This was a really special experience. We have been to Heston Blumenthal's Fat Duck in Bray and we preferred Gem 42. Similar innovation, creativity and evident pride and joy at a third of the price you have to pay in the home counties (we had the six course menu, every dish was interesting, tasty and ultimately filling, which isn't always the case with taster menus!). If you are curious about creative fine dining and haven't tried it I can't think of a better place to give it a go. Friendly, entertaining, unpretentious, surprising, genuine passion, surely a top restaurant in Wales at a surprising location - go soon before it moves to far pricier premises.

Wonderful! More than just a meal out - a complete experience! The food and wine pairing is to die for and they are so attentive, really a very special evening. We will definitely be back!

Quite outstanding We returned to Gem 42 last night – a trip from London just to eat there because we were so, so impressed with it last time.. Once again, it proved that this is one of the best restaurants in the UK. We had the £65 tasting menu and it was faultless with superb food. I dream of an egg yolk wrapped in scallop… If you are in any doubt about going – just don’t hesitate. It’s magnificent.

Literally one of the best dining experiences of our lives! Myself and my husband went to celebrate our anniversary and from the minute we walked in the door the service was impeccable! We booked when in Newport for a visit because of the excellent reviews. We had the shorter tasting menu with matching wines. We had an excellent evening, and will recommend and return. This was due to several factors. The ambience, relaxed, and classy, tables given space, even though it’s a small place. The service. Exceptional. From entrance to exit. We felt valued, important and welcome. The food. Brilliant. So tasty and imaginative. It was a delight to eat dishes I wouldn’t have the time or ability to cook myself. It felt a special occasion, it was a lovely experience and we hope to return. Certainly will be our first choice if in Newport again.

We have just had the finest meal of our lives, with every course an amazing combination of incredible flavour and technical skill. The team were brilliant, friendly, attentive, and rightly proud of what they deliver. We have travelled down from Edinburgh for the rugby this weekend and already thinking that we need to come back in 2 years time just for another meal here.

Came with my husband and father and Gem 42 exceeded all of our expectations. Amazing, original food, very attentive staff and lovely to have the chef and sommelier describe each dish and wine. We had the Chef Signature menu and paired wines and we will be talking about the dishes for quite some time! As others have said we feel sure Michelin will get this place in the book soon.

Amazing restaurant definitely is a GEM , the best food I have ever had the pleasure of eating, the presentation was out of this world, the chef brought the dish to your table, explained what part of Italy it was from, explained how to enjoy it at its best, amazing chef. My sister and I had a dinner at this gem of a restaurant, It is a gastronomic find and Michelin should seriously take this place in consideration!!!! We made our reservation and showed up at the appointed hour. The restaurant is only few minutes away from the train station “extremely convenient “ We were there for over 3 hours for our tasting menu ;Yes, that long as we want to savor every bite! Each course was plated , presented outstandingly and tasted amazingly good, ( what surprised both of us is that ;when food looks so good usually the taste comes in second place but here we can assure!!!! Quality of ingredients , flavours, and technical skills are top Michelin standards . We had certainly a grand time and a spectacular treat to end our stay in Wales.

We had an amazing evening and the overall experience was unforgettable. The standard of service, preparation, knowledge and presentation was quite something. The quality of ingredients the same exceptional standard. We opted for the wine pairing which was well worth it and demonstrated their passion for sustainable produce and known provenance of suppliers. I was blown away with the staff the cuisine the courses the skill the quality amd whole experience. I am awkward. I cant tolerate gluten and i do not eat potatoes rice pasta or noodles.
