Stayed here for one night, room was quite nice and nice that they give you tea making things and biscuits. The bed was comfy, but the divan wasn't secured so you couldn't sit up in bed without rolling the whole bed forwards which became a bit of a nuisance. The bathroom was fine but was tired with peeling paint under the towel rail, mould on the shower and a missing skirting board which made it look messy. We had dinner, my friend had the vegan wellington which they said was very nice. I had a small roast dinner with "all the trimmings", which was very disappointing and very watery and tasteless - the turkey was lukewarm and tasteless, the gravy was watery, the potatoes were overcooked and tough, and the boiled veg was just standard almost like from a packet. Also (up for debate) I would consider a Yorkshire pudding as a trimming, so was very disappointed when they don't actually come with one and you have to pay extra. The only saving grace was the lovely service from the staff who definitely made you feel very welcome. But definitely some work needed elsewhere. I wouldn't readily stay again.

Our second stay. Perfect! Room, food, service were perfect. This was our second time and we enjoyed the first time so much we decided to stay again on our trip to the lakes. Thank you for a wonderful time. Great location if you are going to the Westmoreland Show.

Booked a table in advance online for 1.45 PM on their website. Arrived on time and was met by a mature unhelpful waitress who didn't even ask our name, just said 'your the quarter to two and we close at 2PM, so I will be back in two minutes for you to order!' We were rushed to order, then staggered delivery of the four meals to table. The service at lunchtime has not got any better, it over shadows the food, what a waste of excellent food when service is so poor.

Old inn with visible damp walls Called in after visiting the fringe festival in Edinburgh. I can see where the village got it's name , it must have been named after the pub. Drink prices were more than the prices on the royal mile. Didn't stay long, won't visit again.rip off

Lovely staff, who do a great job. Unfortunately not as dog friendly as it claims to be. It really only provides ground floor rooms without carpets (which is more cleaning staff friendly than dog friendly). There’s no garden really, hard to find bins to dispose of the bags and most of the outside seating is on gravel and by a main road. Dogs aren’t allowed in all the eating areas which is fair enough but the alternative bar area wasn’t great to eat in. I would call it ‘dog tolerant’. The bedroom I had was quite small and I had to move some stuff around to get the dog in. There were weirdly no plugs by the bed and as with many hotels the bizarre red flashing light on the smoke alarm pointed straight at the head of the bed (why do hotels do that?!). The canal path opposite is good for a walk but be careful crossing the road and the path will be muddy when wet.

We booked this hotel for an overnight stay on our way to Scotland, and I am glad we did. Friendly welcoming at reception. Rooms were of a good size and comfy. Had a decent night's sleep in a great bed. The food was good, especially the sandwiches at lunchtime, though slightly disappointed a hotel stops serving hot food during the day, the sandwiches made up for it. We had evening meals, and i had sea bass, and my mum had chicken strips, both delicious. The duo roast was disappointing as the meat was just rolled meat and not a proper roast. The veg was ok but wouldn't expect mangetout and baby sweetcorn with a roast dinner. The carrots were good, though, with the new potatoes. The staff were really nice and were exceptionally patient with us. There was a grumpy barman who seemed to mellow as the day went on 😃. Breakfast was lovely. Would recommend and would stay again.

Popped across from the nearby campsite for a very yummy dinner and couple of pints. Great choice of local beers Had the game pie (special) and the roast dinner both excellent and very generous portions. No need for a starter with portions that size! Dog friendly in the bar and seating outside for when the sun is out. No rating on room as can't comment as we didn't stay

We visited and tried to make a booking in person 2 days before we wanted to go and were very firmly informed by quite rude staff member that it was fully booked. 10 mins later while standing outside we were able to make an online booking!!!! Wish we hadn't bothered. It is mediocre pub food and too expensive. The black pudding was waxy in texture (you cannot beat Stornaway black pudding) and the beef stroganoff was drowning in a moat of bland sauce. We didn't even bother looking at puddings. There are not a lot of places to eat in the area and Crooklands is making the most of this with an uninspiring menu of not very good food. I wouldn't return and can't recommend.

Stayed at the Crooklands Hotel with my wife and our large dog for 3 nights in February 24. We were on a ground floor deluxe double room. The room was amazing with en suite bathroom, good size smart TV and a bed that was wider than it was long. When we went for breakfast we were allowed to take our dog with us but had to sit in the bar not the restaurant. This we found excellent for the service was the same and they had lit the log fire for us and non dog lovers staying at the hotel could have their breakfast in peace in the restaurant. You had the usual choice of cereals, toast, cooked breakfast etc which was excellent and served with a smile. The location we found was good, its was on the edge of the South Lakes which was easily accessed by car but also not far away was the coastal area of Arnside. Another bonus was in the other direction you had the Yorkshire Dales and not to far the Forest of Borland. We have stayed in many hotels with our dog and the thing that stood out to both my wife and I the most, was that the staff they where not just professionally friendly, they where all genuinely friendly.

This is our local spot for food. Never had a bad meal. Service can be slightly slow at time but the food always makes up for it. Staff never mind our little one making noise and running around. Highly recommend!

Booked a table for lunch for two couples. We were quickly seated and drinks ordered in a very short time also the waitress brought a bottle of water. Menus were produced and orders taken with the minimum of waiting time. All four of us had differant main courses which were all excellent. We all had four different sweets and all were thoroughly enjoyed. I didn't take any photos which I now regret. All in all I was blown away by the quality of the food and the service. The bill came to £99.00 with the ability to incude a tip when paying by card. The staff were excellant, I could not fault them All together a great dining experience, absolutely it's certainly change since my wife and I had our wedding reception here 53 years ago.

An absolutely beautiful meal in a wonderful setting. The staff were very attentive, despite a mix up with the drinks order and being misheard whilst ordering. The food was superb. Two of our party had the roast beef and said not only was it one of the best they've had, the portions were astronomical. Would 100% recommend for dining.

Went for our anniversary lunch on 31 October, all booked through their website, arrived a little early to be advised that there was not a booking, however the young member of staff was helpful and said that they could find us a table. Although, a mature waitress snipped at him saying 'that they click on the wrong dates,' then she appeared at the table and we were accused of not filling in our names on the booking by said waitress, as they found a booking at our time without a name. Food was excellent as ever, flavours, choice, quality and quantity were great and wine delightful. We ordered desserts with the same waitress mentioned above, who forgot to add them to the bill and when my husband advised he would be happy to pay the bill but it was incorrect, this said waitress 'sniped' once more to her colleague that 'it is correct!' We paid the full correct amount, but received no apology. This will not stop us eating again as we are locals, however we will telephone and book in future, but this unwelcoming behaviour may stop others returning! Such a shame as this is an excellent establishment.

On trip to this part of Cumbria last week, I had researched and found the hotel as a place for a light meal late afternoon - seemed ideal! However, after a nightmare journey up from Norfolk, we arrived at the hotel at about 17.30pm to be told that they could not serve us even in the bar for a light meal. Very disappointing as we had walked to the hotel from our accommodation and it was wet. I really thought so early in the evening they could have squeezed us in, but NO!

Stopped in here for a glass of wine and a beer and to have some food. Was told had a couple of big parties to ask again in half hour which we did and were told no. Fair enough however another couple who came in after us were told to ask at 8pm (same time as us) and are being served food. Really disappointed it wasn’t that busy. Will not be back. Way too much hassle.

We called in to ask for a table and got told they were fully booked, went straight on open table and booked a table immediately... being lied to wasnt a good start but it was convenient and had been recommended to us so we decided to go anyway. Wish we'd gone elsewhere! Fries were still slightly frozen in the middle, burger was somehow not cooked through and yet still dry and sawdusty in texture. Husbands soup was very strange, advertised as carrot and orange and extremely heavy on the orange. When I mentioned about the chips they said they would have fixed it, but didn't take any money off the bill for the mistake. Overall very disappointed and wouldn't go back

Just before Christmas, while enjoying a family lunch with excellent food, in a cosy festive ambiance served by friendly staff, out of the blue my husband suffered a stroke. I cannot thank management and staff enough for their prompt action and the support they gave us while we waited for the ambulance. My husband has now made a full recovery and we will be returning soon to celebrate his good health.

Unfortunately Chester’s not what it was. Toilets are poor as can be evidenced by the negative comments by those queuing up to use them. Having said that and although we have seen a decline in the level of service ie paper bags and no table service et al the food especially bakery products remain outstanding. It would appear that things are now geared to help the running of the establishment rather than to ensure good customer service. We have been visiting Chester for years and the decline is very noticeable but we will give it another chance because apart from anything else the actual location is outstanding.

We had booked 5 rooms through Booking.com well in advance and when we arrived at 4pm we were told that our booking had been cancelled (Booking.com had taken our money the previous day). This eventually got sorted by Booking .com and we found good alternative accommodation for the night but the way we were treated by staff at the Derby Arms was awful.
