George Hotel of Colchester Restaurant in Colchester

Stayed for a 2 night break. Lovely room, ice breakfast and ate in the restaurant and wasn’t disappointed the food was mice and all the staff are lovely especially Taylor.

I have not been to George hotel for a long time. First impression very nice decors lot is space. We booked the resturant I expected something above average but the food was below average not impressed at all but the waiter he was super friendly. It will be good for hotel resident if they won’t fancy to go out in Colchester and explore other resturant.

Huge que of 3 people at bar , 3 staff behind bar , 2 of which were talking to there friends at end of bar taking no notice of us 3 waiting .. young lass was the worst ..ellie i belive her name was , 25 mins to get through 3 waiting customers . There to surprise of friends who we haven't seen for 7 yrs , booked a table for 8 .. we all ended up walking out after waiting 30 mins for a waiter to take it drinks orders .. then for her to point her finger as if to say .. wait your turn . So if your looking for good food go out of front door , turn left n walk down to turkish restaurant on your left where theyll treat you like a person instead of some thing on bottom of your shoes . HOTEL OWNERS NEED TO GO IN ONE SATURDAY EVE AND SEE /WATCH THERE STAFF .. #RUDE ,TERRIBLE SERVICE ..NOT FORGETTING THE FREE DRINKS THAT FRIENDS HAD !! KEEP AWAY FROM THIS PLACE

Took advantage of their two courses for £15 offer. Very hard to fault the soup and chicken breast main dish were faultless. Staff very friendly and efficent. Wine was fairly priced.

Had breakfast here when staying at the hotel. Staff are lovely and really friendly like having breakfast at your mates house. Food was also really nice. Some different milks and veggie options.

Not been to The George before but really liked it. Beautiful decor, great atmosphere and friendly, helpful staff. Had lunch in the restaurant - party of 6 - and the food was delicious, especially the desserts which are made in house. One thing which would improve the menus would be more vegetarian/vegan dishes. Thank you and will be back!

8 of us were there, pre-booked for a mothers' day late breakfast. The drinks took 20 minute to arrive. The breakfasts (mainly eggs) arrived nearly one hour after we arrived. The food was good quality, tasty and well-cooked, apart from a pancake, which was burnt and had to be returned. If the place was busy with walk-ins, it would have been understandable, but there were only 7 other people in the restaurant. The serving staff offered no reasons for ridiculously long wait. A very poor show.

Returned for the first time since visiting March 2022 (very disappointing) Was a totally different experience now, food excellent, good choice and well presented. Will def visit again. The vegetarian risotto was very good. They also do very good cocktails.

Had a nice evening with friends and have to say the food was really good. They are under staffed though and the service was a bit haphazard,I must add that the people who served us were great but just had too many tables to cover. We had 2 of our 8 main courses come out when most of us had finished meal. They instantly told us we would have a bottle of wine deducted from the bill, without us saying anything,As I say great food and really nice service but they are stretched too thin.

Nice to see the George restaurant punching again. The refurb is tastefully done with a good mix of old and new. Prime location in the High Street, a lovely old, beamed building with comfortable arrangements. Plenty of space, colourful additions and a welcoming staff. We had an early evening dinner which was attended to by the wonderful Chloe and assisted ably by polite Taylor - we thank you both. A decent selection on the menu and good choice of wines. The food was good, a slight issue on one main course was dealt with swiftly. We enjoyed and will be back, if you'll have us.

Came to this restaurant from all over the south to celebrate a girlfriends 70 birthday. Table booked for 7pm tonight for a party of ten Finally got meal at 9pm which was tasteless and cold. No apology from the management. Just that they were busy. This was totally unexceptionable when its a Saturday night and we had to prebook our meals and pay deposits. We had another place to be at 9.30. So we left without a deserts but they did end up reducing the bill because of the complaint. Wouldn't recommend Going to this place until the management know how to run and organise the establishment

It was generally a disappointing experience. Simple things, we arrived having booked and were left standing waiting for longer than we worked expect. We weren't particularly enamoured of the atmosphere, to be honest the place felt a bit rough, quite lairy. We didn't get the best table, but we could have asked to change, however the biggest problem was that the food took nearly an hour to arrive. The food itself was OK, could have been a little warmer and I'm not sure they had the best ingredients, both the lamb and the duck were a bit lacking in flavour. The plus sides, were that the staff were really pleasant and the Irish coffees were delicious.

A really great experience for the whole of our family. The food was good and all the staff couldn't have been more helpful. It was well worth every penny we spent and we wouldn't hesitate to return. Atmosphere was really festive and all other guests around us appeared to be enjoying the relaxed environment. It felt very homely with the availability to move from the more formal dining area into the relaxed sofa and armchair area where there was live music for the day. Great value for money...well done The George!

Four of us dined here on a cold Saturday evening. Two of us shared 4 Tempura Prawns to start, which sadly arrived along with our main courses after an hour’s wait! To follow two of us chose Roasted Lamb Rump which was nice, though sadly the sweetbreads were tough as they weren’t prepared/cooked correctly. The others had Honey Glazed Pork Belly and a lukewarm House Burger - he would have sent back had he not already waited an hour for it. Not a great experience …

Used to visit really often several years back with my parents and have fond memories. We stopped visiting around 13 years ago as the place was becoming run down, grubby and smelly, which was a real shame. I’ve read that there is a planned £10m refurb and foolishly thought that there must be improvements being made so decided to give it a try.

Went here for lunch with my family whilst visiting England. The service was awful,we felt as if we were annoying the staff by being there,between course's plates where not cleared and when we asked that they were the waitress rolled her eyes and said I know,if she knew why didn't she do her job. After that we weren't offered desserts and had an awful job to find someone to pay,please avoid.

We went for a large family meal for a celebration, this was in the winter time. the geroge does have a very warm cosy feel to it and that is what I like about the place. we were seated swiftly and placed our orders. Drink service was a little slow but not too bad through the meal. the food was very much upto what I was expecting, portion sizes were great and reasonably priced also. the prawn linguini is recommended. I would certainly come here again for food and drink in the near future.

This hotel/Restaurant now belongs to Surya Hotels Ltd and has changed hands 3 times in the last few years but has got progressively worse. We made an online booking for 5.30pm and by 5.50, in an empty restaurant, we still hadn't been served. We had to get our own drinks from the bar and lay the tables ourself. When the first course arrived at 6.10pm it was the receptionist who brought in the plate. This consisted of Calamari which was cold. For the main course we all had Scampi and Chips which was actually very nice. The puddings were good and the service when it started was actually very good with the young waiter paying very good attention. However, this restaurant has gone downhill in a few years. It used to have nice tablecloths and a pleasant atmosphere, but now, due to cost cutting, it has got progressively worse. The staff work well, but in difficult circumstances. What really made me fed up was having to pay £2.50 an hour car parking charges at the rear. If you are a guest at this hotel, you pay £9.00 a night, which is absolutely appalling for a hotel of this stature. It needs a complete refurbishment and a bit of real money spent on it. Surya, up your game a bit with this one. You have a great asset here, bang in the middle of the High Street, and you are letting Colchester down very badly. I, or my family will not be returning until we have some evidence of some effort being put in.

We called in at the George for a coffee and cake while shopping. We ordered at the bar, we had a brandy each which was served straight away, then we waited for our coffee. We could see the staff and the preparation in the coffee area which had absolutely no sense of care or urgency. After half an hour we cancelled our order and left. The only saving grace was a free mince pie which was excellent.

The dinner was delicious which is how this has scored at all. We are grateful to the chef and would love for he cooking Team to have all of our tip!

I have visited the George a couple of times recently and on each occasion have been totally impressed by both the food and the service. We visit with my sister-in-law who is in a wheelchair and it is fair to say that the staff are so understanding and go out of their way to be helpful. It really does mean that we can have a very enjoyable lunch. Full credit must go to Anthony and Antonio for their outstandanding professionalism as waiters and compassion as human beings. Full credit must also go to the chef who produces top quality, well presented food at very reasonable prices. In the restaurant you can mix and match a fabulous table d'hote menu with the simpler but still delicious bar menu. As stated by previousl writers the white bait is amazing! The fish I had were slightly larger than normal whitebait nearer the size of spratts. I preferred them and they were beautifully tender and tasty. Definitely the best I have had! I then had belly of pork, cooked to perfection on a bed of mashed sweet potato finished with spinach and roast cherry tomato. It tasted as wonderful as it sounds. The salmon my wife had on a bed of herb mash with green beans and roasted cherry tomato was also stunning in presentation and taste. Colchester 1 bitter, a very locally brewed beer made with flavoursome Boadicea hops , was a great accompaniment to my meal I was just glad my wife was driving.

Tough beef, garlic on the potatoes and under cooked veg and chewy Yorkshire puddings! Now I know why it was empty at 12:30 on a Sunday in the middle of the high street..... It's because everyone has gone to the Toby Carvery down the road. What a shame.....

This is a famous landmark building since it has been around for about 500 years. its half a mile from the castle, and its right in the centre of Colchester. The cellar contains the remains of a roman road and evidence of the firestorm when Boadicea burnt Colchester (at that time the capital of Roman England) to the ground. The inside of the building is interesting if nothing else. The menu was a bit lean but the food we were served was wonderful - you can tell food cooked by a chef from food cooked by a cook. The meal is definitely worth going again for ! The service by the two waiters was cheerful and attentive and the cost of the meal was way lower than we expected. Altogether a pleasant experience and a nice place. We're glad we went !

I've eaten here quite a few times. It's not the cheapest place to eat in town but the food is always excellent and the staff go above and beyond for the customers. I love the courtyard area which is small but as a smoker it's an ideal retreat from the high street as it's quieter and a bit cooler than the tables at the front.

My review is only based on popping in for a quick (later afternoon) drink with my partner. But, from my impression, the bar area & downstairs loos could do with a little face lift / a bit of care and attention. For example, there was a "henry" hoover stored just by the ladies loos - which isn't really what you'd expect in a hotel I don't think. The barman could also do with smiling a bit more - particularly as he was front of house.

Amazing hot food that's very tempting, lovely polite staff, clean and tidy and totally recommend you visit to start your day

Stopped here for lunch on a sunny day and went to sit in the rear courtyard instead of out at the front of the hotel on the noisier roadside. It was a bit run down and uncared for but the main problem is that is seems to get used as the smokers area, not so nice when you are eating. Perhaps there needs to be a clear indication that it is a smokers area (or not..?) Sandwich lunch with kettle chips was good, salad bits on the plate a bit sad looking. Would probably look for another lunch spot next time, if I wanted to sit outside.

Do not bother with this place. The customer service is shocking. The staff are slow and do not have any interest in serving customers. Shame because the place itself looks nice.

High calibre food served here .. you can always tell a well trained chef from just cooks... well worth it .. Whitebait is superb..

A proper chef who can adjust items on the menu to cater for allergies & still produce tasty food. The Cajun Whitebait starter was the tastiest I have had. Must be the east coast. Talking to another customer, they thought the battered cod meal was also excellent.
