This lovely little restaurant is hidden away in the covered market and the overall decour of the market is a little dismal, but you should not let this put you off. We had wandered past this place a couple of items and the smells had always impressed us. The reviews on Trip Advisor convinced us to pop in. My wife and I ordered starters (Spring rolls and Satay chicken) and mains (red Thai chicken curry and green Thai chicken curry with plain and sticky rice). We see these as the staples of Thai cuisine and a good way to judge the quality. The food is all freshly cooked in view of you so you can see exactly what is going into the food and how it is cooked. The starters came first. The satay sauce was fantastic with the chicken tender and juicy. The spring rolls were smaller than what I am used to, but you got around 9-10 rather than 2 or 3, and they were so crisp and fresh. Really nice served with plum sauce. Our mains came in large bowls along with the rice on a plate. The flavours from these were exquisite. Some of the best I have tasted in this country. Really good size portions. Price wise it is really reasonable, with us leaving after these meals with change out of £30. The staff are very friendly and talk to you easily and appropriately. Both my wife and I really enjoyed our meals here. Talking to the owner she is looking to move her restaurant to a more suitable location with better opening times for a restaurant and better surroundings. This will own add to the experience at this restaurant as the food is top notch already and from their they can only build. I highly recommend this restaurant.

We stumbled upon this little place on our shopping trip and remembered it to come back to try it on a week day. Aren't we glad we did. The food was freshly cooked in the little kitchen and because of this, it is not a place to go to if you are in a hurry. The taste was good but the portions could have been bit bigger. The café is small so we can only imagine a bit of a wait for a table and food on a busy Saturday. A definite yes to going back for an informal and relaxed lunch.

I was slightly apprehensive about eating in the Rolleston but it was really nice and seems to be under new ownership. The food was really lovely and very authentic. The chef came out and chatted with us and bought us over little extras to go with our meal. I had spring rolls to start- they were massive and there were 6 of them!! So you could definitely share if you don't have a huge appetite, I then had the chicken massaman and coconut rice for main- really tasty and very authentic. The chef mentioned that she was getting a separated area for the restaurant in the future which would definitely add to the experience. Would go again!

Fantastic little cafe, with really tasty homecooked food. I am always looking for somewhere that serves an authentic Thai Papaya salad, as this is always the first dish I order when in Bangkok. This one didn't disappoint. It was the right level of hot, sweet, salty and sour. Better than a lot of the salads that I ate in Thailand last year that had seemingly been dumbed down for tourists. The fishcakes were frozen from a packet, so a bit disappointing, but the rest of the meal was delicious and made up for this. The coconut rice was perfect. We came across the Elephant Thai Cafe by chance but we look foward to going back to taste the curries, stir fries and sticky rice.

So quirky that you could be in Bangkok, this café/restaurant occupies a small corner of the (largely uninteresting) Swindon covered market. You're enticed in by the great aromas of Thai food and the bright smiles of May and her friends. The food is cooked in front of you and is authentic and for the most part as good as street food in Chiang Mai or anywhere else in Thailand. We enjoyed a hot papaya salad, brilliant chicken with basil and a great massaman curry, rich with coconut milk. All were restaurant quality, as others have noted. Coconut rice was great, sticky rice not as good as it should have been. Limited range of soft drinks. Keen prices. Lots of nice chat with May and friends. We really could have closed our eyes and imagined ourselves in Thailand, which isn't a bad option when you're actually lunching in Swindon.

wow what a great place. unfortunately i was the only customer for a good hour plus i dont know how long before and after i was there. the friendly owner greeted me and was impressed with my thai shirt and thai greet - i explained my wife was thai. I found it online and as i was working in swindon decided to go eat lunch. have to say, was amused at the menu that had a variety of dishes, however they were all £6.99 (medium dish). the only variation were the side dishes and appetisers. I really wanted papayá salad and asked for a "smaller/cheaper" version, but was only 99p less. I also had king prawn fried rice. Not a huge portion and, in my opinion, slightly over cooked. All food is cooked to order, by the way, but the rice dish seemed to appear quickly. the papaya salad took a little longer and spicy just the way i like them, but i was told it was one chilli only which surprised me.I would recommend this place, but the word cafe implied to me some cheaper grub, rather the restaurant priced food.

I stumbled across the Elephant cafe having recalled that I had read about it in the local paper. As I was looking in the door the owner encouraged me to give the food a try and I am glad I did. As a fan of Thai food a green curry is always a good test so that is what I chose. The very generous portion was beautifully flavoured and I could instantly tell that totally genuine ingredients had been used. The key to quality Thai is freshness of the ingredients and this really hit the spot in terms of both heat and flavour. The owner regularly checked if I was enjoying the food and was very friendly and welcoming. I would definitely recommend the cafe and will certainly visit again.

A nice, clean place with good grub. I have eaten pad Thai noodles here 3 -4 times and they are lush. My partner loves the hot curries. No complaints... It is not fast food so a wait of 15/20 mins is ok with me, time to have a drink or buy some goods in the supermarket. I don't understand the hygiene rating: have watched the food being cooked and stored loads, and the hygiene is better than many places I have seen with stars on doors. May is bewildered too: perhaps some more hands-on advice before the council award stars would work better?

If you only ate in restaurants that had been awarded 5 star top rating for food hygiene by Swindon Borough Council you'd be living a pretty unexciting life.. this rating is more to do with processes and council policy than the actual food itself. Imagine going to some of the food markets in Thailand with that attitude and you'd be too scared to eat anything. This is real Thai food, sourced from Thailand and cooked right in front of you .. on that basis you know it's going to be safe. I've been going here for about 2 years and never had any problem with the food. It's incredible to me that you can (for example) have Chicken Pad Thai, cooked right in front of you in the traditional way and sit down to eat it in comfort, all for £4.99. Now that is value for money. May (the owner) speaks very good english so there's never been any confusion.Thai food is has become very popular in recent years. When cooked well it's subtle flavours are a delight. This place is a delight. It's a gem in Swindon and deserves to be a resounding success. I'll keep right on going there and recommend it to everybody!

Visited for lunch - had a prawn starter that tasted of absolutely nothing and prawn main with noodles that was freshly cooked and absolutely lovely. Wife had dumplings to start and chicken with noodles that were both nice.Restaurant is quite small and kind of "basic cute" - a pop-up in Swindon's tented market. Owners also run the Thai supermarket opposite so produce is easily sourced. Language is an issue. Menu is quite simply written with no pictures or detail, but staff can only accept orders by pointing at menu so no chance to discuss. I heard another diner ask if he needed curry sauce with his choice. Answer was "you can have curry sauce", so he replied "do I need curry sauce?" and so it went on, for some time! Also note that Elephant Thai Cafe was awarded a Food Hygiene Rating of 1 (Major Improvement Necessary) by Swindon Borough Council on 24th April, 2014 (I only found this after visiting!!)

Me and my sister decided to try their lunch buffet as we love asian food. It's supposedly starts at 11am-4 and the price for adult is £6.99 and only £4 for students which is great as we were both students. We arrived there at 11:20 and they were still cooking..and there were only 5 dishes cooked. So we sat down waiting.. May, the owner gave us prawn crackers whilst waiting. The place was small, feels cramped but hey, we're here for food, right..and as long as it's clean, it should be fine.May was very busy, she would go back to her shop (to do the til) and then go back to the kitchen to cook..was a little worried with the hygiene as she deals with money and then food. But we just let it go as May and the other cook were very friendly. We started eating at around 11:40.. We were the only customers there..The variety of curries were all brilliant! Very tasty and you could really tell the difference if you're eating curry in a pub or in cosmo and other buffet resto.. Probably the best curries I've had.. After having them for a little while, we started feeling hot and ask for drinks..the selection they have is so little, just can of coke, pepsi and some asian? juice drink.. Asked if they have tap water or if they serve the drinks by pint..and said no.. So me and my sister decided to have some bubble.T ... May said, 10 minutes as she was really busy with her oriental shop and then with cooking so I said it's fine..Now, going back to food, Their tom yum soup (my favorite!) was so mouth watering, i had to go back twice for it.. The only little complain I have with their tom yum is that, they only have chicken.. For me, seafood (esp. Prawns) suits tom yum soup best. So when my sister asked if they have seafood for tom yum, the cook said we have to pay extra for it.. Anyway, 15 minutes later, they brought out 2 more dishes out.. And again, both were tasty.. After waiting..and waiting..and waiting, our drinks (bubble.T) isn't ready yet..we were nearly finish and already very thirsty so we just settled with 2 cans of coke..(wish they would also serve water though..).. I feel that they should hire one more staff..coz I feel bad for May..she was really busy.. There was an available pudding (cake) but we didn't try them as the cake was still sealed/boxed.. Didn't bother at all..Anyway, when we were about to pay, our bill was around £15-£18 asked why as it should only be £4 for students.. May said that when she say "STUDENT", she meant a "CHILD" ... That was a let down as we weren't really expecting it.. We were a bit annoyed as their "student" was very misleading..Anyway, if you're after authentic thai food, then this is the place to eat..just bring your own drink or additional drink (ie water) as you might feel limited like we did.. Also remember to come here later than 11am ..and remember that there are limited dishes (there were only 7 dishes when we ate, apart from rice and noodle... in which 4 of the dishes were variety of curries... They do take away btw..if you're after overall dining experience with more choices..then somewhere else would be a better choice.
