Atmosphere: not too much light. The place is not very stylish Service: slow, don't care too much about their guests Food: a Mediterranean food lover will not be impressed Overall verdict: no reasons to hurry back

Last news 20th September it was closed. Local paper tried to find out what was happening but no one knows why or for how long. Bookings were possible online but restaurant was closed.

This is the best place to go for an amazing steak dinner, cooked to perfection great service friendly staff by far the best eating experience in Hitchin.

Staff were friendly, although not very well presented, when we arrived our waiter (owner) had his shirt hanging out and covered in stains. Very quiet restaurant considering it was a bank holiday Friday and the rest of the town was buzzing. Our meal was pleasant, when we came to ask for the bill (very expensive bill) there was no one left in the restaurant, the waiting staff were no where to be found, we called out and nothing, I went to go check in the kitchen and the lights were all off, no staff and the kitchen was filthy. We eventually tracked down our waiter / (owner) who was out the front chatting. We had been waiting 15 + minutes with no one around. I would not go back.

What a lovely friendly restaurant, delicious food amazing service from friendly owners and staff, food was fresh and presentation was excellent, definitely on my to go to list and would advise all to go and enjoy the Deroka.

Location: close to Hitchin market square in Sun street Atmosphere: slightly dark and has a little of a cave feeling Service: the restaurant was empty and the showed no interest in delivering food and drinks in a rush. It was not what you hope for. Food & drink: you get get what you pay for. Overall underwhelming experience and we will not hurry back. Sun street is packed with a lot of nice restaurants.

I hardly ever write reviews but Deroka were outstanding. We ordered a takeaway, the restaurant rang to apologise that part of the order hadn’t been collected, so they sent a second bike to deliver it and added a desert ‘on the House’. All the food was delicious, going the extra mile on service for a takeaway was special.

Visited Hitchin for a weekend and walked into this gorgeous restaurant. Lucky to get a table! Well I love a mixed grill kebab and this was fabulous. Tender yet grilled to perfection and transported me to the Mediterranean! Thank you to the host and staff. We will be back !

Upon arrival at the restaurant my expectations fell as its fair to say it doesnt really look the best. However once we started eating my mood changed, we ordered a number of starters to share and all were good, if anything perhaps some of them were too big! The mains were also very good, i had some very tender lamb and all the trimmings were also good! Will definitely return

You notice the lively though not overbearing vibe as soon as you walk in the door. It feels convivial and upbeat but also relaxed. We took a table for 4 and enjoyed some delicious Turkish starters followed by more international fare for the main course (the menu has steaks etc in addition to Turkish grills and so on). Mine was very good (Aberdeen Angus fillet) and the service was impeccable. None of us live in Hitchin but next time we are in town we will be back.

I don’t usually take the time to write reviews, but this was honestly one of the best dining experiences and best food I have ever had in a restaurant. I know that’s a very grand statement, but it was honestly wonderful. Between my husband and I we had borek, Turkish sausage, mixed grill, the Deroka kofte (which was my favourite - absolutely delicious), and a nice bottle of wine. The chap who was front of house (I think the owner) and the waitress were both really friendly and the service was attentive. We were asked if it was a special occasion - I told him it was my birthday - and he made us both a cocktail on the house. Will be back and would highly recommend.

Had a really lovely and long lunch here a few days ago. Was made to feel very welcome by the owner who was particularly knowledgeable about the various wines. Our steaks were so delicious and tender and the starters were top notch too. Will definitely be going back soon.

We came here for the first time yesterday early evening after seeing it on Tripadvisor, and we weren't disappointed. There was a warm and lovely atmosphere, the staff were friendly and very welcoming, and the food was wonderful. We will definitely be back!

Went this evening with my family, I had the lamb and mint burger and we also got a hot meze, the food was very nice. The staff were friendly and service was quick, would highly recommend.

From the moment we arrived, which was a touch early from our booking time, we were made comfortable and welcome. Our order was collected promptly and without any fuss, shortly after the menus were given to us. And the drinks and food were delivered to our table without too much of a wait, and considering it was a busy Friday night, I thought the service was excellent. The food was delicious, from the white bait and calamari to start, to the wild boar burger and lamb skewers, and to finish the tiramisu and crème brulé, were exactly the right amount of food for us. All washed down with a lovely Italian red wine. Many thanks to all the staff for a lovely evening; we'll be back!

We regularly eat here and were not disappointed this time. Despite there not being many customers, we enjoyed the warm and welcoming atmosphere, delicious food and convivial host. We'll be back soon.

Lovely meal out, very hospitable host and team made us feel very welcome -had the mixed grill the flavours were fantastic the lamb in particular so well cooked - lovely to also have roasted vegetables and rice as standard - compliments to the whole team for such a lovely atmosphere

We visited DeRoka on a cold wet Tuesday evening. The atmosphere was warm and the food very good. Particularly recommended is the lamb skewer, perfectly grilled.

Visited with friends and family, so glad we changed our original booking to visit Deroka. Excellent food and wine, attentive staff, well worth a visit. Definitely will book again. Thank you Mehmet

My girlfriend & I stopped in as we was passing and I'm glad we did. The restaurant is lovely and cosy, the service was superb and the food was to die for. I had the swordfish steak & my girlfriend had the lamb kofta, beautifully cooked and very tasty. We will definitely visit again as there is so much I wanna try on the menu. Had a disappointing experience at this restaurant which used to be one of my favourites. The set menu has gone and the mushroom starter we had for £5.20 was literally just ONE tiny mushroom, absolute rip off. Hot drink at the end was cold. Really disappointed.

Will definitely be back. The most tasty food I’ve had in a long time! Excellent environment and friendly service :) Highly recommended!

The food was delicious. The service was amazing, their staff was polite and helpful. Definitely would come back to this place and I would recommend this restaurant if you cannot decide where to eat.

Lovely meal for my birthday, many cocktails to choose from, staff were friendly to accommodate for my friend who doesn’t drink alcohol but still wanted to join in with us having cocktails. So Many options to choose from on the menu, it was a hard choice. The presentation of food was excellent, and the salmon was amazing. Highly recommend.

Food was ok but I've had better kleftico in my time and when I ordered garlic mussels I expected a great crock of mussels in their shells in a rich garlicky sauce, not the miniscule dish that I was charged £6.70 for.  What brings this restaurant down, ultimately, is its customer service.  Now, I can appreciate that in a Spanish/Greek/Italian/Mediterranean restaurant there is perhaps more of a convivial air and relaxed atmosphere.  What this does NOT mean however is that things are sloppy or that anyone should be waiting and waiting for dishes to be served, tables cleared, orders taken etc.  It also means that I do NOT want the manager's arse more or less shoved in my face whilst he stands next to our table and serves choice bottles of wine to some of his favoured regulars at the table next to ours, having first taken - and failed to log - my party's desert orders, and then he sits down and is drinking with those regulars, whilst my party and I are still waiting for our orders.  Then, on top of this, I have to summon a waitress to rerequest our desert orders (and do this twice as she forgot the 1st time round), when the deserts came for my party they were OK but not brilliant (I've had far better tiramisu in my time), and then, to round the evening off, when the bill came the restaurant had included the 2 non-alcoholic beers that we hadn't had as they had run out, and they also 'sneaked in' the 10% service charge (*we left no other tip as they certainly hadn't merited one).  Overall verdict, approach this place with great caution or spend your money elsewhere

Booked in for an afternoon meal last weekend with my boyfriend, the food and service was amazing! The lamb skewer meat was absolutely cooked perfectly and top quality! Will definitely be returning!

Starter, main and dessert had great flavours, good portions and well presented. The staff were very friendly, relaxed atmosphere and attentive to our table. Good choice of vegetarian options and a couple of vegan options. Lots of variety on the menu. The cocktails were also lovely.

Excellent food, great flavour. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. We wanted a cocktail that was not on the menu but the server made them for us anyway. Great service and good atmosphere.

The food is so tasty! The waiters are all very lovely however service was quite slow. The food itself made up for the slower service! And wow the cocktails were amazing

Our second lunch at Deroka, the first time outside, apart from a little chill, lovely idea to eat outside. Mains were delicious and service too. Only issue out of the cheesecake, would of been my choice and not serving hot drinks outside, obviously you can dine inside too. Definitely recommend this place, lots of choice for a non meat eater like me

Decided to use the take away service as both self and wife are in the vulnerable category . Phoned our order through to restaurant the day before and arranged for it to be delivered which it was at no extra cost . Mehmet who arranged it all gave us a 10% discount and a free bottle of white wine .He phoned to say when it would be delivered and kept in touch to make sure everything was OK .Food was great ,plenty of it , indeed more than we could eat .Price was very reasonable and will no doubt use this restaurant again .I will

We come here quite often as we are locals, but came today hoping for one of their delicious, good value 2 course or 3 course lunches and, after sitting down in an empty restaurant, was handed a newly designed menu, and the set lunches are gone and the main courses are badly overpriced for lunch - £15.90 for a salmon which I used to get as a 2 set lunch for £11.90 (and that was with a starter).We left disappointed within 10 minutes, but were not willing to pay £40+ for lunch and a service charge on top! I know there is a pandemic and businesses are struggling to get or keep business, but don't penalise good quality regular customers....we are all struggling financially.We went elsewhere and noticed on our passing by this restaurant 2 hours later it was totally empty....I doubt they had even had one customer all afternoon. Overpriced and no customers.....let me think about that one..... ;-)

I noticed the restaurant advertise themselves as having a 5 star hygiene rating. In reality, they are only a 1.

My husband and I visited the square this afternoon with our young son. Usually eating anywhere with a toddler is a complete nightmare, however this was the best lunch we've had in a very long time! The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. We had the mixed meze, which arrived very quickly and was delicious! We thought the price of our lunch was very reasonable, especially during these challenging times. All covid policies were followed, including track & trace. We had ample space for the buggy, and nobody had a meltdown (which is rare!). We'll definitely be returning!

We went along to the Al Fresco dining in Hitchin which is a lovely idea, but we were not impressed with the hygiene in light of the Covid 19 rules. Portion size to cost was also very poor. Would not be visiting this restaurant again.

Really nice restaurant and nice food and service. But sadly since lockdown every time we go there the price has risen. It’s gone expensive for the food served now and a service charge has been added. It is optional but you would feel embarrassed to ask not to pay it so really it’s now too expensive there for what it is. It was lovely you used to get two courses for £13. Now just a main is that And more Sorry can’t come here regularly now as feelIt’s too much money now when before it was lovely and reasonable price

Group of friends we went alfresco space in the square and we have been at Deroka atmosphere was great we felt like holiday in Greece food we had sharing starter was brilliant a bit of all Mediterranean meze and we all had few mains for share also I was surprised they cook inside and comes to town square all was very warm and tasty also service was great boys was serving us they were just second away when ever we would order something else We had great time definitely I ll be back

Well,Where do I start.First of all the guy who seemed to be in charge of the seating in the square didn't have a clue what day it was. He called us to move our table of 8 to 630 but forgot he had done so. He whipped together a few tables and we sat down. Took about 4 hours to get a drink, my mate toast who moans a lot already was gasping. We finally made our order with a few of us wondering if the prawn starters would be without shells. The mains arrived and it was laughable. To top the night off my mate asked your waiter of the year for some sauce. Unfortunately there was none under the umbrella or by the tables he was clearing. Tbf he was busy eating the leftovers so he was tied up at the time.Shocking experience, wish I went to chicken George and got the chicken katsu wings which I hear are dynamite

Brilliant atmosphere inside the restaurant. Staff were very helpful when it came to explaining to my elderly grandparents some of the dishes on the menu. Lovely meal, will certainly return soon.

Deroka is literally my favourite spot for eating. I love deroka restaurant’s food especially starters. And the atmosphere and the staff is really nice and the food is really delicious.

COVID measures were in place, I saw a member of staff wiping down menus, hand sanitiser was visible. Excellent food. My husband and I would come back again!

A group of us went into this restaurant on Monday 12th of August 2020 for lunch. We had tried to book a table the day before, but we were told just to show up. We were advised that they were part of the Eat Out to Help out campaign.We walked into the restaurant but were asked to sit outside in the square.We had a tasty meal but the service was very slow. However , when we went to pay we were not offered any discount. The reason given is because we were sitting outside by the centre square. I reminded the owner that we had come into the restaurant and he was the one who sent us out side.Another couple paying after us also queried why they were not getting the discount.I wont be going back and neither will my friends. Good food does not make up for feeling mugged off.

Menus not sanitised between customers using them. No sanitiser in sight for staff or customers. No distance between the tables or the staff and customers. Waiters touched the top of our glasses while serving them. Felt very uncomfortable as there was no one way system and no visible precautions being taken. Staff member seemed very angry when I questioned why the menus weren’t cleaned between different customers using them.

Visited the restaurant for our first meal out after lockdown and left shortly after arriving as we felt very uncomfortable. Could not see any hand sanitizer available, staff were not wearing masks and were crowding around the till together not distancing. Menus were not cleaned between customers, could not see staff washing or sanitising hands, tables not distanced from each other. When our drinks were served the waitress touched the top of the glasses (luckily we brought our own sanitising wipes!) You would not think there was a virus going round! We swiftly cancelled our food order and left for a much nicer restaurant a few doors down who were clearly taking the pandemic seriously!

I was really looking forward to the 'Al Fresco' dinning experience in Hitchin. We were a group of 8. BUT, apart from the waitress who was very polite, the service was terrible. I ordered a beer, which they managed to get wrong over the space of 30 minutes, other drink orders were also wrong. The food we ordered was 80% correct, with dishes missing. We asked for a jug of tap water, and were refused, being told that they didn't serve tap water. When we went into the restaurant to pay the bill at the end of the evening, we were told that they do serve tap water, but the guy running the 'Al Fresco' part had decided he didn't want to serve tap water outside. AND, please don't order a sharing starter. We did, it's billed to be for two people and costs just under £20. When it turned up, it's enough for one person, and we laughed when literally the sharing platter was 'two' of everything, so two pieces of calamari, etc., two! So comical. Who ever serves just two pieces of calamari?!?!? I think the final straw, is when we asked for the bill...and we were given a piece of paper with the amount written on it in pen. No physical receipt. We asked for a receipt and the refused us. The guy running the 'Al Fresco' area said he'd gone through the order and added it up. We did the same and it was £20 cheaper! We paid what we had calculated for. I'm sure the other restaurants doing the 'Al Fresco' evening were hopefully much more accommodating and efficient than Deroka.

I was saddened to see the end of Just 32, which once occupied the pint-sized Sun Street space which has been home to De Roka for some years now, but that doesn't mean I've stayed away.The menu has taken a swerve towards Mediterranean rim but it's always been reliable, with friendly staff and a good buzz as well as attractive lunchtime deals.It has to be on its game these days because there are now two similar Greco-Turkish outlets in the same street and another is apparently on the way in nearby Churchyard.The team have taken to the post-lockdown challenge by joining the band of food traders taking up the chance to set up shop in Market Place and while the weather holds it's a winner.We tucked into a generous mixed meze platter with some whitebait on the side to make a tasty open-air lunch for three.Staff are still feeling their way a bit but are just as friendly and helpful as they ever were indoors, the complaint elsewhere that the kitchen is '100 yards away' is patent nonsense, you don't have to be Usain Bolt to cover that short distance in 10 seconds. The order and pay by app system in place at Ozinsky's, another of those participating, is more convenient than the 'transfer our indoor system outside' workflow adopted by De Roka, but the food was good value and the setting - gusty wind aside - was enjoyable and helped add to the atmosphere in a town centre trying to return to some sort of normality after a grim few months.

Slow service in market square location with unorganised asked 3 times for drinks and starter finally arrived after 1 hours wait. Main course cold as waiters are walking food along streets uncovered due to Covid seating now outside 100yds from restaurant kitchen.

We visit Deroka regularly in 'normal' times and ate at their outside tables in the Market Square this week. The food and service were up to the usual high standards and it was lovely to be sitting outside on a warm evening.

Came here for lunch with my grandad for his first meal out after lockdown the food was delicious, great portions and fantastic service :) would definitely recommend

Our first visit to a restaurant since they reopened, it was lovely. So nice to eat food freshly cooked and served by Memet, the food was delicious, it felt like a real treat! Thanks, we will be back soon. Claire

We went for a 2 course set lunch here today... the first time since probably February...we wanted to support our local independent restaurants...our lunch was fab, safe and as good as usual. The staff and owner are very friendly and happy to be open again. I WOULD RECOMMEND GOING HERE TO SUPPORT SUCH A PASSIONATE LOCAL BUSINESS

A busy night and short staffed! Smallish portions coupled with limited vegetable options! Cramped seating and a two hour deadline left our family regretting our choice. A shame because the food was tasty and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Place is very dark, table space is extremely tight, half of our group sat with their chairs against a radiator that had to be on because of the time of year.There are two sittings, one at 7pm the other at 9, so by a quarter to 9 it’s time to move on.The food wasn’t bad by any means but most of us had some sort of issue i.e. my chicken skewers were dry.

A fair selection on the set menu of both two and three course options, prepared and served well by knowledgeable staff.

Enjoyed a pre-theatre meal with friends. We ate off the set Christmas menu and there was a good choice. The food and drinks were served efficiently and the reasonably sized portions were pretty tasty and enjoyed by all. Would attend again as a pre-theatre venue.

Visited here with friends... the staff were very friendly and attentive! The food was ok, the hot and cold starters were great and I wish we had left it there... we then had a meat platter which was a little dry and could have done with a sauce or something to go with it! But it was reasonably priced and the wine was nice. Not sure I would return though....

What can I say.... Perfect!! From start to finish. The service is top class and the food and drinks are phenomenal! We felt like family by the time we finally left in the evening from our lovely lunch! We’ll be back!

Everything from start to finish was perfect. The food was one of the best I have ever had which was a total shock for me. The service received was of the highest quality by a woman called Kirsty, very friendly and welcoming.I will definitely be making another trip to Deroka very soon.

Four of us went for dinner recently. We had a warm friendly welcome and the updated interior is really nice. We ordered 4 starters, 4 mains and two desserts to share. The starters were lovely, only a bit strange to have the prawns (tasty!)served with mashed potato?! My husband didn’t enjoy his lamb kofte very much which is unusual, unfortunately the lamb knuckle had also sold out (but we were a late sitting and this is usually a very good option so not surprised, still plenty to choose from) but there’s a decent array of other dishes to choose from. The in-laws ordered the lamb cutlets and chicken shish which they both said was lovely. I ordered the swordfish which was delicious as always. Afterwards we shared the tiramisu and cheesecake which were both tasty. Thank you for a lovely evening. We will be back again in the new year

I don’t write many reviews, but felt I needed to on this occasion as one silly remark ruined a potentially great meal.

Starter of hummus with lamb and pine nuts was gorgeous and unusual. Main course was seafood guvech, the most delicious seafood stew I have ever had. The manager was funny and charming and a great host. Definitely going back.

We have had recommendation about this place every one in office and we decided to visit we booked for 4 of us from beginning to end our experience was amazing very warm welcoming we did mention having lunch break only had an hour it wasn't any problem and meal was absolutely wonderful starter i had calamari perfectly cooked main i had lamb casserole it was very tasty and very tender everybody loved and finished without rush i can't wait my next visit

We ve been with 8 of us with children and our visit was absolutely wonderful starters we had all arrived same time which is perfect and also mains we all had different meal and all arrived same time too all was tasty and right size atmosphere was cosy and relaxing and children friendly they helped for choice the children meals and very friendly had lots of complimentary for children which is you can not find other restaurants we could say we can not wait for our next visit thank you

Keenly priced, and everyone enjoyed both the food and wide range of menu options. Great atmosphere. Service was friendly but often slow. They love a balsamic glaze on everything, but food was freshly cooked, hot and tasty. Sadly, we were a bit put off by the creepy over-attention by a middle-aged waiter to our 14-year-old daughter... unprofessional and awkward.

Visited with my husband to celebrate our 3rd wedding anniversary and after reading all the positive reviews on TA we weren’t disappointed. We both opted for fish starters and the mixed grill for main; all the food was freshly cooked and piping hot. The lamb on the mixed grill was divine.

I came here after seeing the good reviews. However it was disappointing. I guess the locals who left reviews haven't travelled much or know good food. I had the salmon. It was dry and tasteless. I'm guessing frozen by the texture and exact cut/size. Also farmed from the fat content. The vegetables were a bit gooey and something didn't taste right. I was disappointed as I wanted to like this place. The waiter who I think is the owner was fantastic though. I don't think he realizes how bad his food is but I really liked him. Service was excellent. Wine was fine and location as well as cleanliness good so to balance I put as average.

Staff are friendly. I had the tiger prawns and steamed salmon, both were good. However, the portions were enormous, biggest I've ever seen in my life. Also, it seems that you have to have 2 or 3 courses where 1 course would have been fine

Went to Deroka on spec - very friendly greeting - food was excellent as was the service - price was very good & great value for money. This place is a real "gem" we'll certainly be going back as it's one of the best spots in Hitchin.

Mid week visit just three family members at o cost of £84.00 for three starters, threes mains and two puddings. Two drinks each, so for value for money does not stack up. Service okay, food was lovely though

Walked in without a booking on a Saturday night hoping for a table. We were met by the manager who checked how he could accommodate us, so we can enjoy a meal there. He managed our expectations by suggesting he can seat us in 30mins.

The restaurant itself is lovely, being in a small, very old, beamed building. There is a wide choice of food but the wine list is maybe a smidge limited if you are really into your wine- still plenty to choose from, though.

First time at this restaurant and was not that impressed. Okay it was a Tuesday and therefore the atmosphere was not much. Food okay but nothing special.

Had a Starter here had to move seats due to being surrounded by flies I.e appeared to be flies they said they were from the duck pond but bit far & looked like fruit flies!! Found the food ok but had to cancel main because the flies were landing in food & drink,waitress was good but the owner or other member of staff grumbled when we said we are not staying saying 'it's already cooking main....We should of said 10 minutes ago'? So we paid & sadly won't going back.

It gets better second time around. Set meals are very good value, with well prepared, and presented food, and served by friendly staff.

Went for lunch on Good Friday. Just wandered in off the street without really looking at the menu but there was a wide variety of choice. We did the two course lunch deal and paid a bit extra for the meze sharing platter for our starter which i would definitely recommend as everything tasted great. Had chicken/lamb kofte skewers and rice for main which were simple dishes but were full of flavour and tasted really good.Definitely better than was expecting. Venue itself is intimate and cozy. Will definitely be back.

My partner, our son and I have just experienced our first Deroka visit! We had the lunch menu and all we can say is FANTASTIC! Such a friendly owner who made us all feel so very welcome. The food was absolutely faultless and such beautiful flavours. Would highly recommend and cannot wait to return again!

My favourite restaurant in Hitchin the service is great and food always very tasty and well presented. We keep going back and will continue to do so. Well done Deroka.

I visited Deroka a few years ago and remembered the food was great, and when the opportunity presented itself to go again I approach with a hope that it would live up to the memory.

Had a lovely meal here with friends. It’s not ‘fine dining’ but good freshly prepared food with lovely friendly service.

We hadn’t been for over a year since our little girl was born and couldn’t wait to go back as we’ve always enjoyed the food. I’m pleased to say they didn’t disappoint.

We really enjoyed our lovely tasty food, kids liked their pasta and my cubes of lamb were divine! Look forward to returning in the evening. Felt I was in Greece.
