Gurkha Restaurant in Teignbridge

Ordered for takeaway. Delivery was in good time and the driver was pleasant. Curry was bland and the chicken tasted nasty. Naan bread was nice and the rice is well rice. Bit disappointed that they didn’t give any free poppadoms like all other local restaurants do. Won’t be returning in a hurry.

Staying in town and wanting a night in we chose the Gurkha for a take away and were blown away by the food. Pre-ordered on-line and picked up the food which was ready on time and obviously freshly cooked. Good choice across varying family palates allowing sharing and mix and match options as well.

Had a takeaway last night , never had a bad meal but last night was really not good 😢 Partner had Everest chicken , that was it chicken and sauce couldn’t see any chilli’s , and didn’t taste of anything really …. I had chicken Tikka Masala not the same at all , different colour tasted more like a korma and had better chicken ! The rice was good ! Very disappointed ☹️

We come to Dawlish to golf same week for the last 5 years. Always had a good meal and good service. Tonight awful ! No where near the standard of previous years ! Popadoms soft ! Chutney out of a pot. Chicken pre cooked and uninteresting .

The food was ok, but the waiter was very rude and customer service was one of the worst, I strongly suggest not to go this restaurant because we came from a long way and then the waiter had a very bad attitude and couldn't even say sorry. And was being so rude.

This was the worst restaurant in the whole Dalwish. The customer service was one of the worst that we have ever experienced, only one waiter was serving and he had so much of an attitude like he owned the restaurant. Strongly suggest the owner of this restaurant to fire him if he wants to keep this business going well.

A worst experience I have ever had😕 gone with the family for the dinner but the person is alone who took order & served us with very rude attitude feeling like he was giving food us free of charge owner has to look into this business personally otherwise this staff ruin this business, please don’t go there.

Excellent meal. Portion sizes were just right and the price was reasonable. All good quality dishes. Service maybe a little on the slow side but still worth the wait for the freshness and quality that arrives to the table. Nice atmosphere in the restaurant which is definitely popular as it filled up as the night went on.

The king prawn curry Too much sauce for how rich it is However tasty thick coconutty and creamy The king prawns cooked perfectly The pashwari chicken curry It is sweet not overwhelming but could tone it down Chicken just a tad dry The jackfruit curry was great it was juicy and tender Friendly people Great service Family friendly As an Englishmen who likes curry maybe the currys were a bit tame. The cauliflower dish don't know what it was called, a side, great flavour and cooked perfectly The Nan and paratha standard

If you want a taste of Nepalese or spiced flavoured food avoid this place at all cost. We got a takeaway costing £85. And it was tasteless and unappetising. Would rather travel the short distance to teignmouth.

We had a takeaway. It was literally inedible. I don’t think I’ve ever had such a bad takeaway. The chef’s chicken tikka masala was not cheap either. Even the rice was horrible.

We drove over 30 minutes to try the food at Gurkha based on positive reviews. I wish we really had not bothered and this was the worst meal and service we have ever had and would give it zero if there was an option to. As we confirmed about gluten free options at the time of booking so we expected a good selection. I believe it was the owner that took our order and his son was behind the bar. I asked why the popadoms were not showing as gluten free as they are made out of gram or corn flour and he said that he didn't know which was a concern because he made out that he didn't understand. However he was fluent in english and confidently said the chips were gluten free but a minute ago he didn't understand what Gluten Free Was ?? So we decided to just order a main course each. Over 30 minutes passed and no food but a table of 5 that arrived way after us were getting their food. My husband asked how much longer our food was going to be and was told the larger table was being served before us. He again played a select understanding game. Another 10 minutes passes and the table of 3 next to us were served with starters. My husband approached again and was told it was only starters !! So we told them that we need to leave and was going to pay for our drinks and leave. We finally received our food an hour and half after ordering with no apology and it was awful. I am indian myself so I know what a good or bad curry is. They were both very bland and had no salt or spices in them. My husband approached the owners son to pay and there was not a single apology from him or his dad all evening. His dad approached to clear our table & he didn't ask me why both curries were hardly touched or did we not want to take it home with us. It would have been nice to be asked so we could explain why discreetly without causing a scene. There was nothing humble or honest about the owner as we listened to him being rude and aggressive to another table of 2 blaming them for an error in their order with no apology. I strongly advise people to avoid this place at all costs and I don't believe any of the positive reviews are genuine and they are there to draw customers like us in.

It was a home delivery.. I found the food under par for the price charged. The portions were slight, and meat quite light. I would not order from there again.. For 2 people the meal cost over 60 quid and was not a meal I would want to repeat

A hidden gem if looking for a curry in Dawlish. We had a takeaway which was packed with flavour and plenty of it

OMG THE SIZE. NEW PICTURE. (New picture of Chicken Jalfraz and Pepper only) As you can see loads more Good for large party's and Take Aways. (All the time, 16 years now. boy the time just goes by. ha ha). Great food again always. And I always ask them to make my Aloo Gobi in the style of my hot meal which ever version am having. Nice touch. They made my two tonight (Madras style) but cut the potatoes and cauliflower smaller added gravy and the spices. OMG. IT CHANGED THEM 100%. So much so my friends wanted to try them more. Lucky I got two. Which they are happy to do. 😃

Worst Nepalese I have ever had, watery and very little meat or fish. So very disappointing. Won’t be back. How you have goodish reviews, I’ll never know.

Really nice restaurant with friendly staff, excellent food and nice and clean. We’d definitely recommend for anyone looking for decent curry.

Always love a trip to the Gurkha in Dawlish. This visit didn't disappoint with tasty freshly prepared food, lovely family friendly atmosphere and great service. We particularly enjoyed the fresh naan bread and the goat curry. Wide range of different dishes, rice and sides. I found the paratha a little heavy and oiler than expected but otherwise all the dishes were excellent, meat was tender and dishes of lentils and cheese and spinach were perfect.

Will definitely go there again, my birthday last week great food great service, thank you very much

Wow wow wow !!! Firstly we would like to say how amazing the staff an the food are in this restaurant! From the moment we walked in we felt so welcomed . Two of us were celebrating our birthdays an the staff had put up a lovely banner an balloons so nice of them x Oh an then the food the most delicious food we had all had the goat was so good yum yum ! We had one of the best night here an went home feeling full an look after .A very big thankyou to you all an we will be back next year that's a promise !! Thankyou x

Over the years when I'm in Dawlish or Exeter I invariably have a takeaway from the Gurkha Restaurant. They are always of a high standard and never disappoint. The food is cooked well and is extremely tasty. I would recommend the Gurkha to anyone.

Camping in Dawlish and decided to treat ourselves one night. This was recommended and I have to say the service, food , portions were all excellent. If you asked me if value for money, I’m not so sure as it is very expensive and I have had just as good an experience elsewhere for a lot less. However, if you are away in a new location for first time and it is quaility you are after- I would have no concerns recommending this restaurant.

We have had takeaway from the Gurkha 3 or 4 times. We started to order from them as the standards had dropped at our old Indian in Teignmouth. We have ordered an array of different dishes from really spicy to very mild. We have tried many of their sides starters and naans. The food has always been top notch, and delivery prompt and on time. Only remembered to write this review as I have just placed another order for delivery this evening. Highly recommend

Delicious meal from Gurkha tonight, delivered piping hot by polite and friendly driver. Particularly good chicken shaslick and garlic chilli mixed vegetables which will be our new favourite.

Just had a lovely Lamb bhuna and Paratha bread from Gurkha Restaurant, delivered to campsite reception, very good service and lovely food. Six of us had different food and everyone enjoyed their meal.

Had a delivery while on holiday in Dawlish Warren. Food was average, nothing special, food was hot, nothing different from other curry takeaways I’ve had before.

So pleased i tried this restaurant, fantastic food delivered piping hot to my house. The three of us all hsd different meals and they we're all cooked to perfection. Thank you we will be using your restaurant more often.

We went in a family group, including 2 vegans and a 1 year old. The vegans were impressed with the range of dishes and really enjoyed their food. Our meaty dishes were also very good. Service was excellent, both prompt and attentive. A highchair was provided for the baby. The atmosphere was very relaxing. The restaurant was busy, but conversation was not intrusive. Finally, I can't actually remember if there was any background music so if there was it didn't make an impact

We had a delicious meal at this restaurant and it was made even better by our lovely waiter Sanjeet. He was so friendly and helpful with ordering. We both had delicious curries and shared a starter. The chicken was so tender it fell apart and the sauces were gorgeous. We were even more fortunate that we happened to eat there on carnival night which was a lovely surprise. When the floats started coming past the window we asked to go outside and watch the procession. They were happy for us to go outside and watch and trust that we would return to pay our bill. Such a lovely atmosphere and we would definitely return. Thank you Sanjeet and the team!

A lovely experience and staff, very attentive and actually seem really happy to have you in the restaurant. The food was excellent, tasty and looked appetising. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and we will return.

We had a delivery on Saturday night 5th of August, a chicken Bhuna & chicken tikka massala, I do not usually complain but this is the worst curry that I have had from the Gurkha, we have takeaways on average every month or so from this place. The bhuna was very bland & no taste to it & although the tikka masala had a nice sauce, the chicken was very rubbery! Maybe a one off & may have a new chef, but will think again before ordering from the Gurkha!

Always quiet, but we usually go in midweek when it it quiet, food is good and the staff are very friendly and welcoming.

Everything was excellent about this restaurant apart from 1 thing. No desserts. Not even an ice cream.

Just had a takeaway here, the food was amazing definitely the best indian food we have had! Arrived on time and still piping hot as well, very impressed, will definitely be returning!

Average food but seemed expensive for what we had.

Staff were polite and courteous. Restaurant was clean, tidy and well lit. Had a chicken tikka masala many times with no issues. This last one tasted bland. Chicken was oddly chewy, almost gristle like texture. For that I drop 1 star.

Good food and service worth a go if you like curries etc

Ordered a takeaway as my hubby had been a while ago and said how nice it was. I can't really say anything bad about the food the flavour of the curries was lovely but paid £6.50 for a starter that was a tiny samosa, 1 small cube of lamb, 1 small cube of chicken and a small sheek kebab, the description stated meatballs and there was none of them so very over priced for what you get

The only Indian you can get in dawlish. They have the monopoly. I have to say it's not bad at all. Portions are very good and a good choice on the menu, especially for vegetarians. The restaurant could do with a makeover and bring it up-to-date to modern standards. That is only the décor as it is still very clean. Took a big portion home with us.

Wonderful food, friendly service

An absolutely wonderful experience both dining in and taking out.

The food was nice, but the service not good, the lady wasn't English so couldn't understand us very well and we waited 45 mins for our meal which was unacceptable, I've never waited anywhere that long I was about to say something but I didn't want to ruin the evening with my family whilst on holiday, it wasn't as though the place was busy either.

We always have a great meal here. Food is amazing. Staff really helpful and friendly

Absolutely superb food and excellent service

I came in for a meal few weeks ago, as a table of 8 the restaurant was exceptionally busy and food took a while to come however we were compensated with two free bottles of wine. Was served by lovely young man and was shocked to find out he was only 17 as he acts a lot older when the food arrived it was absolutely amazing and well worth the wait but did find the other young man think he had ginger hair quite rude and blunt with no manners. he was stood at the bar on his phone most of the time while the other young man was running around.Did mention this but he didn’t seem too bothered. Overall a fantastic night glad the one with ginger hair didn’t serve us all night as he went home and the other young chap kept running around with excellent service. Don’t want this new young man to reflect the business as every time i have been it’s been wonderful!! Will be returning in the festive period 🤩

Quite meal out mid week. Really nice food and very good service. Recommended if you are the area. Well worth the walk from the Warren too. Plenty of choice and haply to box up any you couldn't manage.

The staff are friendly and attentive and the food is wonderful. I mentioned, when booking, that it was for my husband's birthday. My husband was presented with a birthday cake and candles (with balloons and a banner on the wall by our table) which we were not expecting so a lovely touch. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Tandoori chicken was not marinated and very dry. Husbands sag baghi was greasy and his phall wasn't even mild hot. Total disaster and would bit eat there again

Got of to a bad start when twice I sent emails to book a table and requested confirmation but never got a reply, does annoy me that. No Nepalese beers available which I always find surprising and the food, my Everest Lamb Curry supposedly hot was mild. We didn’t leave anything but the food was unassuming. Can’t fault the staff, very polite and helpful. We ordered lamb momo to takeaway and this is why the rating is low. If we had order them in the restaurant they would have been sent back. Only two were edible, the rest were so hard one could snap them in half, more like samosas and very little filling and at £5.95 a pop. I know times are difficult in the hospitality business but restaurants need to up their game or diners won’t return.

We called up last minute on a Saturday and managed to get a table. I had driven past many times and wondered what it would be like. Don’t be fooled by the fairly humble appearance of this place, the food was lovely, the front of house staff were attentive, friendly and engaging. Our 2 children also enjoyed the food and the staff were very kind to them too and gave them lollies at the end and hot towels to try. I had the best chicken curry I have ever had in there so well done to the chef too. Brilliant evening. Thank you.

Curry was very runny and the meat over cooked, but as the rice was quite dry it, it sort of balanced out! Paratas were absolutely soaked in oil! Far too greasy to really enjoy. At £55 for 3 people there's better Indian food elsewhere in the area!

Not sure where is the best start with this place but we found 2 hairs in our curry, the cheese nan was just a bag of grated cheese with some hard bread. The curry wow wouldn’t even give it that name. I’ve had better bowls of soup. Next visit down here I’ll be staying WELL AWAY

We happened across the restaurant and it looked quite standard in terms of decor, however after talming to the staff and being seated it was clear that service was going to be good and the staff were both polite and efficient. That was the start of a treat, we had Nepalese dishes including prawn, vhicken and Goat, the Sag Alhoo was fantastic as were each if the dishes. Nothing was oily or greasy but instead tasty and delicious... Well done, 5 out of 5 stars from me.

Very Bland tasting Chicken Madras...... Only popped in 6pm to order takeaway... Nobody in as still early but lady serving me was more interested in the people coming thru the door then got my ticket mixed up. Concentrate on what you're doing. Anyhow very Bland and tasteless meal even the bits that come with the poppadoms were tasteless. Sag Aloo, defo Sag. Not impressed. Is there an Indian Chef.... ? Oh well tried again a year later..... Still bland. Nepalanese.... Nepal very close to Tibet possibly more like Tibetan food. No taste. Just bland, rice was good and Stuffed Nann, But that's not difficult.
