Havent been here for a while. Food used to be excellent last time we went for a roast dinner it was nearly cold having waited half an hour for it. Used to be a guy running it full of character and a comprehensive menu that has all changed. Its over the road from us but rather get in the car and find somewhere else

This pub has just been bought and is now,a,free house after being a green king pub ..The food here now is very local serving fish and meat from a very local dealer and was of a great quality ..especially my Cornish pasty a rare choice on a pub menu so very different ..we was not rushed and was allowed loads of time between starters and main meal and able to order started first then main meal later when we were ready rather than the rush rush of more conventional big chain pubs Very lovely and friendly staff and would definitely return ..a good experience all round

Went to The Fox and Hounds today and had a lovely roast dinner with the Family. Food was cooked really well and came out piping hot, 2 choices of meat served with lashings of vegetables, roasties, Yorkshire’s, stuffing and most importantly thick gravy, price was excellent value for money and the food tasted great. The atmosphere and staff are great too. We will definitely be coming back soon.

Worst experience. Ordered a salad and all day breakfast - took 45 minutes. Asked bartender to chase it and she said "the chef is plating it up" then waited a further 10minutes and still no sign of food. In the meantime the football was put on the TV and the speakers were blaring. The couple sat next to us were also unhappy with the volume so I asked if it could be turned down. Response - "I've turned it down as much as I can" volume was still too loud. Returned back to my seat to and then 1 of 2 meals arrived, my salad with a side of long black hair. Decided to get a refund for everything. Worst service received from the bar maid and I told her this too. I would strongly advise to avoid this pub at all costs to avoid encountering long waits for food, and poor customer service.

Our group regularly meets at the Fox and Hounds for lunch and because of staff changes it has been a bit hit or miss recently. However for the Christmas lunch they really pulled out all the stops, room and tables nicely decorated. Food was hot and the young waitress served all the plates for 40 people very well. A few people thought there was too much on the plate but most of the members were well satisfied . Well done Fox and Hounds.

Me and my other half have been coming here on and off for years.. and we’ve never been disappointed with the food until today. All Day Breakfast is a good price of £6.99, and when it came out, it wasn’t presented very well but a good portion of each different food. However, the bacon tasted off?! Never tasted bacon like that before.. made us feel unwell. Toast and beans were cold, eggs were too oily. It’s a shame because we love coming here for a decently priced dinner. We didn’t complain, but didn’t finish our meals. Can’t fault the service of the barmaid, she was lovely.. but definitely need to look into this. May leave it a while before returning..

Right from the start when I made the advance booking through to actually having our meals, the help and service from Chris could not be faulted. I believe that he is fairly new to the pub and a definite asset. Drinks came quickly, the meals understandably less so. However the meals all came to our three tables within a short time span rather than some finishing their meals whilst others waited for theirs. Obviously an organised kitchen!. The food was good and not too pricey. Would we come again? Definitely yes. Thanks too to Richard behind the bar.

He estado aquí varias veces antes mientras visitaba a mi hermano que vive cerca.

FIRST IMPRESSIONSMy wife and I often go out for lunch during the week. We had an afternoon appointment to the east of Bedford in the afternoon and decided to 'pop in' to this establishment. A long time ago we used to live in the estate to the rear. The pub has changed and is no longer the tired 'local.' The interior has been tastefully decorated and the who establishment is now one area. It is pleasant.STAFFWe have now visited on two occasions and on both the staff have been very friendly and welcoming. The service was good and again pleasant.FOODIt is 'pub fare' from a standard menu but the food we ordered was well cooked. I had a steak which on Monday to Wednesday is only £6.49 with sauces being £1 extra. [ The remainder of the week it is a pound more. The steak was an excellent cut which was well cooked and came with onion rings, tomato, mushrooms, peas and chips. My wife had the cottage pie, which she also said was well cooked. The beers seemed to be on offer for we only paid £1.99 for a pint of IPA.OVERALLThis is a pub and the food selection is what you would expect but, and it is a big BUT, this establishment is good at what it serves and we will return, indeed we already have!.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

It was my dubious pleasure to partake in the Christmas lunch on 25th December 2013 at the Fox and Hounds near Bedford’s rugger club. It had actually been recommended to me by a barmaid at The Bull on Bedford’s London Road since the latter was fully-booked. And I made the mistake of taking her up on her suggestion, one which I had thought she’d meant to be genuinely helpful - though now I suspect it was a cruel and immature jape aimed at undermining a rival.Ordinarily I would have paid almost £40 for the meal there, though outside the Fox and Hounds its Christmas dinners were being advertised ‘from under £10’. But when I pointed this out on Christmas Eve I was offered a reduction to £30. Sadly, as it was to turn out, that £30 was about £30 too much. Or, put it another way, if I could live Christmas Day over again then I wouldn’t have eaten lunch there - even if they’d paid me £30 to do so. Nothing could compensate me for spoiling my day as they did.It started well enough. If you ignore the fact that they pointed my dessert-spoon the wrong way around (you might laugh, but setting a table is hardly rocket-science and the same people are being entrusted with your food hygiene). The first course, ‘mushroomS’ stuffed with Stilton, was actually pretty good. Even though, if we’re going to quibble, there was only one mushroom. It was accompanied by garlic bread and was well-garnished. It looked good on the plate. To be fair to them it was absolutely acceptable and only a spoiled-rotten foodie removed from the real world would have any complaint about it. And they’d need their legs slapped. But that first course, good as it was, only served as a cruel contrast to the appalling main-course. I’d been encouraged to try the 4-bird roast rather than the turkey option (the salmon was ‘off’ and I would have plumped for the steak had it not been Jesus’s birthday). What I seemed to have got then was a dish (or I think they call it a ‘plate of food’ now to be trendy) which was prepared by a totally different pair of hands to those involved in the first course. (I am assuming that somebody with a working pair of hands was on duty, and not the equivalent of an untrained foot-artist.) That 4-bird roast was, I suspect, not anything prepared on the premises but some cheaply-mass-produced-excuse-for-food that they’d bought in and warmed up in a microwave. It was conspicuously tasteless (whatever the 4 birds were they all tasted little better than spam), unappetising and looked awful on the plate. But it had serious competition in the form of almost-wholly-uncooked parsnip batons, sprouts that had somehow had every last vestige of taste entirely extracted from them in a way which I had not thought possible, undercooked cubes of roast potatoes, and a sort of messy medley of other veg (for Christ’s sake they didn’t even push the boat out to give us mash) topped off with a sad-looking mass-produced excuse for a Yorkshire pudding (as a Yorkshireman I can assure you, dear reader, that making real ones is simplicity itself and anybody who cannot should not be allowed to eat food never mind cook it). And the gravy. It was all an utter insult to guests. Wars have started over less.Let’s put this in perspective. I have eaten better school dinners than that. I’ve eaten better compo rations when I was in the army. I’ve cooked better meals on a camping-stove. And, believe me, I could cook a better meal on a candle. It was truly dire. I left much of it despite being notionally hungry (though food like that certainly had dampened my body’s wish to go on functioning). And this was before I got to the dessert.I had been idly amusing myself (it seems to be an uniquely British trait to meet disaster with black humour) by texting friends and jesting about whether it would be possible for whoever was in the kitchen at the Fox and Hounds to now generate an even worse pudding than the main course. Frivolity apart I had not thought it possible. How, I asked myself, could anyone ruin a Christmas pudding? Yet remarkably they did it. And they did it in spades. The triumph of inadequacy which was plonked in front of me was two slices of what looked like the sort of reject Xmas pudding they’d only try to sell at a ‘pound-shop’ in a ‘reduced to clear’ bin. My guess is that there were those two slices, each being less than half an inch thick, because the ‘chef’ (or excuse for one, doubling as a waiter) had surmised that I was not entirely enamoured by the previous course. I’d met his request for feedback on the main course with a forced ‘OK’, you see. So he’d treated me to two slices, no doubt thinking he was spoiling me rotten. These were unappetisingly abandoned in the middle of a huge white cheap porcelain bowl, and almost totally submerged by ordinary (very ordinary) custard. No white sauce. No rum. No brandy. No garnish like holly. No flame. No attempt to make it look edible even if it wasn’t. And, let’s be right, no Christmas pudding. Because what I was given didn’t equate to that. One small spoonful confirmed the truly abysmal quality of the pudding. And, with that, I stood, put on my coat, and left without a word. There were other diners who had already been very noticeably leaving a lot on their plates, but I felt that publicly telling the management what I thought of their fare was unfair on other guests (and could lead to blows). So I just went. Without waiting for the rest, though more of this tripe was promised. That’s something I have never previously done in my life (and I’m 57). Reviews like this can damage businesses. And rightly so. If such establishments cannot provide capable chefs and invest in decent ingredients then they should be shut down. To serve such a poor meal at any time would be bad, but to serve it on Christmas Day to customers who have paid a lot for it is absolutely inexcusable. Prats like these make Fawlty Towers look professional by comparison.Paul Dunwell, Bedford

I am also considering booking the private function room for Christmas lunch this year,.This was a most refeshing experience, with old fashioned high standards, and courtesey.Claudia and David should do very well if my visit was anything to judge by. WELL DONE.
