El Gato Negro Tapas in Liverpool

The food was lovely, but the service was so disappointing. We felt we kept having to call the staff over to order drinks etc and felt that we were just annoying (we booked bottomless brunch). I've been to Manchester a few times and they are exceptional there! Such a shame as it's a beautiful place with amazing food.

Went here for the second time last night, amazing food love the gambas pil pil and beef short rib. A little more expensive than your average tapas restaurant but definitely worth it.

We enjoyed a special occasion there and I submitted a special request and despite being busy on the night they acknowledged it and made sure we were well looked after… very attentive and friendly staff, service, decor and atmosphere overall was faultless. Great place to dine!

Absolute fantastic atmosphere and really nice surroundings. Food was lovely and came out relatively quick. We went for Tipsy Tapas as could not fault the speed of the top ups. Food was lovely! So much so we booked for following Saturday :-)

The food is very nice indeed , however you do leave the restaurant at the end feeling you have been ripped off. To give you examples ; £16 for monkfish dish containing one tiny piece of monkfish, manchego dish containing 3 slices of cheese and a cracker for £8 . At the end getting guilt tripped into paying service charge on top of bill.

A great atmosphere in a beautiful building. All four of us were very happy with the delicious food, which was cooked to perfection. The staff are all very friendly and efficient. Our server, Paul, was friendly but unobtrusive, happy to make recommendations as to type of wine we might like with our choice of food. Hopefully we will be returning very soon. Looking forward to it already.

Went in for a glass of wine. £10 for a glass of oxidised wine. Had to go in search for someone to pay the bill, to be service charged for TWO DRINKS!! Although I was told it could be taken off AFTER I paid we're is the common sense, I've spent most of my career in hospitality and don't begrudge giving a tip. But I do hate having the piss taken in circumstances like this

This is a rare throwback to a restaurant that has brilliant service and doesnt rush you off your table. From the moment we arrived the staff were professional but very accomodating amd welcoming, allowing us to take our time to order, enjoy our food and drinks and regularly checking in on us (not rushing us off our table). Food quality was really good (only letdown was octopus that was overcooked) but the salt cod croquettes were superb. Lovely ambience and atmosphere.

It is a Spanish restaurant. We went in just to have a coffee and it is without a doubt the best coffee we have had in England. The site and location are beautiful. The best experience we got from this place is having met Pablo, one of the managers, who made us feel at home. We will be back!

Great food and drinks couldn't fault any item

The tastiest tapas we've had, even compared to the ones we had in Barcelona! Without exaggeration. Each item was beautifully cooked and presented, with a delicious sauce. The roasted cauliflower with added pomegranate seeds and chickpeas made it interesting and delicious. The best tapa was undoubtedly the salted cod fritters. Very flavourful and beautifully plated. The restaurant itself has a lovely ambience - modern and full of pretty lights. The front of house manager was very welcoming and helpful (e.g., pointing out that the service charge was optional - of course, they deserved it!). What's not to like?

THANK YOU! In November my partner and I went here for our 5 year anniversary. We were given Prosecco and they played our song through the entire restaurant! The staff were all fabulous especially Gabriel he was so helpful and friendly. The food was the cherry on top. Will be back soon! 🩷

My family had a great time here. The tapas choice was perfect as well as the drinks choice. The staff are very helpful, knowledgeable about the menu and attentive. The decor is fab and the restaurant is in a lovely old building. Well worth a visit.

Despite the name, there is nothing Spanish (that I could see) about the decor, but the ambience was superb. Loved the pimientos de Padrón - best that I have had in UK. Croquetas were good but would have been outstanding with a little more flavour. All in all, a most enjoyable experience. Shocked at the price, but prices in all restaurants have shot you recently.

Absolutely brilliant. Came here with my girlfriend and left a message on the reservation stating "coming on a date, please make special". As you can see they went all out! Rose petals, a candle and prosecco brought straight to our table. Food was impecable and the service was top tier. 11/10 would reccomend.

Lovely food and evening, recommend the salted Carmel espresso martini cocktail we enjoyed after dinner. Enjoyed our evening so much I have booked to go back and try the bottomless brunch (tipsy tapas) Only negative is that the member of staff who served us, when we asked about the menu she was vegetarian and didn’t know what a lot of the meat choices were instead of just asking another member of staff to help us.

£2.10 pence for the privilege of buying and collecting my drink from the bar. How is that right. I bought a carafe of sangria at the bar. Menu price £21. When I paid on card I was charged £23.10. The barmaid charged 10% service charge without asking. I felt too embarrassed to challenge this as I thought maybe I had missed some small print in the menu - there was none. Left a bad taste. It's not about the £2.50. It's more about the underhand way it happened. I wonder how many others have paid the "automatic assumed tip". I am all for rewarding good service but the choice should ALWAYS be the customers and not the staffs.

A 30th birthday gathering ruined. Was met with rude staff, who had double-booked the private room for the long-awaited birthday bash. Interestingly they were quick to take our money in advance (upwards of £400) and there didn't appear to be a miscommunication on that part. 9 of us went for the £38 tipsy tapas which included 3 tapas and unlimited refills of a small selection of alcoholic beverages. They then came to offer us a complimentary drink each as a gesture or goodwill. Terms and conditions applied! Only the 9 people who had paid for tipsy tapas was entitled to this drink, and we were limited to the drinks on the tipsy tapas menu, therefore those drinks were not complimentary and had been paid for by none other than ourselves. What a joke. Will not be going back, and what was meant to be a special birthday experience, ruined!

The foods okay not amazing. Not really worth the price tag in my opinion, if you look at it closely doesn't really resemble quality tapas you get in Spain. I guess you're paying top wack for the location and the surroundings which are quite nice.

We really enjoyed our evening out here. The tapas was good, right or nine out of ten. The service was perfect, attentive and friendly but not intrusive. My favourite thing about the place though is the atmosphere and appearance, it's dead classy and cool and upbeat. I'd recommend it for a date or occasion for dinner but also for drinks with a bit of a nibble. It's a bit expensive but in my opinion well worth it.

Hit and miss for the price point - it's nice to walk in to somewhere with certainty whatever you order from the menu is all going to be great, however this was not one of these places. You're playing a game of roulette with the question of will your order be worthwhile. The 'Bikini' for example should be avoided at all costs, scarcely filled between what can only be described as a slice of Hovis Best Of Both - do better. The service was almost rude at times and did not create the welcoming ambiance the lighting and decor successfully delivered.

I’m not sure this restaurant was prepared for a busy evening! There were three people serving and all three of them were rushed off their feet. The food was pretty good but there was a lot of waiting between plates and between ordering drinks and them arriving. Very nice restaurant, cute decor, and nice food, and the staff were super friendly (just very busy). I’d maybe go again on a quieter night but it was quite expensive (so I’d recommend going during the early evening tapas deal).

There's a lunchtime deal of 3 for £18. I found three to leave me comfortably full. Sitting outside was great especially as it's under shade which keeps things comfortable. Service was really high quality and professional. Everything was delicious by all accounts. My only critique was that the manchego croquettes could have used a little more texture. The highlight was the bikini though, a toasted sandwich with iberico ham, cheese and fried off in truffle butter. Deeply savoury and delicious, I would order this every time I went no question.
