Dunnichen Stone in Angus

As usual, food was excellent and staff very friendly. Great value for money and a large menu. Clean and well laid out restaurant. Would highly recommend.

Twice we tried to have dinner at the Dunnichen Stone. The first time we were turned away because of 'short staffed'. The second time, on Friday evening 23rd August 2024 at 8pm (!), we were told that they had stopped serving. Not surprised there was hardly anyone there.

Booked a table for 6pm. Arrived slightly late but welcomed by friendly staff and taken to a reserved table. Waitress came over promptly to take a drinks order and advised us that there was no fish, no gammon and no Sunday roast available. Our children ordered macaroni cheese and we ordered lasagne and a steak and ale pie. At this point we were advised they were understaffed and the food might take slightly longer than usual. We weren't in a rush but were very hungry as we had had a long drive so didn't want to leave and try and find somewhere else so late on. The food when it arrived was well presented and portion size was good apart from the macaroni starter which looked tiny - for £5.50 I would expect something that is more than 2 mouthfuls. The steak and ale pie was ok but not worth the money. And then it all went downhill from there. The lasagne had absolutely no taste, next to no proper meat in it and was very watery - neither of us would eat it. The macaroni tasted like it had no cheese in it and our kids who never refuse macaroni normally wouldn't eat it. The staff when we complained were apologetic and the manager gave us a discount however the fact that a family of 5 sent back four practically untouched plates of food and still had to pay over £50 is bordering on criminal. This is the worst meal out we have ever had and will definitely not be in a rush to go back.

Easy on line booking system, dog friendly allowing us to take our dog. Friendly and helpful staff. Good value meals especially with 30% off main meals voucher. Lovely outside sitting area and plenty car parking

Food was a bit slow in coming after ordering , this may have been because kitchen had just opened , but when it did arrive the food was professionally served by Emily and Lucy who also kept us topped up with drinks and the food was excellent and enjoyed by all 8 of us, Thankyou .

What a find. Though quiet (which we like) we were welcomed by Emily (front of house) who showed us to an appropriate dog friendly area. The menu was varied and provided a good selection meat and vegetarian/ vegan options. The proportion of food was a welcome change and was well priced. The atmosphere was great, Emily was attentive but respectful allowing us to enjoy our food without overt interruption. The restaurant area was clean, bright and spacious. We all enjoyed our lunch, we will certainly visit again :) would highly recommend.
