The fish is very delicious, we are very pleased, everyone should go, thank you very much, Those who want to eat delicious fish should go,

fish was sold as if it had been festering in the sun for days after being caught. just eat justified this by saying each restaurant have their own unique style of cooking. they've no intention to refund and is clear they don't care about those who keep them in business.

Ordered fish and chips and got cod so small it was basically a fish finger and chips with so few chips I could count them. And a £5 sausage. How is a saveloy £5? It would appear the local chippy has got itself confused with a Michelin starred fine dining experience taster menu

We used to order from here on a regular basis, however the last 23 times the food has not been good, dry tasteless chips, overcooked chicken and sausages that have been sitting in the heater for way too long. Not the cheapest fish and chips either £30 for two chips chicken and fish bites. Won’t be coming back here.

One of the best fish and chips in potters bar, food came out steaming and fresh, big portions for the cod and very crispy 😋. The staff were very friendly especially the chef Yilmaz. 👍

I ordered and they messed the order up I rung them to complain about there mess up on order and they were rude to me on the phone when I said I'd like for them to bring out my nans order correct and cooked sausages that aren't undercooked and they were rude to me and hung up the phone instead of being professional and fixing the mistake ! I won't buy again from here and I recommend no one else does cause their terrible service! I am also pregnant so this mistake of undercooked meat is not very good for me and baby and there was no apology for this at all!

My husband had cod and chips and I had the burger and chips the food was piping hot when it was delivered cooked to perfection and so so tasty. I even phoned the shop to say how lovely it was and to thank them. Definitely we will be ordering again

Lady in there wasn’t very friendly, in fact grumpy. Not that helpful. Every time I spoke to her she almost grunted. Wouldn’t bother again. We ate in, served in takeaway containers and when asked for a cup of tea, they don’t do it. But menu stated they do.

What an amazing fish and chips! My son had calamari and chips and I had cod and chips, the fish and calamari was freshly fried and an amazing customer service. Would recommend!

Very very Dissapointing Fish, obviously the two pieces of fish had been cooked much earlier, it was very hot and so I assume it had been re-fried so the fish was quite tough, and the batter was very hard, a very poor meal for £24.00

They didn't have any sweet potatoe fries. Instead of calling and telling us they replaced them with 2 sausages and skinny fries. Only partly good for a veggie and pescatarian

Last time I use this fish shop! Burnt stale chips how hard is it to cook a fresh chip. Worst of all though is the so called cod! This isn't cod, cod should be full of flavour with nice big succulent flakes this was a greasy wet tasteless lump of soggy grease. I'm almost sure this isn't cod and if it is its been frozen. I understand its hard for the fish industry atm but omg this was beyond bad. I never normally leave reviews because everyone needs to make a living but this is appalling and downright deceiving. I urge everyone to avoid this local chippy like the plauge I know I will.

Our driver was very friendly giving the snow and terrible roads definitely pleasant and friendly. Our food was also really lovely.

Fish and chips were excellent. Fresh fish and loads of chips. Delivery was only slightly late and the delivery man was gracious enough to apologise. I'd certainly order again.

Beautiful cod cooked to perfection

Have come here many times and used to be great… now there is an issue every time. They recently charged me for the food forgot one fish and when I went back charged me another £9 for a meal they forgot and made it my fault. Horrible service and soggy undercooked chips (which were cold after Waiting another 20 minutes for my fish) and the mushy peas were essentially green water…

Thought I would try this take away again after a bad experience here , no change at The Helmsman, reheated , dried out, poor quality fish, old oil, fish had strange taste, others served before me with same meal, I will never go here again, should have realised that only the name has changed, the food was still awful and expensive

“Fresh chips, 5 minutes”. Fresh chips always worth a little wait. I returned ,chips ready, drove home. But these were Not freshly cooked , possibly left overnight from lunch time. Yet had waited 5 minutes for these.There had been an accident on Mutton lane otherwise I would have returned. I did ring , “sorry, come and collect some fresh ones now” . We will not be using the Helmsman again. Would you?

We generally love the vegan items on this menu, however our battered banana blossom was simply revolting tonight! Last time we had it, the banana blossom was white/grey in colour and a pretty convincing fish alternative, but this time it was all brown in colour, was tough and tasted really foul. Not sure what happened but we’re super disappointed.

Got takeaway home , only to find out they had messed up order. vegan chicken burger was a beef burger. Returned to shop only to be lied to about the order and when questioned further they still wouldn't admit their mistake. The chef showed us an unopened box that the burger came from while covering the label with his hand. Eventually they begrudgingly made a vegan chicken burger for us. we never got an apology, only a smirk from the girl on the till and ended leaving the shop wishing we never went there in the first place. Will not be going there again.

Do not order through just eat, a kids meal is advertised as £6.95 on their website however through just eat they charge £9.95!!! For four nuggets some chips and a can of drink!! A pie is advertised as £3.95 however ordering through just eat it the actual cost is £5.10!! A sausage is £3.50 which is a £1 more than advertised on the Helmsman website so in total £5.15. I contacted the restaurant and was told it was because just eat use their own drivers now!! I have also contacted just eat for their comment

You can't really sell your kids scampi meal as 6 pieces and then send 4, that's not what I ordered. If the meal is only 4 pieces then you should have stated this on the menu rather than trying to secretly scrimp and save to boost your profits.

The price change vs product change is just not acceptable. I used to order 1 portion of vegan sausages that was 2.99 and came with 2 sausages. Now it is 3.95 for just 1 single sausage. I could make 8 vegan sausages at home with that price using richmond sausages. I don't understand the price increase when all they've done is lowered the quantity. The banana blossom smelt awful. I've just had a tooth extraction, I'm being 100% serious when I say the banana blossom smelt the same as that the extraction site tastes. The banana blossom had a lot of weird powdery substance, so it was even more inedible. I've ordered from this place a bunch of times, always forgiving their constant problems. I've forgiven the amount of times they've forgotten the vegan savaloy, I've forgiven the time driver was extremely rude and I've forgiven the times they've swapped unavailable items for items I didn't want instead of calling first or offering partial refund for item not in stock. However i won't forgive the fact they think it is acceptable to put the price up while removing quantity. Banana blossom is the bin. Chips mostly hard, not soft. Curry sauce was only good thing, actually really tasty. Last time I'll ever order from them.

Ordered at 5.42pm food didn’t arrive until 7.37 almost 2 hours later called the shop 3 x who told us it was 10 minutes away very bad customer service. Won’t be using again. Food is cold Refund us immediately

The last time I had fish from here, it has been good and fresh. However I am not sure what I could say about this time as the savoloy and chips have been cold and fish has been really oily. Not only that, in the middle of the night my belly started hurting really bad and I had to go to the bathroom after I just had this food in the evening.

Quality food all hot and fresh and the driver was friendly and prompt

Firstly, the delivery driver knocked on the door and walked off. My sister answered the door 20 seconds after the knock and shouted "hello". He came back after a minute, my sister asked if he was looking for the house number and he was extremely moody. He had an off mood as soon as the door opened making my sister feel very uncomfortable. This guy refused to give the food, until we could prove to him that this was the address. The number of the house is at the front of the garage, so if he looked when on the road, he would have seen. After rushing around trying to find a letter, he handed the food over 5 minutes after originally knocking and walked off. Now the food, everything was okay but this is the second time I've ordered vegan savaloy and recieved vegan sausage. Happy they now use vegan richmond instead of that mushy brand though. They still haven't updated the fact halloumi is NOT VEGAN.

Really enjoy this place. Chips are great. Lots of yummy vegan options. My only complaint is that some things STILL say vegan when they're not, like halloumi.

If you order burgers, make sure to choose the toppings. Burgers won’t come with the toppings mentioned in there serving description. Bit upset about that, as the burger was dry and I had to add sauce etc myself.

We have used The Helmsman three times now. Fish, chips and mushy peas. Freshly cooked and piping hot. We are 10 minutes drive away and the food is very hot when we get it home. Portions are very generous. Love it!

Chips and fish were quite tasty, batter on sausage was chewy and the prawns had all their intestinal tract in place which wasn't pleasant at all to see when biting into my tempura prawns.

Firstly, i called up to ask some questions and the person on the phone was very informative and helpful. Secondly, wow. I'd never expect and fish and chips takeaway to be the resturant with the MOST vegan options. I was shocked, so many vegan options to make me happy that I had to order a bit of everything vegan. I was blown away, the vegan savaloy was great. The vegan banana blossom was really good. Everything was great. The only issue was the battered sausage, the vegan sausage used was weird and mushy. I'd recommend Richmond vegan sausages, they are loved by majority of UK vegans. I'd love to see a vegan kids meals. Curry sauce was lovely. Only con is with the label of Vegan being placed on Halloumi, it is not vegan but can be an easy mistake. :)

This fish and chip shop is amazing! Being the only vegan in my family, it is always hard to get vegan options when my family ordered fish and chips other than chips! When someone told me about this place, I was so excited to see their vegan menu! What a choice! One happy family - my family with their fish and chips, and me with my vegan options! The food was delivered swiftly and the food was nice and hot! Amazing place, would highly recommend!

I ordered the vegan chicken burger but was called at 20.12 to inform me they had none and offered me the other vegan burgers and I chose the vegan cheese burger. The food arrived at 20.53 and it was warm and the burger had no cheese and was dry! The pancake roll was horrible and very greasy! So I could only eat the chips! Very disappointing and I won’t be ordering again!

Had large fish and chips ordered to eat in, waited 20 minutes cooked fresh, was so overcooked threw 60% in bin, oil tasted old and past it best. Will not be eating in or ordering takeaway again.

Food from here has normally been good, this order was not up to usual standards, the cod had super tough skin, tasted like it had been tainted with other food in the oil and was just really oily. Chips and sausage were bang-on as usual. Will try one more time in a few weeks to see if it was just a “glitch” on their side.

The meal arrived dead on time and the delivery driver was extremely polite. The meal was hot, the fish was white and flaked beautifully, the batter was crisp and light, and the chips were perfect. We’ve sometimes found that takeaway fish and chips can be a little greasy - but the cod, haddock and chips we received were top notch, not greasy at all. First order placed with the Helmsman and it was great. Just wish they had included a bit of sweet chilli sauce for the battered prawns :-) Will defo order again in the coming weeks for sure.
