I've been visiting 8th Day cafe for many years to enjoy the dahl and yummy cake however on my most recent recent visit discovered that the toilets had been re-labelled to "cubicles" and "urinals" meaning there is in practice no longer a women's toilet but still effectively a male specific facility though as women simply cannot use urinals! My friend, an abuse survivor, was too scared to go in by herself as a man had gone that way before her and there was no way of knowing which set of toilets he had gone into and she could not face being alone with a strange man while still dealing with her trauma let alone in a place like a toilet. I don't think I'll be returning unless I hear this fake woke nonsense has been rectified.

I have been a customer for many years but was horrified last week to find out that the toilets are now "gender neutral" Which means what were previous women's toilets are open to men using them. The previous men's toilets have a sign highlighting that they are urinals so no woman is going to use them. In other words women have lost their safe toilet space and now share them with any man. The cubicles are not closed so any man can look over or under the cubicle while a woman is using them. This is not acceptable and will affect my visits to the cafe. Please reconsider!!

There is kitchen roll instead of napkins which is odd and the place felt like a school cafeteria. Also after our meal we wanted to use the toilets which we discovered were locked, which considering the cafe is downstairs I highly doubt randoms off the street will be coming in to use them so seems pointless and and inconvenient for the customer. I went to about five other vegan/vegetarian restaurants in the city, this was the only place that consistently had steamed broccoli which is a diet staple for me as I love greens! They have the best homemade french dressing I'd ever had, and their raw cakes aren't too shabby either. I visit Eighth Day cafe roughly once a month, for lunch or early dinner, and am rarely disappointed. They offer a selection of soups, stews or curries, bakes and dahl on a daily basis, as well as salads, cakes, brownies, and other grab-and-go food from the upstairs deli. Prices are reasonable - a customer can expect to pay from £3 to £10 for a meal, in school room canteen style. The meals I have had here include tarka dahl, Greek-style butterbean stew, tomato pasta bake and a Christmas dinner, all served with your choice of brown rice, potatoes or broccoli (at a small extra cost). The dahl is occasionally underseasoned but usually fine, and stews and bakes are always good options. My only reservation is that portions are invariably too small. The cost of sides should really be included in the meal price, since without them, what you buy fails to amount to a proper meal. That said, occasionally, the Eighth Day chefs excel themselves (like with their Christmas mushroom wellington and red wine gravy - although staff were NOT happy when I asked for more of the brown stuff- and in The North too!) with delicious dishes, I just wish I didn't leave still hungry quite so often...

I always get a bit miffed eating out when I feel I could do the food myself - and this was no better than my own cooking. Also, I did think it was a little cheeky charging £4.95 for a vegan meal. I can get bigger portions with meat (which is more costly ingredient) elsewhere. Especially given the stingy potatoes and veg portions.Overall, it's decent (seems freshly cooked at least), but it's not worth paying a fiver for basic cooking.

We were a bit disappointed as they were both really really dry, I couldn't even manage half of the brownie. The cake was dry but not as bad as it had buttercream with it. I know this isn't just because it's egg and dairy free as I've eaten/baked some beautifully moist vegan cakes before. The staff were helpful when I asked which contained nuts and the savoury food although not tried by myself or husband looked and smelled tasty. I've been want to come here for a long time... Finally made. The food is bursting with great flavours; a relaxed atmosphere, even if you're not a veggie you must come and try this wholesome food

This was a fantastic find! I'mnot vegetarian, but the food in here is well prepared and offers a better variety than a non-vegetarian cafe.

I came here with my partner and we both had the full vegan breakfast and it was awesome. It was really big and only cost £6 and it was so tasty!

I never visit Manchester without a trip to the 8th day. It is pure heaven. But especially if like me you are vegan or vegetarian. It's relaxed informal atmosphere, complements the food which is always prepared from high quality ingredients, of unimaginable variety. The only problem here is what to choose as there are always three or four things that I can't decide between , and I always end up going to tell them how great the food is. The veg chilli is always awesome, with brown rice and chunky bread, try the raw food fruit balls Delicious. I really can't praise this place highly enough. Or recommend you visit strongly enough.

Although I'm vegetarian rather than vegan, I tried the vegan breakfast and it was an excellent choice. Everything on the plate complimented each other beautifully and it was superb. I've been here twice in recent years (I live over a hundred miles away) and both times, I was motivated enough to go back to the counter and tell them how good it was and to pass my compliments onto the kitchen. Now I'm wondering about making an excuse to back to Manchester just to eat here again...

Lovely cafe, good choice, outstanding desserts and an extensive choice of foodstuffs upstairs in the shop. I would move to Gunchester just for this.

I have been to the shop upstairs a few times but this was the first time I had been to the cafe. Food smelt amazing but unfortunately I had already eaten to just grabbed a milkshake and my mum got a coffee. Friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Can't wait to visit again and this time get some vegan grub!!

Catching up with an old friend, we called in here for something to eat. He's vegetarian, I'm not. I hadn't been here for many years, mainly due to its location (and, in fact, it was in the same area but in a new building). This place has the air of a college canteen - clean, bright and functional. The choice wasn't huge but what I had (the bean stew) was lovely. My friend had the dhal and seemed quite pleased with it. His tea was very weak but that was probably because he hadn't let it brew properly. I had liquorice and cinnamon tea, which was very nice.

Lots of choice for the non-meat eaters, great vegan choices and everything tasted fantastic from main course to a pot of tea and cake. The hot pudding of vegan apple and rhubarb crumble with vanilla soya cream was amazing. They have free wifi and open until 7 in the evening, I will definitely call in again next time I'm nearby.

Eighth Day has been a calling point of mine for years now. There's always a good selection of hearty vegan food (I've had dreams about that dal) and staff are endlessly friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about what they're selling; the latter referring more to the shop staff, who can always help you find whatever product it is that you're looking for, though the guys down in the kitchen clearly know their stuff! The only even slightly negative point I can make about this place is that a couple of the cakes can be a little bland-tasting... but there's such a wide choice of them that you can't go wrong, anyhow. The shop upstairs sells Vego, too - praise be!!

Love. This. Place.Real food, lovely people, no hassle. Sometimes it's hard when you've got used to eating real food again and doing without meat and dairy - the veggie options in so many places are just overpriced processed stuff with the meat taken out. But this place reaffirms my faith in humanity.

Lovely cafe with excellent choices for vegans. Big portions, we shared a cottage pie with sides (broccoli, potatoes and salad) between the two of us, which came at £6.70. The spiced apple drink was very nice. The cafe is located in the basement, on the ground floor is a shop that is well worth a visit as well, full of organic and fair trade products.

I was in Manchester with my teenage daughter (who's vegan) for her uni interview. I'd googled "vegan Manchester" and found this fantastic place on the PETA website. We had a late lunch; five lentil stew for my daughter and Thai red curry for me, both with rice. She was excited to be offered a wide choice rather than the usual 'one unimaginative option' offered in many restaurants (if any!). Beautifully cooked, very tasty and filling! We decided to go back the following day for breakfast, both opting for the Full Vegan English which kept us propped up (food-wise) for eight hours! A little trip around the shop upstairs (very reasonably priced) and we were very happy visitors. Hoping she gets her place and the opportunity to become a regular visitor here :). - it will be one less thing to worry about!

What a wonderful experience to enter a cafe and be able to eat so much on the menu! The cafe was medium full when I went in at lunchtime so i found a good table. The staff were pleasant, friendly and keen to ensure I was happy with my meal. So many cafes these days are serving soya lattes which is great, but to not worry that I would otherwise go hungry is brilliant. This is definitely my go to cafe in Manchester now.The one tiny downside was that the soup was the ubiquitous carrot and coriander. Would have liked something a little less ordinary. :) However, that I was charged less for soup without bread/roll more than made up for this.

I love this place; the food is consistently good, tasty and fresh. I have never had a bad meal there. In my experience, even confirmed meat-eaters enjoy the food here. Because you buy your food from the counter, there isn't a lot of waiting around for courses to arrive, so a visit here is time-efficient.

As an unknowing observer Eighth Day looks like your average health food shop/café. I wasn't expecting anything too special. I ordered the lentil curry and a slice of vegan ginger cake. The curry was hands down the best curry I've eaten and the cake was just incredible. So nice to see such a humble environment serving good, flavoursome grub, check out the shop upstairs too!!

Later than never !I booked my date and I a Spanish vegan night at the cafe ... That was back on 10th October... The food was amazing !! We are both vegetarian and we did not what to expect as we never been but they turned this casual cafe into an intimate little restaurant for the night, nothing fancy but I found it quite romantic (strangely) ; we absolutely loved all the food, people were very friendly and the wine was very nice too ! I am in and my date will probably be in for the next night definitely recommend their special nights ! Thank you for a great night and sorry I took me that long to review

Went with my daughter; cafe is located downstairs in a large room with plenty of different seating. Acknowledged straight away but not hassled to order, so had time to check out the menu. Had the quiche with salad - both were delicious! Also soup, veggie stews, bakes all available looking very tasty. Plenty of different teas available as well! Staff are lovely and thoroughly enjoyed the visit and the shop upstairs. Recommended! Menu is available online as well.

I absolutely love this place! Awesome for vegetarians and vegans.Food is fresh, delicious and ethically sourced. The choice is amazing and the team are great. Try the vanilla blueberry cake and the smoothies, especially "sunshine"...They are to die for!I saw on their facebook page that they were hosting an Italian Wine Tasting down the cafe on 6th November. Being a wine lover, I usually try to avoid Italian restaurants/events outside Italy. This time though, I decided to give the Italian Wine Tasting a go - especially because this shop really values quality and organic products. It was totally worth it! Wines were very good and you could definitely taste the quality of the olive oil and the "focaccia" bread as well :) If you haven't been to this shop before...well, just go!

I have only been to The 8th Day once and that was for breakfast, but being a wine lover, could not resist attending their vegan wine tasting, hosted by Linda Ward of Vintage Roots Organic Wines. I thought the price of £10 per person, which included seven wines and vegan canapes was an absolute bargain. There were about thirty people attending and we sat in two's or groups of six and as the night went on and the wines were drunk, the noise levels rose, it was good fun.Linda spoke as to what makes a wine vegan (no animal products used in the fining process) and that more wines are vegan, than you would think, but the wine maker is not required to state what fining product is used on the label. However the European Union will be introducing legislation in the near future, which is excellent news for us vegans. Linda talked us through each wine, explaining the wine making method and also which foods matched each wine. The canapes were excellent and included a delicious broad bean and lemon houmous, focaccia bread, olives, chickpea frittata with ratatouille, mushroom pate on crackers and falafel...a real feast of canapes.I hope The 8th Day have other wine tastings, as I would definitely return.

This vegetarian co-operative was once one of my haunts when I lived in Manchester. It was great to call in again when I revisited Manchester - and how it has improved. The dhal was excellent, very good service and low-cost compared with prices I pay in South-East England. I wish we had a similar ethically run co-operative local to where I live.

I visit every week on my way to meet a student at the university. The service is efficient (although not particularly friendly) and the queue moves quickly. The food is always reasonably priced and fresh. I usually go for the dhal or soup which have always been great. I wouldn't visit for dinner but for lunch it's a great stop off.
