Won't accept cash ... then won't accept cards. I tried to get a coffee here a few weeks ago and tried to pay cash as my phone had died. They told me they couldn't accept cash - only card payments. I was annoyed and disappointed. Today I ordered a coffee to be told they can only take cash as their card reader isn't working. I'm now very annoyed and very disappointed.

Poor show all round. The price I paid for what I got was shocking! Dreadful customer service from the staff that all looked miserable to be there. Even heard the manager belittle at a poor girl for using the toilet before making a purchase! Can’t even believe it. Think this place only runs because of the captive audience. Be wise and go elsewhere!

The staff kicked out a birthday boy for eating birthday cake brought onto the premises. Even when I'd pre-approved it! I asked and planned ahead of time if I could bring in a birthday cake for a birthday and was told this was fine. They politely put the cake behind the counter. We came back to a quiet empty cafe and I collected the cake and set it down on the table. Almost immediately an older staff member stormed over and told us we cannot eat food from outside on the premises and we must go elsewhere if we want to eat the cake. We were stunned. We had not even had time to sit down, light candles or look at the menu to decide what coffees and snacks we wanted. We were upset by what had just happened so we immediately packed up and left. On leaving we were told by the same staff member "You wouldn't do it at a restaurant would you?" ... this is how public birthdays work in restaurants! I understand the need to make sure the cafe makes a profit but we had not even had a moment to look at a menu, the cafe was quiet so there was no competition for space. It put a damper on the end of a day and immediately deprived the café of our custom, as well as for the foreseeable future.

Food was ok but very overpriced for what was received. Service was also very below par with the lady serving being incredibly unwelcoming. Will give this one a miss next time and try one of the other cafes the Tweed Valley has to offer.

Have used the peel cafe for a post ride coffee and snack for a while now and unfortunately despite the prices rising the whole experience has gotten worse. This was highlighted today with a shocking attitude I received from the manager. I went into the peel to buy a couple of coffees for myself and a friend after a long day riding the nearby trails and also use the toilet facilities. I went to use the toilet facilities first as it obviously makes more sense to use the toilet then buy the coffees (so I don’t have to carry the coffees into the toilet with me). Where the individual who told me she was the manager stopped me and insisted I buy something or I’m not allowed to use the toilet. She even said “no you will be buying something here if you are planning on using my toilets” after I told her I was planning on getting a coffee after I used the toilet facilities. The whole situation was a bit unexpected and embarrassing for myself to be honest and it’s not what you expect when entering a cafe you have used frequently for years. I understand the frustration of people using the toilets and not being customers but the approach stopping people who are headed to the toilet and insisting they buy things before using the facilities is ridiculous! Especially as I was clearly a mountain biker and the fact that the majority of the customers will also be mountain bikers, it’s sort of obvious that lots will use the toilet facilities before getting lunch/coffees ect. The attitude and tone from the manager was overall rude and made me feel incredibly unwelcome and embarrassed as I just needed the toilet before buying a drink! A shame as I’ll now have to go to Peebles for that much needed post ride caffeine hit.

Staff very young but kind and courteous. The issues we had were: 1) This place was desperately short staffed 2) The cafe is huge but has one small till in use (and another not used, presumably due to understaffing), hence massive queues 3) Tables had not been cleared and surfaces were covered in rubbish 4) The male toilets were out of order so only one toilet was in use for the whole place 5) Given that this cafe serve an active community of cyclists, there was virtually nothing healthy on the menu, it was mostly variants of burger and fries 6) The fruit container on the service contour contained only a pile of entirely black, shrivelled bananas- ew! Nobody seemed to have noticed Given that people from all over the world visit Glentress, they would be sorely disappointed by a visit here. There used to be a lovely visitor centre in the other car park which seems to have closed. The Forestry Commission are making lots of changes to make more money out of the wider site, hence it is hard to find all the route markers, especially for walking as various sections are closed. After a coffee, we decided to leave and had a lovely lunch down the road at Loulabelles in Innerleithen- recommended!

I’m not sure that I’d go back again. All in all it was a very bizarre experience. We waited an hour for 2 burgers and a baked potato. If we’d have been advised of the wait I would have been happy to stay at the cafe, whilst my husband and kids could have used the time to ride the trails a little longer. When our meal did eventually arrive it was without cutlery. The wooden disposable cutlery was difficult to use and also seemed a shame that everything was disposable, despite hopefully being recyclable. I asked the waiter when our meals finally arrived, if my kids could possibly have a complimentary drink, as after an hours wait their drinks were obviously now finished. Even if it was just a sign of goodwill? The waiter asked the lady who looked to be in charge and was rewarded with an odd look back at us. Nobody came to explain or apologise and we were just left feeling a bit awkward. Not sure ignoring your customers is the best customer service policy? I just felt it was overpriced and sadly reliant on a captive audience. It’s such a shame as on previous visits it has been great.

I entered a Half-Marathon race that spanned the entirety of the Glentress forest. Bloody difficult race but some amazing views at the same time. Anyway, I stopped by the cafe beforehand to get a pre-race Caffeine boost. Internally and externally, the place was fresh and modern while tying in with it’s immediate surroundings. The food and drink on offer was vast. I can highly recommend it specifically for Vegans - i’ve never seen such a varied choice. Very accommodating. I ordered a Flat White and it was decent. The prices were slightly on the expensive side but the quality on offer fully justified this. The cafe, amongst other facilities within Glentress, left me impressed on my first visit to the location. I think it’s a brilliant place that promotes the Scottish Borders in a positive manner.

This used to be a great place for a bite after riding the trails but our last few visits have been poor. Last weekend we went in for lunch. Ordered sausage and chips, vege nachos and a Chicken Bagel. All three meals were terrible. I'm the classic 'human dustbin dad' in our house but even I couldn't stomach these dishes. Not cheap either. It seems the place has really gone downhill. The staff were miserable too, not sure what's happened. Lesson for next time, bring sandwiches.

The café is a strange mix of good food (tasty, hot, sweet potato soup) and lazy offerings (served with cheap stodgy white roll) in a potentially excellent but jaded interior. A hot dog is served is similarly disappointing - cheap to make, expensive to buy. And waken up staff!! You are serving visitors who are motivated, fit, enthusiastic, well travelled and have money to spend. Engage with them, discuss food options, show interest, make us feel welcome rather than an inconvenience late in the afternoon. Thank us for being there and encourage us back. Serve the food with cheer and you might even have received a money tip rather than this one-smile, be kind, be thankful!

Paid £8.50 for a cold baked potato and waited 25 mins for it to arrive at a quiet time in cardboard box and inadequate disposable cutlery. This is an international biking destination and requires hospitality services to reflect this. Unfortunately the cafe has gone downhill and even considering the rise in food prices, the prices here are way way above the quality of the food. The soup cup was not even filled, the “macaroni” cheese special which was charged at restaurant prices was a small portion and was not even made with macaroni (fussy I know but it is in the name!). Burgers were over-cooked / burnt. Plus service was slow due to staffing levels. A real shame because it’s been a nice treat to look forward to in the middle of a brilliant day biking. Homemade sandwiches from now on sadly.

4th Aug. Visited Glentress and went for some lunch after riding the trails. Waited for 30+ mins for our food to arrive and when it did the chicken burger was very lack lustre and tasteless. Compared to other trail centre cafes this must be one of the poorest I have been at. Definitely would not return ever for food, not really getting the claimed connection to Peebles Hydro as the level of service was terrible. Couple that with trying to find a clean table to sit at as several covered in ketchup and other debris.

The staff gave us a felafel burger with halloumi cheese when we specifically requested vegan. They redid the order without question but still. 2. The cheese and bacon burger came with a large green CATERPILLAR!! We were nearly finished it when we discovered it, luckily still whole. When I returned it they not once, offered us a refund. Sure they were apologetic, I mean how could you not be, but to still pay full price?? Nah, poor. We won't be rushing back for that. Very poor customer service.

We live locally and frequently walk and ride in this forest. The venue for the cafe is great....food average (and expensive)....the service is insufferable. It is persistently understaffed. It is not difficult to anticipate when this cafe is likely to attract visitors such as holiday and weekend periods....however there is little evidence that management have made any attempt to staff the cafe accordingly. The staff that are on duty are often overworked.

I asked for the table to be cleared prior to bringing my food when a millennial staffer told me it wasn't his problem. I explained as a staff member who had just taken my money I would like and expect it to be his problem but he simply stated he would not argue with me and walked away. However the assistant did agree to ask she consulted the cook and I was told I could have a breakfast roll and that they didn’t have one of the items I had ordered anyway. I agreed to a refund and then had to decide on an alternative meal I had a flatbread by partner had a toastie -the toastie was burned and the flatbread was mediocre meanwhile 20 minutes later when the meal had arrived my coffee was cold. This food was served in cardboard boxes very poor for the environment when plates could have been used. A very stylish, well maintained little cafe. Slightly pricy at around 1.75 for a bottle of pop but expected, since it's the only place for refreshment.

Stopped here to kill a few hours and must say I was impressed. My wife and I are not into mountain biking and even looking up at the people on the zip wires at Go Ape would give us vertigo. The café is nice, spacy and modern and catered mostly for mountain bikers, hikers and Go Apes. Never feel comfortable eating near dogs but looks like they are allowed if you're into that kind of thing.Oh...nearly forgot; the food is delicious, hot and relatively cheap. Soup and a sandwich deals, Paninis, hot filled rolls and tea....oh and a free bottle of lovely cold water on each table.Put your bike on the car rack, dig out your old clothes, take £33 for Go Ape, swing about the trees, cycle round the forest for an hour then get yourself down to the café for some lovely food and a well deserved cup of tea. Lovely pit stop while walking in Peeblesshire hills. Very friendly staff and yummy food in relaxed atmosphere where muddy boots, bikes and dogs are the norm.

Spent three days at Glentress and three lunches at the café. The food is well priced and comes in decent amounts. Loads of room in side and the staff helpful and pleasant- really nice place to spend an hour before hitting the trails again.

Lovely staff, lovely location, spotlessly clean. Fresh hot coffee and the best bacon and sausage sandwich ever. Piping hot, lots of filling and topped off with a Tatty Scone. I was unsure what one was, the lovely lady said try one on us. I was yummy.

Went back yesterday for the first time in ages. The place has been transformed. The old old owners were producing terrible food, but now it has been taken over by Peebles Hyrdo. I had a fantastic home made soup. The place has all new furniture (much more welcoming) and screens showing outdoor sports. I spoke to a member of staff about the changes as I'd stopped going there as because since the old Hub cafe was replaced by the Peel cafe, the quality of the food has dropped to the point of being not worth going. Now they have the fantastic building and the same quality food as Peebles Hydro! They said they've been having trouble with queues at peak weekend times; but they are almost finished installing a new counter with an extra till for quick purchases which they hope will solve the problem. I went mid week and I was served straight away. I'm delighted in the change of ownership as our trip to Glentress are going to be much more fun now. They also said they have a 10 year lease from the Forestry Commission.

The cafe has vastly improved under its new management with a far more inviting atmosphere, comfortable chairs and much better food and coffee. The biking videos on the big screens are a nice touch too. Staff are lovely and the manageress couldn't be nicer. I really don't get the bad reviews! As a local, I really couldn't fault the food, coffee or service. Try the cappuccino cake. It's to die for

Yes there was a queue and yes there was a wait but it was a brilliant sunny day and that drew a crowd so they couldn't put in more staff and just expect the weather I guess. We got enough seating quickly enough as we split the party and some foot there early while others went for another go at the low green route.Rolls were £3 but extra filming only £1 so made sense to double up, turned out that the haggis and tattie scone were all double slice anyway so I was very happy. Well cooked egg too runny to go with the haggis. Hot chocolate tasty but would be better in take away cup with lid as my friend got rather than ceramic mug which lost heat fast.Others in the party had soup and kids had ample hot dog (which looked like a proper herb sausage mix not cheap watery hot dogs) or burger meals which came with skinny fruits that looked golden and Felicia, said the soup was very tasty. For those saying it's a long wait plan what you want and get someone to go early (say if they're too tired to do that route for the fourth time) that way not all are waiting to get served. As we split the party I had expected them to offer but they haven't and engaged up in queue behind us. With short fault in winter that meant we didn't have as long to ride.Dogs were welcome and there was a very friendly young black Labrador who wanted everybody to throw his stick for hours presumably belonging to someone on the staff.I didn't go to the bathrooms in the cafe but the ones outside to the side of the cafe were a bit smelly again because of sunshine and crowds I guess so if you're taking kids maybe again plan one patent queue for snacks etc the other get kids through the indoor bathrooms.Kids were entertained at tables by the multiple big screens showing amazing sports and stunts which had to be seen to be believed.

Fed up of this place now. Tasty food and nice coffee but for the last 5 or 6 visits, 30+ minute wait in the queue and it's not even a peak time period (usually around 3pm). Still not enough tables (loads of empty floor space) and what few tables there are always have a pile of used dishes on them, just not enough staff to take care of everything.Yesterday, I waited in the queue for 45 minutes, starting at around 2:50. Didn't get back out onto the trails until after 4pm, good thing we brought our lights. The girl making the coffee is efficient but the lady working the till is a chatterbox, the cook spends a lot of his time stood in the doorway and there's another young girl who's only job it seems is to wonder around offering people ketchup for the food that they're still waiting for.

Waited in a huge queue to be served, then I think they cooked our baked sweet potatoes from scratch - at least an half hour wait. No good for hungry mountain bikers! We were here during the holiday between Christmas and New Year, so maybe it is not so slow at quieter times, but won't risk it again. Plenty of picnic tables about for a packed lunch!

Having visited glentress for years and always had at least one stop off at the cafe on every visit we won't be back unless things change, no longer the outdoor friendly cafe it used to be, limited furniture with sofas and cushions on chairs... not really fitting with the surroundings. The menu is disappointing, over priced breakfast rolls, and £1 extra for every extra, no full breakfast, and then no burgers / hot dogs until after 12... added with slow service not worth it!

Every time I come here (quite a bit this summer and autumn), the service keeps getting slower and the tables get less attention. Lately, I've found myself queuing in a progressively longer queue each time (even during off-peak periods) and having to wait longer each time for my order. There seems to be plenty of staff but if you watch what they’re doing on an individual level, then half of them are just slacking and the other half are still far from efficient. On my last visit, I watched one lad behind the counter who’s only job (it seemed) was to take the order slips from the girl at the till into the kitchen and then come back out and stand their until the next order slip is ready. Mind blowing, I want his job. Easy money!Coffee still tastes good but I don’t bother ordering food now as I don’t have all day, there are trails waiting to be shredded.

Mackays was absolutely the best fish and chips I had tasted in years. The portions were very generous, and the menu was surprisingly wide-ranging too.
