Hell Barn Japanese in West Dorset

Stayed here in August 23. Lovely accommodation, spacious and clean. Vikki and Martin are both very helpful. Really relaxed atmosphere. The children loved playing in the games room and the communal garden. We might even come back for another visit. Would highly recommend this accommodation.

Chidnock Grange in the depths of the Dorset countryside, wow, what an amazing setup the lovely owners Vikki and Martin have, made to feel so welcome. We stayed in Maple cottage, which was very cosy, homely and tastefully decorated. Spotlessly clean and had everything you could possibly require. On arrival, beautiful flowers greeted us along with a welcome basket of local bread, butter, marmalade, eggs, milk, tea and coffee. As it was my birthday weekend, a lovely surprise awaited a bottle of bubbles and a birthday card. Such a lovely gesture ❤️ We know the area well, a beautiful part of the country. We walked the 25 minutes back to the main road, giving you a great bus service. The George pub at Chideock made us very welcome, lovely food and drinks, Sunday roast highly recommended. A bit further on a pleasant walk to Seatown. For ramblers, there is plenty of walking directly from Chideock Grange. My husband even got to see a glimpse of Aurora Borealis on Sunday night. So lucky. Plotting our return.

Excellent accommodation in beautiful setting We stayed in Rosemary cottage and had a wonderful, relaxing holiday. We received a warm welcome, the cottage was spotless and very well equipped, providing everything that we needed. The wifi worked really well and we had good mobile signal on site. Guests have access to a large garden, with lots of space for children to let off steam! The games room is really well equipped, with something for all ages! We found this a good location for travelling to lots of places during our stay and found good pub/restaurants to eat locally. We look forward to visiting again soon! The Japanese food mentioned in older reviews, was all the previous owners - the new people have been running the cottages since Easter 2021 and are totally brilliant.

Lovely cottages in a beautiful location and nothing was too much trouble for Shige and Diana who were the perfect hosts. We had a wonderful holiday and have already re-booked to return next year.

It felt like we were transported to Japan over several courses of fantastic food prepared by the owner, Shigeaki, who is Japaneese. Eating in the intimate setting in his own house was wonderful. can't wait to go back with another group of friends soon.

Absolutely beautiful place to stay tucked right in the countryside heaven the garden is immaculate cottage is spotless very comfortable bed all you could need for a pleasant stay on arrival there was t bags, bread, butter ,milk, and biscuits owners greeted us on arrival and were there to say goodbye will definitely go back

No stay at Hell Barn Cottages would be complete without trying owner Shigeaki's fabulous Japanese food. He cooks for residents as well as non-residents, but booking early is highly recommended. I had a generous and utterly fresh plate of fish and vegetable tempura, a perfectly grilled and seasoned fish and the usual Japanese meal accompaniments of miso soup and rice, with a side salad. Having lived in Japan for a long time previously and been so disappointed by most Japanese food in UK restaurants (too expensive when it's good, just yuk when it's bad), the quality and authenticity of this food almost brought tears to my eyes - but not to my wallet! What makes this experience even more surreal and wonderful is that it is totally unexpected to find Japanese food like this in a tiny Dorset village. I hope to go back as soon as possible and I urge everyone else to try this wonderful food, whether they are staying at Hell Barn or not.

We don’t venture out in the evening to eat very often and, just before Christmas, never! Good luck to those who do though. It’s just that restaurants full of raucous alcohol fuelled party goers is just not our scene. Been there done that, had the hangover! We did however wish to have some sort of celebration and ‘catch up’ with our son and his lovely wife before Xmas, preferably somewhere you could hear yourself think. Came across Hell Barn on the internet so booked. Not a table in a restaurant but, the owners delightfully furnished and very spacious, comfortable sitting room. This complete with log fire. Perfect evening and delicious Japanese food cooked by a very attentive, and authentic welcoming Japanese chef! There is the added bonus you can take your own favourite bottle and not suffer the outrageous ‘mark up’ imposed by some restaurants.Thanks for a lovely evening. John and Marion

Fantastic quite getaway, in superb clean accommodation. Dog friendly with nice walks also a garden and a games barn. Only 15 mins drive to westbay. With some nice pubs along the way. Would definitely come back again. Also Japanese food can be ordered cooked fresh and brought to your cottage. lots of local shops and beaches to wander around. A real relaxing place.

My review title refers to the location rather than the food, although a sense of adventure surrounds that too. Do not be put off by the name, Hell Barn is situated well off the beaten track at North Chideock, a picturesque part of West Dorset and is well worth the time and effort to find it. Lunch or dinner can only be booked in advance for a minimum of 4 people, the proprietors, Shige and Diane are the perfect host & hostess, Shige will cook a perfect, authentic Japanese meal of your choice using fresh ingredients, which is both delicious and satisfying, whilst Diane, who is friendly and charming ensures you feel welcomed and generally takes care of the front of house. We lunched there with 2 friends and it really was like eating in the comfort of your own home, (just much tidier in our case) with a private chef. Alcohol is not served but they have no objection to you taking your own. A wonderful concept in a wonderful setting, not to be missed.

Lovely quiet spot, perfect for a relaxing break. We spent a lovely week in Maple cottage, both relaxing and walking the magnificent coast line. The cottage was simply furnished but very comfortable. The welcome pack was lovely and got our holiday off to a good start. We used both pubs in the local village, the short cut to the village is well worth finding, cuts quite a lot of the walk. The gardens are secure and very beautiful, our dog made herself very much at home playing there as we sat on the sun trap patio. Thank you both for a lovely week.

Clean, comfortable, quiet and lovely friendly hosts. Everything you need to hand. Beautiful garden that you can enjoy with family and dogs. Also a good games room. Bread, milk, homemade jam and butter for our use on arrival. We will definitely be back and will be recommending it.

Really enjoyed our stay at Hell Barn. Very clean and tidy, well furnished and equipped. Shige and Diana were very friendly, helpful, and always had time for a chat. We had a lovely Japanese meal. Hopefully this will be the first of many visits.

This Japanese experience was booked as a 70th birthday celebration for around twenty guests. As we were such a large party we were too busy chatting/greeting for the cook before our eyes experience. We brought our own wine/drinks as this seems to be the done thing. The hosts were very friendly and each dish was described (we had chosen what we were eating some weeks in advance). There was plenty of variety for being vegetarian and we didn't miss out on anything. This is not like a pub or restaurant with other guests, but somebody's house and you are a guest so it is very different to just turning up out of the blue. I'd recommend booking with a medium party to enjoy to the full...

We spent a very enjoyable week at Hell Barn Cottages. We very impressed with the cleanliness and the food basket on arrival. The hosts were very helpful and the garden was really beautiful. Thank you for a lovely holiday.

We visited this restaurant as guests of our son. We had all seen it highly rated on Tripadvisor and it certainly lived up to it's reputation. It was a delight to eat freshly cooked, delicious authentic Japanese food in the living room of the owners.

Do not take any notice of the Name , its situated in Hells lane ,If you like sushi , and Japenese food , or are looking at something totally different this is it , unfortunately this is not a restaurant as such you book as a group and you eat in the country kitchen , served prepared cooked by the Japanese owner in front of you , there are also cooking courses available , you will deffinatly have some fun here ,worth a try

We stayed at Hell Barn Cottages (Jasmine) this summer and it has been absolutely lovely. The cottage was spacious, really cosy, well equipped, very clean and quiet. We found everything we needed, including bread, butter, cookies, milk and tea upon our arrival, which was a really nice treat. There is a nice garden which is very well looked after. Our host was very friendly and hospitable, always helpful if we had a question. The area around the cottage is very lovely, too. We enjoyed the walks in the vicinity (especially the one over Colmer's Hill to the hamlet of Symondsbury). We will definitely return!

WE as a family have travelled the world and eaten some amazing food, but the quote from my teenage daughter sums it up.. Shigeaki san's food is pure Heaven... you cannot stay without trying it... something for everyone and huge portions!!

We have eaten three times here whilst staying at Hell Barn Cottages. The food is simple, excellent and very authentic. Shige is happy to share how he cooks the food and what the ingredients are. All the family love it!

We loved our recent stay at Hell Barn cottages. It's in the perfect location and the accommodation, garden and play room are brilliant. We loved returning to our cottage after our days on the beaches. Diana and Shige's Japanese meals are so good we booked twice! Highly recommended!

We were staying at the cottages and booked two meals in advance. The meals were delicious and highly recommended!

I can recommend Hell Barn Cottages without reservation. The cottages are extremely well-equipped – eg. a stairgate and a torch – things you wouldn’t normally find in a rented cottage. They are spotless and Diane and Shige even provide a starter pack of provisions. The gardens are beautiful with furniture for sitting out and play equipment for the children. There is even an indoor games room. It seems to me that they have thought of everything. Our spaniel was made very welcome too. Diane and Shige are the perfect hosts – helpful and accommodating but unobtrusive too. As for the area – a week is not long enough to do all the things available in the area. We went for our second visit at the beginning of June, and we will certainly return again next year.

The studio was cosy and comfortable. Good bed and complete kitchen. Open the door and sit in the beautiful garden facing the east, south and west; Sun all day!! Very good price/quality!!

Something of a surprise to find good Japanese cooking in the wilds of West Dorset but Hell Barn delivers. A friendly welcome in the home of the cook and his wife, informal but careful service and excellent food. A great night out.

Pleasantly surprised by the lovely cottage. Spacious, clean and well kitted out. Area was beautiful - we all enjoyed our stay at Foxglove Cottage and only wish it was longer!

We booked at very short notice, an odd bunch including a 3-year-old, got there late, and kept odd hours, but our hosts were friendly and accommodating to the last. The cottage was comfortable and well appointed: the perfect base for a holiday, or in our case a wedding.

Lovely !!! The cottages are well equipped, very clean and in a lovely, beautiful and quiet area. Our hosts were fantastic, on hand to welcome us and show us around. Stay here and make sure you order their home made Japanese food delivered to your dining table. Something that you should not miss!

We have been regular guests at Hell Barn Cottages over the last three years or so and have tried both the studio and larger cottages. The setting is idyllic, with the cottages nestled in a lush and peaceful hollow, but within easy distance of Bridport, Charmouth and Lyme Regis. The cottages are spotless, with well-equipped kitchens and plenty of puzzles and board games (not to mention the separate games room) for those occasional rainy West Country days. Shige-san and Diana are very welcoming hosts and always make us feel at home immediately. We recommend trying one of the freshly prepared Japanese meals available to order. In short, it is difficult to find fault. The local area is beautiful with a spectacular coastline and a good choice of pubs and restaurants. It is an ideal spot for families, fossil hunting on the Jurassic Coast and rambling.

My husband and I stay at Hell Farm regularly - we love it. The location is great - the cottages are clean, cosy and well equipped. Great value for money and a very warm welcome - try it!

A wonderful place - peaceful, beautifully restored barn cottages with excellent accommodation, hidden down a quiet lane well away from traffic noise. Shige and Diana provide a welcome pack of groceries, and there is an attractive garden with a play area for children and a welcome games room in case of bad weather. My husband and I spent a wonderful week in Maple Cottage at the end of September and the weather was perfect. Seatown and Charmouth beaches are beautiful (pebbles, not sand) and the whole coastal area is stunning. We regret we did not have a Japanese meal but hope to return to Hell Barn in the future. Full marks for Shige and Diana Takezoe!

Idyllisch gelegen, gut ausgestattet und gemütlch eingerichtet haben wir uns sofort wohl gefühlt. Zur Begrüßung standen Butter, Milch, Kekse und Teebeutel bereit. Die Küche enthält alle für den Ferienalltag notwendigen DInge, wir haben nichts vermisst. Der Garten und der Raum mit Billard- und Tischtennisplatten laden zum Aufenthalt ein. Die Gastgeber sind sehr nett, in der richtigen Mischung zurückhaltend und präsent. Das angebotene japanische Essen kann nur empfohlen werden.

Heavenly hospitality at Hell Barn! I decided to spend a week at Hell Barn Cottages with my wife and son after researching many holiday properties in Dorset and reading several reviews online. Hell Barn was just what we expected and more. It is located in a quiet area of Chideock and surrounded by beautiful and untamed green fields and hills as far as the eye can see, like a Dorset countryside painting. It offers easy access to several popular coastal places including Chesil beach and Lyme Regis, which is great for fossil hunting both for children and adults alike. The quality of accommodation is one of the best I have ever come across as it was nicely decorated and included many comforts including towels and bed linen (provided free of charge), a stairgate, on demand heating, power shower, large flat screen TV with loads of channels (for a rainy day), a cupboard full of jigsaws and board games, free WiFi and a washing machine/tumble dryer all in our own cottage. The hosts are friendly and very hospitable and had even left milk, bread, fresh butter, tea and biscuits waiting for us as a welcome present. The main garden outside the cottages is beautifully looked after and a pleasure to spend time in. For the little ones there is a little outdoor playground and an indoor games room which includes table tennis, table football, pool table, a play house and little bikes for toddlers. My son spent a fair amount of time playing in there every day, especially when the weather was wet. The place therefore immediately felt like a home away from home as we didn't have to worry about anything except for having lots of fun on our holiday. In addition, based on my research, Hell Barn is the most competitively priced high quality accommodation in Dorset. For those with adventurous taste buds the hosts offer deliciously home cooked Japanese food, which is an experience I would highly recommend to everyone visiting Hell Barn. To conclude, we thoroughly enjoyed our summer break at Hell Barn and look forward to returning there in the future.

The location of Hell Barn Cottages is idyllic. They’re at the end of a quiet country lane in the heart of the beautiful countryside in this part of Dorset. The thatched farmhouse is delightful and the cottages have been restored to a high standard. The large visitors’ garden is wonderful. The cottages are well equipped, comfortable and spotlessly clean. We had a warm welcome from Shige and Diana and, on one evening, had an authentic Japanese meal cooked by Shige and delivered to our cottage. The food was delightful and we thoroughly recommend trying it. Hell Barn Cottages provide perfect peace and tranquillity in a lovely location and we look forward to returning.
