Arrived for our Sunday night booking at the Courtyard restaurant at 6pm, only to be barely acknowledged and left sitting waiting for 25 minutes. We had to ask if the restaurant was open as we were not seen to. The waiter was rude and couldn’t care less, took ages getting our drinks and as previously said, did not ask if we had a table booked or if we needed help. Very poor customer service. Left nearly straight away as soon as we had our drinks. They have certainly lost our business tonight and for the foreseeable future.

We booked to attend a murder mystery evening here. Having been to a murder mystery before we were excited of the expectation of attending another one. Upon arrival we were sent to the bar. We overheard a couple next to us ordering drinks - a pint of pironi and a single vodka and coke, they asked them for £16.80. We thought they were overcharged (Coke was from the bottle and flat, vodka was standard), Next came our drinks, which for 2 doubles and a singles cost nearly £30. We then asked for the drinks menu to compare. However on the menu the drinks were CONSIDERABLY cheaper than what we were charged. The bar girl, after watching us review the menu came over and explained this was there "old" menu and they are awaiting a new menu. Quite rightly we asked why we were given this then. The food was cooked from frozen for sure and very bland, the main course un-edible.The WHOLE bar was closed whilst they served food (a public bar.)To top it off the ladies toilets were out of order and you had to walk to the other side of teh hotel (outside) when raining to go to the toilet in a very very dated facility. Would not recommend this to anyone and will not be going back.

I attended here with my husband for afternoon tea. The building decor is dated. The restaurant where we sat was dirty with crumbs on the floor from the previous guests. Staff brought the afternoon tea to our table. It was bland and looked like it had been made up from leftovers. The sandwiches were ice cold and basic. The cream tea at the top was obviously basic shop bought products.Very very disappointed.

We ate here when we stayed at the adjoining hotel. The meal was fantastic, but the staff need a bit more training, as at no point during the meal did anyone ask us if everything was ok!

Was given this has a gift , thank god we hadn’t paid for it , for £14.95 per person it was the worst afternoon tea I have ever had!Poor finger sandwiches which were all dried up,cheese was the worst , no choice of scones just given scones with currants in , pot of clotted cream and jam that was in the packaging not presented in jars , poor cakes that looked like they had been defrosted out of an Iceland cake selection. Only good thing was the pot of tea.Room was very old and dated ,this place needs a refurb !Wouldn’t return !

Visited for the first time for an afternoon tea following a voucher we received from our friends for a late anniversary present. So disappointed on what had been served for the value of £39. Thank god we didnt pay otherwise I would of been asking for a refund!! Presentation was rubbish. The Sandwiches were served with no garnish and just looked like they had been standing for a long period of time. They were dry and tasted cheap. I’ve paid for cheaper elsewhere and received better quality!! And for the scones, some presentation would of been nice as opposed to serving the cream and jam like they do in a cafe. Could of been put in serving dish/spoon. The cakes looked and tasted like they had been defrosted from Iceland’s selection pack!! Very very poor service and no one around to complain too. The room was dated, tired and could do with a refurbish. Really would not come here again.

Attended for afternoon tea with family members as part of a gift experience voucher. Poor signage for reception on arrival, incredibly dated and shabby presentation of all guest areas and terrible service in the restaurant from a waiter who makes Manuel (Fawlty Towers) look competent. Waiter had bad attitude and tables were inadequately laid. We had to ask for more milk, tea and coffee and for napkins as there were none. Napkins brought on a plate in a big pile and eye rolling seen by the waiter! Coffee tasted awful and stewed. Sandwiches were fresh and tasty but obviously shop bought cakes. Staff were absent in the restaurant for the majority of our visit and we had to go and find them to ask for extra milk etc. In addition no Prosecco available on asking, due to “a wedding yesterday”. All in all definitely an experience- but not a positive one.

We had a voucher for this restaurant which was handy or we would have followed the other diners in the restaurant and walked out! The menu was very simple, starters: various salads drenched in Balsamic. Mains: grilled steak, well almost grilled and chips(oven chips). It was so bad it was funny! I have in the past paid for a Faulty Towers dining experience, this was so much better and real!!!! Seriously, you cannot run a restaurant like that and I haven't mentioned the pudding yet. Maybe I won't mention it, I will just say we were asked by the waitress to order desert swiftly before the chef went home, for goodness sake, it was only 9pm on a Saturday night. I have given 1 star because the 'entertainment' was a really good night out. However came home hungry.

Lovely setting, that's the good bit done. Food was so so extraordinary poor just missed semolina from the menu to complete the school dinner experience. However had it been on the menu they would have ran out! You would not believe a hotel could run out of coffee or even come to think if it pasta. Service was amazingly poor, staff must gave been trained by Basil Faulty training college but lacked any of the wit! When ordering a drink at dinner table in the restaurant the waitress will serve you once at the table and then you get the pleasure of being told "go to the bar for drinks"! Decor was marginally better than the food and service. The gents loos may have not have been cleaned since 1980 but the 5 blue things in the urinal used to unsuccessfully make the pungent odor made a pretty shape. In summary turn around and stay at home otherwise you will feel unbelievably unwelcome.

Nothing at all deluxe about our afternoon tea, not like the pictures shown. 5 finger sandwiches, 2 scones with jam and clotted cream, 2 small profiteroles, 2 pieces of Victoria sponge and 2 even smaller pieces of coffee & walnut cake. Table cloths also looked like they could do with a good iron. Quite disappointed. We had been given a gift experience of deluxe afternoon tea, don't think our understanding of deluxe is the same as the hotel!

If you are looking for contemporary, sleek and modern, or gastro pub style, then this is not for you. This place is a little dated, has artexed walls and rickety old stairs, but it should make no apology for that, it is what it is, a lovely, quaint, old fashioned country manor, in a beautiful setting. We had 3 course Sunday lunch. Starters of pate', prawn cocktail or soup. Mains beef, pork, salmon or vegetarian option. Dessert Eton mess, deep filled apple pie or profiteroles. Starters were very good. Main consisted of 2 slices of meat, carrots, green beans, 3 large roast potatoes and gravy, just enough when taking 3 courses, but would benefit from 3rd slice of meat. Desserts were excellent, particularly the Eton mess.Service was very good, swift and polite, with no hurrying to get you out of the door after the meal. All in all, a very pleasant lunch and at £8.50 using a free tastecard, excellent value for 3 courses.Just a pointer, although Trustcard.co.uk says card eligible for 10 people, do double check as manager told us only eligible for 4 people and only 1 card allowed per table, even if more than one of you has a card. He did however agree to make an exception on this one occasion. We will return.I'm giving 5* overall as if judging against what we paid, then it is worth that. I think people forget to put that into context when reviewing and judge on what they expect from a 5 star restaurant.

Thinking about our experience here makes me realise that there were lots of good points.Firstly the food was very good quality. My wife's starter (kippers) she said was excellent, my pear and Stilton was beautifully presented but not that easy to enjoy. The caramelised walnuts were delicious but crumbling the Stilton across the slate with the scattered rocket was simply frustrating. We both had roast pork (they had run out of roast beef, can you believe? )which we both thoroughly enjoyed. Unusually there was a good portion of vegetables but only two small slices of pork. As these were well cooked and the whole plateful lovely and hot we were well pleased.Profiteroles were a very good dessert, while the pastry on the large portion of apple pie was soggy. Nonetheless it was piping hot and went well with the generous jug of pouring cream. When we arrived, they were very busy and were not coping very well. The restaurant is long and narrow and the waiters were clearly under pressure. Having been shown to our table, we sat for over ten minutes before anyone spoke to us. We fully ordered our meal and drinks. The bread allocation arrived. A quarter of a cotton-wool bap (flat bread roll) was served with a small pack butter. Over thirty minutes later the starters arrived but not before we had had to remind our waiter that we had received our drinks. After this, with the numbers in the restaurant dropping, service improved though not fto the point where the waiters had time to speak to us. Perhaps we caught them at a bad time and we feel the food was good enough to try an evening meal in the week, before coming to a conclusion. So a qualified recommendation.

My husband and I had an afternoon tea here on 15th November after being given a voucher. We booked ahead and so when we arrived we were seated and served quickly by friendly staff who were always around if needed. Due to the time of year we sat in the restaurant but there was a lovely courtyard outside. The tea comprised of finger sandwiches, four fillings; ham, cucumber, tuna and salmon. Then there was a large scone each with mini pots of jam, clotted cream, and brownies and carrot cake, served on a slate decorated with icing sugar and delicious strawberries. Presentation very nice. We had coffee with ours. The sandwiches were fresh. The salmon was cut too thick and so not to our taste but everything else was delicious. The cakes were home made, very tasty and the cakes lovely and moist. The carrot cake had a faint ginger flavour which was nice. It was of course very filling so we took a doggie-bag home, which was offered to us at the start and so was good to know.It appeared popular, even in November there were other couples and families coming for tea, and they were setting up for a birthday party tea-for-33 the next day!The hotel and restaurant is very charming inside and out, and right next to the canal if you want to walk the tea off afterwards! The hotel is only down the road from home so I will keep it in mind for the future.

Went to this hotel for a champagne afternoon tea with my sister in law for her birthday. What a massive disappointment. We were advised to go to the restaurant for our afternoon tea. When we entered there was no staff, a manager entered after a minute who showed us to our table. He then asked if we wanted tea or coffee. We both ordered coffee. The coffee was brought out and was so strong I had to ask for extra hot water to weaken it we didnt even get milk straight away. My sister in law loves coffee and it was far too strong for her. The sandwiches were brought out and we're very basic. No salad etc apart from bits of greenery for effect. Then came the "cakes". Why would 2 people eat so much stodge. On the slate was 4 really dry scones, 2 apple type frangipans and 2 chocolate cakes. All really dry with clotted cream in a dish that looked like it had been there for a while because it was dry around the edges and in the dish itself. As for champagne we were lucky to gave got the milk. We were so disappointed that we were glad to leave. This was not a Groupon deal but an experience gift that costs a lot of money. As for service that was it. Food put on the table then no-one to be seen not even for more hot water to weaken the strong coffee. I would never recommend going here. I didn't expect the ritz and thank goodness for that because we certainly didn't get it. The only thing that stopped me complaining was the fact that it was her birthday.

This is our third visit for an annual girlie get together, and as always a wonderful evening was had by all! Even though we use a Tastecard, the friendliness and service of the staff is second to none! It was one of our parties birthday and we had a surprise cake, cards and flowers, which the staff went out of their way to deliver, and present beautifully to our table! Linda was thrilled! The food was delicious and plentiful, as always! The duck was to die for! We have already decided to return again later this year - we can't wait for another 12 months!!

Great setting, lovely building, shame about the food & service. We went as a couple on a groupon voucher. Had to go through reception then out into a courtyard to get to the restaurant. We were given a sheet of paper with 4 starters, & 4 main courses to choose from. I asked for the al a carte menue and was told that was it a new menue was in the process of being compiled. After about half an hour we were shown to our seats. Service was slow and at times sparse to the point we had to get up and go to the bar to ask for water. Not somewhere I would return to ever, service was poor, choice of food bad, mediocre quality and presentation and defiantly no atmosphere. We were presented with the bill and told to go back out of the restaurant, into the courtyard and pay at reception.Perhaps it was a bad night with the wrong chef and waiting staff. Not somewhere i would return in a hurry.

We were given a restaurant discovery voucher as a gift and decided to redeem it at the marston farm hotel. We booked a room at a coat of £91 so that we could make the most of the evening. The room was very nice, bog standard but served the purpose. The restaurant experience however was awful. We were under the impression we would get to sample various dishes from a menu but were told that the five courses consisted of three starters, a main and a pudding, the waitress proceeded to tell us what we would be having - soup, pâté, whitebait, braised beef and mash, lemon tart ( hardly a restaurant experience). She did say that if we did not like anything we could change it, so we asked to see the menu. There was very little choice and the dishes consisted of such things as fish and chips, chicken and mash, bread and butter pudding, chocolate fudge cake. My husband changed his whitebait to a soggy bruschetta and I changed my lemon tart to bread and butter pudding (yuk) and what appeared to be the cheapest packet custard available (i didn't eat it). The soup was served in a coffee cup, the pate was ok but came with a quarter slice of toast, the whitebait was cold, greasy and consisted of more breadcrumbs than fish (i didn't eat it) and as previously stated the bruschetta was soggy. Not much to be said about the beef and lemon tart, they were ok but hardly restaurant food ( my husband ate my beef). The service was ok but we weren't offered drinks or water, we had to ask. We weren't expecting large portions but we were expecting to try a variety of different dishes, what we were offered was very poor, particularly as the cost of the voucher was almost £50. We definitely wouldn't come here again.

Stale bread on my chicken and avocado sandwich, so I sent it back. Second one was from the same loaf. Totally unacceptable standard from an uncaring kitchen. Definitely not recommended to anyone.
