Halfway House Pub/Restaurant in South Derbyshire

We was made to feel really welcome and we ended up staying a few hours. It is a great country pub. A very busy place with plenty of character and a vibrant atmosphere.

On arrival we went into the garden saw the lovely play area and said to the children we will eat then you can join the others on there. Upon spending quite a lot of money in the restaurant we went outside to the staff drilling a piece of wood over the play area gate, children upset and an employee / owner saying something about Boris ? Very bizarre , we only picked this place as the outside was lovely. All the families there got up and left , three cars drove in and then off when they saw what was going on. I just found it all rather rude, they lost lots of custom that afternoon and we saw two other families down at another the pub , The Catchems, Swadlincote, where the children all played for hours on the play area. (No drills or booting kids off)An explanation would have been more appropriate or some reason not just drilling wood over the gate and upsetting the PAYING customers ! Will not be returning and it was talked about at the other pub , putting others off ! I found it very rude how they acted. Even after eating our food staff knew we were going to go to the area outside as we said we would order more drinks outside and even have pudding while making use of the play area , so it is confusing as to why they didn’t say oh it’s shut or don’t bother there’s someone drilling the gate shut with a piece of wood upsetting all the kids by kicking them off the play area !

We had afternoon tea here. It was probably the best we've had. The quality of each item of food was excellent. It was served in a sensible cardboard box, plastic cutlery in a sealed pack provided. Not just a few sandwiches but also scotch egg, sausage roll, ciabatta, all so different options. An excellent balance of savoury and sweet. We had vegetarian and vegan options too, a real mixed selection. Can't say enough. Thank you so much. The service was wonderful and Covid safety was clearly paramount.

Just had a take away three course dinner for two from The Halfway House, it was excellent, we had starters of garlic mushrooms and creamy vegetable soup, we both had slow roast pork belly as mains and apple crumble and chocolate cheesecake as desserts, all of it was piping hot and delicious, would certainly recommend The Halfway House to anyone, we have been for meals before the pandemic and the food is certainly up to the usual excellent standard.

Visited today as 2 couples and had delicious food in a carefully planned COVID safe environment. Even better was that we cashed in big time on the scratch card offer that covered half of our bill!Will definitely be making future visits as there are plenty more dishes for us to sample.Thanks to all at HH for doing a great job and delivering brilliant food and service.

We stopped here for a couple of drinks mid way on our walk today. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Food smelled amazing, we will definitely be returning to sample the delights of the kitchen.

The most welcoming pub you could go to! Great food especially the Sunday dinner. Friendly staff and locals. Feel really safe there in the current covid situation they also do takeaway meals. Dog friendly with a huge beer garden.

Six of us dined last night. All had the 2 courses for £10 specials. All main meals were lovely - faggots, fish & chips, steak pie & black n blue chicken. Homemade cheesecakes for dessert were superb - thank you Zara! The table service was excellent & we all felt very safe as tables well spaced out in the dining room. Well done Ashleigh, Zara & the halfway house team!

Due to covid restrictions there have been changes. Ash and Zara have worked hard to make things work at this difficult time. The food is still to a high standard and the cheesecakes are to die for.

Our first visit on recommendation, so impressed. Large portions of just delicious food cooked to order. The steak pie was amazing & the chips the best yet!Cheesecake was to die for, and all so reasonably priced. We will definitely return.

Three ladies for a catch up over a meal tonight. £10 for two courses and it was outstanding. Ashley was brilliant and all staff were professional and attentive. Can’t recommend enough.

It's National Pie Week soon and this place is a must visit for their pies. Beautifully made on the premises, I had Steak and Mushroom thus week but my favourite is Steak and Stilton. Celebrate National Pie Week by eating at the Halfway House, you won't be disappointed

Four of us turned up and asked for a table for 4 and were seated within seconds in the smallish restaurant.Good table service, good food (16oz steak was great) and good value. The only downside was the bar area that look a bit tired but very friendly.

Our weekly walking group was booked in for Tuesday lunch. The food and and welcome was fantastic. The food arrived piping hot and amazingly quick. Great value and we will be back.

This is a lovely.pub but for the 2nd time when we visited for a family get together we have waited a very long time to be served.Our table wasnt set up when we got there then set up with insufficient places. Staff kept apologising for our wait but with small children and having travelled for an hour and a half we considered buying crisps from the bar to keep us going.The food is lovely and nice and hot but the long wait to be served then waiting again for the table to be cleared we decided not to risk ordering desserts.If we hadnt booked and just turned up we would have understood it.

Probably one of the best meals i have had in a pub in years. Just moved into the area hadn't booked a table but it wasn't a problem, they were fully booked we only had to wait a short time before we were seated, this was one of the best pub meals i have had in years, exceeded my expectations by far, service was great complimentary prawn crackers with a selection of dips, great touch, hubby is vegetarian, there was so much choice for him, well presented tasty food, definately recommend but would almost book beforehand as it can get busy.

This is our local drinking pub, but haven’t eaten here in a good while. Dined here twice since Christmas & both times the food has been excellent. First time was the 2 courses for £11 January special. We did have to wait a while for our table, but the food was lovely & great value for money. Went again on Friday 31st January for the a la carte menu. This time our table was ready for us & service excellent. The starters & mains were cooked to perfection & very tasty. So disappointed we couldn’t fit in a pudding! Really like the fact you can order a smaller portion of a lot of the menu for the smaller eaters. Won’t leave it so long to eat here again! Highly recommended.

We have been to this delightful pub a couple of times for a meal. Such a nice little pub friendly and welcoming. We went 21/1/20 and had two main meals and two puddings for £11 now this was on special but wow what a bargain food was exellent really recommend. Dogs are also welcome here on a lead inside of bar.there is a large garden area to rear for summer time.so if you are out that way definitely visit great place for a pint and food.

11 of us local friends visited for a meal on a thursday evening. We are regulars at the pub but decided to have a post christmas meal. Great food, hearty portions and the usual laughs with the staff! Keep up the great work all!

Amazing welcome from staff and customers. Great 2 course menu ,the Mumbai chiken is fabulous .The Chicken in mushroom and wine sauce exquisite and the puddings should be illegal theyre that good .

We have been to this excellent restaurant on quite a number of occasions and have always found the food to be of excellent value with friendly and helpful service. This Saturday was no different other apart from having to book an early table so we were in for 6.00pm as that same table was required at 8.00pm.

Had a Christmas party night here and although we had a good time as a group the venue wasn’t that good. Firstly it was raining heavily and you have to go outside down a path for the 2 toilets that if someone is using queue in the rain. You also get wet when going to the hole in the wall bar. The whole marquee is on a downward slope so we were dancing downhill, sitting downhill and walking downhill to get food. The food was average, very plain and not one bit Christmassy, think at the very least a plate of mince pies would of been nice . Towards the end of the evening as tables of people left clearing up and stacking chairs began around us and then the minute the disco finished the hoover came out and we were told it had all finished. So all in all wouldn’t recommend and wouldn’t go again

Our Ladies Group have visited The Halfway House for our party for the last 6 years. We wouldn't go anywhere else. Delicious food, excellent price and great service and hospitality We look forward to it every year and have never had a complaint. Thanks again to all the staff

I intended to come here for an anniversary meal.

We booked a table here on a recommendation to celebrate my husband's retirement, it was on a friday night and was really busy. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the service very good. Our party had various meals from the menu and all said how good they were, I had steak which was really nice. I shall definitely return.

Went for lunch today unaware it was the Christmas menu it was fabulous excellent value for money Ashleigh and the staff were brilliant nothing is to much trouble Must say Claire is great so helpful

A pub which makes you feel at home, comfortable, friendly and warm. A menu with lovely food and a good selection of drinks. Dogs welcome and a lovely play area for children, something for everyone.

Lovely place, good atmosphere, fantastic food and service, nothing is too much trouble for them. We met up for a family get together to mark the 1st anniversary of my fathers death and they went above and beyond to meet our extra request in memory of my dad. Myself and my family members have been on other occasions and tried various different meals and all have been extremely delicious. A*** fantastic.

A table was booked for 6 adults and 3 children at lunchtime Saturday, 12 October. We had a fantastic meal. Each one chose a different meal and each one was cooked fresh and tasted excellent. Thank you chef and thank you to all who served us. Brilliant!

After years of searching for a great local food pub to us, we found this place. What a find. We eat out very regularly and no where in the area comes close to this place. The menu is excellent, the portion size is big and fantastic and the price isnt expensive at all. Great quality home cooked food .The chef is excellent. He comes out and interacts with the customers which you dont get very often. Nothing is to much trouble for him. The choice for children is excellent to. They get a smaller portion of the adult meals and its great quality. The homemade chips and fantastic huge homemade onion rings are fantastic. The plated sunday lunch is a must to. I love the fact they offer lamb. Very tasty. Starters are also a great portion size. We as a family have found the food and quality we have been looking for and will eat here regularly. The chef is brilliant snd friendly and we cant wait to try the rest of the menu.

This pub is a great place to eat food & service excellent and staff very friendly a great find and will definitely be revisiting. Can get busy if they have a function on but doesn’t affect the service or efficiency of the staff

Came here one evening for a nice family meal, I was a bit questionable as to what I would receive as a vegan! However, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the chef is vegan himself and would happily make me my own vegan banquet!! It was absolutely beautiful and everyone on the table was pretty jealous. I was so grateful for them taking such time to think of me and making sure my time there was just as special, so thank you so much, the food was beautiful and I recommend anyone to go, even the families food looked fab. I forget exactly what it was they made me, but off the top of my head one was a Thai green curry, a Moroccan stew or something like that and the other was vegetables in a sweet and sour sauce? Accompanied by chips, rice and salad. Caters so well for vegans and tasted beautiful. Thanks again

We've just had a fabulous 70th birthday bash here. Faultless venue, food and staff. Fully wheat and gluten free extravaganza. Delicious. A massive thank you to Ashleigh, Zara and the team. Would highly recommend.

Excellent service & ambience with food and portions to die for @ very good prices . A bonus of an excellent pint of marstons pedigree & one of our friends had a gin dessert sundae from which she was given a token glass due to the gin content

We held our wedding day at the half way house 29 to June 2019 .From the start to the finish ashleigh was brilliant with the helping organised our day nothing was too much trouble .The grounds of the marquee are superb very spacious and with having the beer garden and play area for the children was wonderful as the kids were happy too .we had a rodeo bull and a photo photo booth outside there was plenty off room .a lot of my guests comments were excellent venue and food was lovely and Ashleigh catered for everyone with a special diet requirement .the marquee was lovely as we could put our own touches to it and to be honest We was over whelmed when arrived to see the finished marquee and the beer garden .i would like to thank Ashleigh and Zara and all their sstaff who did amazing at our wedding and made our fiesta feel so relaxed well done to all of you .posted

We went with a friend for lunch today. The welcome was warm and inviting. The restaurant was small but quiet without loud music which was perfect. The service was prompt and professional. The food was of excellent quality and plentiful. I fully recommend this place and I will definitely be going back. First class.

I do enjoy a steak and I've had steaks all over the place but tonight I had the Steak Tornados at the Halfway House and it must have been one of the best ever! No need for a steak knife, the knife went through the steak as if it was butter. My wife had Chicken Sorrento, perfectly cooked in every way.

Quality of food was excellent with great personal service. Ideal for a special meal with someone. Not over big place but well worth a visit. Will use again forsure.

Just popped into the halfway house happy hour, 12 till four what a bonus £2.50 a pint and £2.00 for a fresh sandwich ,next time I'll do sunday lunch food looked fab.

A busy pub with lovely staff and a delightful menu. Wanted to try the home made faggots but sold out, waitress suggested to phone before next visit and they would keep a portion. Also can amend menus to suit your needs.

Always pop in here when visiting our friends. Staff and service great, food all freshly prepared and well presented, lots on offer but decided on the sirloin steak - cooked to perfection and the homemade cheesecakes on offer are to die for!

Travel 400 miles to visit friends over a Bank Holiday weekend and went to this gem of a pub. Don't be put off by the outside because the warm welcome inside compensates for the tired exterior. The staff are lead by a very competent head waiter/manager.The service was fast and the food excellent. We all had steaks that where cooked and served just how we had asked. The portions are generous but try and leave room for one of their in house desserts. I had the salted caramel cheesecake which was absolutely delicious. Wish we had such a good local in Devon. Thank you.

Our family of 21 ranging in age from 89 to 2 stayed at the nearby Grange house for the Easter holidays. We had Friday lunch and Saturday evening meals at the halfway house. The staff could not have been more welcoming or attentive. The food on both occasions was superb and with so many different meals to cater for the service was really good. Can not fault anything about our two visits.

have been here lots of times (I live locally) and the food is always fantastic, most recent visit had the black and blue chicken and it was fab, well kept beers and polite knowledgeable staff round off a fantastic pub!

We weren’t sure what it would be like from the outside - but we are so glad we went. Inside the atmosphere was friendly so we thought we’d give it a go. The barman made us feel especially welcome. It’s worth noting I have a strong lactose intolerance which makes eating out hard work at times and this was a spontaneous visit so we hadn’t been able to warn them. We got the menu and the barman got the chef, Zara to come out and talk to me. She couldn’t have been more helpful. Super competent and switched on. Very warm and unassuming. She clearly cared. Made us a delicious meal. Even managed to get me some lactose free cheese with my meal (that’s never happened when eating out before without it being vegan rubber cheese!). Wonderful!

I recently retired & chose The Halfway House for a celebratory family lunch ....have to say it was just lovely .The food was a delicious home cooked menu ,great value & excellent service from beginning to end .Friendly staff & lovely atmosphere ...nothing too much trouble .We all loved it & would definitely recommend . We dropped in for a meal on Weds 27th March after being let down by our booked restaurant. We headed here as had a memory of eating here several years earlier with my mother, and her friends.

Popped in on a Friday evening with some friends for a meal and a few pints Food was excellent, beer the same, waiting staff were courteous and food served promptly All in all a cracking evening Highly recommended

We visited today for the first time and were so impressed! The staff were so friendly and accommodating. We all had the Sunday roast with beef or lamb - which were brilliant. Empty plates all around! Great location and obviously extremely popular with the locals as it was very busy. We will definitely be coming back!

I recently organised a family party at The Grange, Donisthorpe, A large rentable house about 200 yds from the Halfway House pub. For dinner the first night I ordered a hot buffet from Ashleigh, the pub manager to be served at the Grange. I can only give the highest praise to Ash and his team, the food was excellent, plentiful and good value (there were 20 of us and we had enough over for lunch the following day) Ash and his assistant Ollie arrived with plates, glasses and cutlery even though this was all available in the Grange, they set a nice table and provided a 3 dish hot buffet and dessert. they then cleared up and left us enjoy ourselves, we didn't have to do a thing. A first class service which made our party so enjoyable. Well done! Steve

Had a great afternoon with the wife, lots of Real ales to sample and bar snacks were wonderful . Always love a village local pub. Great fresh food always served .

We had a really nice meal here. I had Bangers and Mash and my partner had Gammon, Egg, Salad and Chips. After a short break to let it go down we had Black Forest Trifle and Bread and Butter Pudding with custard. There was a selection of ales and the young bloke and his friend who served us were great, friendly and chatty. The pub was really busy and they handled professionally.

A lovely place to go with friends lovely menu lots of nice plain old traditional dishes with choices of what to have your main with such as chips or rice. Good selection of traditional desserts and very friendly staff

The food was excellent, good quality english food cooked and presented perfectly. The sweets were mouth watering! The sevice was good although there was a mix up between garden and mushy peas, but we forgave that due to the quality of the lunch. Slight disapointment as they had run out of the bread & butter pudding :-( 9.9/10!

I've eaten here many, many times and the food, drink and service has always been top notch. Lovely owners, staff and regulars. Can get busy at times but that's a sign of success! It's an absolute gem in the village and area in general.

Firstly apologies to Ashley and Zara/Sara for not leaving a positive review before now having eaten here several times in recent months. Along with most people though I am usually more likely to leave a negative review based on a bad experience so here is my positive review for this establishment.

Return visit to use a voucher. Service was good. Valentine’s menu so not full menu. Very good romantic atmosphere. Garlic starter mushrooms were very greasy, chicken was lovely. Had a steak for my main which was medium cooked. Chewy and tasteless needed seasoning, not the best cut so chef couldn’t help the piece of meat. Could have seasoned it, my partner had pepper sauce and really liked his. Partner had the lemon cheesecake for dessert which was gorgeous, wish I’d have had it as the chocolate brownie was nice but more of a fudge cake than brownie texture. Really nice champagne on arrival. Good pub food.

We went to the Chinese New Year banquet. The volume of food was amazing and all homemade. Starting with a sweetcorn soup, then fried tasters (prawns, spring rolls and enormous fish cakes), followed by Asian pork, sweet and sour chicken, fish in chilli sauce, beef curry, lamb with garlic, noodles and two types of rice, and then pineapple and banana in batter, honey drizzled and served with ice cream. Wow, even with a 15 year old lad as one of our party, there’s no way we could eat it all.

This place never disappoints, from the moment you walk through the door there is a warm friendly welcome from the staff and management who go out of their way to make you feel at home

We were looking for a pub to have a quick pint and warm up in after a disappointing day out at conkers. Turns out we’d stumbled upon an absolute gem. The staff and the local were extremely friendly and welcoming to us (4 adults 4kids). Great beer and service very comfortable bar area. We didn’t try the food but wish we’d have had time to, will definitely go back again.

Took our American visitor to experience a traditional English inn, an excellent choice. Lunchtime beef carvery with trimmings, good real ales, all expertly served by friendly helpful bar team. The main course was very tasty, good selection of veg, nice and hot. Decided on desserts, apple crumble and choc mint cheese cake - fabulous, pity our eyes were bigger than our stomachs!. Highly recommended . Thanks also for the souvenir, which will be prized back in the States.

My friends and our babies (3 adults 3 babies) spontaneously decided to pop in for lunch and we were so pleased with the service and food we received. The staff bent over backwards to accommodate us with the high chairs all set up for our arrival with only 20 minutes notice and they heated up the babies food and even bought it out in a little dish like their own little meal which I though was a lovely touch! The food we had was fab and clearly home cooked. There was good choice on the menu and all reasonably priced and all sounded delicious. We will definitely visit again. Very warm and welcoming although it doesn't look a lot from the outside I would normally have driven straight past but we saw the reviews and thought we would give it a go. So glad we did. Thanks for a lovely lunch!

We booked an early table for dinner on Saturday and no surprise to see the pub was busy as always and, as always our dining experience was second to none.

A big thanks to Ash and the team for making our birthday bash a night to remember! Always go the extra mile and they set up the marque and outside bar and burger van combo and it worked a treat.

Went for a Christmas dinner with family we won’t see at Christmas. Was expecting a Christmas menu, wasn’t even given it! Ordered the gourmet burger for myself and my little boy, it was awful, for at least the price I was expecting a decent meal but came out with a knife shoved through it and had the most awful texture and taste. Both of us couldn’t eat it, thought we could at least have the chips but as much as they looked like really good chunky chips they were hard and just not cooked through properly. My husband had the steak stack and even though I did not taste myself it looked awful! Decided to get desert for my little boy and to add insult to injury was charged 6.95 for 3 scoops of ice cream! Do not visit if you want a nice meal!

Just been to pensioners lunch with my mum at halfway house. The decor was lovely with great attention to detail. Entertainment from the local school children and young lad singing. The food was exceptional. Staff and service second to none. Well done Ash and Zara a winter wonderland. Thoroughly enjoyed it. And this was free to all pensioners. It was a credit to you and your staff. I am looking forward to coming again twice before christmas. We have a real jewel in the crown in Donisthorpe and a real community spirit

Step daughters, partners/boyfriends and I celebrated an early festive meal. Wow! 3 courses of superb food, little wine, soft drinks, attentive staff, hilarity with the balloons, great night. Highly recommended.

Been a few times now with friends and it’s always my choice when it’s my turn to pick the halfway as I can guarantee everyone will love it, the beer is incredible, best pint of Bass in the area, food is consistently amazing, delicious and well presented, I’ve lived in the area my whole life and the halfway right now is the best it’s ever been, well done to whoever makes it work so well.

This was my second visit to The Halfway House. It has a real pub atmosphere making it very welcoming with excellent customer service from the Bar Staff, especially Claire and Tom. They are both a credit to the business. We ordered food which was freshly made and delicious. It was so good to be in a real pub again and I would highly recommend a visit.

We were a group of 15 getting together for lunch. The pub was clean, cosy and warm and the staff were welcoming and friendly. We`d pre-ordered from the menu and although everyone chose something different, we were all served promptly and everything was delicious. good value for money. Large car park. Thanks so much.

A hidden jewel with a lovely atmosphere, will definitely be returning, with such a large family it can be hard to get everything right but The halfway house did it!

What a fabulous pub& restaurant. We discovered this pub on the second day of our weeks holiday, we pulled up at about 2.30 saw the chef outside and asked if they were still serving lunch he said we finished at 2o'clock but if we were quick he would serve us. What fabulous food and the staff were so friendly. The chef also turned out to be the landlord we thanked him for serving us and said we would be back again, he very kindly gave us both a gin glass and pens. We went back twice more before we came home. So people if you are looking for great food freshly cooked and reasonably priced with excellent staff would highly recommend.

Visited the halfway house in early September with very high expectations after reading the reviews. However, was very disappointed as the environment and cleanliness of the halfway house was awful. The glasses our drinks were given in were very dirty and looked like they have just been reused over and over again without them being washed.

Went to the Halfway House last night for a family celebration and whilst this place does have massive potential, it also needs to look at some of the basics.

This is my third visit here but the first since writing a review for TripAdvisor. For my wife and i it is in the top two restaurants to eat in the area. The food is superb. We both had starters. My wife had garlic mushrooms and I had Italian mushrooms both excellent starters. For our mains my wife had Chicken supreme and it is!!! I had fillet steak and the works and it was superb and tasty. The food is of generous portion size and very filling as we both couldn’t manage a dessert. When we go next time we will have a dessert instead of a starter. I would highly recommend The Halfway House. Do yourself a favour and book a meal here you won’t regret it.

Yet another excellent meal and drink. We moved over to south Derby from Staffordshire and we are lucky to find such a fantastic place. We chat to the staff now and have a good laugh with them.

Very slow poor service. Waited ages to be seated, they forgot the table decorations I had handed in on arrival. Had to ask for them once seated so ruined the surprise. Had to repeatedly ask for wine menu, soft drinks. Starters were wrong, waited over an hour for mains which were nice but at nearly 10pm we were passed it. When the bill came it was wrong. They corrected the starters but we were still charged for extras we didn’t have. All in all a bit of a shambles!

We ve just been to the halfway house in donisthorpe Swadlincote for a meal for a birthday. The staff were really nice and pleasant. The food was amazing. Give it a try everyone you won’t be disappointed. We will definitely be going again so glad we ve finally found a decent place to eat with lovely food and atmosphere.

We had another great meal at the Halfway House last Friday night, great food and service, the catch of the day was amazing , and guest beer too !
