I went last night to have a bite to eat at this deli and when I first came in I thought it was going to be full of hipsters but fortunately they were just getting food to take away. There was a queue with some people waiting for a table, the queue cleared quickly and I was really impressed with the decoration, it is very random and cool actually. The food was very tasty and perhaps presentation could be improved.

I don't really see why people make a big deal about this restaurant. We didn't order any smoked beef in part because I lived in NYC and have visited Montreal, so I have a high standard and didn't want to compare Gaby's with the best. Instead we ordered the daily special which was meatballs with rice and a lentil soup. The meal was ordinary at best, and the service was dreadfully unfriendly. The bathroom looked (but happily didn't smell) like China in the 1980s. The ambience was cramped and noisy thanks to one celebratory table. I'd advise anybody to give this place a pass.

I have passed by and bought a salt beef sandwich to take out before but just assumed it hit all the right spots with me personally. I took my 9yr old daughter in for lunch to eat in and while she ate her meal I asked if she wanted to try a bit of my sandwich - basically she ate my meal at a speed I've never seen before! The best bar none, honestly food that makes you feel like crying with joy

Gabbys Deli is easily missed on the main road north of Trafalgsr Sq. It is not posh or slick with an overbearing service. Rather, it is a popular eating house for people of all ages who enjoy excellent food which is aromatic, spicy, smokey - food you might find in in Turkey, Greece, or Morocco! It is primarily Middle Eastern. It is also very well priced and tastes fantastic. If you really aren’t adventurous, they will even do you some chips! Please don’t go there for that!

After the many positive reviews here our visit was disappointing. At a lunchtime it was busy and only one waiter had to deal with everyone. This might have been part of the problem. But several menu dishes were not available. We had lentil soup (a special that day) which was watery and tasteless (I mean, how hard is it to do lentil soup?). Smoked aubergine was ok but not seasoned and bland. The spinach and chicken again was OK but overcooked. A plate of olives and peppers ordered as a starter arrived after the main course. An apple strudel was doughy, not properly cooked and inedible. Portions were quite small. Maybe just an off day, but we won't be going back.

Opening in 1965, the year I went to college, Gaby's Deli has been feeding London ever since. Prices have, of course, risen over the years, but it still possible to get a good meal at a good value price here. Gaby's specialises in Salt beef, either in a sandwich or as a main course plate, Pastrami, Smoked salmon, Chicken and lamb kebabs, Mixed grill, Chicken livers, Falafel, Stuffed vine leaves and any number of different salads, Pittas and Wraps, and much much more. The Soups are delicious and nourishing (the Lentil soup particularly so), while the Stuffed peppers are a succulent treat. Close to many of the West End theatres, Gaby's is a great place for a pre- or post-show meal, or indeed at any time of the day for a coffee or a mint tea. Unpretentious and homely, it is, however, one of London's finest.

After travelling for 3 weeks in Eastern Europe I was craving a Kosher style deli corn beef or Montreal smoked meat sandwich. Gaby's Deli was the closest venue in downtown London I could find open on a Saturday. Don't judge the book by the cover. This restaurant is as authentic as it gets. Up your nose mustard on the table. A carrot juice and a sparkling water. All for £17.60. Rounded it off to 20 quid with a £2.40 tip much appreciated by the waitress and came home full and happy. The salt beef sandwich is absolutely delicious - some nice sandwich bread, a dollop of mustard and a good helping of salt beef which absolutely falls apart in your mouth. Top notch sandwich. At £9 it is a little on the expensive side though. What is odd is that a salt beef bagel is £5 and a salt beef baguette is £5.50. This place seems to have been run by elderly Iraqi brothers since the beginning of time. It is loved by many Londoners and indeed there was a big campaign a few years ago when it looked as if Gaby's was going to be forced to close in order for developers to wreck yet another part of the city. Its future is still, I think, uncertain. There is usually a very fast turnover so the service is fast and efficient rather than charming. The decor is non existent but everything is very clean. The food is "Mediterrean"/Israeli, freshly cooked and excellent. My favourite is their falafel in pitta. I really can't find a better description for the food than ''edible''. It is charmless food made without love, the microwave timer constantly ringing, delivering the falafels for which apparently this place is famous, but which in fact are just dry things, accompanied by tasteless, flat and garnishless hummous. The rest was from the same book: a spiceless, underseasoned, watery lentil soup, and a stuffed pepper accompanied by vegetables that had seen better times.Prices are low and quantities are large. Since I score taking into account the price category, the place attains a 3.I am all for supporting independent, historical places like this deli, and I went in really wanting to like it. But I think, from my own experience and the descriptions of some old customers, that it is now trading on the past: there is no sense of any real care or charisma on the part of the people running it.

Back to the 60's and a trip to the Middle East at the same time. Even the staff and the prices do not reflect the age we are living in. I speak for the falafels but they don't need any advocacy. They have got it from stars and celebs. It's like arriving to a different universe when stepping out to the West End streets after a nice meal.

Within easy reach of Whitehall and the West End, Gaby's is still the place for me when I want falafel. A box of 2 falafel on homemade humus with 3 salad choices is all you need to set you up for the day. And if not, there is a;ways a massive piece of baklava with your name on it!The prices are higher for a sit-down meal, but then again, the commercial rent must be astronomical so I don't begrudge them that. Long may it last :-)

I received great reports about Gaby's and looked forward to going there - the welcome was fabulous, the food was absurdly cheap and they were wonderful about wanting to eat within 20 minutes. The food was not too inspiring on this occasion but the others were regulars and they said we were just unlucky in our choices.

We used to come here years ago when in London and thought it had gone, so we were delighted to find it's still here, but less delighted with the food. It's a characterful little place, and the range of salads on display looks good. We each had a £10 plate of 7 salads. The portions are generous but everything tasted much the same and the falafel was as hard as rock. A small bottle of Merlot was enjoyable but seemed expensive at £5.50 - maybe that is a reasonable price in the West End!

Since the mid-sixties, this mediterranean quick-bite delicatessen snack bar has served delicious hummus, pitta bread, salads, drinks and hot meals to theatre-goers, actors, passing trade and everyone looking for a quick, nutritious and delicious pre-theatre snack.Basic tables and chairs, paintings and theatre posters, quick turnaround and convivial, unpretentious surroundings make this THE place to visit now that sandwich bars have turned into homogenised Macdonalds and Starbucks.Oh, and great value for money!

Gaby has been credited with introducing falafel to London in 1965. I still call in here periodically to eat his falafel, with hummus and salad in pitta bread. They offer a bargain takeaway box of 2 falafel, hummus and your choice of 3 of their home-salads which feature things like chick peas, lentils, beetroot, mushrooms, tomatoes, cucumber etc, On my visit today 2 American visitors were in raptures over the choice available! Glad to see they have restored the mixed carrot and orange juice to their menu. For meat-eaters, their salt beef sandwiches are legendary. Great location too, almost next to Wyndhams Theatre and close to Leicester Square tube station.

This used to be my go-to place to eat when I was in that part of town, but I won't be going any more. Instead of lovely juicy, thickly sliced, slightly fatty salt beef like my mother used to make, one member of my group was served fine slivers of dried-up beef that I would have ejected from my fridge days before. Then there was the goulash! This traditional mittel European dish was served with - guess what! Pilau rice! I don't know if there are new owners and if they are Indian but if that's the case, they should give up on Gaby's and open an Indian restaurant elsewhere. Either that or learn to make the traditional mid-European and middle Eastern food that Gaby's used to be famous for! And on top of that, the service was appalling! I'm glad my brother who introduced me to Gaby's many years ago is no longer alive to see what Gaby's has become. He would be appalled!

Three of us had lunch here. Spinach and Chicken with rice was unexpectedly spicy; 7 hot salads were good and so was smoked salmon bagel with cold potato salad.

We went last night after watching a play. Really surprised that we could still get a meal at that time but no problem. Very tasty and great value. Will return.

Went there last Sunday with a friend, we both remember it from years ago when it was a great cafe with wonderful food - all gone! It's hard to decide if the service or the food were worse: it took over one hour for our order to be completed. We had ordered 4 things: carrot juice (came 10 minutes after ordering), hot chocolate (20 minutes from order), soup (25 minutes), falafel with salad (mainly red cabbage) in a dry pitta bread (one hour after ordering, and had to be reminded several times, no apology, only "yes, it's coming"). We left five minutes after I had paid, and on the way out the same man who had taken my money, asked me if I had paid! Yes, £16.60 for 4 items, not cheap. Very sad: used to be such a great place but no longer so under new ownership. Avoid... or buy Gabys and make it great again!

This deli is conveniently located near the Gallery of Art and Portrait Gallery. The lentil soup was good, the salad was very mediocre. The service was just ok. I requested lemon and even though it wasn't busy I had to wait a very long time for a very thin half slice of lemon. I would suggest this place as a quick place to eat rather than eating at nearby chain restaurants.

I used to come here years ago and it hasn't changed a bit. So glad this gem of a cafe survived the recent threat from developers. Popped in for lunch, the salads are as delicious as ever (and the thespians as flamboyant - it's always good for people-watching/listening). Very affordable, real food. One of the West End's best-kept secrets. Long may it continue.

At one point this place - which is part amazing food - part national treasure, was threatened with closure due to plans to change Charing X. The argument here is that London is so expensive that only big corporations can afford to abide in its central space. Of course, places like Gaby's are vital to the hubris, buzz and character of London. It is so well loved that a campaign was drummed up to save it from the hands of planners. So then, the salt beef sarnies of infamy, the wonderful salads and walls full of theatrical nostalgia, live on to fight and live another day. Don't miss this place. Go, and go often.

If you are looking for good, reasonably priced food near Leicester Square - then this is the place. As long as you don't mind the simple decor and squeezing in to some of the tables - this is a great spot at any time of the day. Pastrami, salt beef ( the sandwiches are heaven on a plate )and falafel are very much a speciality here but they have a large and varied menu that would suit all tastes. Service is pleasant and efficient and you never feel rushed even though it is a busy popular spot. When we go to any show or film in the area, we always end up here as we have not found anywhere better for the price.

My friend and I ate here one evening. It was empty when all surrounding places were busy, this should of alerted us. He ordered the mixed grill. It was a joke. It turned up and it looked foul. 3x old pieces of warmed up chicken cubes and a piece of compressed meat that we couldn't even identify. Some salad which had a brownish coat accompanied it. We laughed in disbelief. We asked the waiter what was going on. She apologised and looked really embarrassed and removed the offensive plate. We ordered 2 x salt beef sandwiches. We waited for 2 x stale sandwiches and some old crusty mustard. It was poor to say the least. I paid at the counter. The owner didn't even have he courtesy to stop his phone call and just took my money without any direct eye contact. Clearly desperate for every £ he can extract for his woeful food. Don't eat here unless you have a great sense of humour and absolutely no sense!

Simple cafe setting or take away in a tub or pitta. Loads of choice for vegetarians and vegans. The falafel are amazing. Been a favourite for decades. Still wonderful.

I've eaten here since 1991, and the falafel has never changed, and it a truly awesome experience, they also do very good no vegetarian food, a fiver for a falafel comes with optional chilli sauce, I can honestly say, I have travelled the world but this falafel is the best I have ever tasted..

Fantastic felafel, great vegetarian options. This place is my favourite place to get lunch on work break. Its charm is that is that its just great food - coffee not as good - and is run by very kind people. The sitting area isn't made atmospheric by music and is dimly lit, for me this setting is somewhat of an unassuming sanctuary in crazy old London. I just wish I could smoke in here, next to the photos of Gaby with matt Damon lol. Pecan pie is great.

It all looks OK but service is poor and the bar food served is cheap frozen food at prices that should require a far better quality. There are far better options in London

I used to love this place, but haven't been for nearly 10 years. I'm glad to see it hasn't changed too much, but with the downside that it is now apparently owned by BrewDog. Luckily, it appears they let them continue without having to follow the "taproom by numbers" you get out of most BrewDog bars, so not only does it have it's own look, but there is a much more interesting selection of beers. It was easy enough to get a seat on a Saturday afternoon, which is always a bonus in a decent location like this.

Fui a desayunar. Mucho a mucho. Este lugar no es para mi. Buen café sin embargo.
