My father came to the UK from the US for my wedding, and booked into the hotel for the nights after to stay in Shrewsbury. I drove them into town around 11am, which is quite early (he had contacted them asking for an early check in, and no one replied). The door was locked, and my two phone calls went unanswered (yes I was calling from a UK number, I live here). Despite the fact that an Amazon delivery driver was there and called a contact number and received an answer (and was told he would have to wait 10/15 minutes just for someone to come take delivery!). With no answer and no indication of how long we might have to wait, and being very nervous about how helpful they would be having ignored both my calls and his previous messages, I took them to a different hotel. I’d have been happy to wait until a designated time, but without any answer and with all of my wedding things to get back to my own home, waiting indefinitely until someone came or decided to answer the phone was not an option. Perhaps staying in the hotel itself is lovely, but if there is no communication or commitment to even answering calls when guests need assistance, I’m not sure how it can be a 5-star hotel.

Booked in here on a Saturday night, only a few tables eating so that should have sounded alarm bells. We waiting nearly 20 minutes for two drinks and the rude person just said they were short staffed ! We ordered and by now only one other table was eating but took OVER an hour for such a simple dish ! Not even a sorry for the wait, so we ate what was in front of us and then stopped ! My food was so so salty it was uneatable ! I was told again they were short staffed so a bar person was cooking and they were't very good, well that was an understatement. We left owing for four cokes, two mains and presumed as we had not eaten the food it would be discounted of free, O no ! they charged us full PLUS a 15% service charge ! Truly the worst experience in Shrewsbury.

The service and location are excellent. There's very little to dislike about the food (apart from the terribly scrapy plates!) My major quibble is the price which I felt is too much for what you get, particularly the wine. HArd to fault in many ways but excellent Sunday lunches are available at a more competitive price in the area.

Visited here for a large group afternoon tea, the sandwiches and cakes were tasty, although the numbers were a bit odd (3 of some sandwiches, 4 of others). The only thing that let it down was slow service with tea and coffee, we also had someone who is vegan with us, they catered for them with food but couldn’t offer any dairy free milk which was a shame, if you offer to cater for a vegan person I’d expect them to provide an alternative to standard milk for drinks.

Lovely setting and food good but service disappointing. No one to meet and greet just went in and hung about until we went to the bar to let them know. Tried to sit us in a draughty doorway near the till. Food arrived promptly and was good but only 4 stars as the service was minimal for a fairly expensive restaurant I’d expect excellent service.

We stayed at Draper's Hall last weekend, and treated ourselves to a meal for my partner's birthday. The food was beautiful, with a lovely menu with great vegetarian choices. However the service badly let it down on several occasions.Firstly, we ordered a cocktail at the bar. On bringing it over, the barman spilled my drink all over my phone. He apologised, but then did nothing! It was left to my partner to go and ask for a cloth. Eventually a waitress came over with some serviettes - but this wasn't enough to wipe the sticky cocktail off my phone. Luckily it wasn't damaged - but the barman should have come to clean up his mistake and should have offered me a replacement drink. He took no responsibility. The amuse bouche was lovely, and I was enjoying it immensely until the waitress took it away while I was literally still eating it! I should have said something, but equally in a restaurant of this caliber I shouldn't have had to.No exaggeration (I looked at my watch!), we waited 55 minutes between our starter and our main course. During this time there was no explanation offered, and no apology was given. This is simply unacceptable. Finally we ordered port with our cheese board, but it didn't arrive until we had nearly finished the cheese. Why such a wait? All of these failings could be easily rectified with better training of staff, and better supervision. Management were notably absent during the entire evening. We weren't the only ones experiencing slow service that night - a group of 4 who were sitting when we arrived, were still eating their main course when we had left our table! We loved the food, but the experience was marred by repeated examples of poor service which fell well below our expectations from such an expensive restaurant.

Had dinner here recently and found the occasion to be very stimulating; the surroundings are fascinating. A bottle of prosecco Fabio Ceschin (£29) to start with (there were four of us) got things under way and the amuse bouche was a small bowl of parsnip veloute with almonds, plus beetroot bread with truffle butter. I had a pig's trotter croquette, then beer battered plaice fillets with pont neuf potatoes, both very tasty and very filling. Also consumed by the others were celeriac veloute with truffle and beef wellington, rabbit and chicken breast, pumpkin tortellini and Aberdeen Angus steak. The beef wellington was enormous, say almost four inches of fillet in two pieces in pastry (a doggy bag was requested, so the uneaten part was consumed later by our friend's labradoodle!) - at £32 this was not a cheap option, tasty indeed but overgenerous for us. My rhum baba was very dry and I would venture to say that it had somehow avoided the rum syrup - I mentioned this to the waiter but got no reaction. We also had a bottle of pinot grigio from the Veneto and a Viuda Negra crianza 2016, both very good. At £60+ each this was fair but I thought the meal lacked a bit of finesse.

I didn't know about this place and only found it whilst looking for a last minute place I could book online, but I'm glad we did. First of all, the building, just off a quiet street in the town centre, is very olde-worlde and interesting, oak beams and ancient paintings. Then, they cooked a special vegan meal for my wife, soup, a plate of roast veg and a fruity dessert, all beautifully presented and full of strong flavours. I had scollops, halibut and a chocolate cake, equally tasty, all decent sized plates too. Special mention to the sommelier who dissuaded us from the more expensive wine as we wanted a smooth silky one. In the end we had two bottles :) An excellent meal, we'll be back!

Wasn’t busy so pretty much had the best table in the house and got to chose which one we would prefer. Had welcome champagne as requested and a Happy Birthday plate at the end. The chefs also gave us complimentary food before our starters and at the end of the meal which was a nice touch. However this week we had a table for four at lunch, the antipasto was very boring and expensive, unimaginative food at a highish price equals in my opinion poor value and a disappointing experience for our friends who we were introducing for the first time. It's a lovely location; an atmospheric space that gives a sense of history and occasion and the service is excellent. The food is priced at high end dining level and as such it should be executed with finesse and each dish should be cooked to perfection. I didn't feel that ours were. I love scallops and in this instance I felt they were a tad overcooked. Not so much to mar the overall enjoyment of the dish but enough to question the £16 price tag for a starter. My Partners Wigmore Brie Tortellini on the other hand hit the mark perfectly. For our main courses my husband's slow roasted corn fed chicken had been roasted for a little too long and was bordering on dry. The pearl barley broth that accompanied it was definitely needed and probably saved the dish. My Loin of Welsh Lamb with a mini shepherds pie on the other hand was cooked to perfection. My only gripe here was the portion size of the lamb, it was very small. Desserts were my biggest disappointment. Over complicated, both in design and presentation. More attention I felt to the aesthetics rather than the marriage of ingredients and taste. Baked apricot with apricot mousse, lavender and hazelnut shortbread was my husbands choice and he said he enjoyed it. I tasted it and that small amount was too much for me. Lavender was the prominent flavour here so much so that I found it unpleasant. I had the celebration of strawberry but didn't find much to celebrate. Again the aromatics were too strong - a better dish than the apricot but disappoint for someone who likes a good pudding. Would I return, yes but I would order differently and hope the overall quality improves. It's nearly there but not quite.

The surroundings are really nice and feel warm and homely, the bar and service is really good. The one main thing that lets the food down is the portion size, the lamb main at £26 so not cheap consisted of one carrot very small scoop of mash potato and 5 extremely small pieces of paper think lamb, the quaility and presentation of the food is very good but you will go home Hungary which when paying top money this leaves you feeling very disappointed and Hungary

We arrived on a busy Friday evening and taken to the bar where my wife and I had the most exquisite cocktails. Shortly after we were lead to our table by Chris (I think his name was, forgive me if I'm wrong). We went for the scallops starter which were cooked to perfection. For the main course my wife had the lamb and I chose the steak, both were amazing, cooked perfectly by the very talented chefs. Although my wife didnt have room for the dessert I opted for the chocolate tortelli which for me was the star of the show. Excellently executed and packed full of flavour. "Fine Dining" is a frequently used culinary description which, in my experience, more often than not fails to deliver - Drapers Hall certainly is a fine dining venue that truly delivers in every sense; not only are the dishes inventive, imaginative and delicious, they are expertly prepared and presented. The result is a gastronomic treat for the eye, nose and palate. My favourite experience is to indulge in the tasting menu with wine flight, where every course has an accompanying glass of specially selected wine to compliment the dish, mmmmm fantastic and great for a special occasion. On my most recent visit I noticed they also offer a "Casual Dining Menu" which compares favourably with the offerings of, might I say, lesser establishments but in the unique setting of this fine medieval building, you will really experience the wow factor. Whether you are local or just visiting, you really should treat yourself and dine at Drapers Hall for a memorable experience. My favourite restaurant and for good reason.

As an itinerant Scotsman, I often gripe about the lack of "fine dining" (although it is not a term I am fond of) restaurants in Shropshire, believing that following the closing of Chequers in Montgomery, they no longer existed (notwithstanding a recent visit to The View at Hencote). I have visited Drapers Hall three times under it's current management in the last year or so, and chatted to the owner. On each occasion the food has been good, but service on the first occasion was patchy, and it was empty on the second occasion; when I had a fantastic fish and chips for lunch. The owners have taken the unusual stance of not compromising on the quality of the offer, and keeping things low key until they got it right. My recent dinner there with friends was excellent, with great service , in this historic space. Fine dining status achieved, and credit due for persistence in making it so [ review delayed by lassitude! ]

Beautiful medieval architecture and superficial ambience can cover only so much. To call this restaurant “Fine Dining” is borderline delusional. I dread to think what type of ego monster prowls the kitchen if they think the food presented is anything but insulting. Uninspired conception, competent execution (1st grade catering college more like) and lazy contemptuous presentation. If you call yourself fine dining, then you’d better have the game to play. This chef doesn’t warrant warming the subs bench. £100 plus gets you;

We tried to order cocktails on arrival but these took over 30 minutes to arrive one at a time. I ordered the vegetarian main course of spinach gnocchi and was amazed to be served 3 pieces of gnocchi in total. This would have been small for a starter but as a £16 main course it was beyond a ripoff! The waitress agreed with me and apologised saying ‘the chef was trying the dish out’, she returned it to the kitchen for some potatoes to be added. My partner’s steak was very poor quality and the desserts were very basic. After nearly 3 hours we were served desserts. The bill was £65 per person including a bottle of wine we hadn’t ordered. The head waiter apologised for the disastrous evening explaining they had far too many covers on a Saturday night despite the staff warning the management! We will not be going back

Now I love this restaurant and the atmosphere but I am fed up of being disappointed with the food and frankly some of the service . My wife and I visited a couple of weeks ago the third time this year , but from the outset it all seemed to much trouble to accommodate us.

The food tasted wonderful and although I can’t remember the names of the dishes, I do remember that they blew me away.

Came here to dine with a group of eight friends, had heard it was expensive and a tad pretentious, small portions, that seemed to be the gist of opinions of people. Glad to state it is not expensive, totally unpretentious and the portions are generous! Always best to try things first hand! Furthermore - the food is delicious (full of flavours, cooked to a tee and well presented!). The servers are all brilliant - engaging, smart, well informed and amazingly attentive, caring and focused. The trout starter I had was awesome, the Aberdeen Angus steak was devine! The room is amazing, very historic and the table we dined at was supposed to be 500 years old! RECOMMENDED! 10 out of 10! There seem to be private dining rooms upstairs.

Everyone should try it at least once. You will find something on the menue you have never tried before. Cooked to perfection. One could argue that it is more expensive than some eateries, but you would have to go a long way to find plates of food so expertly put together. They are a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds.

We dined at Drapers yesterday evening as a party of 11 and had the most wonderful evening. Upon arrival we all had a gorgeous cocktail; I had a cosmopolitan and a French 95 and both were perfect.

4 of us went to Drapers Hall for dinner. We all had the taster menu at £60 per person. The food was nice but not worth £60. Especially when the cheapest wine was £32 a bottle. £40 would have been better value. We knew it was a taster menu but a single scallop for a fish course was a bit sparse. Service was fine and ambience good

This restaurant has a very special ambience with service that is the very best I've experienced. Food was very good with a chef pushing close to Michelin standard cuisine. Highly impressed and will surely revisit when next in the area.

This was our first visit to Draper's Hall. We chose the a la carte (rather than the tasting) menu and enjoyed each course well enough. If you like dining in a novel, historic venue then you'll enjoy the location.

I enjoyed a wonderful pre-Christmas lunch here with my brother. We have a tradition of meeting for lunch in late November/early December. As Graham lives in Shrewsbury I travelled up from Abergavenny and we went to Draper's Hall.

We visited as a party of 4 on Sat 29th Dec. We chose to have the tasting menu which contained a nice variety of dishes. Our favourites were the chalk stream trout and pheasant courses but it was all very tasty and well presented. My only comment would be that we felt the portions were a little small, with the exception of the cheese board which was perfect for the four of us to share. The service while we were there was excellent, attentive but not over bearing.

we went as a group of 16 for a christmas party and had a room upstairs. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, so we expected something special. All the meals had been pre booked so the kitchen knew how many of each was ordered. The meals were small [very] and one guest asked about the size of his fish which was the main course as it was so small. It is overpriced and over rated. we have had better and more filling meals in pubs. you pay for the location and the name. will not be going there again.

As a party of twelve, we enjoyed the use of an upstairs private dinning room. Started with drinks and a variety of canapés. We had previously decided that everyone would have roast beef. What an excellent choice, with very good roast potatoes and root vegetables. A variety of puddings + cheese, followed. The red & white wines were very acceptable. The beef deserves a second mention, it was the tastiest and most tender, that I have ever eaten.

Booked hotel and private dining for nine family members. From the start after a slight language/booking hickup with Kat we were warmly welcomed by Rob Alex and of cos Kat. The rooms are to die for all individual and fabulous. The dinning was excellent with a private room served by the brilliant Jemima . Great food and wine all night and bar drinks later. After they had closed their doors myself joined the staff for a late drink and even a cheeky pizza slice ...Thanks Paul ! . Breakfast was ok but not enough staff to cope with 9 hungry people . waited far to long and when it did arrive eggs were hard . Need more staff please . Poor lady I think Alex? Was rushed off her feet bless her . Will back to Shrewsbury and will only stay at one place . Draper's

Great location adjacent to the Mere with views. Busy, and expensive for what you get. Menu limited. But location makes it very popular
