I often pop in when shopping in Colchester. The shop thankfully never changes. Lovely cheese counter which I always head to. A proper old fashioned grocers with all the bits you can't buy in the run of the mill supermarkets. Staff lovely and friendly.

Despite living in Colchester for almost 25 years, this was my first time in this store, looking for coffee beans. A very wide selection served by pleasant and knowledgeable staff. It may have been my first visit but it will not be the last that's for sure, very happy to support this local business, it's everything the local deli should be.

Not a frequent shopper here, but when I want something delicious and a notch up from even Waitrose I go. Genuinely lovely staff who give service and opinion with civility and good humor. I go for the cheese, plenty from local producers, chocolate, sweet delicacies, and those things that someone who reads Larousse Gastronomique in the loo needs to buy. I also support it as a local small business with lovely French roasted coffee. Loong may it thrive.

We visit Gunton regularly because there is no better place to go if you are a fine and unusual cheese and coffee lover. This shop has been in Colchester for decades and hopefully will be for decades to come. The produce is high quality and the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The ladies who serve on the cheese and coffee counters are very helpful. Looking forward to our next visit

It is a privilege that this shop has still kept its door open in this small town ,in spite of competition from supermarkets with cheaper usual products. Full of wonderful delicious products, friendly service, cheese ,cakes, coffee ,biscuits . Only thing if ham ,cheese and food products are served with wearing gloves will be hygienic.

What a cute little shop! Im a regular here and love the variety of products they sell which you wouldnt get from the large supermarkets! Their Coffee at £1 is a steal as well as their feta cheese pastries! Love their local Tiptree Jam and Cakes! Cute Cafe upstairs but not suitable for my elderly mother. A lovely shop to visit if only to have a trip down memory lane :)

Lovely to see this speciality shop still thriving in the heart of the town. Known for its selections of specialties - everything from coffees to cheeses to jams and preserves. Always assured of being able to find that little treat that the big stores don't seem to stock these days, ensuring there will always be a place for this little gem! Little expensive but I guess that's because the fare isn't the usual run of the mill produce.

'Upstairs At Guntons' A lovely Tea Room, with a great selection of Tea and a varied range of Coffees from around the world. Plenty of light bites from biscuits to lovely cakes. Or do as I do, choose something from the Deli counter and say you are taking it upstairs to consume. Lovely! A warm welcome from Gill and the staff. This place is my weekly treat.

A visit made here on the spur of the moment! The delicatessen offers great provision so the cafe had to be the same? And yes it was! The drinks menu offered many types of coffee ( by cup or cafeteria ) and teas served without or with hot/cold milk! Also on offer were a selection of accompanying cakes and selected hot:/ cold light bites! Only ordered the house coffee which was delivered swiftly! Wow it was really good and hit the spot! With coffee this good I’ve definitely try the Jamaica blue mountain next! Looking forward to my next return!

When we lived in Colchester, years ago now, I often shopped in Guntons on my way to or from work. On a return visit the other week we made a beeline for Guntons and were thrilled to find it is just as good as ever. With the aroma of roasting coffee greeting you as you enter, this is an above-average deli with an extensive range of local specialities as well as imported goodies. They sell the most delicious home-cooked gammon, available freshly sliced, or pre-packed from the cool shelf – simply the best we have ever tasted. And if you like cheese you'll be spoilt for choice here as they probably have the widest range in the region including some that are hard to find anywhere else. Can’t comment about the café upstairs; I’ve never got further than to browse around the lovely food shop.

this is how retailing use to be, good old fashioned retailing at its best, friendly staff, and it serves good coffee roasted on site. It sells just about any foodstuffs that you can think of from items across the UK to more exotic items. The only downside is that the upstairs coffee shop doesn't make their own sandwiches which a real shame considering the type of place this is, the sandwiches come out of packet.

Downstairs is a feast for the eyes with a fabulous cheese counter and a top quality coffee selection. There is also a deli counter ,fresh bread and a gorgeous selection of unusual goodies. It's a joy to walk round. Upstairs is a quaint little coffee room with a choice of lovely coffee and tea.

I thought it was about time I reviewed the H. Gunton Coffee Shop again. They deserve more than 4 'Excellent' reviews so here is the fifth :-)They were one of the first coffee shops around to have a non-smoking section - one room was smoking, the other for non-smoking. We would sit in the latter in those early days - now, of course, we can sit in either room. The staff are very friendly indeed (downstairs in the shop also!) and there's a great selection of goodies to tempt your taste buds whilst you enjoy a cuppa ... including fresh-baked Danish Pastries :-)

We often used to go into Guntons for a coffee but then we moved closer to town and, we suppose, we felt we couldn’t justify calling in for a cuppa after that – being so close to home. We still called in for some provisions though – often choosing from the great cheese selection and the Gunton home-cooked hams etc from the deli counter. There is also a small selection of warm savouries as ‘take-away’ snacks now but there’s too much other great stock to list it here – just look on the shop’s website/online catalogue to see what I mean. On Christmas Eve, we ventured in to have a coffee once again and wished we hadn’t left it so long. The Coffee Rooms are upstairs, over the shop - the stairs are narrow and quite steep. It is still the cosy area we remembered – a lovely place to enjoy one of Gunton’s speciality coffees (over a dozen to choose from!); teas; or cold drinks. In case you fancy a nibble, you can choose from sandwiches; savories; cakes; and/or biscuits. The walls of the Coffee Rooms are available for people to ‘show’/sell their artwork – this makes for a unique experience because you never know what will be on display or sale each month. The shop floor maintains good old-fashioned quality & customer service and the same goes for the Coffee Rooms. The shop is welcomingly independent and has been run by the Gunton family for 77 years. It is said that things never stay the same but, reassuringly, Gunton’s does …. BUT with an up-to-date twist.

This is a quaint little shop that sells lots of things that you would not find in a supermarket or corner shop. They sell hot pastries, fresh cheeses and hot coffee to take away with your sandwiches. There is a lovely cafe upstairs but it is not accessible to people in wheelchairs or those who have mobility problems getting upstairs. I struggle! They sell packets of freshly ground coffee, baskets for hampers and lots of interesting goodies to put in them. Well worth a visit.
