Embe in Peterborough

We've had a few takeaways from this place, and we had our first sit-down meal yesterday . It was amazing! The atmosphere, the music, the rum punch, the food and friendly Nick! We're soooo glad we could have at least one sitdown meal here.... We will see you soon

Imagine charging someone for a meal, make them wait for delivery and then the delivery turns up and you've just scribbled on a box? No one answering the phone but you thieves took my money for a meal you didn't provide. Disgusting. The other meal was subpar. £3.95 for ONE Tesco nan bread. £3.95 for 4 spoonfuls of coleslaw. Robbing restaurant.

A total rip off. We ordered half a jerk chicken with coleslaw and rice n peas plus callaloo and chickpea curry. The curry was not delivered, but instead we got a message on one of the boxes that said 'sorry no chickpea'. We still got charged for it and when I tried to call the restaurant about four times, nobody answered even though it was half an hour before their closing time. The flat bread was chewy and clearly from a supermarket whilst the chicken was dry. Avoid this place like a plague.

The first thing that I noticed after ordering was that despite my family being the only people in there, the open kitchen was dead silent from the moment we ordered to the moment we were served. I ordered the Jerked Pork Belly with rice, but the whole plate came covered in a sauce that had an intense taste of black pepper and tamarind, which soon enough was the only thing I could taste. My mother ordered a BBQ plate, which was not barbecued or charred, but boiled and drowned in sauce. The atmosphere and staff were both very warm and friendly, which only made me more excited to try this food, of which I never experienced more disappointment in my life. I love food and hate waste, but this is the first time I've ever left a plate half-full.

We came here to celebrate Mother's Day. We had a reservation so got seated quickly. The orders were taken promptly. The waiting time for food was quite long but the conversation was flowing so we didn't mind too much. When the food arrived my first thought was that the presentation could have been better - it was very basic. But never mind, it was tasty and fresh. We were informed by the waiter that they offered one free dessert per table as it was Mother's Day. The owner came over and said they would offer us two free desserts as we had two mothers at the table which we thought was very sweet. However upon checking the payment receipt we discovered we were charged for all the desserts... Only noticed when we got home annoyingly. The desserts took ages to arrive, we had to chase with the waitress as our parking was expiring. I suspect they were forgotten about. The desserts were average at best.

Can’t rate the food because I never got to try it but I made a reservation and we got there on time and after waiting 45 mins for our reserved table we left and went somewhere else. It was not busy enough to warrant that wait time, as there were many empty tables we could’ve been put in. It’s a shame because we were very excited to try to the food

This place has gone downhill since my last visit the food quality and the service was just awful very disappointed

Avoid at all costs! We walked in to ask if they had a table for 2 people and were greeted eventually by the rudest and most aggressive person who we assumed was the owner. He said no room, put his hands in the middle of our backs and physically pushed us out of the restaurant! It was completely shocking behaviour…I have never been so disgusted in my life plus an hour later we walked back past and there were 2 people in the whole place! The food may be good but I wouldn’t eat there if I was paid with service like that!

Wouldn't go anywhere else for Caribbean food. The foods always amazing and Nick the owner is always so accomodating. If you've never been, it's a must you go!

This place is a whole vibe!! The atmosphere, decor and music truly transport you to the Caribbean!! Recommend the chick pea app , curry chicken and the orange/choc cake! Oh, and the Tanzanian chicken!! Chef's kiss! The owner will personally greet you with a smile and a hug! Service was a little slow, but overall a great experience! Support local small businesses!!!

This is now my favourite and only place to dine in with my friends and family. I've been literally dragging everyone in to taste the delicious 😋 food every time we are in town. From the starter to dessert, everything is yummy and I never get tired of it. The staff are soo friendly, makes you feel like family. The music and atmosphere is perfect 👌🏽. Absolutely in love with the place and food ❤️. If you are not a big fan of spicy food just remember to tell them from beginning to not make it spicy. Trust me, it will still be 😋. Unlike me that loves extra 🔥 😂.

What a fabulous meal my daughter and I enjoyed at Embe earlier this week. Since the demise of John Lewis, my trips into Peterborough have been few and far between, however, I was delighted to sample the warm ambience of this wonderful Afro-Caribbean restaurant situated on Cowgate. As we entered the restaurant, we were greeted with a lively ambiance, accompanied by the rhythmic beat of Afro Caribbean music that set the perfect tone for our dining experience. The decor beautifully captured the essence of the culture, with colourful artwork adorning the walls and charming wooden furnishings that evoked a sense of authenticity. We were met by Charlotte who greeted us with a warm welcome and showed us to our seats for the evening. The menu offers an extensive array of Afro Caribbean delicacies, showcasing the diverse and enticing flavours that define this incredible cuisine. From the moment our plates arrived, we knew we were in for a treat. The presentation was visually appealing, with each dish thoughtfully crafted to perfection. Rosie and I opted for a sharing platter, and we were not disappointed! One word of caution – all the food is freshly prepared and cooked by the wonderful and experienced owner and chef Nick Rutta so be prepared to wait a little time for the food to arrive. The Shared Jerk starter was incredible – an explosion of tastes, tender chicken wings and diced pork belly served with one of Nick’s delicious sauces and crunchy plantain chips. Nick and the team were very attentive (but not overly!) and can ‘spice it up’ according to your own tastes. I quite like my food to have a bit of ‘bite’ and the mixture of spices were perfect! The atmosphere in the restaurant is very ‘laid back’ and the background soul music very conducive to my own musical tastes – but not too loud – it was great to be able to enjoy a conversation with my daughter whist we ate. More food arrived, all served by a lovely young waitress. I decided to have a Pina Colada cocktail (my holiday drink!) with the main course – a tasty, succulent mutton curry with rice and peas alongside a superb mango and avocado salad. Rosie opted for vegetable curry which got a big thumbs up. What truly sets Embe apart is their commitment to maintaining the soul of Afro Caribbean cuisine. The use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients in their dishes contributes to the authenticity and ensures the flavours remain true to the traditional roots. The curried goat is the best in the UK!

Had a great meal here tonight. The food was amazing. The goat curry very succulent with the most beautiful sauce. The mix jerk platter for two was a very good intro to many parts of the menu. A warming spice to it, but not overall hot. A laid vibe and relax service.

We waited 45mins for our food and we expected it to be awesome. We ordered Chicken Tenders, Jerked Salmon, Jolaf Rice, Jerked Pork Belly. The "Jerked" sauce tastes just like store bought Regi-Regi sauce. The Rice was out of a jar and it tastes like thai green curry paste. Everything tasted like it was either microwaved or boiled. It all came piping hot and nothing had any of the signiture caramelisation that comes from a frying pan or grill. The food served should have taken no more than 10mins total cooking time. If food was coming out of the kitchen for the 45mins I was waiting I'd accept that it was worth the wait but there was 30 mins where nothing was coming out of the kitchen. If I were to guess I'd guess it was being defrosted. It isn't the worst place I've been to but it isn't far off. I'll give them another go later on in the year but it better be a big improvement.

Lovely food, lovely place and awesome staff. Really enjoyed the food, the atmosphere was great to match the taste.

The food here is amazing, the peri spiced chips had a bit too much oomph for my liking, they were insanely spicy, but in spite of that we thought Embe was great. We'll return for sure.

Finally, found a Caribbean restaurant with beautifully seasoned food and not packed with scotch bonnet! The host was absolutely lovely, we had the seafood starter which was bursting with flavour and i had the lamb chops whilst my husband had the jerk chicken. The portions were great. Will definitely go back. We also had a few cocktails which were very nice.

There were too many people for the amount of tables. They ran out of ordered food and the owner was belligerent. Very poor customer service.

Sensational restaurant! They have a separate vegan menu which we ordered from. The food was unique and incredible. The ackee and callaloo was especially delicious. Cocktails are also excellent! Very friendly service too.

Insanely good food, it was quiet and we were the only ones there upon arrival and for most of our visit which is sad only because it deserves to be packed every night! We had the jerk sharing platter which I would highly recommend and was the perfect amount of food for two people! Drinks also great at 2 cocktails for £12. Super flavourful, super yum. (The music also 100% made the vibe)

Embe knows how to make you feel at home away from home. Amazing music and vibe, tastiest dishes for miles. I love that he’s brought this food to Peterborough and I love that he makes an effort to meet his customers. He embodies passion and you can taste it

First time at Embe and will definitely visit again, relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and the food was fresh cooked. Superb. They also catered very well for a dairy allergy. I wish I had discovered this place sooner, will definitely visit again.

My wife and I managed get a Friday night table for two and absolutely loved it. The menu is by no means Fine Dining, but whatever you order is cooked with bags of flavour and tastes amazing! The Carribbean stocked Beer fridge is also perfect with the food. 🍻 Shout out to the great owner and staff aswell. Took time to chat. Attentive, but not over bearing. Amazing people. Won't be long before we're back again.

Was staying in Peterborough for the night and was recommended this place by a work colleague. I had the Mango Chicken and Dirty fries with Chorizo, both meals were very nice and i would definitely come back next time i am in the area. The server was very friendly and made us feel welcome.

I’m sorry to discredit a black business but this was not authentic Caribbean food. The man who served us was nice however the food was not up to standard at all. The portions were very small and expensive. The man forgot the macaroni and cheese, which is fine as everyone makes mistakes but proceeded to bring out this (pictured below) which is pasta, chicken and cheese I wouldn’t visit again. Although it did fill me up, however left feeling as though it did not warrant spending £60.

Don't go to this dump! if you don't wanna end up disappointed! very rude people. all I did was ask about the opening hours as they have no opening hours on the door. And when I asked the guy he just laughed right in my face. I was very unhappy with his rudeness so Will ovoid .it's the worst restaurant I've ever been in my entire life so me and my friends, and family. will avoid this run down dump! and will go elsewhere. Also I think they don't like disabled people. I don't normally do reviews if I do they are usually very positive . But I had to review this to warn others to not have to endure such a horrible place 0 stars .

Just had a delicious meal at Embe Soul Food, Peterborough. Can't recommend highly enough. I had the chicken and prawn jambalaya, my friend had the veggie jambalaya, we had a good bottle of red and shared a pudding of Jamaican Trifle. Everything delicious. Pricing good. Staff wonderful. Highly recommend.

Haven't yet eaten here, lovely venue, they hosted the Women of The World event for International Women's Day. Great space. Welcoming vibes. Loved it. Definitely will return for food it smelt delicious.

Ordered online, they literally forgot half the order, was ok but absolutely minimal mutton in the mutton curry. Like 3 pieces. Also I suspect the base might be Japanese Katsu stock... For 15 quid. We were looking forward to a good munch but these new places just can't seem to do anything right. I wish them luck, they will need it. Also, when you walk past the restaurant, it looks closed, stick some lights in the window ffs.

I'm not sure what's African about this restaurant as it's all carribean. Service was 10/10; very attentive and friendly. Chicken wings were 3/10; lacks freshness, over microwaved, and very small portion. Curry goat was 9/10; very fragrant, fresh, and tasty. Rice n peas 4/10; very dry and there were no peas.

Excellent customer service, very friendly and helpful, currently on a vegan diet and the restaurant had a completely separate manu for me ! The food was delicious full of flavours and well presentaed. I under estimated the Rum punch! But it kicked in when my belly was full :) We had a great time with Excellent vybes and music in the background. We ll definitely be visiting again soon.

A real find in Peterborough - would definitely recommend this place! Ok, so it was very quiet on a Tuesday evening - not a surprise in an economic crisis - but it's nice to support a local independent and the food was absolutely delicious!! The "Butter Crispy Fish" I had for a starter is one of the best things I've ever tasted (and I eat well)! The goat curry was also great (hot but that's how I like it). Friendly service, funky old-school disco tracks & colourful decor all added to the experience. Fair play to them for having a decent locally brewed craft beer / hoppy IPA in bottles too. I would happily go back in a flash.

This place was quite dreary and basic. Portions were child size, I've had larger portions as starters elsewhere. The curry goat was bland and tasteless; the ackee & saltfish came in a pale coloured water and all you could taste was salt; white rice was hard; their idea of a salad is grated cabbage and a couple shards of carrots. I wouldn't call this establishment a restaurant as it has the feel of a cafe. Overpriced dismal food. It might be ok for the European palate but it's not true Afro-Caribbean food. Wouldn't go back and wouldn't recommend.

Absolute perfect evening. Service was so personal and friendly. The food was just as I always expect.... delicious and personalised. This time more than ever the presentation from the chef was sooooo pretty. The music makes me wish I could have their playlist every time. I don’t need much help when it comes to choosing a place for date night. In Peter ohhh Embe always wins.

My partner and I came here to drink a coffee and it was supremely tasty. The place has an amazing vibe to it and the staff are really friendly. I can only recommend the place.

Some of the best ribs, chicken wings, and the most delicious Caribbean food in general. Lovely warm atmosphere and the manager is really friendly, we are regularly coming here for lunch and the occasional dinner.

I’ve been meaning to try this place for years before it even became a restaurant. But yesterday I went and I had the goat curry and it was absolutely amazing. My best friend had the chicken curry. Personally this is the best Afro/Caribbean I’ve ever eaten. The slogan in the restaurant “Soul food.. not like your mamas” is so true. It is really amazing soul food and this place is now one of my fav I’ve ever been too 😍😍. Meat so succulent and flavours popping, side dishes are plenty and filling i am just so in love. The staff were lovely & The owner was so kind and came out to make sure everyone was okay and enjoyed the food. I really love that extra personalised service 😍😍 Big up Embe and keep doing what you’re doing 😋🍛🥘🧑🏾‍🍳

On and off the years I've been to embe lots man. When it's busy it can be slow but the music and the food make it fully worth any wait. Best oxtail I've ever eaten today!

My order through 'Über Eats'was of low standard and the jerk chicken was dangerously undercooked. Garlic bread, hard, tasteless and cold. Ribs, very tough and just lukewarm . Same for the chicken wings. Coleslaw and macaroni cheese , no complaints. Chips were meant to be peri peri salted but were plain. So overall a very bad experience. A simple refund for the chicken was given to me but I find that an insult. Undercooked chicken is a big health issue and needs to be taken seriously !!!!

All these years and the man can't cook rice and peas. Flavourless. Fake Caribbean vibes.

A warm welcome & awesome food, but be prepared to soak up the atmosphere, as all the food is prepared from fresh & the chef likes to make sure every dish is perfect. So make an evening of it, don't rush & just chill out.

Over prices and lowest quality meats used.

This is a great alternative to the usual restaurant and pub food menus. The owners are super friendly and they have created a lovely vibe with super colourful decor. The food has to me a unique taste, kinda spicy but only as spicy as required. The menu isn't huge but big enough. We liked it so much we went back for a second night. If you're a bit bored of the usual Italian, Indian etc this is a great alternative. If you go after 6.30 you can park for free in the street behind the restaurant. Cocktails are also great and good value at any time.

Nick is such a lovely man and his food perfectly reflects his attention to people and happiness. He puts so much passion on what he makes he made me like jackfruit!!! I never do jackfruit despite being Vegetarian!! And oh boy I LOVED that burger I would have ordered a second one.

First class quality food. Highly recommend. You have earnt my respect and have my loyalty... Equally great service too. The guy running the place is a gentleman and looks after me with every visit...

What a great find. Everything about this place is fantastic- food, cocktails, atmosphere, service, staff. Cannot fault it and would highly recommend it. We had jerk chicken, rice'n'peas, plantain and macaroni with jerk chicken. Food cooked to perfection and as spicy as you wanted. The obligatory rum punch too! Look forward to my next visit!

Absolutely loved our meal. The seasoning was on point. Huge compliments to the chef. All the staff were really friendly. We didn’t have to wait long for our food. There was a wide choice to chose from. The rum punch definitely hit the spot. Will definitely visit again if I come to Peterborough again.

We were impressed the first time we dined here, and had a great experience. However, the second time I must say was my worst experience ever in a restaurant. I never write negative reviews but felt compelled to do so after the way we were treated. We were ignored, waited for over an hour for our food, which when arrived was the wrong order. Instead of replacing it with the correct order, they decide to tell us after waiting over an hour that they didn’t have the item we originally ordered in stock at all and just offered us a free pint in an attempt to make up for it - which we declined as we didn’t want it. The owner/manager in particular was very rude. Obviously, we won’t be coming back. Also, their “cake of the day” which the manager claimed he baked himself from scratch is mass produced frozen stuff called Sidoli Frozen Sticky Chocolate Orange Cake. Disappointing!

What a find! We walked past the restaurant and then were given a leaflet down the road. There was a friendly welcome. There was a separate lunch menu where I think the portions are smaller than off the main menu. This was ideal for us. We both had Jambalaya which was delicious. The prices were good for lunch as well. We would definitely go back if we're in Peterborough.
