Golden Ocean in Eilean Siar

Shocking customer service! Absolutely disgraceful. I have been a loyal customer to Golden Ocean for a number of years and tonight have been treated horribly by the owner who argued with me on the phone when I merely called to let them know they had given me the wrong dish. I ordered crispy shredded chilli beef (number 35 for reference!) but instead received Kung Po Crispy Beef (number 36). I live a number of miles away so couldn’t simply run back which I would have done, no problem. The usual easy solution to this would be to refund or give a replacement the next time I was in, but instead I got made to feel like I was a liar - telling me I HAD received what I ordered and I was wrong. When I had the wrong dish staring me in the face!! Very unprofessional hearing arguments between the owner and chef about the whole situation. A little situation made into a big one because they couldn’t admit they had done wrong. DON’T EAT HERE! Other Chinese restaurants in Stornoway who deserve your money a lot more than these guys!

Portion size very small and the food was tasteless. The price for the food was high and the price of a can of juice was shocking.Very disappointing

Good menu, friendly helpful staff and the food arrives quickly and is delicious. The prices are very reasonable aswell.

Cheap and cheerful. Good variety menu and good quality food. Friendly staff. Relaxed family meal. I would happily return!

. Good little Chinese restaurant with takeaway next door, Menu fairly limited but not expensive. Was quite busy when we visited but the service was friendly and quick. Food was tasty.

Delicious and freshly.cooked while my S.O. waited, late one Sunday, was only customer at that time. Sounded great. Best Chinese meal for a long time! Unexpected. A meal for three.

Always steady food from here and very friendly staff to deal with especially the lady owner ! Open more thasn most as well !

We had king prawns chow mein, chicken balls, vegetable spring rolls and prawn crackers and they were all amazing! The place was clean, full COVID -19 measures in place-hand sanitisers, face masks so all food ordering process was very safe. I truly recommend it if you are in Stornoway !

Excellent food and service here. Visited during the festival weekend and still fast service despite the business of the town. Really lovely meal for two.

Don't ever go into this place... You pay £4.20 for a premium beer and it comes flat.. Apparently all cans of beer are flat when they are poured according to the manager... Customer service skills are so bad that it's laughable... I've never heard so much nonsense and she sent the poor waitress over to tell me this as she wouldn't face the complaint... There are so many nicer places with excellent customer service and lovely poured Stella Artois... Please avoid....

Le cadre est sans charme et surtout pas asiatique mais la gamme des plats est large. Les plats sont bons et copieux et l'emplacement du restaurant est bon aussi.

A Stornoway la domenica quasi tutti i ristoranti sono chiusi. Fra i pochi aperti il ristorante cinese. Cibo nella norma e nello standard dei ristoranti cinesi all’estero. Involtini primavera vegetariani, riso fritto veg, gelato con banana fritta ... tutto nella norma. Proprietaria molto gentile.

We found the food to be not great but not too bad. I thought the service was good and the young girl on duty did a great job. Friendly efficient a really really great job. The toilets are a disgrace and a health hazard. All sorts of stuff on the floor and up the walls dirty grotty and gut turning. This needs to be investigated by the local health authorities.

Visited here for a meal whilst on holiday. We had a table pretty quickly considering the time we were there on a Saturday evening, especially as we hadn't booked. Restaurant was very busy this evening, however staff dealt with this really well. I'd ordered duck in plum sauce. I'm used to plum sauce being a bit tart & overbearing - here, it wa tasteful and cry understated. I'm also used to having Chinese meals where the meat is quite fatty, whereas this really wasn't. We enjoyed our meal here, thankyou Golden Ocean.

Went in for something to eat late afternoon. Looked at the menu and decided to have our proper meal here.Husband loves Curry and this is what he had. I had my favourite Sweet/Sour Chicken Hong Cong Style both with boiled rice. Really lovely. Also had a couple of glasses of lovely wine then back to our holiday rental. Would recommend and will visit again when next in Stornoway.

Had business lunch in golden ocean, spring rolls to started with, Szechuan beef with steamed rice and milky coffee. It only costs me £14.30. Lovely food, reasonable price, don’t miss it if you are in town.

We were stopping in town overnight on route back to Barra and needed ome food. Its easy to find as its in the town centre. No problem getting a table and service was pretty quick. The food was good and not expensive

Vi var 5 personer der trængte til et hurtigt mindre måltid. Da de fleste havde lukket blev det dette sted og det fortrød vi bestemt ikke.

Ran in town for a quick solution to guests, scoff was great and all tubs were full, ribs had good chunks of meat, chilly chips best ever, spring rolls full

My wife and our friends from the USA visited the Golden Ocean on 29th. April. The service was brilliant and the food was fantastic. Recommend this place to anyone looking for great food.

Didn't expect to find a good Chinese in Stornoway however we really enjoyed our meal. Completely put me off our local chinese back home. The place was quiet in November, the service really good and friendly.

Good choice of takeaways in Stornoway and it’s the golden ocean that’s our place of choice tonight, speedy promote service and best spring rolls I have had in a while. But not sure what on as everyone and there granny has parked in the narrows making parking a wee bit of a longer walk, but well worth it.

This family break has been characterized by how quickly we can get to places in the rain. A few short steps from the car park, we decided to nip in to this restaurant. (Not our first choice). Actually it is more of a sit down takeaway. There were some tasty starters, and the egg-fried rice was nicely presented, but the main courses themselves were utterly unexceptional. The table next to us had some difficulties with their menu choices and food was left sitting for more than a few minutes. My prawn with cashew nuts was not totally fresh tasting. The desserts were a little better, although I believe that - traditionally - sticky toffee pudding should be served hot, if not at least warm. The banana fritters were delicious, as was the Chinese tea served in a very delicate glass pot at the end of the meal. But overall, the fare was average at best. Which made the total bill all the more surprising. Staff were also dressed very casually; not normally an issue but there was a distinct shortage of aprons, or uniform of any kind, giving it a very casual, takeaway air. Which is fine, as long as the prices match. Next time, we will walk a little further and sample more of what Stornoway has to offer for the same price range.

This is friendly place used by locals and tourists alike. Food was fine but nothing really special. Left full and satisfied.

We needed a pace to eat where we didn't need to book and wasn't going to cost the earth. We were made very welcome and had the set meal which included the aromatic crispy duck. The duck was among the best I've had anywhere. The ribs were a bit dry but everything else was much as I would have expected and very enjoyable.

This place is better than reviews might suggest. The food is good if not adventurous and the service fast, efficient and with a smile. And they’re open until 10 each night!

Drab looking restaurant, unkept and in serious need of update! Ate here with friends and most disappointed! Ribs sparse, curry awful, chicken tinder dry. Service - pleasant waitress but little interest shown other than in taking our order! Would not recommend or go back!

Quality of takeaway not consistent. Hit or miss depending on I guess who is cooking. Very slow at peak times . You need to spend £25 before they will accept debit/credit card which is ridiculous in present day - cash sales preferred!

Visited with 2 children that aren't so keen on Chinese food! Had an assortment of starters and Chicken Friend Rice & House special Chow mein. Everything was delicious and cooked in 'clean' oil which is always a bonus in a chinese restaurant.

Didn't like the place. Very formica based. Not really authentic Chinese food. All a bit westernised.

El precio es bastante elevado (20 libras mínimo por persona en nuestro caso) pero merece la pena si quieres salir de la comida local. El trato es excelente y la ubicación inmejorable!

I ordered Orange Chicken. What I got was a fried chicken tender drowning in liquified orange jelly. The fried rice contained rice and scant pices of fried eggs, no peas, scallions, or carrots. My husband ordered pork something. Our server was a very pleasant young girl. Service was good, food, not so much. Made me wish I'd bought fish and chips some where else. The cans of Diet Coke were the only good thing about this meal.

Was here last year when I was working. Came for dinner tonight and as usual it was lovely. Good service Food is served quickly and piping hot Very nice :)

Got a takeaway on Monday night whilst on holiday, picked the Golden Ocean based on reviews, service was very quick, hot and sour soup was very good, special curry was very good but the fried rice was very stodgy and well below par

Arrived at our hotel after a long drive, starving! No food being served so hotel recommended a few takeaways that open on a Sunday. Chose this one as closest and curry was lovely! Just what we needed! Very reasonably priced too. Wd definitely go back if starving in Lewis on a Sunday night!

We hadn't had decent Chinese food in years and we were delighted to find excellent Chinese food in Stornoway! It's right by the harbor and close to everything. Eat here!

Ordered chicken curry, sweet and sour chicken balls. The curry was yellow, runny, and tasteless with dry chicken. The sweet and sour balls were rubber and we think it might have been frozen chicken and the sauce tasted like it was shop bought. Only decent thing was the prawn crackers. We certainly wont return here.

Love this place, been many times, good service and price, wide range of food available, not sure what the people who left bad reviews were eating, I would highly recommend this wee place,

To call the food at this establishment "Chinese Food" is an appalling piece of misrepresentation. Avoid this place unless you are in desperate need of calories, because there is no enjoyment in what is dished up. No matter what the dish is called on the menu, it all tastes the same. I recommend that you go home and have a spam sandwich instead, That will be far superior cuisine.

The Golden Ocean is centrally located in Stornoway just by the harbour and the pedestrian shopping area. We had a starter between us and a meal each with drinks and the bill came to a reasonable £25. The food was very tasty and hot although it did take a little time to get served. The chicken chow mein that I ordered was a large portion as was my wife's vegetable chow mein.

me and my husband decided that chinese food was what we wanted to eat on this occasion so we found ourselves in the golden ocean. the place was empty except for a young girl who was our server and another woman who was sat eating her lunch (obviously staff). we were seated by the window and provided with a menu. we decided on the meal for 2. the server came and brought everything to the table and was very attentive. the food was nice enough but each dish was brought out 1 at a time and the whole process was quite time consuming. the overall meal was very nice and my only complaint is that the price was quite unexpectedly high.

We arrived very late in the lunch hour and so settled for a coffee - which was no problem for the staff, and it was of good quality

Good food and very friendly staff. Well worth a visit if you're in town. Chicken satay starter and special curry was excellent. Highly recommend having a meal here.

Nun gut Stornoway ist nicht London, aber von einem Lokal das keine 100 Meter von einer riesigen Gemüse Auswahl bei Tesco entfernt liegt, sollte man sich Minimal Qualität erwarten können - richtig? Weit gefehlt. Die Karte sieht zwar gut aus, doch nach der Bestellung passiert erstmal eine halbe Stunde nichts. Andere die lange nach uns kamen, waren schon bei der Hauptspeise als unsere Suppe kam. Erklärung ? Weit gefehlt, Suppe aus der Dose. Eine Weile später Hauptspeise von zweifelhaftem Geschmack, andere Gäste hatten schon bezahlt und sind weg... Einer mit dem Kommentar "Food was realy Not good". Ich stimme zu, lieblos, geschmacklos, nicht gut. Bei Tesco nebenan hätte es was besseres gegeben um einen Bruchteil des Geldes, man hätte es halt selbst aufwärmen müssen. Ad Verspätung: entweder werden Einheimische vorbereitet, oder dem Restaurant sind alle Gâste gleich sch...egal, beides Not amusing.

Comida muy sabrosa, y aunque llegamos cerca de la hora de cierre, nos recibieron y nos dieron una buena comida.

Fuimos allí como lugar original estaba completamente lleno. Llegamos a nuestros asientos por figura encantadora camarera bebidas pedimos. Permite buen tiempo para pedir comida. Lo que vino después fue muy sabroso y lo suficiente para mantenerte.

I have to agree with a previous review that things all tasted the same, the sauces are just different colours of gloopy bland and not even as good as supermarket, would it take much effort to add the odd vegetable - the place could do with a good clean too - avoid the soup starters, these are particularly nasty sub standard cup-a-soups.

Que 3 adultos y un niño de nueve años disfrutamos de nuestra Wun Tun, Crackers de gambas y langostinos tostadas entrantes seguido de pato en jengibre y cebolla, arroz frito con pollo, pato y vieiras Shung Tung con jengibre y cebolla. Todo delicioso y todos recién hechos. Y somos muy exigentes. . . No restaurante lujos con el énfasis en la excelente comida. Genial!

As there are very few places open on a Sunday evening we opted for a takeaway after a busy day touring around the Island. It was okay, certainly didn't look very appetising but tasted better than it looked. Rice was a bit congealed but edible. When you are really hungry you just have to go for it!!

Mit der Ambiente eines Familienrestaurants deutet wenig auf China hin aber die Speisekarte sieht gut aus. Die Rippchen zur Vorspeise hatte ich mir anders vorgestellt aber ich schäle das Fleisch von den drei Kochen ab. Rindfleisch Sechuan ist einfach Geschnetzeles mit Gemüse und auch beim gebratenen Reis erinnert mich nichts an China - weder der Geschmack des Essens, noch die Ambiente oder fie Bedienung. Immerhin,. ich habe alles gegessen und war satt.

This is the only time I've ever had duck in plum sauce which came out with pineapple. When I asked if they got the order wrong the young waitress assured us that was the plum sauce. Maybe not surprising since the beef in bean sauce came out with a sticky orange coloured sauce that tasted suspiciously like sweet and sour as well (but no pineapple this time).

It was Sunday and it was Stornoway. The Golden Ocean was open. This alone gives it 5 stars. Food was lovelly

Waited 50 minutes for main course with only a 10 people in the restaurant who had been served, chop suey arrived with not 1 bean sprout or water chestnut in sight. Asked for explanation and they said they had run out of them. Told them they should have taken it off the menu. Told them I wasn't paying for the chop suey with they agreed to. Waitress very apologetic. Bill came to £39.20 for mediocre meal. Expensive!

The restaurant could do with being refurbished but if you sit in for a meal in the day the food is usually nice. This all changes on a weekend night after midnight where you get charged 14 pounds for a very very tiny portion of rice/noodlesof and a drink. Do not come here after midnight!

Very expensive for wot you get and the place could use a good scrub however waiting staff are lovely and food is okay unless you go in on after midnight on a Saturday night and they are so busy they don't cook anything properly

on a wet day it didn't hit the spot for me. Very basic battered chicken with a sauce over and rice. Not very Chinese

Although not much to look at from the outside, don't let that put you off.The food was served quickly and of excellent quality. Offering the traditional range of Chinese cuisine and some Thai also, there is something for every taste

The place was very quiet although the take away next door was very busy. We have been in many Chinese in many places but this was as good as any. Good food, freshly cooked and plenty of it. Our first time but will definitely be back.

Always a great place for an excellent value lunch. Tends to be open more often than other eating places. Service, usually by local girls is superb.

Went twice recently and were the only ones in it ! maybe weekends they have more customers. One waitress, same both nights, was friendly and chatty, well presented. The menu is a regular chinese food that you might expect anywhere, prices are regular not to expensive. The small bar has the usual Tiger and chinese beer. It is quite a big restaurant and easy access from the pedestrian area of town. Toilets let it down, go if you must.

Visiting for the first time and looking for somewhere quick to eat and this didn't disappoint food was good and restaurant was clean and staff helpful extremely reasonable for 4 adults would recommend

When we arrived we were kindly welcomed, sat down and handed menus, picked what I would usually get from a chinese shop. We ordered two portions of chicken wings to start at £5 per starter and for this £5 you get 2 yes 2 chicken wings so £10 for our four chicken wings. Sweet & sour chicken hong kong style was £8 with no rice and £2 more for rice. so for 3 people, 3 drinks, 2 starters and 3 mains was over £40. I don't know if this a normal price for a chinese on an island but back in fife I would be wanting 4 or 5 people to eat for this price. Food was good and service was good but the price and the state of the toilets left us feeling cheated out of over £40

we visited the golden ocean last monday night, but with only 2 people sitting in the restaurant when we arrived, we decided to get a takeaway instead. prices were ok and we didn't wait too long. the food was edible for the most parts, but we definitely wont be eating from here again. the 'chicken' balls were disgusting. they had a strange texture and were hard and chewy in parts. the beef curry and rice was fine, as were the salt and chilli chips. but having started with the chicken, we were put off and couldn't properly enjoy the rest of the food.

Tried here as everywhere else booked on a Saturday. Better than nothing but pretty standard Chinese food full of MSG. Nice waiting staff but definitely don't go if you are a foodie!

Have been to better Chinese restaurants but the staff were friendly and the food was tasty, good value for what we got. however I totally agree with previous comments that the toilets are disgusting and the owner must do something to bring them up to an acceptable standard. Like most people I always think that the standard of toilets reflect the rest of the establishment including kitchens and if I had seen the toilets first I would have walked out. However the food was good and if the owner redecorates its a good place.

Dit zijn niet de porties die wij gewend zijn in Nederland.Middelmatig restaurant. WC's zijn er verschrikkelijk vies en krakkemikkig.Ook is het restaurant zelf niet echt schoon.

My meal was fine and service quick & friendly, but I made the mistake of using the gents toilets. No soap, not even an empty dispenser or any evidence of there ever having been any form of soap. I had a quick look in at the WC and the view wasn't great: (1) I don't know how people using a toilet can make such a mess, and (2) why don't the owners make cleaning a priority - it didn't look like a recent redecoration of the cubicle! I shudder to think what the cleanliness in the kitchen is like if the gents toilet is any measure.Regardless of the meal and service, I won't be eating here again unless there is a very visible change in ownership/management.

Every time I passed this restaurant it was busy. Always a good sign.I was seated quickly. The wait staff are young, but did good and looked after me well.There is a great menu of typical Chinese meals but also some more unusual alternatives. I had the spiced pepper ribs to start which were great and then the ramen - which was awesome.I really enjoyed this restaurant. Probably one of the best in Stornoway.

We found this place after we made the crossing from Ullapool and parked in the car park just across the street. The restaurant is very clean and has a lot of natural light. Our waitress was very friendly, and we didn't have to wait long for our food. The food was some of the best we had on our trip. This place is conveniently located to the city center, so we'd recommend it for a nice break from looking around. The music playing was not loud, and was actually pretty relaxing as a complement to our meal.

Decided to call in here for a meal on an impulse. It wasn't terribly busy, service was reasonable. The food was passable but not outstanding. The thing that badly let them down was the state of the toilets. No toilet paper, no soap, the lock was broken off the door and the floor was not clean. We complained but the only thing they did was take in one toilet roll.

We ate here on our 2nd night in Lewis. Very efficient, hot food. Simple range of accompanying drinks, but wide menu choice of food. Clean environment and friendly staff.

We ate in the Golden Ocean on our recent visit to the Isle of Lewis. 4 of us had different meals and each enjoyed them very much. Service was good and food prepared very quickly. Would recommend.

Vi var sex seglare som beställde helt olika rätter, alla var mycket bra! Särskilt imponerade var vi av "aromatisk duck" eller något sådant - det var krispig anka på en tallrik, färska grönsaker med sås och tunna pannkaksliknande bröd till (inga nudlar eller ris, utan bara detta). Oerhört fräscht!Detta var en av de få restauranger som hade öppet en söndag kväll i Stornoway.

Excellent Chinese takeaway. Open for many years now, both a restaurant and takeaway. Great food, friendly staff and excellent service. Not much else I can say except that I would recommend it above the other Chinese takeaways in Stornoway, it's also the only one with a restaurant section.

Nipped in here for a quick bite to eat with my son . Quality of the food was fine, quantity was more than adequate and overall no nasty surprises. Specialises in Peking and Cantonese cuisine and also has a few Thai dishes on offer .Quite centrally located in Cromwell Street near the harbour so not too difficult to find.

The establishment does not appear appealing from the outside & once inside I was still not sure. However, once the food arrived I had no complaints (with the exception that the beer was bottled & very expensive).

me and my partner went to go for our usual take away and decided we would sit in.. there was chewing gum stuck to our table, the staff were scruffy, we both had a starter were mine was just thrown together our main meal is our usual from the take away we had the same and mine looked and tasted uncooked compared to my partner, we both ordered pudding and the cheese cake we got served was frozen. being our usual take away what we had for our main we usually have from the take away with side orders never more that £20 when we went for our bill it was near £50 and all we drank was an orange juice each, we had pudding deducted. but seriously how can you justify the cost of sitting in to our normal take away. theres only no wonder this place is always empty looking. so grubby

After a failed booking (our fault) somewhere else we had to find somewhere short notice without booking.The golden ocean accommodated.Been coming to stornoway for many years. Never been in. Always thought a bit brightly lit, and cold looking.The service was fast and friendly, and the food completely fine.While I'm more of a curry fan than a Chinese, this place is a better standard than the balti place, and would happily recommend if you're after a Chinese meal.

Starters are poor value - small and relatively expensive. However, main courses are fine and include some interesting variants on the usual.

Lovely staff here. The food is bog standard high street Chinese style. They also have a take away which is open on Sundays.

Greeted by a woman chewing her food in a vulgar manner. Considered leaving as so abrupt but stuck with it as felt hungry. Ordered food then as was taking in the waiting place noticed lots of what looked like dust & gritty greasy stuff around the front of the counter corners & started to feel this was not a great option. Tatty looking waiting area, which was not nice but could bear this bit, but the dirt once spotted was not so nice. Food not too expensive and was hot but not the quality had hoped for. Bit watery & lacked flavour. Decided that this was the first and LAST time we would go to this place! Found another perfect place to buy food from in Stornaway. The whole experience was miserable. I know my Chinese food & this was poor.

The Golden Ocean doesn't look too appealing from the street and it doesn't change inside. But if all you want is relatively cheap Chinese food without silver service this will suffice. The Chinese menu was extensive with some appealing dishes - although we still smile when we recount the ability to order Chinese WITH CHIPS!. It is a good spot to dine when you have had your fill of haggis and black pudding at traditional Scottish restaurants.. The young (Scottish) waitress was a gem - very friendly and informative.

... und dann besser als erwartet.Unsere Fähre kam verspätet an, unserer Vermieter hatte uns wenig Aussicht auf ein Abendessen nach 22 Uhr gemacht. Lediglich das Golden Ocean habe vielleicht noch geöffnet, und so war es dann auch.Von außen eher wie ein Takeaway aussehend, war es innen durch aus akzeptabel, der Service sehr freundlich und die Preise absolut in Ordnung.Den 4. Punkt gibt es für die lange Öffnungszeit, so dass wir nicht mit knurrendem Magen zu Bett gehen mussten! ;-)

If you walked past The Golden Ocean you would more than likely keep going as it doesn't look very appealing from the outside. But if there was ever an example of don't judge a book by it's cover, that would definately apply to The Golden Ocean.Don't expect fancy white table covers and uniformed staff, but what you will get is excellent service and good food.Maybe not the best chinese meal i've ever had but certainly great value for money.Don't dismiss this restaurant because of its shabby Chic, pop in and treat yourself to good food at reasonable prices.

Newly redecorated- it offers a wide choice on the menu. We had decided to go for the Chinese menu and weren't disappointed. From the plain to the really spicy all the dishes were made to order, piping hot and delicious.

I go here every week, the staff are very friendly and the food is nice. Sadly recently they have stopped serving half portions. I think this is a mistake especially when people have kids.

We stopped here for a quick bite to eat while waiting for ferry. Was pleasantly surprised by menu, you can order anything from filled rolls to a three course Chinese lunch.We all ordered from the set lunch and it was delicious, empty plates all round. Special mention must go to the noodles which were delicious.This is a pleasant, clean and very handy restaurant. The menu is great and the food is delicious. The staff were very pleasant and friendly and we will call in again next time we are in Stornaway.

We didn't have a huge choice of food as we were staying in a B&B and have 2 dogs and couldn't find any dog-friendly places to eat, so take-away it was! Well it was distinctly average - the worst thing was the noodles tasted very strange. The rice was stodgy and not pleasant. My chicken and cashew nuts had a bitter taste that was unpleasant, and my husband's BBQ duck was bland. The ribs were nice though!! I'd recommend only if you are desperate for a Chinese meal in Stornoway.

Average Chinese food, Good service and friendly staff, Not a great deal of choice but most likely to be the only Chinese open during the day.

I would like to write a review of the food at the Golden Ocean.Alas, I have been here nearly an hour without having been troubled by any further attention from staff. I did have a beer. I finished that half an hour ago and no one has either advised me that I might have to wait a long time for my food or asked me if I would like another drink. It's a toss up as to whether dehydration or starvation will reach me first .Absolutely appalling service .

Went here on bank holiday Monday. Lunch menu was £8.50 for 2 courses, which my husband chose to do, but you could have a main course for £5.50, which is what I did. He had chicken noodle soup and beef curry with fried rice, I had chicken with green pepper and black bean sauce and boiled rice. Service was good and all of the food was very tasty. Also, it is the first Chinese restaurant I've ever been in where you can get a BLT!

An unlikely place to have a Scottish Breakfast or coffee in the Morning. The food is reasonable in Price & Quality & the location is reasonably Central.
