Arrived without booking, as we were unfamiliar with the area, and although the restaurant itself was full, we were generously offered a table, albeit in the bar area, which we were happy to accept. It would have been quite possible that we might have had slow service, even forgotten, but nothing of the sort; we were promptly seated with menus, our orders taken, and our meals served, all without undue delay by friendly restaurant and bar staff. The food was simple but delicious and perfectly cooked, in generous portions, and all concerned should feel proud of their contributions to such an excellent experience. Bravo!

We live nearby and our family and visitors always ask to go to the Duggie. There is a lively public bar upstairs with a couple of quiet little booths, great local beer pool table, sport TV. Downstairs is a nicely set out, quiet, cosy restaurant. Our parky family always find something burger/ flatbread themed from the menu that they love. Big portions, nice desserts, all nicely presented, and that fabulous local beer (brewed just down the street).

It’s not going to win any prizes for haute cuisine but ‘The Dougie’ consistently serves up fabulously tasty standard fair. Been here many times and never been disappointed. The mixed filled flatbreads are heavenly but don’t expect to go home without a doggy bag. This is seriously good value for the money. And the bar has the local brewery -Borderlands Brewery- on tap which is a real bonus. All round thumbs up.

The Duggie has it all. There is a traditional public bar with the local town's own beer, and a couple of quiet corners for a family group to sit and natter before going downstairs to the restaurant. Some lovely, unusual decor and a menu perfect for families. This is not just bar food. We chose mainly posh burgers and loaded flatbreads but the menu is full of tempting stuff. Huge portions, all well cooked and served. And not at all expensive. On sunny days there is also a quiet secret beer garden

Just two nights in this lovely old 'border town'. Sadly the town is looking tired and forlorn, having lost almost all local industry (once a thriving tweed mill centre) Much the same could be said of the Douglas, but Rob, Jason and the staff really try hard to welcome and care for their guests. Nothing seems to be too much trouble. The hotel has a long and celebrated history yet the rooms are extremely clean and very comfortable. The restaurant is exceptional and all the dishes show flair and imagination. The whole team are to be congratulated.

Came here upon a recommendation by one of the locals. We had looked this place up on-line and you could download a menu but for some reason there are no prices there. This needs sorting out as it is off putting. A starter, main and pint will set you back around £18-25. All the food here is freshly prepared from quality ingredients. But unfortunately the recipes need some tweaking. Portion size is large, ideal for hikers and cyclists after a long day out.For starters I had haggis stuffed mushroom. The haggis and mushroom were delicious but the lettuce served with it doesn't work. Rocket would be better. It also had mozzarella on top where a small amount of blue cheese may have been better. The soup my friend had looked nice. The meat lasagne I had for mains was ok but I have made better myself. The ragu lacked herbs and all I could taste was meat and tomato sauce. The cheese on top is not necessary and is off putting. Yet again the lettuce made a reappearance. The specials, dessert and wine menu are on some large (portable) boards which I don't think is necessary. When not in use these are placed on the bar and detract from the bar area of the restaurant. A page slipped into the menus would suffice. The staff are friendly and polite and the restaurant is spotless.

Three of us dined at The Douglas on a very quiet Wednesday lunchtime. All three of us had the haddock and chips (recommended by mine host as having been delivered from Eyemouth that morning) and we all found it excellent. For a cheaper, lunch menu portion, the fish was plenty big enough and it was cooked to perfection. A light, crispy batter (which seemed to have mustard seeds or some such in it for extra flavour) and the fish could not have been better cooked. Excellent home-cooked chips and a very creamy tartare sauce were the accompaniments. All in all, this meal could not be faulted and we will return.

I really was looking forward to dining at The Douglas! My expectations were really high, perhaps a little too high because I left feeling very underwhelmed! The staff were pleasant enough and that is a good thing. The atmosphere was a bit lacking, there wasn't much laughter and I don't recall any background music playing, not that that's an issue. The thing that left me underwhelmed was the food - the very reason I was excited about eating there in the first place - after reading the glowing reviews.I always judge a place by their steak and chips! Good steak and chips usually means everything else is great! But mine just didn't say, 'You know you want me!'It was a good sized steak, so there's no complaints about portion size, I think it was simply the presentation if the meal - is there any need for a bed of rocket for a steak? Not in my opinion - it should stand by itself and not need any support! I thought the onions were put on the plate as an after thought.I found the flavour of the steak a little peculiar, but I stand to be corrected if it was from an organically raised beast from the local area. Some shiitake mushrooms would have lifted the meal, with some asparagus perhaps? When I come to Scotland, I want the very best that Scotland has to offer, great steaks, amazing seafood and stunning game!I'm afraid I didn't get that on this visit - which is a shame - I got ordinary.I know there's so much more - please let's have some!!I will try The Douglas again, because it might be wonderful next time.......

The Douglas looks very unpromising from the outside and the restaurant is in the basement. There's a decent menu, however, and an intelligent and serious kitchen at work. There are some interesting choices on the specials menu (e.g. excellent guinea fowl; an intriguing haggis and mozarella starter; etc.) and a bargain summer menu with a main course and drink for a tenner. The steak pie would pass muster in a much more upmarket restaurant. Vegetables are fresh and plentiful. Staff are keen and helpful. Fair wine selection and a decent pint of proper beer (a rarity in this part of the world). Interesting and slightly chaotic decor reflecting (I would guess) the owner's period of residence in Saudi Arabia or somewhere similar. Worth a visit! We went twice.

As it’s a small popular place booking in advance is probably recommended. We were looking for a table on a Saturday night during the Spring Fling event in the region so left a message with the restaurant whilst traveling to Kirkcudbright. The owner returned the call and fortunately, thanks to a cancellation, was able to arrange our reservation for dinner the following night - a promising start. On the evening of our visit the bistro was busy however there was still a relaxed ambiance about the place. The sole waitress taking orders and attending to the tables was pleasant and seemed knowledgeable about the menu and the only other member of staff appeared to be the owner/chef. He popped out and chatted with us towards the end of service to allow the waitress to get home as a few diners like us were finishing off drinks and still to receive their desserts and settle their bills. He seemed sociable and relaxed and clearly hadn’t adopted the Gordon Ramsay approach to the restaurant business. Being a small place we were not surprised at the outset that the menu was limited to about half a dozen items per course including specials however it gave a decent choice in our view. We both ordered a “special” for starters - Tempura Battered Prawns (£7.95). As was the case throughout the evening, the dish was served up to the table in good time. Six king prawns each with a sweet chilli sauce with a salad garnish and balsamic. It was a tasty start. For mains my wife ordered the Seabass, served with king prawns, a white wine & tomato sauce and fresh vegetables (£21.00). I had Duck a L’Orange (£21.95) which was another item from the specials board. Neither of the mains dishes would be winning prizes for presentation however most importantly they both tasted good. The fish was nicely cooked and my wife enjoyed the other parts of the dish. The duck was also good albeit the chef was later surprised I’d left the fat on the plate. I queried if people normally ate the fat and he commented that they often do and that he rendered it to make it more appealing. Thankfully this was not an overly fatty duck breast in any case but I was quite happy to leave the small amount I did on the plate. For dessert my wife had Sticky Toffee Pudding with ice cream and I had a Citrus Tart served with a small selection of fresh berries and cream. The puddings were £6.50 each and both enjoyable. Overall we liked our experience at the bistro and with our three course meal for two costing just under £72 we thought it was reasonable value for money. We had added a bottle of NZ Yealands Sauvignon Blanc wine for £25 only just keeping the bill under £100. A walk to the harbour to watch the sunset as we headed back to our accommodation rounded off the evening well.

The Riverbank really is a little gem of a restaurant. We arrived cold from a days walking and the staff were lovely and helpful in our food choices. We'll definitely be back.

Amazing customer service. I can't speak for the hotel itself, however I couldn't make the original date booked, so the hotel went out of their way to contact me themselves when I was waiting to hear from Hotels.com, and were so accommodating. Very impressed with this level of communication and friendliness 👏

The past few times I've been to Dumfries, I always stop in to Mrs Greens Tea Lounge for some cake and a mug of something hot--or, in this case, for some lunch. The service is always friendly, the atmosphere inviting, and the food tasty. Highly recommend!
