Hansel and Pretzel 🥨 reminds me of my student days living in Germany. In the 1980s there were many more German bakeries in London. At Kinghtsbridge was the German Food Centre and Chiswick had a nice German café/bakery too. This is a great place for lunch they have Kaiser rolls and the traditional "bröchen" bread rolls lots of nice deli fillings. And I had the cherry crumble it was so delicious. They also sell nice German foods in their shop. I walked along the river Thames from Richmond on a glorious summer day via Ham House. There are tables outside for you lovely cakes and coffee. It reminds me of living in Germany many years ago. It's a little German oasis in West London. So if you are making a river walk along the Thames from Richmond to Kingston (or just in the mood for a country walk) make this lovely German café bakery part of your journey!

As my sister and me are from Austria we liked that German shop, brings back memories. We had a Fleischkäsesemmel which we call a Leberkäsesemmel, I haven't seen it anywhere else before. They have lovely German things to buy from.

I stopped off to buy a few deli bits and cakes, . I read the notice on the door "No more than 2 people in the shop at any one time." I waited until this state of affairs applied and went in. The door was closed despite it being a sunny and warm day. I attempted to open it but without sucess. While I was ordering my food at least 4 other customers came into the shop unchallenged (and its a tiny space). Meanwhile my food was being prepared by a surly young woman not wearing any disposable gloves, The loaf i bought was in a paper bag so weak that it split on the way out rendering it inedible, Nobody offered to help me or commented, it was very poor experience and needless to say I shall not be returning.

This is a delightful community bakery and delicatessen. We have been appreciative customers for many years.Their fine variety of breads and rolls are baked on the premises. The other baked goods are a delicious treat and their meat counter a treasure trove to tingle the taste-buds. For such a small shop, their range of popular German produce is impressive, from jams to beer, wine, chocolate and even favourite sweets. In contrast to some recent reviewers, we have always found the staff infallibly friendly and patient, even during the current pandemic, coping with long queues waiting outside in the cold and the severe problems of re-supply of stock in recent months caused by the Brexit fiasco at our ports. This re-supply problem has since been largely solved and the shelves groan once more with European bounty.Customers have to be aware of all those waiting behind them to be served and not put the very limited number of staff, usually two but often just one, under unreasonable pressure; either through indecision or by trying to fulfil very large orders during peak times. The small size of the shop and the low counters are a challenge to the supervision of toddlers, whose parents are understandably concentrating on the shopping and whose children can better be seen by the counter staff, whose timely interventions should be welcomed rather than protested.

We have been there twice. As we cannot actually go to Germany due to COVID restrictions we can at least drive there... for 1h.30 min. If I make this journey I want to stock up but they don’t seem to like customers who pay £130 per visit... they prefer if you buy 2-3 items and leave. Strange business sense, it is not that we completely depleted their stock, we got few bits of vast array of products. I have mixed feelings whether to return. They certainly do not appreciate if someone wants to spend money there.

Having spent my childhood in Germany, finding this gem was such a delight. Excellent range of produce and an amazing bakery. Great service as well. Can't wait to visit more often.

What a shame that, as other reviewers have noted, a visit to this shop to pick up a treat for the children was spoiled by the little man serving behind the counter. He was uptight, prissy and tried to discipline my two-year-old, which no mother or father ever appreciates. If they can’t treat people reasonably they will lose custom in a part of Ham where there is very little competition. We were spoken to rudely (I heard him commenting on the fact that I wasn’t German to another customer, assuming presumably that I wouldn’t understand) and, having waited for 10 minutes to enter the tiny shop, he then tried to commander our movements. He wouldn’t let my husband in so that he could squeeze another customer in instead. Disappointing. He’s just lost yet another local family.

My German husband and his friends all absolutely love this place! We go there weekly for our bread and pastries hit - excellent quality pastries, and a good variety of deli meats and grocery items for the home. Cakes often get rotated to call if you are looking for something specific. White asparagus can be ordered when in season (YES!!) !Kids love the penny snack jars in the window as well as their favourite sweets and biscuits we only find when we are visiting the in-laws. Everything from choco-muesli to mettwurst, quark, breadcrumbs, traditional cake mixes - they have it.To get the best breads, get there early as there can often be a line upon opening and lots of families load up. We always get there just before opening and purchase several loaves for the coming days. There is always a line of likeminded bread lovers by the time we leave. Highly recommended if you are looking for a taste of Germany or need something specific.

Fresh high quality cake, bread, rolls and the best pretzels! It's always difficult to decide what to buy. There is also chocolate and all sorts of German delicatessen. Lots of sausages and sliced meats. Plus you can have a coffee or a cold drink. Some people buy a lot of things so you sometimes have to be a bit patient, but the staff are always friendly and helpful.

We stopped here on the way back from the Great River Race, just happened to drive past and stopped for brunch. The rye baton bread is delicious, the patisserie cakes are traditional but light and elegant (we couldn't resist the apple cake, carrot cake and Black Forest cherry). We also had filled rolls and hot chocolate which we enjoyed sitting in the sun outside the bakery on their outdoor tables. Great selection of German deli goods too, so happy to find Zigeuner sauce! The staff are really friendly and polite.

The best German bakery/deli in London. Quality and service are outstanding. Many seasonal products on offer that are hard to find (if not impossible to find) elsewhere. They offer hot and cold snacks, a great selection of cakes and breadrolles, cold cuts, sausages and very nice Leberkäs (meatloaf). The store is charming decorated and the stuff is very pleasant. Can't recommend enough.

My friend who lives in Ham introduced me to this amazing deli. We walked back from Richmond Park and stopped there for coffee and cake. Karin had cheesecake and I couldn't resist sachertorte. Both cake and coffee were excellent. K bought some wonderful freshly baked bread that was sliced on the premises. She ordered in German but you don't have to! I took a look around and there were all kinds of goodies including potato salads, lots of sausages, those Mozart chocolates...

the key for a true German bakery is a good selection of bread and Brezel and Rolls.Hansel u Pretzel scores high and prepares them daily fresh, a BIG difference to the acceptance of frozen stuff that gets "heated up" english style. As such Hansel and Pretzel should be applauded as they are unpaid development aid workers for the good taste.

I grew up in Germany & so I have high standards when it comes to German pastries. When this shop opened up down the street from my sister's house I made the trek - and it didn't disappoint. The bienenstich brought me back to my childhood - perfection in a pastry. At Christmastime, too, this spot is my go-to for my holiday favorite Lindt Weihnachts Schokolade. I'm admittedly a vegetarian so I can't speak to the selection of meats & such - but if their sweets are any indication of quality, you're in for a treat.

The chips were cold. I think there are two issues, one is the cold drinks were put in with the hot food and secondly, the driver does multi stops. IT’s a shame because the kebab was very nice.. just cold

Beer was good, sausage was good. Fried potatoes tasty but very oily. Sauerkraut, well, what can I say that others haven’t already said? “Dreadful” comes to mind. Apple strudel was, er, quite honestly, let’s just say the apple strudel at Lidl is better than this by a country mile. Custard was cold - I have never in my life been served cold custard. Waitress was adamant that was how it should be. Really? Chocolate cake - dry and cold, obviously it had been standing around in a cold cupboard for too long. Won’t ever go back & can’t recommend that you give it a try. Yes, it’s a lovely setting but this is clearly a good idea very badly executed. There is plenty of competition for your dining dollars in the immediate vicinity & they’re doing nothing to get you to come back here, so save yourself the disappointment & find somewhere else to eat.
