Cromars Fish & Chips in Fife

We stopped in for lunch right at opening on a Monday and ordered a variety of traditional Fish and Chips, fried English Sausage, and fish cakes. Everything was excellent and the prices were reasonable. The Sausage was quite rich, so happy we shared. Tiny place so be prepared to wait for a table or take carry out and sit along the Market Steet or walk down to the water.

Took ages. Ridiculously overpriced. Poor portion size. Food below average.

Went here and bought 3 fish supper take outs and a portion of chips £46 later, and it arrived. Usually, I don't give 1* reviews, but this, unfortunately, is one of those times. Everyone's chips were under cooked, can't see how this happens. Also, the fish was dry and tastless. It's the first time I've not finished a fish supper due to it being pretty horrible. As other comments say, it's a shame as this fish and chip shop used to be good. Say to say I won't be returning.

I love the vibe and decoration of this shop. The window allows you to peek through the market street. The chip is a nice afternoon snack.

First time visit in September. The batter on the fish was just perfect; thin, crispy, melt in your mouth. Great chips too. Visited on a sunny day so we sat outside on the little patio. Friendly staff, too. Would go again if we return to St Andrews.

Amazing experience! The service was outstanding; the staff at the front were lovely, great vibes and made us aware of the beer deal. The decor is trendy and the restaurant was all clean. The food itself is lush. Fresh, didn't taste oily, the tartar was delicious and a nice beer choice. It's a wee bit expensive but totally worth it and I'd go again without a second thought.

Bang Average fish supper. Massively overpriced. Single piece of fish for £14.50 is Rediculous! Had to cut tail off as was full of bones. The majority of chips were small and crusty.

Though a bit of a wait - it is a very popular venue after all - good food and very polite staff.

Over priced litter bin for customer use was over flowing, fish was served without tartar sauce which I would have thought would be free for the price paid, no sign of salt and vinegar

Really good fish and chips. The haddock was fresh and crispy, the chips was good. Calamari was crispy though some part was not fully coated. Overall food was great though a bit too oily for me but that wasn't a problem. Service was really good, the girl at the till was super friendly and brought our orders to our table. Super recommended 👌

This plaice is absolutely terrible, stay clear. Far too expensive I needed to get a wonga loan. The chips were reheated and inedible. My partner got a smoked sausage supper and I got a disgusting soggy battered pizza supper. The actual pizza was steamed within the 5 inches of tasteless batter that resembles Freddy Kruegers face as it peeled off the non existent cheese or tomato sauce. I fed it to the seagull and they threw it back. Stay well clear. The staff who looked like came off the set of balamory couldn't even get the meals correct, we were the only 2 people waiting with our wee tickets. They forgot my pickled onions and my partner got corrected for saying tomato sauce. "It's ketchup" by a little guy who was struggling to even comprehend everything with tomato sauce. Very embarrassing to be called a chip shop. On the positive note the smoked sausage, irn bru and tomato sauce was good.

Simply classic, simply wonderful, simply delicious

Food is nice but doesn't rate any more stars as the portion sizes are very poor compared to other chippies locally. The main aim seems to be to give you a single layer of chips in the tray and then put the fish, sausage or whatever on the top to hide that. Prices are also high for what you get. When it's busy it can take an age to get served but in fairness this does appear to be because everything is cooked to order.

£6.80 for a large portion of dry, almost unedible chips. I'm a resident of St Andrews so don't often need to buy takeaway food. Thoroughly embarrassed that visitors to our wonderful town are treated this way. Even the young lady who served me was embarrassed. Shame on you whoever owns this establishment.

This is a take away chip shop with somewhere to sit. The fish suppers were ok but you’re eating with wooden forks off a cardboard box and drinking tea out a cardboard beaker. I really don’t understand why all these chip shops are getting awards (Anstruther Fish Bar and this one), did the judges just get a pudding supper to take away? Back in north east England now and will go to Colmans in Ocean Road, South Shields next week to remind myself what a good fish and chip shop should be like.

Popped in for a couple of takeaway fish suppers. Place was reasonably busy and my order taken quickly. Fish was freshly cooked while waiting, it was worth the wait, very nice fish supper although a bit pricey

having worked in a Seafood Award shortlisted chippy for 8 years I am extremely fussy ... we had fresh haddock and scampi suppers.... OMG I have never tasted such amazing melt in the mouth flaky fish in a light and very tasty batter.. the chips were perfectly golden and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside... the tartare sauce was exceptionally tasty We loved our meal and absolutely recommend this fantastic chippy

Food was nice but compared to other chip shops the portion size was small. Notably, they do not provide any paper/newspaper to wrap the food in for takeaway customers which is very odd.

I ordered calamari but I got two onion rings in it. Slightly disappointed.

Ok, where do we start !!! Ordered through deliveroo for our family holiday at St Andrews holiday park. Well, the deliver drive could not find us with the caravan location and number from our order. With numerous phone calls from the so called delivery driver we ended up back at reception having to collect our OWN order having paid for this service ! After collecting or DELIVERY we took this back to our caravan to fined the following missing from our order - Fish supper for one of my family members missing along with the separate curry sauce for my son. Seriously poor quality control from a business selling fish and chips and they cannot even check my order going out the door costing me £65.00 Can’t say much above deliveroo either as it seems to be pass the buck and we need to now attempt to get a credit for the food we paid for and never received. Shocking service from both party’s involved.

we traveled 356 miles from Coventry all the way to St Andrews & we weren’t disappointed soon as we walked in i just knew this place was special then we reached the till & Shannon was one of the most lovest host we ever meet & we knew we were in for a treat,, the fish & chips turned up & im telling you now absolutely world class thank you so much ☺️ if your ever in St Andrews cromars is a must 🩵

Extortionate and disgusting. How can a chip shop not get chips right? The ones that weren't overcooked enough to have any potato left in them, were dry and foul. Go ANYWHERE but here for food in St Andrews! I visited again hoping the first time was just a bad day. Apparently not, it's a disgusting rip off of a place!!

Was charged £6.80 for a large chips (pic below). Just looks like a standard portion of chips, total rip off.. won’t be back :(

Dog friendly! The only chippy I’ve ever known that allows dogs to sit in, fabulous! Also, the best fish and chips in St.Andrews, was always loyal to TailEnd but no more. Chips are incredible with the crispiest fish batter I’ve ever seen. Highly recommended 5⭐️

Food and service are wonderful. Wendy brings a little extra, throwing kisses out to all, spreading the joy we all need.

It's £16 for haddock n chips , too expensive in my view but apart from that it's faultless . Clean oil makes for an excellent piece of fish almost tempura batter and clean chips . They even leave salt n vinegar out to top up if one requires.

Went here today and service was good, lovely girl behind the counter and very patient and helpful. Food was freshly cooked and tasted good. Would come back again. It was also clean and kept clean with regular wiping of the tables and sweeping the floor.

What a disappointment. Used to be a great but yesterday the chips and peas were barely warm and the fish overcooked, dry and tasteless. Eating in facilities very spartan, just a few bar stools in a back room en route to the toilet, so we could not even eat together. Wooden cutlery and all served in boxes. The business seems to be cashing in on its reputation.

The ordering system is baffling - like another reviewer said, customers herded in like sheep in a pen. We waited twenty minutes for a single fish and a portion of chips. £13. The fish was all batter and what fish there was, was bone dry. I’m only giving two stars because my partner said he enjoyed the chips.

This was a fantastic chippy! SOOO good and the best chips I had in all of my Scottish f&c adventures. Indulge yourself. It's worth it.

Excellent fish and chips. The service is just a person behind a counter that takes your orders. You may get a seat at the few sit in options. Otberwise you will have to wait in a queue. The atmosphere is unique but I would not call it cosy or inviting. It can be quite busy because the place is very popular for take away. The food is exceptional though.

Only popped in for chips for both of us 30 minute wait but I thought it will be worth it no absolutely disgusting worst chips I have ever tasted in my life they were fed to the seagulls down by the harbour what a disappointment. Both lots of chips were cold dried out tasteless I'm sorry to be writing this bad review but it's true.

Great cider, loves the beef with mash (the puff pastry was perfect with it). My husband had the grilled cheese and loved it.

We took take away and it was quite good, fresh - it is important, mashed peas souse can be improved by adding more spices. Staff was nice, I like when people are smiling 😊

It was a nice experience but I wasn't expecting something less expeditious. It was good and the service was very good but there are crazy people so obviously you have to be quick.. If I had to relive the experience, I would have taken the meal to take away.

We had a great lunch, hosted by wonderful, polite, and friendly staff. It was a really nice touch having the 80th Anniversary of D Day and Poppies decorating our table for the Caddie School for Soldiers veterans of the UK, USA and Canadian military.

I managed to get some fish with my batter. Long wait too. Unimpressive.

£6.80 for a "large" chips (most of which were like bullets) and the lad didn't even fill the tray half way up. £1.80 for can of irn bru is also beyond a joke. Below average, expensive and portion sizes are pathetic. Don't go if you're hungry. Staff are pleasant enough though.

Excellent fish, haddock I believe, served with tarter sauce and malt vinegar. Someone else in my party said the prawns were good as well. Don't bother with the cheese sticks.

We placed a large order - food for 6 adults. Shop was extremely busy as it was Easter Sunday - staff were very efficient and helpful! Our order was ready quickly. Food was all amazing. We will definitely be back!

Was so looking forward to this but was actually the worst we have had in a long time ..the lady serving was lovely but that was about the hight of it. Sausages were unedible chips look warm and a tiny scoop of chips for the price. We definitely will not be returning.

HOW NOT TO RUN A FISH AND CHIP SHOP This place used to be good. The reviews have been terrible in recent years, but we decided to give them a second chance. I wish we hadn't. When you get an order badly wrong, it's better not to make sarcastic jokes with your staff and be defensive and patronising to your customers. And, as my wife commented, "I can honestly say that is the worst batter I have had in my life".

I had a great time visiting Cromars. I had the haddock and chips. The fish was cooked perfectly and the batter was light and crispy. The chips were also really good, and I’m not usually a chippy chip person so that’s saying something. Watch out for the extra charge on the tartare sauce though, over £1 which I thought quite a lot.

I visit from New York City often and Cromars is my spot for lunch every day. Shannon makes me feel right at home and serves up the best White Pudding Supers in St. Andrews. No matter how busy she is, she always has a smile and a friendly greeting and that's why Cromars is my favorite place for lunch.

Excellent fish and chips in St Andrews, and very friendly staff. Dogs are welcome, and there are even menu items for your furry friend.

EDIT: 2024 Feb Cromars isn't as good anymore and we don't bother going now, especially given how expensive it is. The batter to fish ratio is crazy. You get much more batter than you do fish, and because the fish is filleted so thin, the texture is unsatisfying. They extol their 'angel-cut filet' but it's really a cost-saving exercise to rip-off customers. I want a nice hunk of tender and moist fish, not a paper thin piece of haddock coated in a mountain of batter. Even worse, the haddock comes out dry. The other place in town has better fish and better prices. The chips aren't as good but the fish exceeds Cromars. Old Review 2022: We've tried the rival chippy a few minutes away and it wasn't as good as Cromars. The chips and calamari are wonderful, crispy and not too greasy. The fish is crispy but we prefer the filet to be thicker. The place is also dog-friendly which is a huge plus. Seating is sparse inside so be prepared to takeaway. Only things I dislike are that every time I go to order, I’m asked if I want X or Y sauce… of course I don’t if I didn’t say it in the first place. Please stop forcing your poor staff to upsell to every customer. We as customers do not like it or fall for it. Also a shame that students and locals discount has been withdrawn.

Very disappointed. For star very expensive! This was the worst fish and chips I have ever had. The chips were lukewarm so does fish and fish was covered with loads of dry butter - looking and tasting like was fried second time. Tatar sauce was a bit weird too to thick and too creamy. I would expect fresh and hot food from place that is situated by the sea site… I will not recommend the place and I will not be visiting again!

Absolute joke of a chip shop. I honestly had to wait half an hour for fish and chips because 1. Waiting time information given by colleague behind counter 2. They accepted an external order they couldn't possibly complete with regular customers already in. 3. No apologies or communication given to the 12 waiting customers. Will take my business else where.

Absolutely love fish and chips from Cromars. Freshly cooked, piping hot. The batter is crunchy and the fish was big enough for 2 of us to share. We had mushy peas too and they were delicious.

This is probably the best fish and chips I've tasted for years. Drove from Glasgow for this 😁 friendly and efficient staff. Highly recommended it.

Saturday 14th January was just huge disappointment. Order four fish&chips meals. Two of them were almost uneatable as the fish was overdone and so thin that it felt like you eating just the batter. Two had luckily a bit of fish in it. BUT I'm very doubtful that our fish were made from fresh fish. Was not soft as always and the taste/smell was completely different from our last visit. Also the batter seemed so differently done. Maybe new chef, don't know, but it's not light and thin as it used to be. All chips gave us feeling that they've been done, waiting for customer and then after order they went back to frying oil again. So they were as "crispy"(solid) that you couldn't even chew them. Been visiting St.andrews at least 3-4 times a year as it's lovely town. Never eaten anywhere else but next time I'll be definitely thinking to eat somewhere else as I really don't want that bad experience again. Not worth the price.

I thought it was excellent, the fish was fresh and very good but the Latin palate may find it a little tasteless, but the batter is unbeatable. The potatoes are super fresh.

Decided to give Cromars a try, always went to their opposition. I am a little disappointed. Chips over cooked , fish just okay. The rest of the stars speak for them selves
