Eagle in Islington

I wish I could give zero. Soggy steak sandwich, overpriced, incredibly rude staff, generally unpleasant atmosphere. The whole experience felt like an assault on all my senses, this restaurant gives me anxiety. I don’t recommend it if you’re looking to have anything like a nice evening.

food was great. lots of hustle and bustle on a saturday at lunch time which is great and very vibey trendy casual london eat place. bring your pretentious mates here! I had the steak sandwich which was so simple yet tasted so good. finished it off with a pastel del nata which was also pretty good. would come here again.

Amazing atmosphere always, can take some time to get a table as it’s so popular. Great menu and of course the incredible steak sandwich is a must buy.

What a fall from grace, the reputation of this venue is clearly what is keeping it going as the food quality is terrible and the service just as bad. The steak sandwich tasted of nothing but oil with oily onions to top it, when asking if I could have some mustard with it to make it taste of something, NO, WE DONT DO CONDIMENTS was the response. My friends Taleggio & Mushroom risotto was a far cry from being a risotto rather than a soupy rice. All the while, the lady who appeared in charge swigging her orange squash at the pass and yawning at the top of her voice constantly. AVOID this place and let the reputation and history be all you experience.

Was invited here for lunch with some friends. The food is top notch and it has a friendly atmosphere. Definitely get here early doors as the tables fill up quick. We all had the Steak Sandwich which was amazing!

Lovely pub full of what looked like locals making a great atmosphere. Had probably the best steak sandwich I’ve ever eaten, marinated thinly sliced Rump steak, well seasoned cooked to perfection dipped in its own juices piled into a lovely soft bun with lettuce, great value at £17, 2 pints of cold Estrella and a couple of glasses of Italian red wine, perfect evening, highly recommend!

Unfortunately, the experience was shockingly disappointing. From the service to the food, everything fell short of expectations. The food was bland and lacked flavor, and it wasn’t clean. Two of our guests even left with food poisoning I think from the cod dish, which was incredibly concerning. Not sure if it was an off day, but I wouldn’t recommend based on this visit!

There's something about the humble haggis, neeps and tatties that sings of hearth and home and times to come. Slainte mhath.

As an ex Londoner this place is it: this represents the London I love, amazing food at reasonable prices, a vibe to die for, great service but all done with a genuine desire to be real. If you’re visiting this is a must and if you’re local you’re very lucky to have this place in your midst. The greatest eating experience in London

Great food, big crowd, lots of waiting

Overpriced and underwhelming experience. As a chef, I was truly disappointed to pay £20 for a mediocre dish that fell far below expectations. My friend and I were given just one piece of bread (smaller than a usual bread slice) to share when we asked for more, they reluctantly brought us a second piece. The service was unprofessional, with staff displaying a clear lack of enthusiasm or courtesy. Two dishes and two beers came to over £60, which is absurd for a pub. The quality and experience certainly didn’t justify the price. Would not recommend.

Ok, strange pub for me. So a bit grubby but I love the idea of a beer and one of the chefs meals. They only have a few. Feels a bit like a soup kitchen. But I reckon that if you were out with a few people, drinking through Farringdon and you wanted a beer and a £16 steak sandwich to add a bit of blaast to your drinking stomach then this would suit a purposes. Ps.. Great staff... just a weird pub. I guess I'm saying you have to experience its weirdness

The food was okay, but the staff was extremely rude. One of them pushed me and all staff blamed us for not following their specific Christmas rules, blame us have not read T&Cs which were not clearly communicated. It was an unpleasant experience overall, and I wouldn’t recommend this place based on the service.

Saddened by the service today. 3 separate people embarrassed and disrespected myself and my Chinese and Brazilian colleagues repeatedly during our one hour visit - we felt incredibly unwelcome. I’ve been to the eagle a handful of times so this is a real shame as me and my colleagues would never go back based on the way we were treated today - I’ve never experienced service that overtly rude.

Victims of their own success. I've eaten here 3 times and today will sadly be the last. The food is tasty but this place is too crowded and I don't think it represents value for money any longer. We've always known to expect with the Eagle that it isn't table service and that's ok but the service here now really is not good enough. You can only reserve if you have a large group which means that it is a scramble for seats and some of the high level tables are sub optimal. They only had one waitress today and as a result people were sat at dirty tables that were not cleared until their food arrived and the condiments and bread were not brought until half way through eating. Long queues at the bar to order. No water brought to the table. Dirty toilets. Dishes arrived at vastly different times with no prior warning. The two cooks were simply overwhelmed with orders and the dishes felt rushed. My hake arrived undercooked and had to be remade. The free olives whilst I waited were appreciated but it wasn't enough to make up for an overall disappointing experience. It's such a shame. I hope that the owners focus on improving the service and overall experience, maybe remove some tables, and I would be happy to try it again.

Not friendly at all for vegans 🙁 I work in the area and whenever my colleagues suggest going there for lunch, I remind them it's not really inclusive for the whole group and we end up choosing somewhere else.

Great food / friendly staff and variety of beers to choose from

Went in for a couple of drinks. Place would benefit from paint and varnish. Cleaning up. Inexpensive changrs that would make all difference to customer experience.

There are few places in London that have not changed in +25 years. I enjoy and understand The Eagle's casual vibe and laid back service but not being served bad food. The Scallops we had were far from fresh. They stank, same can be said about the fish, maybe not as badly. Disappointed last visit.

Honestly surprised about the good reviews. The food was simply vile. Super salty and it was literally worse than getting food from a random filthy canteen. Zero cooking skills. The steak Sandwich was overcooked, soggy and salty. The orrechiette where so salty you could hardly eat them. The aubergine salad was cold, old and soggy. Really disappointed. The only extra star is due to the drinks that were good.

PREGNANT We went for dinner with my pregnant daughter and our family to celebrate her birthday. We asked for the Onglet steak to be well cooked for her. The nice man serving said he had to ask the chef . The chef said no - he didn’t speak to us he sent a message that this wasn’t how you cook Onglet. We were told it compromises the dish- to be clear we weren’t asking for everyone in the pub to have well cooked steak that night. And yes women do have to make compromises on what they eat during pregnancy so it wasn’t ideal for her but a tiny adjustment that could be made. So she settled for the Dahl and then we asked if she could have some of the boiled potatoes usually served with the steak. That was a no. It was too late to leave and try and find somewhere that could take 6 people On a Friday- it was a pity as the food that we had was of course very good When I called and spoke to Ed the head of kitchen he listened and said Marco the chef was a nice guy and that they couldn’t make too many variations to dishes in one evening - again we hadn’t asked for any additional ingredients or variations, on the potatoes he wondered if perhaps they had only had enough for their set dishes … it all felt an unnecessary position to take. It spoiled the evening.

Arrived at 2130 on a Monday evening and it was buzzing and busy. Ordered the steak sandwich which is soaked in a chilli gravy. Delicious. Kitchen open until 2230. Go try it out

Underrated spot! A great boozer regardless, but the food is superb. Nothing fancy - just simple but delicious food (harissa scallops on point). Will definitely be returning.

This deserves to be in the top food places in London. It's well priced and delicious. A true hidden gem. This is not your typical pub food as it takes it a notch higher than any other place.

Such A wonderful venue. Traditional pub with thankfully not traditional pub food. The authenticity of this place is contagious. Highly recommend for a taste of London. Just yum.

Food is cheap and tasty! Definitely way better than a normal pub.

NOT FOR PEOPLE WITH FOOD INTOLERANCES! It says on the board that you should inquire about any allergies or intolerances, but when we asked if it's maybe possible to swap the bread of the steak sandwich out with anything else because there is a gluten intolerant person in the group, we got laughed at with a "we're not that kind of restaurant". The plate had a couple of bits of meat and a few salad leaves. The staff here seem to think intolerances is a political opinion that has to be punished lol.

Unreal eats for a central London pub. 10/10 would dine again.

Legendary Farringdon pub with Mediterranean food: I had panzanella salad but could always recommend the famous bife ana steak sandwich (if I had not stopped eating beef since I last visited a long time ago)

Charming casual eatery, with a focus on grilled dishes. Had the onglet, cooked to perfection and paired with delicious beetroot.

Old school pub. Vibes we good in here. Food was great.

I'll start by saying the food in here is very good. I'll end by saying this is the first pub in at least 3 years that actually offers no GF beer neither tap nor bottle. And the draught cider (Stowford Press) is the same they have on draught at Wetherspoons at £1.80. Rank tramp juice. The chenin is alright but the lack of choice in 2024 is daft.

Terrific rum steak sandwich and great wine!

One of my favourite pubs in the city. The atmosphere is buzzing and the decor of the place is a blend of modern and rustic. Staff is friendly and service is quite solid. Obviously drinks are great but the food is surprisingly excellent. We ordered a variety of dishes such as the vongole, burrata, chickpea curry and sausages. All were really good but the star of the show was hands down the grilled tuna served with a side of cucumber and tomato salad. Super simple and absolutely amazing, it was tender and flavourful. Highly recommend this place with both friends and/or colleagues!

Don’t let the aesthetics deceive you. Legit one of the best steak sandwiches I’ve ever had.

The food was really good. Service was great and atmosphere good for adults. Not really for kids. The other thing is that they don’t take reservations and they don’t help you finding tables either, so you would have to fight for one against others looking for tables. We sat outside since we had kids, but we were freezing. Overall, nothing to complain about.

We booked a table as we had heard great things about this place. We booked a table and despite arriving on time we had to wait over 15 minutes to get our table. No worries as we had ordered drinks so we were OK. When we got our table we then realised there is zero waiter service so you have to order at the bar. This could be fine but you can only order where people are ordering drinks and the place was very busy. If they had a specific area to order food only then this would sort this out but they don't and it feels like they are very short staffed. The server who bought our food was very nice but she was incredibly stressed. The place is just too busy for the small amount of staff to deal with. Chaotic is probably the best term. The atmosphere is great and the food is tasty, however never been to a gastro pub before where you cannot order any sides of veg or chips. A few tweaks here and there will make this place amazing but as it is we will not be visiting for food again. A drink yes no worries but the food element needs work.

Great spot for gastropub fare - the cod, the linguine, the pork and the veal were delicious. Service was good and the ambiance is nice. They don’t take reservations, which is a bit inconvenient as it’s very difficult to get a table and space is very limited, which made the experience a bit challenging for me. Still, it’s worth going to at least once for the food and the service.

Went to try their so called famous steak sandwich. Very disappointing. It was just a bun with dry lettuce and some not so flavorful steak. Super plain, not much flavor and very poor presentation. I feel like I’ve been robbed after paying 17 pounds for that! Not to mention they don’t do any type of sides. I don’t know any pub that doesn’t at least do fries.

Steak sandwich is impeccable- must have

Food is high quality and wine is exceptional value for money. Unfortunately, if you intend to eat here and are in a group of less than 5 people, you can’t book a table and the tables in the pub aren’t prioritised for food. If they’re reserved, there is no sign telling you what time those people might arrive. Getting a walk in table before 8.30/9pm is impossible on a midweek evening. This is how I ended up eating a very nice £23 prawn and monkfish stew on a windowsill. Everything about the unfriendly service mentioned below is true (and to be fair to staff, they’re managing an impossible system). When I asked for a finger bowl as my (delicious) stew featured large shell-on prawns, they looked at me blankly and I had to explain what one was. Not really what I’d expected for a well known gastropub. In summary, come here for great value wine, don’t bother navigating the challenges of eating unless you’re in a group and can book a table that is worthy of the food.

A wonderful London institution. Very small downstairs, but the food speaks for itself. The steak sandwich is exactly what it should be. Nothing fancy, just well executed tasty cuisine. Prices reflect the ethos of the pub, however they are on the high side (£17 for steak sandwich), but the portions are excellent. 100% recommended

Very busy pub, with fresh food cooked in front of your very eyes. Lamb lasagne was excellent. Saffron cheesecake was amazing, possibly one of the best desserts in London.

Ordered grilled feta salad and a portion of Parmesan fries. The salad was delicious but the fries were overcooked. Shame . Atmosphere and staff really warm and welcoming. Great pub

We arrived shortly after the evening opening on a weekday and it was full already. Lucky for us, we waiting a short while for a table and it was so worth it. Food was spectacular and the atmosphere is what you would expect, a pub. Menu changes every day. I had the traditional steak sandwich known to The Eagle, two thumbs up!

Excellent food, great atmosphere, value for money. You can watch the chefs while they work, they definitely earn their money! it gets pretty busy so come early or be prepared to wait - also no problem as there's enough space to have a few drinks at the bar in the meantime

Limited menu maybe 9 options, including lamb, pork, tuna, bream and of course the steak sandwich. The last two I have shown. Many different lager/IPA/ale options. Staff were friendly, room was very busy. Order at the bar

The style feels like you're visiting your old aunt or something. I like the fact that the plates are all different and have an old style. The food is very nice and the portions generous for the price. And the Portuguese desserts were great! Edit: I haven't had the opportunity to visit in the last 4 years. Last weekend I was nearby so I stopped by and the food is still really good. 👌🏼

The Bifeana Steak Sandwich, is something to cherish! The first Gastropub and it has a reputation for the steak sandwich! It is a must! The perfect combination of salt and a little kick in the balance the flavours. Perfection!
