We wandering in here after a walk through Altrincham. Even as new customers we were eagerly attended to and seated quickly. The food was lovely and not overpriced. Diya the server was really helpful and polite. The general atmosphere was friendly even from other customers as a chat about football took place. We would definitely go again.

Unfortunately ordered a take away from here as our local Chinese was closed, what a mistake! The food was awful and 90% of it ended up in the bin. I wish I had returned it and asked for a refund.

My husband and I eat here early last night. Wow, amazing food and attentive service. Restaurant was quiet as we dined early but they were busy with takeaway orders. We have the set menu for 2. Plenty of food with great quality and flavours. Best Chinese we’ve had in a long while. We will be back.

We went as a party of 8 and couldn't have been looked after any better. Ivy was so patient and helpful. The food is amazing especially the crispy duck.

The Service was 10/10 The food was 10/10 Atmosphere 10/10 The only thing that really irritated me was the STRONG smell of cigarettes for the duration of our visit. It’s like they allowed someone to smoke right inside the restaurant and it was the most disgusting smell. Ruined our Father’s Day Meal. But the food!!! Timely, Hot and delicious!!!!

I was really praying that this would be my local dim sum hangout, but sadly not. The food “looked great” but alas it did not play its part. Was really disappointed, only close to authentic dish was the deep fried shrimp wonton. The staff were very friendly and very clean environment.

Dreadful. Quality of the duck and chicken was just awful, like plastic, duck mushy and no taste. I think I enjoyed the free prawn crackers more than the meal. We ordered duck with pancakes and the special assorted starter and a prawn dish. Will not be returning, just dreadful,

Visited Gonbay Altrincham for my husband’s birthday lunch and it was also my 9 year old sons first Chinese food experience. We had a mixture of duck and vegetable spring rolls, ribs, seaweed, to start then chicken fried rice, si chuan chicken and chicken with ginger and spring onions, (and a portion of chips as back up for my son)! The food was excellent, flavoursome, piping hot and tasty. My son tried every dish, even used chopsticks for the most part, and only touched his chips after he’d finished his Chinese food. The service was also brilliant. Attentive but not overbearing. We had the set lunch menus and, even with the 10% service charge included, which is clearly noted on the website, it was definitely good value for money. All three of us can’t wait to return.

The Best Chinese restaurant in Altrincham

Had a fabulous meal in this friendly restaurant. Will definitely return.

If it's a Chinese dish, it's good, but the only dissatisfaction is the Milk King Bun. Both times it was called Milk King Bun, but it was really not delicious. Maybe it was ordered at night, so it was super stale. But except for the Custard Bun, everything else is pretty good. Now you can have delicious Chinese food without leaving the city center.

Expensive and not the best Cantonese.

The food is exceptional!! One of the best Chinese restaurants I’ve been to in a long time - we especially loved the satay, salt and pepper aubergine and shredded chilli chicken. We’ll be coming back again. Also the owners and staff are incredibly friendly and kind.

Refusing to refund for the items that were missing from the order.

I will say I have been to this place at least once every year for Chinese new year. However I went today and wow was I disappointed. We went at 20 to 7 and received our first starter at half 8. Many people were complaining about food taking far too long and yet they were still letting in more people. They were okay to remove the service charge but overall from a place I love severely let down. I hope this was a one off poor day for the team and staff as I do truly enjoy this place but this was a sad let down.

I came with my boyfriend last night and to say I’m disappointed is an understatement. Our ticket was lost so they had to take our order again. The food took far too long to arrive that we asked for our food to be boxed up because we couldn’t wait any longer. They kept letting people in despite how chaotic and busy it was, there wasn’t a single person who didn’t complain about the wait times and stuff. However, I do appreciate the staff were doing the best they could in the situation they were in. Although we did not have a good experience, the food was good and it was definitely worth the money. I have heard a lot of good things about the restaurant from friends and people around me so to see it not matching up to my expectations is an utter shame! 🥺

I recently won a competition for a free meal at Gonbay. I remember this place from years ago and how good it was. We visited on Saturday night and was pleased to say it hasn’t changed a bit! The staff were outstanding and so welcoming. The speed of the food to the table was exactly how I like it. Enough time between each course and not waiting forever. The food was fantastic. Chicken skewers in satay sauce and honey spare ribs to start, followed by sweet and sour chicken , chicken foo yung, egg fried rice and salt and pepper chips for mains. All had a great taste and flavour and we were well and truly stuffed at the end! Thank you all so much and we will certainly be back very soon!

Ordered off the set meal menu. Starters were OK, but the rest was sadly just average. Chips were stale and burnt as were my salt and pepper chicken balls....basically chicken nuggets. So disappointed 😞 Worst part was being charged an extra £10 to pay by card, never ever experienced this before! This was excluding the service charge! At no point either during the evening or on the website was this pointed out or we would have taken cash! The reason given was unclear!

Ordered takeaway of prawn toast, paper wrapped prawns and Singapore vermicelli. Delicious, hot, great flavours and super quick and slick service. Highly recommended and will return next time in Altrincham!

Stand out service from the staff, so welcoming and happy to split the bills into smaller groups for our party celebrating a family 40th. Portion sizes very good and food very tasty. It is a little bit more expensive than I would usually pay for a meal out, but it was a special occassion birthday for a family member so definitely worth it for a treat. They also made a special dessert with sparkly candle and birthday song for the birthday boy which was lovely! Thank you for a lovely meal out!

Chow mein is fair but dim sum is dry and weird taste. The boss keep blaming the staffs in front of all the customers, which is so annoying and noisy.

one of the best meals i’ve had. the staff were enthusiastic and very respectful towards me. one by the name of geordan kept coming over to make sure everything was alright with my meal, will definitely be recommending to all of my friends.

So disappointing. The green curry was purple and I think grapes were in it. It was totally inedible and a waste of £10-12. Will never eat here again. Avoid.

We used to go here loads a year or two ago and the food was gorgeous! Such lovely food and really friendly staff. However we went last night and it was AWFUL. Nothing with the food tasted the same and it honestly tasted horrible. We have had stomach pains all night too from it. We can’t believe how awful it was! We will not be back!

Haven’t visited Gonbay for many years since Ming’s departure and was excited to give it a try again as we’re really missing a good Cantonese restaurant in Hale & Altrincham. To say we were underwhelmed with the food would be generous. The prawn won tun soup was the saving grace at being slightly above average, but the beef in the fillet steak satay was hardly chewable with a very strange aftertaste, the steamed dim sum were average at best as was the crispy seaweed and crispy beef fillet rolls. Sea bass OK and mixed vegetables and sweet & sour chicken were OK too. The carpet at least has changed, but not much else I’m afraid. Staff all lovely and I hate leaving negative reviews, but can’t think of much else good to say.

Been here for two consecutive Sunday. Staff are friendly and quite attentive. Some are native Cantonese or mandarin speakers. A great variety of food choices, but most of the food we ordered were very heavily seasoned. In our first visit, the half portion peking duck was charged twice and I spotted when checking the bill. The staff immediately amended it. Found a piece of plastic thing with sharp point in the beef brisket pot in our second visit. Made the staff aware. Perhaps I’m not lucky but will not be visiting again in the near future because of this. Two very young kids both below six were also charged for tea per head count which they didn’t drink any. Very accessible. Located in the centre of Altrincham. Just five minutes walk from the metro station if you don’t drive. Street parking available opposite to the restaurant. Charges apply on normal day but free on Sunday evening.

My wife and I had the misfortune to visit Gonbay in Altrincham last night. It was fairly quiet in there with a couple of tables of around 10 and 6 people, who were well into their service. Our order was taken fairly quickly and our starters arrived within a reasonable time. It took around 15 mins after we’d finished our starters for them to be cleared away, and a further 20 minutes passed with no sign of our main courses. We asked a couple of members of staff if they could chase up our main courses, with neither looking as if they knew what to do. One of them said the delay was because they had a couple of large tables to deal with, so we waited a further 10 minutes and again asked how long our food would be, and were vaguely told maybe 5 or 10 more minutes. It was at this stage that we decided that having arrived almost an hour earlier, and having been given no clear idea as to when we may receive our main courses, that we weren’t prepared to wait any longer and decided to leave. We went to the till to pay for our starters and a couple of drinks. While we were waiting to pay and expressing our disappointment with the service, one of the staff that came to the till became rude and argumentative, and basically called my wife a liar with regards to the time we’d had to wait. While my wife was putting her straight, I was given the bill by another member of staff which had service charge added! Obviously I refused to pay any service charge as it had been so appalling, and that was duly removed. The waitress was constantly answering my wife back and it appeared had never been trained in any way with regards to dealing with paying customers, and continued to be rude. Four generations of our extended family have been customers of Gonbay over many years, and whilst the standard has slipped over the last couple of years, the food and service have been acceptable, however last night was so poor –the staff seemed disinterested, behaved amateurishly, and were clueless as to what was going on - there was a complete lack of communication with the customers, and to top it all, a waitress was arguing with us and calling my wife a liar. If a restaurant is incapable of catering for more than two tables at any one time without other diners having to wait an unacceptable amount of time to be served, then it shouldn’t be in business, or otherwise maybe just take bookings for two tables at any one time? We will never be returning to Gonbay, and would advise anyone reading this to stay well away.

Overall food was amazing however the prawn toast unfortunately not so hence 4* for quality, for me the bread was way to thick which is why it was quite soggy when you bite into it but apart from that food was excellent

I’ve just tried some dishes from this restaurant tonight. I was impressed by the steak Canton! (Love onion). Didn’t get a five star because it’s not the best prawn toast I’ve had. But overall it’s good.

A wonderful birthday dinner. Food, service and ambiance exceptional. Mae and her colleague made it memorable providing complimentary fresh fruit platter and birthday cake with candle for the birthday girl - highly recommended.

Quiet on a Sunday night in January but dealt with one of our parties dietary requirements excellently. Food was very nice, great portions and ambiance excellent. Trainee waitress well supported by other staff which was nice to see. Recommended

Terrible 3rd time ordered snd I’m disgusted I didn’t get king prawn I got sweet sour liquid and rice and burnt ribs! To which I called and they said basically not there problem I have to pay more Never again I will be going back to give them there food on the reception desk

First time I have ordered from this restaurant and I was very disappointed. The price they charge for the quality of food is awful. I have never actually had a Chinese this bad.

Lovely food and excellent service by the great staff here BUT … absolutely appalling that the ‘10% surcharge’ on the bill (when you pay by credit card) does NOT go to the staff - apparently the staff aren’t allowed to accept tips … so why does the boss accept 10% extra on the bill?

Went this evening for the first time really wished we truly hadn't bothered .staff were polite then a table came in wirh six business men who were based in China that was it all attention was on them. Our drinks came and then we ordered starters came they were OK.then we waited and waited and waited excuses came they were busy with the big table and take a ways and delivery's. So we waited the warm plates were now stone cold..then our food arrived I had the duck in lemon sauce with fried rice hubby had chicken in satay sauce boil rice it was awful the duck was chewy and uneatable rice was shocking. Also uneatable We stood up and put our coats on they asked was there a problem we told them yes .then came the excuses we were not offered any refund for our food shocking. We were not the only table to leave because they had waited to long.give it abig miss.

But pricier than the usual restaurants but worth every penny for the food, atmosphere and service.

Terrible! My husband has just picked up our order and it’s the worst meal I’ve ever had! The egg fried rice is rock hard and dry so dry I thought the egg was fried onions, the salt and pepper king prawns taste like plastic because of the container or what ever it was cooked it, I didn’t even eat one! The dim sum were not cooked, what a waste of money and all we’ve eaten is the prawn crackers and we are still hungry! Don’t go!

Really bad food, we ordered the vegan duck as usual, but this time it was something totally different the salad was horrible as you can see the the picture. when we call them back for an explanation they took long time tried to convinced us that the food is ok and they change the supplier etc that is way the food is deferent. I still got your food in my kitchen. due to a first day of the year, I am not sure if the restaurant is open for day I want to take it back to your restaurant and show you and get refund my money, this wasnt I order for. even my dog won't eat that food, can you explain to us why you did not refund our money?

We had a fantastic New Year's Eve meal! We were a family of 7 with young children and were made to feel so welcome from start to finish! The staff couldn't do enough for us! The food was amazing as usual.Thank you to all the staff!

Duck was decent but s&s chicken was average. Ribs very greasy and some of the prawn toast really tough, must’ve been old.

My family and I visited Gonbay recently and we received a warm and very hospitable welcome. Ken, the manager, was first class and guided us through the menu expertly. The food did not disappoint and the dim sum was exceptional. All the staff are lovely and helpful, they went over and above to make our dinner fabulous. We will be back and look forward to another first class dining experience very soon.

Wow the Christmas venue and service was amazing. I also forgot my samumng buds there and when my friend went back they had found them and saved them. You must go.

Early 3 course meal was terrific and the staff were helpful, happy and just lovely. I enjoyed my experience after having the let down of having to wait 25 hours to go on my Holiday to Tenerife because of a Volcano cloud over the airport. Gonbay saved my day. I was smiling again.

Nice food, nice atmosphere and nice service. Shame they gave me the bill and had already added a service charge of 10%. It's not welcome...I decide whether they get a service charge and how much. Otherwise nice place.
