Golden Taste in Sheffield

Went to this place because I've never had real Chinese food before (just the standard English version) and this place did not disappoint. Tried the lamb with cumin, shrimp, squid in dry hot pot. It was all delicious and generous sized portions too. I want to try more real Chinese now as it's so different to what I've eaten before. My favourite was the squid in dry hot pot 😋. Just be careful to order from the actual Chinese menu because when we asked for some dishes we were told we wouldn't like it and pointed towards the English menu. We had to persuade the staff that we wanted to try actual Chinese food 🤣 the lady serving was lovely though.

Very nice, flavoursome food. Particularly liked the spicy vegetable hot pot and the sauteed crab in hot spicy sauce. The servers were very helpful and I really loved the Chinese decorations. However the green onion pancakes were a little too soggy in my opinion. Overall had a great experience here and would definitely recommend.

What a disaster booked for 5 people for my son’s 15th birthday he asked to sample and try traditional Chinese hot pot. We arrived they forgot we had booked had only a small table and we waited 1 hour 30 minutes until the round table was available only to be told we couldn’t have hot pot but everyone around us had hotpot !!! Glasses had damage food was not what we expected… cost £100 contrary to other reviews we will not be back totally ruined my sons special night

We ordered takeaway in store to collect. There was an option to sit and eat in, but as our son hadn't come with us we opted to take ours home. There was a sign in the restaurant saying "cash only" which wasn't an issue as we had cash, but we don't usually carry cash so this isn't the best. When we got home the food was still hot. The portion of prawn crackers was tiny, barely enough for one person. We'd ordered special fried rice but were given plain egg fried rice, which was far too sticky. The chilli shredded beef was bland and tasteless and the beef in blackbean sauce was mainly just a portion of peppers (which I don't like). On the plus side, our son really enjoyed the beef noodles and the food was ready to collect very quickly.

Excellent place for a dinner. Very good quality of food for very good value. We had the hot pot which was amazing and was very filling. Everything was perfect and family loved it. They only took cash but the waitress was kind enough to offer to do bank transfer.

First time here and I’m very surprised that the hotpot is so good and there are many options to choose from. The crab is big and tasty. Soup base are authentic without artificial ingredients. The service is good and no time pressure. I’d highly recommend people to try it out. I’ll definitely come back again.

Had such a great meal here. It is family owned and they are so friendly. We had hot pot and were talked through the menu. There are two vegetable broths and a good amount of vegan options. The woman who was serving us made (on our request) our dipping sauce for us. Everything was so good. It feels very informal, like you are being welcomed into someone's home. I will definitely be bringing people back here.

What a find. This has to be the most authentic “normal” Chinese restaurant Ive been in since “food street” with the builders and service staff in Shenzhen when Shenzhen was being redeveloped into a mega city in the 90s. If you want to try authentic Chinese food away from the highly developed westernised menu, then this is your place.

The highly restaurant came highly recommended in a local FB community group. The restaurant is quite shabby. The food is not inviting. The presentation is lacks finesse. Ive lived in parts of China and the restaurants serve the most amazingly garnished dishes. The only nice thing here was the coke. The chowmein was decent. Extremely disappointed with the prawn toast and crispy diced chicken both bordered on burnt. The beef chilli was at least edible but unfortunately extremely salty. Couldn’t eat. We were 4 people and literally we left the served plates full. Oily and too salty. The Condiments are kept on a different table. No idea what they were. The bill invoice was in chinese.. I mean I understand being authentic but I would at least like the bill in English. The female staff was friendly and helpful in choosing food. I did mention the issues with the food but the restaurant really wasn’t concerned by it. All in all I will never visit this place again as it didn’t have a single redeemable feature. I wish I had taken pictures. Lastly it’s too overpriced for the quality of food. I wish them well and hope they take this honest feedback to improve themselves

If I could put no stars I would. The restaurant was untidy and dirty, there was only one waitress who didn't take her coat off the whole time so it wasn't apparent that she worked there, she was constantly on her phone watching a loud programme in Chinese while she served us and "cleaned" tables (wiped them over with a bit of tissue while watching the programme. A dirty old box of tissues was put on our table for us to use instead of napkins. The table next to us had dirty half left bowls of soup left on it and had a filthy piece of old napkin stuffed below the glass which topped the table. The food didn't look appetizing and tasted awful we left most of it.

I'll never visit here again. When we enter the restaurant, they said it's fine to pay by card. However, when paying, they asked us to go to the post office to withdraw cash. The vegetables are sour and stinky.

The best Chinese in Sheffield. 100% kill it everytime. Haven't had a thing from here that wasn't delicious. Apart from that time the chef tried to murder me.

Reliably delicious food, not just the usual Cantonese food too.

Went here as a family group of 4 on a Saturday afternoon. It is only small - 6 tables I think. The staff serving did not have good English, so communication was a little difficult at times. However they were genuinely friendly, you just might misinterpret some of the exclamations as rude if you didn't understand the situation and culture. They have plasticised menus with pictures so you have translations of the dishes from Chinese and you mark them up with a dry wipe marker. This was slightly problematic, as one of our dishes was missed, and drinks took a mighty long time, but worth persevering with. The food itself was really tasty especially the genuine Chinese food (so not the usual bland sweet and sour chicken balls), instead the hotpots, chicken with chilli, mixed seafood pot. Also the fried dumplings were great. Note the chicken will come chopped with the bones in it, so if this is not your style it may not suit you. Having said stick to the Chinese stuff, their take on chips was really thinly sliced potatoes with chilli and peppers and was really good - a guilty pleasure! Looking at menus online, they are different from what you get in the restaurant - the online one is kind of shoved in the back of big menu, so I would say eat out - the takeaway looks really ordinary by comparison. (but I could be wrong here) They served our juice as a complete jug, so that was a nice relaxed approach. Also beware as they were cash only, so had to nip out to the ATM to be able to pay. Overall I really enjoyed it. The atmosphere, slightly chaotic approach, and most of all taste, reminded me of being back in China again, and outweighed the inconveniences. I recommend it, but be prepared to persevere and embrace it!

Hi first time i am very disappointed worst customer service..I ordered vegtables stir fry they give only pak choy Stir fry I asked it's not mixed vegetables they charged 8 pounds for single veggies stir fry..I asked she said mixed veggies we use cauliflower and carrots white colour sprouts beans sprouts I asked its Chinese vegetable she react like they use only those vegetables..I am disappointed I paid even i cnt able to eat what expect...I dnt how the make Chinese dishes without Chinese vegetables...she does not care about customer feeling it's waste of my money

We went as we have not been here before and we were very impressed by the quality of the food. Clearly caters to the Chinese community more as the website doesn't have much on it in English. Two menus - one spicy one more plain. We ordered 4 starters between 5 and 4 mains, 1 noodle and 2 boiled rice - the food was brought out when it was ready, not when we were ready - ie starters still on table when mains arrived. They forgot the rice - but as we were full anyway they simply knocked it off the bill at the end which was fair enough. We left with three full takeaway containers of noodles, sweet and sour chicken, and steamed veg.

This is the worst Chinese ever, the server me clogged up rice which was frozen from previous day. It was soggy and sour. The salt and pepper spare ribs were basically flour and butter on bone. There was certainly no way the ribs were pork ribs. The lady attendant was rude and disrespectful. This is despite, returning the food. I strongly believe if food inspectors paid them an unannounced visit there would be a barrage of issues to be found. My little advise, stay far away from this establishment for your own health benefit. The picture actually makes it look good.

Disgusting taste like rotten Cantonese King Pawn and very hard Sweet and Sour Cantonese Chicken. I should have stayed with my usual Sweet and Sour Chicken/Prawn Balls.

This is my first time going to golden taste and it was absolutely brilliant. We had the hotpot, and it was sooo good. So flavourful. The staff are so friendly. Will come here again. Honestly cant fault it one bit!

Went here for my first ever hot pot experience, it was lovely food, very helpful young lady helped us make a decision for what to get, as complete newbies. The spicy broth we got was delicious! lots and lots of different things to try on their menu, and reasonably priced also!

Delicious & very authentic Chinese food. Exciting menu, not at all "westernised". Hubby has eaten lunch here a few times and raves about it and he was right to do so. Today was my first visit and it was like being back in Hong Kong. All the food has a real "home cooked" feel about it. The chicken hot pot was particularly delicious, but it was all fresh & rammed with flavour. Will definitely be back. Thank you for a wonderful lunch (-:

A lovely family run restaurant in a cosy atmosphere, with generous portions and regional Chinese specialities - the chef brings back some ingredients himself, and also pickles his own chillies. I have been going for years. Their menu has changed slightly over this time but they will continue to make old favourites if asked. The dragon aubergine is worth requesting!

Delicious hotpot, great value and friendly staff. We are a Chinese family who have tried a lot of restaurants in Yorkshire and this is definitely near the top. Will visit again next time in Sheffield!

Ordering was easy from just eat however delivery status did not update and had to call the restaurant to see where the food is. Woman was rude when delivery the food. Didn’t get what we ordered as the ‘bbq’ ribs were in a dry sauce and very spicy. Ordered chicken balls and as it was bitten into there was a big brown gloopy chunk in the chicken 🤢🤢 tried to ask for a refund and the service was appalling, no apology, refund or communication even after sending photos to the restaurant. If you like a good and proper chinese this one is not for you.

小龙虾太好吃 the hotpot was so good as well. The ingredients not as good as hai di lao but the base comes with huge chunks of lamb inside, omg is it definitely worth the money!! Would come back again.

This is one of, if not the best, Chinese meals I have eaten at a restaurant in the UK. The extensive menu is superb and the quality of cooking a presentation is a joy. Loved the aubergine, the lamb with cumin, the salt, peooer and chilli tofu and squid and all other dishes. Service was friendly and very efficient. The chef, from Hunan, deserves every accolade. We will definitely return.

Sadly I have to leave a 1 star due to slack receptionist not letting me know it was cash only so I had to mess about on collection, food was ... ok but nothing special and the last 2 days I have been let's just say making sure I'm never too far from a toilet.

We ate in at the beginning of the week and the food was absolutely yummy. The service was second to none and value for money.....well, just amazing! We decided to have a takeaway tonight and it was just as good (including the service!!). Thank you - will definitely be back soon

Really enjoyed! This is the first Chinese restaurant we ate at that the food doesn't taste "generic." The servings are big. Really good value. The young lady waitress was so accommodating and very attentive. There was a guy, likely the chef, who even said hello. We would certainly come back and eat here again and recommend it to all our friends! We are Southeast Asian and this is the taste that we crave for!

Ordered through Just Eat. Food never arrived, yet the restaurant marked the order complete so Just Eat won't give a refund. We provided the correct address and phone number, as well as access instructions. Doorbell hasn't been touched and no one has trued to call us. Restaurant isn't answering it's phone or replying to the requests for an order update through the app. Food now over an hour late. They said they were on the way over an hour ago as well. We live a six minute drive from the restaurant. Now I'm £29 down with no food and loads of other restaurants have closed while we were waiting for this delivery.

I went here to try their hotpot and it was excellent, great staff and lovely atmosphere.

An overall excellent experience. The food was completely delicious and the staff were attentive and kind. An unassuming exterior hides extremely enjoyable and well priced food.

Today for the first time I ordered from this place. I like king prown chowmein.this is usually the only dish that I order because I don’t have any idea how other Chinese foods will taste and I don’t want to take risk:)) I called the shop prior to my collection and I was there after 20mins but I also waited another 10 mins in the shop. This chowmein did not have sauce but it was more tasty that other chowmein I had. Vegetables were less . Basically It was only spring onion, onions and garlics. Only problem was , the outer dry layer of onions were in my food and with every bite I had to take them out of my mouth! Chowmein was packed in a polyester packaging which I think is not suitable for pastas or noodles. If owner change the package to sustainable is better. In overall, I liked the food. It was almost 50% more expensive with less vegetables and no sauce and long waiting. But TBH it was very delicious. At the end of the day, taste is the feeling that remains in our mind :)

When i called person on the other end of the phone was very rude to me and slammed the phone down on me. Also when the support worker from the ward call they experienced your staff being rude to them. There was plenty to feed 2 persons it was very tasty . Disappointed that I was give a €1.00 coin instead of a pound coin. Other than that all everything seems OK

My favourite Chinese, the best food! Cumin lamb and Hunan style spicy chicken are particularly delicious. Ordered a takeaway through Deliveroo from here for the first time tonight and was not disappointed, have eaten in restaurant a few times and have been missing it over lockdown. The staff are also very friendly. Highly recommended!

Authentic, traditional food, well cooked.

My family and friends love this place. Food is always delicious! What makes this place so special to us is the authentic menu. They stick to their region's dishes/ingredients. Not bending to the western way of sweet and sour and other generic dishes (nothing wrong with it. But it's nice to try different styles) . They truly offer flavours that aren't common to the restaurants of London Road. I've noticed They cater to the customers request too... The table next to us were all vegetarian and so they presented them with an off the menu aubergine dish that looked amazing. Quality of service is top notch. A family owned business like this is so heartwarming. They speak to you so kindly. Passing by to ensure you're comfortable with everything in a polite manner. Unlike at usual restaurants where the waiter asks while you have a mouthful going. Our go to when we want a nice family night.

Small and unassuming restaurant/takeaway on London Road. I always ask for the Hunan menu, and the food blows me away. I've chatted to the owners several times, and have been offered everything from samples from the chef's own dinner, to house rice wine, to learning about Hunan itself. Mao's pork is always amazing, as are the dry pots. Such a lovely place. Yes, you might get your 7-Up served in a bottle and it's not exactly fine dining, which adds to the charm.

Tried this restaurant last night for the first time but for a takeaway..absolutely lovley food..masive portions..friendly staff..100% recommended..this will definitely be the Chinese I go to in the future..really enjoyed it 🙂

Food was very good,although it took a long time .friend got a meal she didn't order. Meals didn't come together ,missed rice off the order.my meal didn't come,had to ask again after 1 hour.service was chaotic!! Group of chienese came in after us ,got served straightaway whilst we still waiting. Handsanatiser was not available.

Thought we would try this place out of the blue as it is participating in the government eat out scheme. I thought it would be like any other bog standard Chinese restaurant but was definitely mistaken . We ended up having wonderful evening with dishes we had never tried or seen in other places. The menu is fantastic with a really wide range of food from giant unusual hotpots to the more classic dishes. The staff were extremely friendly and take time to speak to you as actual people not just customers. The portion sizes are really large as well so you definitely get your money’s worth , they also give you takeaway boxes if you order too much like we did. Quite a small restaurant but that made it more cozy and personal . Overall a great place and highly recommend to anyone thinking about trying it. Will definitely go again with or without the government scheme , really worth it .

I live nowhere near London Road but this is hands down my favourite Chinese restaurant in Sheffield. The hotpot experience is fantastic, everything tastes incredible and the staff are lovely.

Honestly I can’t understand the bad reviews for the eat-in experience, my family and I have just had an absolutely wonderful evening at this place! Excellent fresh ingredients and wonderful service from a lovely girl who was full of smiles. The soup bases were so full of flavour and there were so many hotpot ingredients to choose from. We will definitely be back again.

Went there for a take-out tonight. I had the braised beef claypot with tomatoes, which so beautifully tender and packed with flavour. The sauce had a warmish, spicy tinge and a big aniseed flavour. My son had the Chairman Mao Pork which featured some kind of delicious dried chilli in the deep, dark, rich sauce and again the chunks of meat were massive and melted in the mouth.

The food was great, and it came on time. definitely would recommend and order more from.

I’ve been to a couple of hotpot places in Sheffield but this is hands down the best one! The staff are very friendly, full of helpful advice and nothing is a bother. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the place itself is nice and clean! The food is amazing and they have a wide range of options if you aren’t wanting the hotpot, but I would recommend trying it! A hidden gem and we will definitely be returning!

Very good hotpot buffet. £17.99 includes soft drink, you can refill on the meats and veg (but one round koed me 😅). Excellent range of soup base to choose from and sauce is DIY mix. Will go again next time I go Sheffield 😁
