Dead Donkey Bar in Sheffield

My favourite bar, bar none. Had a grilled cheese sandwich earlier that was so delicious I haven't stopped thinking about it. Beautiful interior and excellent service as well.

The knowledge of the combined bar tenders is envied across abbeydale road with drinks tailored to match your specific taste buds. One bar tender in particular, the handsome one with curly locks, will create you off menu cocktails based on your specific requirements although this is not advertised and not widely available, you've got to butter him up a little first. Go to the Dead Donkey and treat yourself to an extravagant but tasteful evening.

The place didn't smell great when we walked in but gave it a chance as there were a couple of dogs there so thought maybe it was them but then went to the ladies loo and the walls and door of the cubicle are covered in thick mould and very dirty, the toilet itself appeared clean but the mould on the walls is unacceptable especially for somebody who has asthma like myself. Needs a good clean

Updated review: this local bar is great and the people are awesome, they make great drinks and perhaps the finest cocktails in Sheffield. Good range of Ciders and Beers. They also sell retro snacks like maized based king of crisps: Monster Munch and family favourite Twiglets. Clean toilets, I have observed. Fully deserving of 5 star accolades and any other prestigious national and / or international awards.

I love the Dead Donkey so much. It is the perfect neighbourhood bar. Low key, top notch and ever-changing selection of beer (and wine), exceptionally friendly staff and (very importantly) excellent snacks. Whether I’m by myself for a late afternoon beer and read of my book, or meeting friends for a more social kind of night - it is just great.

We rarely go to that end of Abbeydale rd but my friend kept telling abou their incredible unique cocktails,so we decided to pop in. Tried their "Melonius Funk" cocktail and my bf had a super yummy zesty IPA. That cocktail was AMAAAAZING!!!! It took me back to our travelling around Asia days. Will be defo going back!!!! The staff are super lovely and friendly, and the atsmophere is mega cosy,highly recommend! :)

Friendly local bar with great toasties and a laid-back atmosphere. Good selection of beers and whiskies, and a regularly-updated cocktail menu.

A lively, friendly pub with a good atmosphere. When I grew up IPAs were transparent and tasted of beer, as opposed to today's craft beers which have a tendency to strange flavours and a look of coloured Guinness. I was pleasantly surprised to drink several of the nicest craft beers I have come across here, though don't expect it to be cheap!

Popped in for a quick drink after being in the restaurant next door. Friendly service which was quick too. Found a nice Chesterfield to sit on whilst enjoying our drinks. Would go back.

Best bar in Sheffield by a mile. Great selection of beer, brilliantly selected wines and fantastic bespoke cocktails. The grilled cheese sandwiches are delicious with some really interesting ingredients.

Just lovely service from bar staff who care about beer and want to share their knowledge. I went in expecting limited no-alcohol options and instead was offered a great selection with helpful info and found my favourite so far. Such a joy when most bars treat no-alcohol drinkers as irrelevant. Plus, a beautiful venue, chilled ambience of lighting and decor. My new favourite bar.

The bar staff making the cocktails here are seriously talented people! The menu is really exciting and they really go bold with flavours and ingredients. And the glassware is beautiful! Also a lot of great craft beer on draft and in cans. A lovely cosy atmosphere with friendly staff, I can’t wait to go again! 🍹 Ps dogs allowed so even better 🐶

You cant help but love this super-friendly, informal bar. Small and delightfully independent, it's warm and inviting inside and the barkeeps know how to mix a really good cocktail. There's a rather good range of ales and lagers on the bar which change regularly, a thoughtfully stocked fridge and some quality, well-chosen wines from Sheffield's Starmore Boss. The unusual little menu of toasted cheese sandwiches is interesting and delicious, plus a cute little tuckshop of bar snacks is available. Clientele are a mixture of local regulars and at weekends, groups of friends doing the Abbeydale Rd 'crawl'. Background music is eclectic, varied and not obtrusive and the low lighting and quirky fittings make for a unique, intimate experience in the evening. Best of all, they look after you like you're a VIP!

Called in the Dead Donkey as I fancied a change from some of my usual haunts and, needless to say, was not disappointed. There is a good selection of beers, either on tap or in bottles or cans, and much else, so it should not be too difficult to find something to your taste.

Friday early bar and my first visit. I don't want to go home. Think that's an honest assessment of a warm and welcoming place as Autumn literally breezes in. I dare say I shall return. *UPDATE* We have been back a number of times since. A great place for our Abbeydale Road pub crawl!! The Löwenbräu is wonderful.

One of the best pub in the city and over. Delicious sandwiches! Every time different menu always with fresh product! Fabolous selection of beer with a great turn over every week, fantastic cocktails preparation and extremely friendly staff. One of the best environment ever talking about lights and forntures! Huge selection of board games. The dead donkey deserve more than one visit! You'll remain amused!

My parents enjoyed their toasties (can't remember which) and beer and I had a lovely vegan toastie (the roasted pepper and spinach one) with a very nice almond latte. Felt nice and safe in there with hand sanitizer available. Only recommendation would be to make sure to have more plant milk available for vegans/dairy allergies as there was only enough left for one, which was fine for me but would be an issue if I was with my partner whose also vegan. Very very nice regardless and reasonably priced!

Called in at lunchtime,midweek, and although it was a little quiet,the bar is warm and comfortable and the staff very friendly. Large settees and comfortable chairs and a good selection of keg beers,craft cans and bottles.

What a shame. Nice looking place with small booths, hatstand for coats; nice cosy touches. Guy behind the bar was nice, pretty helpful talking through the craft beer cans. The clientele? Here's where it goes south... A group of young lads were sat at the bar, taking it over effectively (mates with member of staff covering kitchen). On & off they were really loud, one especially. Clearly not used to day drinking. There wasn't music on for most of the time yet they're were talking at a volume as to scream over the top of it. There were some older couples in who were eating & also put off by it I'd guess. You couldn't hear them so it's difficult to tell! Ended up sat in one of the neat booths & lucked out once again with the guy in the next booth relaying his social life at top volume. I mean he was twice as loud as the person sat across from me. So, would be an okay place without these people with their zero levels of self-awareness. Weak bar staff too for not reining the lads in a bit. Like I said, a shame really.

Brillaint new local independent place, the staff are lovely, there's a fantastic selection of proper beers, spirits and cocktails - really reasonably priced. It's dog friendly. I've not tried the food yet but looking forward to it as it sounds tasty and I've only hear good things from friends. Hope this place becomes an Abbeydale Road institution. 5 pints of delicious golden ale from me 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺

Craft beer only and not cheap but a great place, food very good and you must try the variety of chilli sauces from Mr Khoo different grade.Highly recommended.

A great place making our restaurant section of Abbey dale

I LOVE this place! After going a few times and eating it's amazing grilled cheese sandwich with incredible sauces on the side (😍🤤) and enjoying a wide variety of good beers and cocktails (the old whiskey one and the honey one are both divine) I can say I'm a massive fan.

Some nice beers but low on seats. I'm an old man and I like a seat. I went in a few pubs today day looking for decent ipas and they sold me the best of the day.

They sell Addlestones cider on draft, amazing!! I think they also sell beer but can't be sure 😂

Really tasty and unique cocktails. My friend enjoyed his beer suggestion from the friendly bar man. Reasonable prices for such quality! We will definitely be returning to try yummy sounding grilled cheese.

Dead Donkey is a great place with amazing food and tasty beer. It's much more enjoyable than the Broadfield. Feeling more intimate and friendly.
