Final Checkout in Shetland Islands

What an appropriate name for a small general store & cafe, located near the top of the most northerly island in Great Britain. There is nothing, retail or food wise north of here. And it was a very welcoming place. Visiting these remote islands in mid-March, there are a lot of places that are not open, and we hadn’t found anywhere to have coffee since leaving Mainland island and crossing over to Yell earlier in the day. We enjoyed a coffee & a hot pie in their sit down cafe area, friendly service with a smile. The general store side of the business carries every thing from Australian wine, galvanised chain, baked beans & greeting cards. Now that’s a general store!!

We got lost when our satnav and phones stopped working and found this little gem of a place on the main road comprising of a shop with a small cafe. Staff were great, bacon rolls absolutely lush, coffee excellent. Pay attention to the name, folks, once past this one there's nowhere reliable to eat on the island.

Very well stocked, hardware and electrics e.g as well as food, and lovely friendly and knowledgeable staff, they sell fuel too AND have a small cafe!

I hadn't thought to bring food/drink with me from the mainland on my trip to Unst and after finding 2 other places closed I was beginning to regret not bringing something! Thankfully this place was open and although you couldn't eat in (not sure why given the rules now currently permit that) but I was happy enough at being able to get something to eat. The menu is very limited/basic but the toastie I had hit the spot and kept me going until I got back on the mainland. There are very clean public toilets available onsite too.

First fuel stop on Unst with a shop that has almost everything. Great staff and service, whether you're a local or passing through the welcome is a friendly one!

We loved visiting the northern most shop in the UK where we had some lunch in the little cafe. The shop is incredible, a little treasure trove of every day items usually only sold in bigger stores. Well worth a visit if you're this far north!

Cosy, friendly little cafe and shop at the end of the world - our friends in Shetland were kind enough to give us a fabulous guided tour of the most northerly isles - and a great meeting place for visitors and locals alike. A perfect place for a hot drink and warming snack after a visit to Skaw beach in October!

Lovely cafe here too. Choice of goods on offer from hardware to decorative products for the home. Staff friendly and helpful. Amazing choice of goods here all fresh produce too.

This was the only place we could buy a full meal on the island, and was within a shop/petrol station. On the plus side we saw what a hub this place was for the locals.

I called in for a cup of tea and some homemade cake. The cafe is warm and welcoming and the staff were chatty and friendly. The attached shop looked well stocked, and the toilets were spotlessly clean. I would think that this is a very important community hub for a small island like Unst.

Where the right clothing. Don't bother the stock up on food as the 2 local shops have all you will need. The ferry between Shetland mainland and Yell, and Yell to Unst only take cash.

We had breakfast here because the local hotel we were staying at could not provide breakfast. I had the full Unst fried breakfast and tea which was fine solid food. Good atmosphere. The place is a community hub and carries a wide stock considering the relatively remote location.Well worth a visit if you are in the neighbourhood.

Shop is well stocked, although do be sure to go early for fresh meats as they seem to run out quickly. Staff are a tad unfriendly. There's also a cafe serving soups and other light snacks. Skibhoul stores is a better shop and very nearby. Would return only to catch a glimpse of the pretty young shop assistant.

We got off the ferry from Yell and realized we'd need lunch. It was about 2:00 and we were directed to the Final Checkout. The place was full - we got the last table. My husband got a backed potato that was unevenly heated, and we both got toastie sandwiches, which came piping hot and did not slump on cheese. Service was prompt and friendly enough. The rest of the place was incredible. Petrol station out front, one stop shopping inside. Need a single serve bottle of Prosecco? Check. Squeezy cheese? Check. A pineapple? Check. Plumbing supplies, pet food, kids toys? Check, check, and check. There aren't a ton of options for random-time eating on Unst. The Final Checkout more than adequately served our needs.

Wide range of items at reasonable prices plus a lovely coffee shop which serves breakfast, lunches and take away drinks. Very nice, helpful staff.

We dropped in recently for morning tea after reading the reviews. The coffee and service was good but unfortunately there was no ‘home baked’ goodies as mentioned in previous reviews, we were also told there was no WIFI. Unst has very limited places to go and it was a shame that Final Checkout didn’t live up to the previous reviews I read.

Where else can you eat, drink, catch up on your emails, wait for a bus and hire a taxi. Talk about a one-stop-shop. Lady in the shop helpful and friendly. 'Jimmy' the driver - absolutely outstanding.

What a great wee place to stop for a coffee and light bite. Nice home baking and pleasant service. Not another place like it for a 100 miles, or so it seems. Forgot anything on your travels? Well, this is the place to find that item - it seems to have almost everything for sale, even fuel if you are running low.

We called in here one day whilst we were out and about for a nice hot drink, and was amazed at the place. The cafe part was nice and friendly and the shop had absolutely everything that you can think of. Just sorry that we never got to try the breakfast which was highly recommended but next time.

Great shop, reasonably priced food, lovely service and very handy when you're on the island. The shop has a massive selection of goods. The café always has a soup of the day, fresh cakes and pies.

This store has most things you'd need for a food shop plus some extra necessities. It also has a comfortable, clean and well provisioned cafe. Friendly and helpful staff.

Superb breakfast, even though the sole member of staff was serving 9 other people at the same time I was served quickly and the quality was not compromised. Highly recommended

This is just a tiny place in a supermarket but it did nice toasties and nice soup and even though the young girl was a bit abrupt the young boy was lovely and cheery and very helpful.

The cafe is part of the shop premises and serves reasonably priced food. Soup is always available as are filled rolls, with cooked breakfasts available in the mornings. Not a fancy place but rightly popular with locals and visitors alike.

It's easy to see what an essential centre Final Checkout is, for locals and visitors in this remote island, all year. Garage, filling station, shop and cafe. We called in for hot drinks and snacks and we were very pleased with everything. The cafe was warm and comfortable and busy with a mix of visitors and local people. The shop appears to sell everything from food to gifts and cards to household items. I really enjoyed our visit. Thanks to the staff for all the hard work it must take to run this business.

There is not a lot of choice of places to eat or get a hot drink on Unst, hardly surprisingly, given its location.

Arrived at lunchtime - not much choice on Unst. Of 3 staff not one even looked up and having waited a while the so-called serving girl was rapt in conversation with friends at another table so we had to go up to the counter to ask to order and were told to wait until said waitress had finished her conversation. Very unsatisfactory service. Come on Scottish hospitaity! Just because you are the only place on the block who serves anything doesn't mean you can be rude.
