Francos in Scottish Borders

Read the reviews about this restaurant and we were not disappointed. The restaurant was quiet and we were given a seat at the window with a beautiful view of the river. The service was excellent and friendly. The food was delicious, I had the lasagne which was delicious and my husband had the chicken which was equally delicious. We both had dessert I had the tirramaso and my husband cannaloni which were delicious definitely would recommend this restaurant.

As a family of three, we have eaten here several times and have always found the food and staff amazing. We had dinner here just over a week ago and it was lovely. The bruschetta is very tasty as is the Penne alla Lorna. My partner had the seafood spaghetti which he said was also lovely. Our daughter had the spaghetti bolognese and choc ice cream afterwards. The atmosphere was very friendly and busy. I have had the beef stroganoff in the past and it is also very yummy. We will continue to come back. Well worth every penny.

Lovely small restaurant with great food reasonably priced. Great ambiance with cycle related theme. Specials were nice and added value to the main menu

You can tell when it’s going to be good as you enter and it’s busy with locals and families. Managed to get a table and was glad we did. Service was professional and perfectly timed between starter and main. The food was fresh and tasty, with a range of pastas, pizzas and meat dishes. Price was cheaper than we expected. All in all a clean, well run, Italian.

Went for dinner with a group of friends when mountain biking in the area. Can't say we'll be back. The food was pretty basic - my friend had a prawn starter and left most of the prawns as they still felt frozen, one had a pizza that wasn't great either with mushrooms on top that were pretty much still raw, another had garlic mushrooms that again were pretty underdone. Everything just seemed rushed and not great quality. The fish in my seafood pasta didn't seem particularly fresh but it was the best dish of a bad bunch. The other issue was the attitude of the owner. I ordered a large beer and he tried to persuade me that I needed to order the special wine instead and it honestly felt a little sexist. He also seemed to get angry at the waitress when she was generous when giving me parmesan cheese on my pasta and his general demeanour felt very cold and short tempered. The wait staff themselves were lovely and trying their best. I feel like it is one of those places that the owner always thinks he knows best and treats the locals well but doesn't care about visitors.

Friendly staff and excellent pizza! To start I ordered the ham with prosciutto which was really good and my partner ordered the garlic bread. For the main course my partner ordered a pizza calzone with pulled pork and I ordered a gluten free version of the pizza Sorrentina. Every bite was SO GOOD. You couldn’t even tell that it was gluten free. It was that good! It was a shame we were stuffed after that because the desserts looked good too.

Called with a friend during a recent cycling trip. I'm coeliac and they offered gluten free pasta and pizza. I had a pizza and the base was excellent, could barely tell the difference between mine and my friend's regular pizza.

Had a very mixed experience. I had the calimari and special sea bass. The sea bass was phenomenal, delicious and light. The calimari - not so much. I think it just hadn't been cooked enough, and the batter wasn't crisp. The chilli was also way too strong, even dipped in the cream sauce. Would definitely go again, but certainly choose different things. The staff wre lovely and friendly

We ordered a takeaway at 6:30. They said it would be an hour. At 8 pm we phoned and the phone was off the hook so we couldnt get through. They showed up at 8:44. Two hours and 14 minutes after we placed our order. We tried to call over 100 times….. they answered once. We sent them away, we lost our appetite, my husband and my daughter went without food tonight, glad my other daughter and I ordered an Indian! Which was fantastic by the way and half an hour earlier than they said they would be! Thank you to shukria…..

Staff are friendly, the young man who took our order was so lovely, but I found the manager a little intense. There's an italian time scale and there's waiting too long to be served, if you're wanting quick you may need to take matters into your own hands. The menu has all the classics, it's familiar and comforting. £13 for an antipasto, that had chorizo(??) a selection of meats, a few pearls of mozzarella that spent too much time out their water, some grilled aubergine - no bread to be seen. I would have ordered it with, but I didn't know I had to. Why would we eat meats without bread...it's not a thing. Pasta Lorna was described as having spicy sausage, it was cut up chorizo again, looked like bacon and tasted like an amatriciana. It was a great wee plate but the pasta was a little too on the al dente side, I like it that way, but it's not for everyone. I also feel that £8 for 3 tiny scoops of ice cream with nuts and chocolate sauce is frightening. And to the management - not everyone wants to drink espresso or espresso liquor after eating.

Simple well cooked tasty Italian fare, pizza, pasta, chicken. All served by a friendly team for whom nothing was too much trouble.

Popped into Franco's for some pizza and it was absolutely delicious, the decor was outstanding with Italian themes and loved the Napoli football collage at the top of the stairs. More importantly the pizza was absolutely delicious, an excellent base with the best toppings.

It's a place for cheap family eats Slightly concerned by the tatty specials sheets and focaccia which resembles a slice of pizza base but if you order pasta for the kids, pizzas for others and I'm sure you will see clean places Very nice staff

A last minute choice and we had fairly low expectations but they knocked it out of the park. The waitress was very helpful and the food: garlic bread, ravioli, tagliatelle, tiramisu and house wine were all excellent. Good food and inexpensive. A real surprise.

We are in Peebles frequently due to family living there, but that also means we don't often have an excuse to eat out. We have passed Franco's many times and wondered what it would be like. Well the time finally came to find out one Sunday evening in mid-September.From the start it was clear that they have taken a serious approach to Covid risk-assessment with clear signage requiring face coverings to be worn whilst moving around the restaurant, sanitiser available, and also they have turned a number of tables into displays of wine etc so as to increase space between tables. The staff all wear face coverings and are careful not to linger too near your table for any longer than necessary.The service was friendly and attentive, and the staff were knowledgeable about both the food and wine menu which led us to try some excellent recommendations. The food itself was just gorgeous and my steak off the specials board was absolutely precisely cooked medium-rare as I'd asked.There was everything to love about a meal here and nothing to fault. It was really lovely and we will be back the next time we have an excuse.

My husband and I had a meal here tonight and it was first class. Franco himself helped me with the menu as I was unsure what to have. My husband had stuffed mushrooms with pate for starters and beef stroganoff for main. I had garlic bread followed by chicken escalope with tagliatelle and carbonara sauce that wasn’t even on menu but Franco suggested it for me. We then had Tartuffe Nero for sweet. All delicious. Will definitely return here next time we are in Peebles.

My boyfriend and I visited last night as we were gifted a meal from a friend. He had been before but it was my first time as I’m from out of town but I was blown away by how lovely it was! Real italian pizza made to perfection and a really nice cozy atmosphere. Everyone was very friendly, especially our waiter Finley who was really welcoming and didn’t mind at all when I wanted my aperol spritz made a certain way, and even made sure we had a table by the window. Whilst staying in Peebles we visited Francos, slightly unsure of what to expect. Even in these strange times due to Covid (!!) everything was more than we expected. The staff were very attentive and the food was very authentic! My daughter who is a pizza connoisseur (!!) said it was the best pizza she had ever had!!!!! The pasta dishes were lovely and the puddings very tasty too!Our meals were so nice we booked another sitting 48 hours later!! Definitely worth a visit.Oh and on a Covid subject....all the staff wore masks and requested gel used on entry which is a lot more than we can say for other places visited! It made us fell very safe and looked after. Well done!! We will return!

We visited on a Friday evening and had a beautiful meal. Everything was freshly prepared including homemade desserts, the chocolate and pistachio profiteroles were beautiful. The pizzas were awesome with perfect dough to toppings ratio - important stuff! The wine list was comprehensive and everything was good value.We’ll be sure to visit again next time we’re in Peebles.

We enjoyed our meal although there was a table of 13 family members which were very noisy and did make our stay a bit uncomfortable. No trace details taken except name for booking. The wonderful Francos has never been a let down! The food is always fantastic, from the true Italian style pizzas to the weekly speciality dishes, there is something for everyone. Food is always freshly prepared and freshly cooked, but you are never kept waiting long! The wine is lush! We tend to go with the wine of month now because Franco certainly knows what he’s talking about when it comes to the wine! The staff are just truly wonderful, they create and maintain a “buzz” about the place, always wearing a genuine smile and always giving you the very best service, nothing is ever too much trouble!All this, along with the authentic playlist and traditional Italian decor and layout, Francos is a true taste of Italy here in the Scottish Borders. Their food, wine and hospitality is second to none and we recommend this place highly to all! Enjoy! x

Peebles has some good evening meal options for couples, this isn't one of them.First visit to Franco's after years of walking past it on our regular monthly visits to Peebles. Have never been tempted to venture in but....wet snow and rain all day caused us to change our reservation at the Horseshoe Inn (Eddlestone) to Franco's on a February Saturday (8pm). Consequently, we ended up at the worst table in the house - a small corner table, each of us at right angles and looking at the corner walls. Bad opening, but ...We opted for beers (£3.60 for 330ml) as the wines are overpriced. One serving of parmigiana di melenzane [sic] to start - incredibly sour with the thinnest saddest aubergines, altogether quite unpleasant (£7.50) Followed by two bowls of under-cooked penne salmone - bland and chalky (£10.50). Total bill £35.70 before service. In hindsight, maybe we should have tried the pizza as so many others seem to do when visiting but we'll probably never know as we have no plans to return.

Every time when I’m in Peebles I’m enjoying a pizza at Francos. Great place affordable prices and a cozy atmosphere. Toilet rather cold.
