I've been to several award- winning fish and chip shops and this is better than any of them.... The cod and chips was perfectly cooked, service was friendly and efficient and prices are excellent value. Strongly recommended. Thank you both.

We’ve used Docherty's fish and chip shop several times before for takeaway fish and chips and found them to be perfectly fried every time. The chips are great, and the locally caught fish is just delicious! We planned a ten-pin bowling night in Yeovil to celebrate my wife’s birthday along with 10 other friends and thought we’d give Docherty's a try for a fish and chip supper on the way home as we’d never eaten in the restaurant upstairs before. The guys were great at Docherty's. Booking was easy, the welcome was warm and they didn’t mind us moving a couple of tables around so all twelve of us could eat, drink and be merry together following our jolly but competitive outing to the bowling alley. We all went for the special, 2 x fish and chips with a bottle of wine for each couple. The food and the wine were swiftly delivered by the cheerful waitress and we all got stuck into what may well be the best fish and chip supper in the land. The restaurant is basic but cosy. It’s refreshingly unpretentious and homely. An open fire roaring with a mixture of smaller tables for couples and larger bench-style tables for a bunch of friends like us. The small but essential little bar also upstairs to the side so you don’t have to travel far for a top up. We had a great time at Docherty's. The service was great as was the food. If you’re looking for a brilliant, traditional fish and chip shop/restaurant in a beautiful historic town, this is the place.

As a party of twelve we enjoyed prompt service, very reasonable prices, and excellent fish and chips! The chips were perfectly cooked, the fish was delicious and the batter light and crispy. Generous portion sizes too. This was our first visit and we’ll definitely be back! The meal deal for two: fish and chips and a bottle of wine for £20 was really good value, and the white wine was very drinkable.

the q outside was testament to the popularity of this place for the locals - but it moved quickly and was worth the wait - absolutely delicious cod and chips. Friendly staff and service too.

A visit to Sherborne is always enjoyable, perhaps taking in an agreeable local hostelry too, but an early evening supper at Docherty's, located upstairs at the Abbey Frier, is a must-do. Typically there's a steady stream of customers for the ground-floor shop, undoubtedly a good sign, but through a side door and up a short flight of stairs and you'll find the first-floor dining room. It's all about the fish and justifiably they're proud of it: super-fresh, only a light batter, fried to golden crisp perfection, chips too of course, maybe add in a bottle of wine, and there you have it. Straightforward, not a lot of fuss and not too many frills, but very good. This is what they do and they do it very well. Bang on! It's a good spot. But you'll need to book; eating in here is very popular. The chip shop downstairs is open throughout the week but upstairs is not, so it's worth checking.

We went to Sherbourne because of the reviews on trip Advisor for this place plus the Abbey reviews. The service was so friendly and quick but the best part was the meal itself. Big portions served hot and delicious tasting fish and chips. Sorry we live so far away but next time in England it will be on my list as a place to revisit.

I visit Abbey Friar takeaway frequently but had never been in Docherty’s bar. It is certainly hidden away, it felt so cosy with a lovely atmosphere, I loved the rustic feel and the service was the quickest I’ve had in my life. Fish and chips were somehow even better than the excellent standard we usually receive from their takeaways!! Big portions and tastes amazing. I took a friend who is Greek and has never eaten fish and chips before - we both finished our plates so it was definitely a success! Even the wine was great and I don’t usually like red wine. 2x cod and chips with a bottle of wine for £20, probably the best value meal you’ll find in Sherborne with lovely staff serving you!

We booked the Abbey Friar restaurant rather than a takeaway as we were going to a concert in the Abbey. Upstairs is cosy and needs more lighting but atmosphere and service was great. We had the two fish dinner and wine combo at £20. The cod was probably the best ever, incredibly white, fresh and flaky, terrific light batter and the chips were spot on. Only thing missing was brown bread and butter Keep up the good work!

Buenas porciones, peces enormes, no grasienta, blanda guisantes - precioso! Personal amable, servicio rápido - pequeño bar con sidras, cervezas y refrescos. You have to try this place. The best fish and chips. They have a small dining area upstairs. Its not flash but its not about the decor. These could be the best fish and chips in southern england. Don't take my word for it try them for yourself. It may pay to book if you want a table. My only comment would be a little side salad or coleslaw would top it off.

This is the best fish and chips I have tasted in a long while. Very crisp, thin batter, succulent cod and chips so tasty I think they must have been cooked in dripping. Proper job and served with a smile. No wonder there was a long queue. It was worth it.

If there are better fish & chip shops in Dorset, I want to know where they are.The food in here is fabulous, the queues are testimony to this. I had 15 people ahead of me & when I left another 20 or so behind me.Their fish is delicious, I had the cod from the Faroe Islands, the batter was light and the fish perfectly cooked.Chips might have been cooked in dripping, (will have to ask) they were just perfect as were the mushy peas.Great value & excellent service!

We've been going here for our fish and chips for so long now, it's become a fortnightly habit. They do not scrimp on the portion of fish you get and you never get a square bit of fish cut to size like some other places. They show on a blackboard in the shop were their cod is caught and also where the potatoes are from too. A excellent friendly service and you are always made to feel welcome. The food is cooked to order, so there is no food drying out, waiting to be bought. I am always recommending it to my friends.

My sister, her husband and I visit Doherty's Bar for Friday night fish and chips regularly and I can honestly say this place is a gem! I grew up by the sea in Ireland and love seafood. I know how hard it is to find this unassuming little meal cooked just right. The batter is crisp and light, the chips are made with floury potatoes so they are fluffy and crisp. Service is quiet and attentive and the price is excellent. I wish I liked whiskey so I could sample their range but I hate the stuff! The house white is a fair price for a fair wine. Can't beat this place for value and consistency. If the idea of cooking on a Friday after a hard weeks work is too much to bare, take a trip to Doherty's, you won't regret it.

After reading reviews about Docherty;s fish bar thought we would try it whilst visiting Sherbourne. It was the worst fish and chips we have eaten. The chips were so dry could not eat then the scampi I had was just edible, husband had the cod which he said was'nt too bad but not good. The only good thing was that it was inexpensive although a complete waste of money.

Awesome chip shop. Really great staff who are happy to help and clearly strive to deliver the best fish and chips. The batter which it is all about is perfect, really great crunch and perfectly cooked fish inside. All the extras are there, pickled eggs ect. The only downside is they rarely get rock (dogfish) which for me makes the best fish and chips, the'll say cod is and they should know!! This place is always a winner, consistently good.

Collected a takeaway from this small unassuming chip shop, whilst waiting after my order was taken a friendly banter between cooks and queuing public passed the time. Fish was placed in separate bag to chips and away home. The fish tasted first class, skin was removed on the cod so that all the batter could be consumed, chips were well cooked.

Like one of the last reviewers said worst fish and chips ever had. I hope owner is aware how this business is not half as good as it once was. Visited 10/10/24 about 5pm. Girl who took the order was more interested in looking at phone and forgot to give me change. Then the fish and chips, which over the years were always good, were tasteless , batter overcooked and fish was mushy inside. We really should have complained but put half eaten in the bin. Will be trying somewhere else next year. Over the year we visit Lyme about 6 times but we will be trying different take a way when we come again.
