Good, but not great. ordered £30 worth of delivery multiple items to try and share and it left a lot to be desired in quality, however the name of the shop is absolutely bang on because the absolute unit of a fish that showed up at my door was incredible, filled the whole box and definitely my stomach too, shame it was just a bit meh but that's the tradeoff for massive portions at a cheap price

Popped in here for the first time after a pint at Chesterfield Arms. Massive fish, fantastic chips and bright green mushy peas. Best chippy tea in years. Great value too. Will definitely use in the future, highly recommended.

This place can always be relied upon to provide a good meal. Good selection of food and friendly staff, it's definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

We found this place by chance after a day out and have to say we were all very impressed. The fish, chips and battered sausage tasted very good and were cooked very well. The batter on the fish and sausage was good though not the best I ever had. Nevertheless, they tasted beautiful and were cooked perfectly. The person who served us was very friendly and the portion size was quite big. Great value for money. Next time we are passing through Chesterfield we will definitely be paying it a visit again. I would highly recommend.

Updated Jan 2022: I am sorry to have to write that as loyal customers over the last few years, we were very disappointed at this recent visit to the Crooked Fryer. Unfortunately, after getting home (10+ min drive) we realized that there was a discrepancy in the pre-ordered meal in which a crucial item was missing, despite the staff going through the order prior to leaving the shop. This meant that we had to ring up and come back down to the fish and chip shop to collect the missing item all whist our remaining order was going cold. This review could have been more positive if the management had taken a more professional attitude to the resolution of the issue. A previous encounter with such a situation elsewhere lead to the fish and chip shop redoing the entire order as a courtesy of their mishap. This left a more positive feeling. However, such a resolution was not to be. We were left with a cold fish and chip tea (apart from the new replaced item and individual partial refund) which wasn't even very tasty. The fish nor the chips didn't taste anywhere near as good as before. A simple resolution of a full new order (as above like fellow competition in the industry) would have left a more positive after feeling. First Review (2019): Absolutely delicious, great quality, great service, just great all round. Updated as at Feb 2021. Continues to be excellent fish and chip shop. Very friendly and fantastic service throughout. There are very few 'fantastic' fish & chip shops in the town, and the Crooked Fryer is definitely one of them.

Received the wrong order twice now! So definitely won't be ordering from here again. Was told the driver couldn't bring us the correct food and they couldn't give us a refund or help basically. We were told to contact uber. Absolutely appalling!! *update.... Uber eats doesn't have a contact number!!!!

The BEST gluten free chippy in chesterfield I've tried lots of gluten-free chip shops all over the country and this is in the the 3rd best behind papas in Cleethorpes and fish and chips at 149 Bridlington I appreciate any establishment who make gluten free options but this is the best in chesterfield/Midlands The fish.. large cod the batter was golden brown and cooked to perfection not too crispy and not soggy just right .. the fish itself was nice and thick and was solid when under attack from a folk, it came apart in large chunks and didn't turn to a fish snow texture as cheaper cuts do when over cooked this fish was perfect and can't wait to try the haddock. The chips was cooked perfectly not soggy but not hard and was nice and fluffy we ordered large and couldn't finish them as the portion sizes are huge! The curry sauce a standard gluten free curry sauce that I see more chip shops are now using. Here is the difference some chippies are more water than powder and the viscosity is not correct where as this chip shop probably used more powder in the sauce so it was nice and thick and packed with flavour and was perfect... If you usually have normal curry sauce from chippies than try the gluten free version as my wife and I say it has allot more taste. The sausage was a standard chip shop sausage... Nothing wrong with it and was cooked perfectly We phoned before we went to make sure they did gluten free options and the staff was polite, professional and very knowledgeable The shop itself is very clean and has a 5 star food hygiene rating... Another thing to note as someone with a food allergen when you walk in to an establishment and see the staff looking clean, presentable and hygienic gives you that bit more confidence that the food will be allergies free As a gluten free chippy I'd give this a sold 10 out of 10 I wouldn't change anything.

Excellent food. Popped in there when working down that way.was surprised to find Battered chips like we have by where I live. Wasn't expecting anything special but was met with a friendly welcome and food was great. Even got to try battred calamari. Which was beautiful. Not what I was expecting. If I'm down that way again I will definitely be popping in.

£7 for a large fish (medium at best, see picture), bought this off just eat and when collecting found they MASSIVELY inflate thier just eat prices. For a simple meal for 2 we over paid by neary £5. Nearly £18 for 2 chips, fish, sausage, beans and peas Really feel ripped off!

Had fish and chips for our wedding anniversary (historical thing) delivered by Uber taxi (I thought this may deminsh the quality but it didn't) and can honestly say these are the best fish and chips I have had in my 53 years of life and my wife, stepson and Auntie Kath at 93 agrees. Highly recommended ignore the naysayers.

Best chippy in Chesterfield hands down. Fresh fish, crispy batter, no grease, great service. Ask for chips blanched and they cook them three times! Peeeerfect! Oh and everything in paper and cardboard, so no plastics or polystyrene nasties 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

A place that knows how to cook chips! Crispy chips and chicken tikka kebab, generous portion of chicken and actual salad rather than just the raw cabbage you get in most places. I'll be coming back. Just keep up the standard guys!

We've been a regular here for a good 6 months or so (excluding lock down) and every single time we are more than satisfied 😁 I'm usually a scampi and salad kinda lass but I've tried all sorts as it smells and looks so good in the shop i give into my temptation. The fish cakes, curry sauces, halloumi fries & battered sausage are to die for. I've never been a fan of kebab meat but lately, it's been all i rave about! Love their mixed meat ('specially the donner) salad wraps, smothered with garlic mayo. Totally worth the price. Staff are fantastic and the food is always 10/10. I always and will continue to recommend 😁😁

I don't normally do chip shop chips but these are great the Yorkshire fishcakes and cod are cooked to perfection and so tasty go give them a try you will not be disappointed

We call by regularly given that we're so close. The food is always terrific and service is fine - very quick even when busy. The menu has a great range and I can't say I've been dissatisfied. The portion sizes are really good, especially with the kebabs.

So pleased to see Yorkshire fishcakes on the menu! The potato needs to be thicker though, with a good wedge of fish in the middle, my only criticism. That aside, the chips are perfect and just the right portion size. Kebabs are excellent too and the meat is of good quality and very tasty. A great fish and chip shop, well worth a visit and good value for money.

One of the only places in Chesterfield my vegetarian partner can get battered halloumi which is her favourite. Very generous portions and my kebab wrap was juicy just as it should be instead of that dry crispy meat others may make. Will be returning soon!

Since it has been taken over and renamed as the Crooked Fryer the food is amazing. By far one of the best fish and chips I have ever had from a chip shop. Deffinatly worth driving to get them!

Very disappointed!! Use to use this takeaway when it was codfellas, never been good since with different owners. Used mid-week, food looked like it had been sat in hot cupboard, was very quiet and understandable with the quality of food. Also my order was less than £10 and the girl missed my sausage, won’t return will stick with littlemoor chippy!

Don't use very often ! But usually there chips have a twang ( cooking oil) maybe..donner meat not nice n soft either very chewy etc...there are now new owners but chips still not as tasty.

Always used to use chesters fish n chip shop but no more Harrison's fish n chip shop is the best by far... Food is excellent homemade fish cake are gorgeous The fish is so nice and the batter is light and not greasy And for the chips OMG.... best ever as cooked in beef dripping Highly recommend!!!!

Never open and shuts early as well.
