Hamnavoe in Orkney Islands

Sadly the restaurant did not live up to our expectations. Restaurant itself was lacking in atmosphere. Food was overpriced and lacking in flavours. Very disappointing.

Visited twice during a weeks stay in Stromness. First time was definitely better (mid week). Second time, Saturday evening was a totally different experience. Staff are pleasant but seemed unable to cope with the number of covers. We had to ask for bread, for empty glasses to be removed, and for water to be replaced. Food was ok. Wine list is poor, only one red wine available by the glass, which was very ordinary. When we left, we had to get our own coats, none of the staff made any moves to do so, despite being behind the bar area. A few tweaks and this could be a really nice restaurant, but it’s not there yet.

This was a celebration meal with family. We were welcomed by the lovely staff, it's a small restaurant, a bit like eating in a private dining room. The vegetarian options were limited but nicely served. I really liked the veg tempura starter. A bit expensive, but one must remember that getting supplies to the Northern islands can be difficult. A good wine list though!

Eine kleine, aber feine Speisekarte hebt sich vom Durchschnitt ab. Vorzüglicher Fisch mit raffinierten Beilagen schmeckt völlig anders als in Deutschland, animiert aber zum Nachkochen. Leider sind die Portionen nicht sehr sättigen, deshalb empfiehlt sich eine Nachspeise. Die Schokoladentarte ist ein Kuß in den Magen, aber mit 12 BPD etwas überteuert. Reservierung ist unbedingt erforderlich.

I visited as part of a group of six, while visiting on business. I was hugely impressed, and loved my pork belly starter and tortellini main. Both absolutely delicious and beautifully cooked and presented. Service was efficient and friendly in a distinctive Orcadian way. A real gem.

Le meilleur resto depuis nos 15 derniers jours mais pas donné. La salle est propre, le personnel est pro et la nourriture très bonne. Nous y sommes allés bec nos 2 enfants (d’où la reduc’ sur le prix de leur menu). Au final à 166 points pour 4 dont 2 enfants avec 1 bouteille de vin et 1 dessert pour 4 mais divinement bon! Penser à réserver à l’avance via leur site internet. Pas de vue exceptionnelle mais salle propre.

Great Food, scallops with miso buerre blanc with pickled mushrooms was a joy to behold. The cod was cooked perfectly and the lobster with pasta was amazing. Definitely worth a trip but so book ahead it’s small inside.

It might have been just an unfortunate day to visit but for a small menu it wasn't great they were out of one of the two side dishes and one of the two desserts - meaning there was very limited choice (and no vegetable options to go with my main). Both the starters my husband and I had were lovely and the highlight of the meal. The lobster was fine, but the langoustines were hugely disappointing. For £39 as a main you'd have expected them to come with a carb and some veg (particularly as I'd eaten them at another restaurant nearby for £15 less and had fries and salad with them). They didn't provide any implements to easily get at the meat in the claws - with some other diners using tonic bottles to bash them - which is a waste of good food. Saying all that the ambience was great and the staff very friendly and attentive.

We had a really lovely birthday meal at this restaurant. The food was first class and the service the right balance between attentive and relaxed. Good wine too. The Lobster and the Chocolate desert are particularly worthy of mention (ive never had such thin crisp pastry). Definitely worth a 5☆ review, but a couple of things would have made it even better; (These might seek picky but for the price I think you expect some attention to detail) - the water served to the tables was lovely with the added cucumber, lemon and mint but wasn't chilled nor had any ice. - we had no knife provided for the bread and butter at the start, so used our starter cutlery which then meant reusing it for starters. - each setting had an empty wine glass when we arrived, which then wasn't used for anything despite some diners having wine and us all having water. They ended up just cluttering the table a bit. - chasing the (very delicious) chocolate torte around the plate with a spoon and poking it on there with a finger wasn't the best experience. A desert fork would have helped. Overall though, thankyou for a lovely meal.

Das Ambiente ist sehr nett. Der junge Mann im Service ist sehr freundlich und eifrig, aber es fehlt ihm ein wenig ein guter Lehrer. Wer will in einem guten Restaurant schon mit den Worten „Hi, do you have a reservation?“ begrüsst werden? Das Essen war gut, vor allem die Fischgerichte. Vom „Featherblade beef“ waren wir eher enttäuscht. Alles in allem ein sehr gutes Restaurant mit stolzen Preisen.

Our family dinner for five last night was a truly lovely experience. The service by Morag and her team was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The food was beautifully presented and consistently delicious. The blues music in the background was great and suited the relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant. Wines snd deserts ( and the paired desert wines in particular) were excellent. We were lucky enough to dine on a night when langoustines were available. They were served in amazingly generous quantity for the main dish and cooked to perfection to enhance their succulent flavour. The rolls royce of Orkney seafood!! Deep thanks to chefs Lorenzo and Markus and to all the staff for creating such a truly lovely evening.

I may be biased, but when I walk into a restaurant and the first thing I hear is jazz blues, I already suspect it’s going to be a great place. Hamnavoe did not disappoint. Hamnavoe is a cozy little restaurant, tucked off the main street in Stromness. Reservations are highly recommended. The restaurant was busy, which is also, always a good sign. The staff were attentive, and I was lucky enough to be tended to by Sebastian, whose first night it was at the restaurant. You did fine young man. I first learned of the restaurant from the Orkney.com online newsletter, and as soon as I read the article, I made a reservation. I started with the scallops, and then moved onto the lobster. I then finished with the lemon and honey polenta cake with the Yuzucello. The food was wonderful. Clean plates all around. The front staff were very attentive and very accommodating. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anybody traveling to Stromness. Fact is, I would recommend that people travel out of their way to attend this restaurant. Thank you to the servers. Thank you to the chefs behind the scene. I had a wonderful evening And it was all down to you folks doing a fantastic job and producing wonderful food.

A warm welcome greeted us from professional friendly staff. The place has a lovely warm ambiance. Paired back menu with an interesting fusion of ingredients and flavours, it did not disappoint. Everything cooked and arranged to perfection. This place is small and tucked away off the main walkway and feels very special.

We’ve went here for a special birthday with our 3 year old son. The service could not have been better- he was treated like a respected fellow diner. The waiting staff were attentive yet not intrusive. We had scallops and pork belly, lobster and ox cheek. The cooking is superb- showcasing FRESH LOCAL seafood with an Asian twist with Italian elements too. Absolutely superb food. Price wise I’d rather pay for this level of service and food which was essentially an extra £10-15 compared to our bills elsewhere. Of special note the chef should be commended on his flexibility in catering for a 3 year old- a half portion of ox cheek and a birthday plate! Thank you! A wonderful dining experience for us!

I called prior to our visit and, after a long chat with the owner, I was bitterly disappointed to learn that they would not be opening this season. However I forgot to leave a review following my previous visit, to celebrate my birthday, and I will make amends now. Eating here is like dining at home with new friends and the unpretentious surroundings and warm welcome is not to be missed. Everyone agreed their meal was special but my hand-dived scallops followed by crab gratin was spectacular and would have cost a fortune around the home counties or a king's ransom in the capital. If you are looking for high-end etiquette, or fine dining, then don't bother because this is the real deal delivered by real people with a passion. I for one can't wait to come back another time.

This is a lovely place, tucked into a side street, and warmingly welcome. The menu is small but feels and tastes homemade but beware the cheese in the Queenie Special - it is very strong!

We ate in a couple of places in Stromness and this was the best. However it would rank as only average in a larger town. Costs on Orkney are more than on the mainland which is understandable. In September it only seems to be open at weekends and it wasn't very easy getting in touch. We shared a starter which I think were crab-balls which were fine - just nothing special. We stumbled upon this pretty little harbour yesterday when looking for somewhere to walk. We walked to the lighthouse, no mean feat because you had to climb over a long stretch of rocks to get to it.Going wasn’t too bad but the way back was a bit treacherous as it had rained and the rocks were slippery. My foot slipped down a crevice and twisted. We had real trouble trying to get it out. It was still worth it though because just like the rest of Shetland it was amazing!!

At The Hamnavoe you are assured a warm welcome, great service and wonderful food - and on this visit the five of us enjoyed all three in abundance! A great evening enjoyed by all - I especially enjoyed the scallop and monkfish dish and the fish soup as to die for! The Hamnavoe Restaurant is only open for fine dining during the summer months, and it is so good that you have to book, sometimes weeks in advance. Whatever time you book, your table is reserved for the entire evening so you never have a sense of being rushed.The staff are very accommodating and cope well with allergies and food intolerances, as well as being subtle in their service.Both the food and beverage menus are varied and comprehensive. Food is well cooked and presented.The walls are effectively an art gallery for the local paintings of the late Ian MacInnes, who was Rector of Stromness Academy.One word of warning, the approach to the restaurant is up some uneven stone steps [slippery in the wet]from Graham Place and there are no guaranteed parking spaces in the vicinity. Consequently, it may not be an appropriate venue for somebody with mobility problems.

After really nice starters (chowder and local fried fishballs) we tried some fish, which was better than average, but not as good as starters. The service was excellent. This restaurant could however do much more, if it relocated into some bigger space with A/C - the air was very heavy at the end of the evening.

Glad we booked in April. Lovely small restaurant. Staff are tremendous. They don’t try and push you to finish. There is only 1 sitting in the evening. Food is very tasty and plentiful. You can’t just turn up and get a table. Booking ahead is a must. I would recommend at least 2 weeks in advance for a table.

This place is seriously good especially if you like fish. Ate here with friends and was so impressed i booked to return on my own later in the week. The restaurant is tucked away in one of Stromness’ delightful side streets. Upon entering we were struck by the atmosphere of the place. A roaring coal fire and interesting artwork and decor gave it a special feel. We shared a starter of Hairy Tatties which were delicious. I had monkfish for main course and my wife had lamb ragout in galia melon. Both were v good but the lamb was a total winner. We shared a dessert of pavlova which was also v good. Total bill incl a bottle of wine and coffee £86.00. Not to be missed.

We had a delicious meal here. We booked well in advance, and asked the host if there was anything my dairy intolerant husband could have. A special menu was prepared which was great and really appreciated. He had locally sourced scallops as a starter, then a fillet of tusk with a fennel sauce. I had deep fried salted cod balls to start, then cod stuffed with crab, delicious! The dessert for me was a vanilla panna cotta which was very nice, but my husband had the better dessert - pavlova with rose syrup and fresh fruit. OMG was his delicious. The staff was really friendly, and we had a really nice chat with our server just before we left about life on the island. A really good experience and I'd recommend a visit if you're visiting Orkney. Remember to book ahead - the restaurant on the night we were there was completely full. If you're using a wheelchair, there's steps you need to navigate to get to the restaurant from the high street, so look at a map and access it from the back which has no steps.

We went here for our last meal in Orkney,and it didn’t disappoint.It’s quite small,so booking is essential, and do it early. There were only two waitresses,one of whom was the owners’ daughter, but service was efficient and the atmosphere relaxed. They had sold out of our chosen starter of hairy tatties (!) so we had the smoked fish and mushroom terrine which was delicious.As was our main of haddock stuffed with crab -and it really was stuffed. The best of Orkney produce perfectly cooked. Thoroughly recommended.

#1 in Stromness for a reason, other places have good food but these guys are a notch above. Perfectly cooked salmon (we're from Seattle so have some idea) and stuffed fish that was amazing. Small, intimate atmosphere so book ahead!

Were staying in Kirkwall but drove over to Stromness to eat at Hamnavoe as we had seen the good reviews.

We've finally been to this restaurant, which you definitely have to book for, and it's clear why! It's quite small, but not at all cramped, and the food and service are excellent. There isn't a huge choice of food or drinks, and that's a good thing, because it means they can do it all well.

We booked ahead and the restaurant was fairly full for a Wednesday ( it is small) . The food was just fabulous, I had smoked haddock with mushrooms in a lobster sauce for a starter- exquisite. We had no space for pudding although the cheeseboard looked great

I’ve had the pleasure of eating at the Hamnavoe twice in the last few weeks and am really impressed by the food, service and ambience.

We booked in advance and after a poor experience in a noted restaurant on the mainland the night before this was a complete contrast. The staff were attentive and keen to serve, they knew their stuff and were able to talk about the food with some passion. The small restaurant was busy and there are very few places to eat in Stromness so definitely book your restaurants beforehand. Food was very good and we enjoyed our meal Fish seems to be particularly well cooked and inventive dishes.

Highly reviewed, this place was on our A-list to visit. It didn’t disappoint. From the booking process, during which they made good efforts to accommodate a special request, to the quality of food, it was a memorable experience. The food is truly original, with flavours clearly considered at all stages of preparation and cooking. Elegantly served in an unpretentious environment - The Hamnavoe lets the food do the talking, backed up by professional and friendly staff. A unique place to eat and to which we will try to return.

Found this restaurant through TripAdvisor. Booked for our treat night out on a family holiday (i.e. no kids!). What a great find, just a few minutes walk from the pier, it has a very homely environment with an eclectic decor. Very warm welcome and good service from the staff. Menu was great mix of classic and unusual with local fare. I choose to stick local beer with a good range available.

The Hamnavoe is only open as a Restaurant from April to September and is not open on Mondays. You must pre-book by telephone as each of the 8 tables is only open for one sitting per evening, so you can stay as long as you like and enjoy the superb ambience, the tickling of your taste-buds, the wonderful oil paintings of Stromness by Ian MacInnes, and hand painted lampshades. The menu is not long, having a single page each for Starters, Mains, Desserts and Wines - plus a couple of Specials announced by our waitress, but there is plenty there to tempt you, even if you have allergies - for which it is advisable to tell the waitress before ordering. The music is very much in the background, pleasant and not obtrusive. The food is a delight and modestly priced.
