the food was good value.

My wife and I visited today for dinner with our three dogs. We had one of the two private dining geodomes outside which was great! The dome had a fan (of it's too hot), fan heater (if it's too cold), a Bluetooth speaker so we could play some music and at night fairy lights. The staff were fantastic, we never had to wait long for anything and they were friendly, helpful and professional. The food was also very good. I had the haggis bon bons, fillet steak and choc fudge cake while my wife had the baked goats cheese, 1/2 lobster and creme brulé. All were excellent. I would highly recommend a visit here, and doubly so the dome experience.

Visited here Wednesday 25th September 2024 and were seated in the bubble outside. We were here last February and as before were served by Sarah who is a gem. Food is exceptional as is the service. Good menu, reasonably priced. Stranraer should be proud to have this offering. Will definitely return. Thanks Henry.

Absolutely fantastic thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Really attentive and friendly staff. Good menu and brilliant value on the 2 course specials. They do a 3 course special as well but we were to full to take advantage. Very knowledgeable on their gluten free availability and were able to provide a very good portion of gluten free garlic bread and accommodate menu to suit for a coeliac. The restaurant area is very clean and tidy, tables were cleaned with blue roll and spray rather than the usual cloth which has been used on umpteen tables before hand, toilets are well kept and a small selection of toiletries available. Overall for us this was a brilliant place to eat. Highly recommend.

Recommend by staff at Aird Donald campsite, we headed for some lunch and were delighted with this seashore setting. We had our dog and sat in one of the outdoor garden pods with a lovely 180 degrees view of the bay. Although it was a quiet midweek lunch the staff were excellent, friendly and attentive. The food was delicious and freshly prepared. It was beautifully presented, with extra little added touches and good portions. It was one of the highlights of our holiday trip and we highly recommend for a special meal out. Thank you.

Loved the food here! Had the prawn, salmon and avocado then lobster, salad and chips served by excellent staff. Definitely recommend.

Excellent food and service in a smart dining room overlooking the estuary. You must book if you are planning to eat here at the weekend.

This is a MUST go to place to eat. Especially if you like seafood. The food is amazing!! And the staff are so friendly and helpful

I am Coeliac and had a reaction to my ‘gluten free’ meal here. Contacted the restaurant after to be told the meal is GF and so either I must have another allergy (I don’t) or it’s due to cross contamination in the kitchen - which is therefore confirming the procedures are not safe for Coeliacs. Would not recommend if you have an allergy and restaurant were also more defensive than apologetic about the situation.

We had a superb evening meal at Henry's. The food was excellent, the staff were superb and the overall experience was very enjoyable. We had a youngster with us and he, too, was well catered for. Between us we had 3 starters, 4 different main courses and two desserts - all exceptional. Only small downside was the reande of drinks was somewhat limited

Fantastic dining experience. The staff were extremely friendly and very attentive. The food was phenomenal and it was VERY dog friendly sitting in the lovely pod area where you could play your own music and it was heated. Fantastic experience. We have been recommending to friends and family and will be back!

Wide selection of fish and shellfish. Seafood plater is amazing. Lamb shank and duck both perfectly cooked and well presented. We had the three most expensive things on the menu but didn’t grudge any of it. Generally good value for the type and quality of the food offered. Service a wee bit slow but not to the extent you would complain. Coffee was decent.

Whilst holidaying in the area we chose Henry’s to celebrate our wedding anniversary from the great reviews it has received. Those reviews were spot on and we cannot praise the food and the staff enough. Everything was amazing. We were offered one of the pods in the grounds (with heating and music) and it was really special. The chef had even decorated our sweet course in chocolate (see photo). We couldn’t recommend this place enough.

We had a beautiful meal to celebrate our son’s 18th Birthday. The food was first class and the staff could not have been more helpful and accommodating. Thank you for helping to make Fin’s birthday so special.

always a pleasure to eat at Henry's - wish we could do it more often - the food especially the seafood and fish specials are just the best - and the staff kind and attentive (tho on this occasion one of the younger waiting staff maybe had a few training needs) - we'll be back when we can

We had hoped to book here for two evening meals but dogs are not allowed inside the restaurant. They have two outside 'pods', presumably for smokers, but they were already taken for both nights and not quite what we wanted for a cold September evening. I appreciate not everyone wants dogs inside but with so many people on holiday with their pets these days I am surprised they could not offer some area of the restaurant, away from other tables. Other eating places are moving with the times.

I cannot find one element of this restaurant I couldn’t give 5 stars for!!!! We we’re craving Sunday lunch my husband had the Whitebait and I never seen larger fish I went for the parfait and Melba toast just perfect. Main course the beef and Yorkshire pud with perfectly cooked veg. I cannot tell you the last time I had a sweet but could not resist the carrot cake and ice cream sheer heaven all while we’re sat in a beautifully ventilated Dome overlooking Loch Ryan- can’t wait to return.

If there is a better place than this in Scotland I've yet to find it. And if there are better chips on this Earth I've yet to find them. Great service too. Got in just before last orders at 8. Scallops starter to die for followed by steak and aforementioned chips made with locally sourced spuds. Great location overlooking the bay. Wish I had room for dessert but there's always next time!

Ate here during a quick stopover in Stranraer. Very enjoyable with very friendly and helpful staff. Food reasonably priced (I had a Sunday lunch).

Visited Henry’s for Sunday Lunch. Nice selection of food and offered a menu a little different than usual ‘roast’ options. Pleasant surroundings and had room to breathe between tables. Lovely food, well prepared and presented. Reasonably priced so for 2 mains, desserts and coffee was £47. Staff were friendly and attentive.

This has to be one of my favourite dining experiences. My partner and I were visiting Stranraer for the first time in ages and asked a local for recommendations on where to dine. Whilst Henry's wasn't mentioned, we saw it as we arrived in the town and liked the variety of the menu and the location. On enquiring about booking, (on a busy Saturday night), we were met by the owner who was extremely courteous and welcoming and accommodated us at a time mutually acceptable to us both. We were warmly greeted on arrival and the team, (described as so, because that's what they are?), attended to us immediately. The menu is varied and inspired and includes a number of fish dishes and daily specials. I chose the seafood pancake whilst my partner opted for the daily special of hake risotto - both were superb, loaded with seafood cooked to perfection and accompanied by side dishes of vegetables and home made chips. We were very pleased with our choices, the care and attention from the staff, the ambiance of the venue and the value for money. What more can I say?

My wife Leigh and I were there when Joanne B's party left on Friday night. We asked to be moved the minute we were shown to our table nearby when the obviously distressed baby was crying. The boss lady was, in my view, diplomatic and polite but to no avail..... Anyway: The food was spot on, as was the service and we'll definitely be back next time we're headed for the ferry. Don't read too much into the previous review... Read the many, many 5 star reviews. They're by far the better measure of this restaurant.

Senational food and impeccable service from Stuart and Fiona as always. Al covid-19 measurements are consistently enforced whilst still managing to keep a pleasant atmosphere and giving an all-round enjoyable experience. The number one place to eat in the area, second to none.
