Food at The Temperance Inn in South Lakeland

Friendly staff, many folks across 2 nights complaining of late food, I ordered food on day two of my 2 visits, £18 fish and chips, great fish though size wise more of a large fish finger than a decent sized fish, poor value overall letting the quality of food down.

We were a group of 5 and wanted to find somewhere for dinner - unfortunately Ambleside was busy and we found a table here eventually, but I wish we hadn’t! £18 for a distinctly average/worse than average scampi and chips - for that cost I’d expect quality, or at least quantity, but it wasn’t either! My brother ordered a pie and chips for £20 and it was clearly a frozen effort and still cold. Overpriced and disappointing - felt like it’s designed for tourists who will only visit once - it worked as we won’t be back!

Nice place for a drink with a good range of seating and friendly staff. Let down by one of us wanting a snack and ordering £4.50 chips for the table. What arrived was nice but it was literally ONE potato! I couldn’t believe it- why be so stingy with a 10p spud and risk a bad review like this?

Ordered food at 8.45, last food order advertised at9pm. Took my money and eagerly awaited. 9.30 pm asked at bar when my food would be coming. I was told my order was lost in the lift, and the chef had left so sorry we will have to refund you. Tough luck! Awful service…. Avoid!

Tried to charge me £45 for two casseroles (£12 x 2) and a pint and a half of beer. Reduced to £33.30 when queried. £6.50 for a pint of poor XB! (I' asked for and kept the receipt) Meal was small, but tasty. Wont be going back.

We tried to call ahead to book a table but we’re greeted with a recorded message outlining that they did not take booking and that tables weee allocated on a first come first served basis. Buoyed by this we decided to arrive early at 6:44 to ensure we would get a table… When we arrived we were initially ignored by both waiting staff. OK. We managed to get their attention eventually and were informed that they had no tables. We enquired about an empty table that we could see, and were told that it was reserved for hotel guests only. OK. We asked how long the wait would be, and we’re told that there would not be any tables this evening. OK. Our conversation was overhead by two people having a drink at one of the tables. They very graciously offered us their table. We very grateful and accepted the table. The waiters decided that they were not happy with this and refused to either serve us or even look at us. We walked out in disgust after 15 minutes of waiting. What a shame that this place is let down by such rude waiting staff. I really hope that the owners discover how poor their staff attitudes are and so something about it. Poor show!

Don't order the Venison meatballs and crusty bread. Took less than 10 minutes from ordering at bar to being brought to table. Venison meatballs were like rubber and crusty bread was rock hard aka stale.

We went to order and the barman told us there weren’t doing pizza so we had to order something that we weren’t that bothered about then saw pizzas on the pass!! Cost us like £4 more than we wanted to spend Then there was about an hour wait which was ridiculous. The meatballs were very bland not worth £16 at all My chicken supreme was nice though They said the manager would be over to sort something for us.. never came so no real apology for the extremely long wait The waitress was very pleasant and she was embarrassed about it. Ruined most of our evening to be honest very disappointing

£18 for a double cheese burger which looked like they had sliced a normal burger in two, to make two waffer thin skinny discs and chucked in a bun, The pizza was a rip off as well.

Nice atmosphere, the Spanish lady behind the bar is a credit to the place , I had stayed here when it first opened so called for drinks with friends, decor stylish would have sat in beer garden but it was raining

The food was tasty and plentiful. Service was excellent although it was a pretty busy Saturday night.

We keep walking past this one. Decided to pop in , only for drinks , great location , great for pooches, friendly staff , food menu looked good will try next time back in lakes , my dog Bradley enjoyed it too he waited patiently for the treat he was promised 😂😂

Popped in here on our first day in the Lakes for a snack. We had chicken subs, chips and an ale. The prices aren’t cheap but nowhere in the Lakes is. We really enjoyed our food, especially the chips, I would have ordered two if I had known how crispy they were going to be. Very fast service and friendly lady who served us.

Ordered a pepsi large and Pepsi small drink, got charged 1 large 'PM lemonade 16oz' at £3.00 and a 'PM pepsi max 16oz' at £3.00. When I went to queried this, the bar tender fobbed me off saying the actual price for a 16oz diet pepsi should have been £3.90 so he 'under charged me 90p'. Disgusted seeing as it's same volume but overcharged and its a watered down syrup. Food was ridiculously priced too. A rip off, a sausage and mash and fish and chips with ripped off drinks came to £38. Found out later much better pubs around. Please avoid unless you want to be ripped off. Shame on you!

Decent food and a great pint in really nice surroundings. Very impressed with the refurb and friendly staff. We will return when we are in the area again.

We ate in here for the first and last time on August Bank Holiday weekend. I ordered Roast Chicken dinner which at £16 I though was expensive. Roast potatoes seemed like Aunt Bessies, parsnips (2) were hard broccoli (1 stem) could not get my knife through, two bits of carrots, 1 chicken breast and a very soggy yorkshire pudding - not a good experience for me. My husband had fish and chips which was very average - again quite expensive

big thanks to Morgan and Ross for some fantastic food tried about 5 different mains on the menu everyone just as good as the other. Advertising street food sounds a bit like burger and chips to us older end but could not be further from the truth. Ok may be a little expensive but so is all of Ambleside. Well worth a try. Also thanks to Gurs and Rhys for service at the bar

Went for lunch in Temperance Inn. Empty when arrived, given warm welcome, placed full order and drinks. The food is good, but knocked off points for slow service. Staff welcoming customers but paying attention to existing customers. During our meal, it didn't get very bury, possibly around 10-12 other customers. Ready to get OUT!.

Lovely refurb at a popular town centre bar. Staff were friendly and service was prompt. We only stayed for one drink as it was quite expensive, even by Lake District standards.

Called in for a couple of drinks overpriced (must be paying for the refurb) and i think locals were charged different prices for same drinks ?? will we be back NO

Popped in to see the new refurb, nice inside but Ale awful. Website states ‘Here at The Temperance Inn, we take our beer seriously – it’s a big passion of ours, and we love to see the smiles on our guest’s faces as they sip...

Not a brilliant experience. Our table felt like it was surrounded by chairs (table number 2), the table was wobbly and needs some attention. Food was expensive, and average. The saving grace was that the staff were really friendly and very helpful.

Excellent, friendly service. Delicious food , and good range of modern cuisine, including many delicious vegetarian options and Generous servings . Lovely ale.
