We stayed for 1 night. Understandably the restaurant was closed and strict Covid protocols were in place. However the room looked appealing so we booked. Sadly the facilities were not as we hoped for the price and we felt disappointed. Lots of promise to be a great place with some easy changes.

Eight of us visited for a family reunion. On arrival, the restaurant seemed quiet but as ' Storm Dennis' was in full swing it was hardly surprising! We quickly settled in front of a lovely log fire in the cosy, character filled bar area and enjoyed a variety of pre dinner drinks whilst choosing our meals. The restaurant was smart, very comfortable and provided the perfect setting for a relaxed evening with friends or family. The food was excellent with interesing and tasty combinations and quality, fresh local ingredients. The wine list was reasonably priced and the serving staff attentive and efficient. The whole experience was delightul!

We had a four poster bed.. the room and bed looked great .. but the mattresses was so hard and noisy.. when I managed to get to sleep I woke myself up every time I moved . The walls are so thin I could hear next door having a wee 😯 I did have a lovely salmon and egg breakfast but had to order a side of toast to go with it.

It continues to amaze me that this wonderful restaurant (and pub and hotel) is not rated as one of the top four or five in Bedfordshire. I have eaten there often, with many of my friends, and we are all agreed that the meals are quite exceptional. Interesting dishes, delicious food, perfectly and always freshly cooked, served politely by charming staff. In winter, there will be a roaring log fire in the bar, where there are comfortable seats and, often, really tasty cheese straws. Cornfields is an oak-beamed old pub, full of character - the perfect place to take an overseas visitor. You will not be disappointed by the quality of the food, nor its quantity. High standards, but you get meals, not itsy-bitsy taster portions. The owner and his wife, who is the chef, will make you welcome.

IF you're after mouth-watering food, professional but friendly service and an historic inn - then the Cornfields will be right up your street!I rolled up with my wife, three children and son-in-law to celebrate my 60th.And it couldn't have gone any better. The food is not cheap - but you get what you pay for.I tucked into the beautifully-cooked guinea fowl while the steak, salmon and broccoli pastry all also went down a delicious treat.Sitting deep in the pretty Bedfordshire countryside, you'd be hard pushed to find a lovelier pub restaurant than the superb Cornfields.

We came to Cornfields to have a nice meal to celebrate my mum's birthday. I came away feeling deflated and a little as though I'd been robbed. my meal was a starter of asparagus and poached egg which was lovely, but it was perhaps overly simple for the price at almost £10. Three of us had the Guinea Fowl as a main with a potato rosti and mushroom sauce. While most of the meal was very nice, the meat was overcooked and dry - in my book an unacceptable mistake when the meal is priced at almost £20. The atmosphere in this place was abysmal! They played what sounded like church funeral music which flattened our mood entirely - and it was repeated two or three times. I felt like I needed to be quiet and could not enjoy myself. When we asked the manager if the music could be changed he said it was not possible, as people wanted to enjoy their meals without being disturbed by music. While I agree that music should indeed be at a comfortable level so as not to disturb people, it should also be there in the background to create a relaxing and (God forbid) slightly more jovial ambience. Don't get me wrong, some of the food was very nice... But for a highly priced restaurant which only takes a few tables a night, I expected something a little more special. This was a major disappointment and I couldn't wait to leave.

As others have said, the menu is short but everything is presented and tastes fantastic. This is reflected in a slightly above average price but perfectly reasonable price.I had the Scallops on Creamed Leeks with Crispy Leeks, followed by Roasted Guinea Fowl Supreme the latter being served with a single large piece each of broccoli and cauliflower. Unusual presentation, but it worked! The building itself is very pretty and cosy but it was almost empty, and sadly had an air of bygone successful days. One could easily imagine it full of cheerful, noisy people having a great time.Perhaps it was simply because it was mid-week. Perhaps it rediscovers itself over the weekend? I hope so, because it would be a huge loss if they were to go out of business and close down

This wonderful little restaurant delivers every time. Sited in a charming, atmospheric old tavern, the food is just superb, full of clever ideas, wonderful flavours, exciting appearance and perfect cooking. It's not 'fine dining' only because the portions are man-sized, and the perfectly cooked vegetables are included, not charged as extras. We all agreed that this is unquestionably one of the top five eating places in Bedfordshire, and probably in the top three. Service is prompt, efficient, friendly and unintrusive. Mine host has the perfect quiet helpfulness, and his staff follow his example.Starters of crab cakes, leaf salad with black pudding and scallops with crispy leeks were all delicious. We also all raved about our pork cutlets, haddock and lemon sole stuffed with crab. After desserts of hazelnut meringue and panacotta, we could not resist trying the four British cheeses. All this for less than £35 each. What a lovely evening! A Chilean white complemented the food perfectly. We shall be back!

Excellent olives as the four of us perused the menus. Wonderful starters: scallops and crispy leeks with a sublime creamy sauce and crab cakes declared to be superb by a very discerning diner. Main courses of guinea fowl, steak and vegetarian tart all looked appealing and tasted delicious. Creamy dauphinoise potatoes, new potatoes, chips, broccoli and carrots were all cooked to perfection. Only two of us could manage a dessert, hazelnut meringue and creme brulee both matched the main courses. Our coffees were equally excellent, without a trace of bitterness. This atmospheric, low-beamed pub is just right for an enjoyable get-together with friends. It deserves to be fully booked every night. Service was friendly, attentive and non-intrusive.

We visited Cornfields on Mothers Day as a mixed group of adults and young children. This was our second visit. I like the layout where you can sit on the sofa's to have a pre dinner drink and look at the menu then go through to the restaurant. As others have noted the decor is a little dated and it was cold when we arrived (but soon warmed up!) but that is the only real negative thing I would say. There were 8 in our party and we all had lovely food, freshly cooked, well prepared, nicely presented, we all enjoyed our meals. The wine list was good, nice choices, reasonably priced. The service was friendly and attentive and quite speedy which is always good when you are dining with small people! They don't pour the wine and things like that but that's something that doesn't bother me, we quite like to be given the bottle and just get on with it! They don't have a kids menu but do small portions of anything on the menu for children which I really like because it means they can have real food rather than the pasta or fish fingers and chips. There's a nice little garden with a wishing well that provided hours of entertainment for the kids. They have accommodation here which we didn't stay in but had a good nose through the windows and it looked very nice. All in all it was a smashing visit and we had a great time. I didn't think it was too expensive considering it was all freshly cooked with high quality ingredients £230 for 3 courses plus coffee's, pre-dinner drinks, wine for us all and we Mum's did indulge, soft drinks, 6 adults 2 kids. It's a really nice choice for a Sunday lunch and we will go back again.

Read other reviews on this site and thought we might have found a real gem, how wrong we were. The bar is quaint and welcoming but when you go through to the restaurant it looks like the last time it had any decoration was 20 years ago!The restaurant was colder than the atmosphere. The menu looked good but very pricey the starters came and were very nice but the main courses were just average. My steak was really chewy and poorly cooked I had asked for it medium and it was rare at best. No one attended to our drinks and they just left us while they ran around in the style of Fawlty Towers. There were guests staying who just shook their heads and laughed under their breath. Maybe we were just unlucky but two poor meals out of our party of 4 indicates not.

My partner and I went to Cornfields on Valentines Day. We hade the special set menu which was reasonable at £70 per couple. The food was outstanding, the service was very friendly if not a little bit unprofessional. For example we were seated for 15 minutes before we ordered our drinks. The chefs were coming out of the kitchen to serve the dinners. I understood that two of their waiting staff had called in sick that evening which probably accounts for this. Its almost like you are siting in someones dinning room, and we were a little cold. That said the food really was outstanding. It is difficult to understand why this wonderful restaurant is not more highly rated on TripAdvisor. Personally, I rate it as Number Three in Bedfordshire, and I know only two other restaurants that come near to it for quality of the food, innovative menu and friendliness and efficiency of the staff. I recommend it to everyone who I think will appreciate its quality. It is currently ranked 92/741 in the county and 40/198 in Bedford. IGNORE THESE LOW RATINGS. It is FAR better than those figures suggest. Give Cornfields a try and I am sure that you will agree with me. (No, I'm not related to the owner!)The charges are very reasonable considering the high standard of food and service. The ambience is excellent, quiet even when busy and in an atmospheric low-ceilinged old tavern. Dining at Cornfields is always an enjoyable experience.

Our twin sons had a significant birthday and we took them to Cornfields. This was not the frst time we have visited. We were not disappointed. When one arrives one enters the old bar of the Wheatsheaf, which got my wife and myself reminising about the 1970's and real ale. We had our pre-dinner drinks in the bar and chose our meals. The waitresses were reasonably efficient and polite.MENUThere was a good selection and even my wife said there were two or three items which she would eat. When we arrived at the table, very fresh bread was served with olive oil and butter as required. The four of us had selected three diffent first courses. I had scallops which were served with an incredibly tasty sauce of creamed and crispy leaks.. One of my sons had the courgette, pea and mint soup which he too said was excellent. The other two had stilton, walnut and bacon fritters with a port sauce. It sounds delicious, and they both said that it was.We also chose three different main courses and everyone said that theirs was well cooked and extremely tasty. The sauces with each choice were fantastic.DINING ROOMThe charcter of the dining room is not as good as the bar, it being relatively modern. However the room is pleasant.SERVICEThe service was good, and personal but surprisingly there were very few people dining. OVERALLWe have visited Cornfields on a number of occasions, as a couple, as a large private party, and as a group of people on the Christmas menu. I have previously praised Cornfields' "Seared Scottish scallops on Creamed Leeks with Crispy Leeks" starter, so had it again. Wonderful! I could have chosen any one of the nine main courses on offer - all sounded exciting - but settled for "Fillet of Native Hake with a Herb and Caper Crust on Chive Butter Sauce." What a good choice! This was quite simply one of the most delicious dishes that I have ever eaten. Just superb! The accompanying Dauphinoise Potatoes were also rated as "Wonderful" by my companions, and the broccoli and baby carrots were equally perfect in appearance, texture and flavour. A resounding and quite exceptional 10/10 so far.I ended my meal with a Creme Brulee, which was pleasant enough without being up to the standard set by Raggamuffins in North Devon (creme was lumpy rather than smooth and the top was crisp without being truly glassy). The ambience was just right, with every table occupied by appreciative diners, so there was a quiet background hum of conversation. The owner/maitre d' was, as always, discreetly helpful, and - somewhat to their embarrassment - my partner commented that the busy and efficient waitresses were not only charming, but also exceedingly pretty. The cost, excluding a bottle of Chilean wine and the tip, came to around £30 a head (a very modest charge for a top-class meal). We all had a superb evening and will undoubtedly be returning soon.

A group of seven of us went to Cornfields to celebrate Father’s Day with my 90-year-old father-in-law. And we discovered a gem. Nobody in our party had been there before.Right from the outset service was attentive without being in your face. Indeed, as we went to sit down for the starters, father-in-law decided he would have a starter having previously saying he would not. It didn’t faze the staff that took it in their stride and he had his at the same time as the rest of us. Excellent service. The menu was not large and between us we had many of the items on it, and everyone said what they had was outstanding. I started with a mushroom and tarragon soup with gorgeous warm bread; I followed with duck breast in a cherry sauce – probably the best duck I have ever eaten; finally sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream. All three courses were excellent. The lunch prices were fixed by the number of courses each person had and all were very reasonable.Highly recommended.

My wife and I held our wedding anniversary, for 11 people, at this restaurant. We were both very pleased with the organisation for the whole evening, from our arrival, at the time we wanted, with everyone having a choice from the standard menu, and with good service and attention from the staff. One staff member was partially asleep during the meal, possibly because it was her first evening! Every meal was well cooked, and delivered hot to the table. We enquired with other restaurants for this event, but they either wanted us to select one menu for everyone, or place our orders a week in advance of the event, and all wanted to charge a 10% premium for 'large' groups Not what people want.Cornfields was a breath of fresh air, in all of these respects, and were only too willing to please us.We will visit again. When I paid on the evening, I suggested that the total bill be rounded-up to the next hundred £.The very next morning [a Sunday] I received a call from the restaurant advising me that I had been too generous. Apparently I had misread a 0 for a 6. Poor hand-writing and a slightly inebriated customer obviously contributed. How honest. We will obviously return.

Overall versus a fine dining restaurant this may not be that polished - however, people often forget how much they are willing to pay for hideously poor, monotonous frozen food in chain restaurants especially in London, so based on value alone, this is a great place to eat.Downsides: wine menu slightly limited and a bit pricey, menu is not adventurous, main dining room isn't as pleasant as the bar area, 3 small roast potatoes with main course was very stingy, veal was not true "veal" as you'd get on the continentUpsides: far outweigh the downsides - bar area is gorgeous room with lovely open fire, location is so peaceful, service is very polite and friendly, guests are staggered into dining room to allow for very attentive 1-1 service, quality of food was very good, vegetables with main were fantastic in taste and texture, desserts were outstanding, wine choice (lussac st emilion) was a lovely silky smooth & fruity wineOverall a very pleasant experience, good value (£100 excl service for 3 adults for 3 courses including great wine and aperitifs) and would definitely go back and recommend to others.

Great location & a good menu choice. We have been going here for over 10 years. However on this most recent visit the food while good was not its usual "top draw!" I also noticed it was creeping up in price; so much so it is on a par with decent London restaurants. That said a chilled/relaxed atmosphere with a real fire. Thus a very pleasant country restaurant .For those that don't know Cornfields does have bedrooms available, should one not want to drink & drive!

Cornfields is an absolute gem of a place and the fact that it is frequently filled with happy returning customers is a tribute to the talents and passion of Graham and Janet. All the more so because this restaurant is literally in the middle of nowhere!Honestly, I can't imagine a more sincere and charming host than Graham. However, it's the food that brings us back to Cornfields time and time again. Both the more affordable sunday lunchtime menu and the spectacular full-price a la carte evening menu are excellent! I keep wanting to try a new starter, but invariably plump for the stilton, walnut and bacon fritters with redcurrant and port sauce as the taste is simply sensational. The medallions of fillet steak are a divine main course, as is the pan fried pork tenderloin with cider, Dijon mustard, cream and caramelised apples. I have also tried several other dishes, notably the guinea fowl supreme on potato rosti with wild mushroom, white wine and cream sauce. The desserts are delicious too!Do yourself a big favour and visit Cornfields soon to make your own mind up!

Went here in January 2011. Lovely old bar area, but then seated in a "strange" 1970's extension. All the staff very young, but very able. The owners were eating in the resturant area with friends. With constant "Sibil Fawlty" laughter from the owners wife, along with loud stories about sexual adventures in the Far East, they managed to clear the entire place in about 30 minutes flat.Expensive, tatty, shabby with dreadful owners.Would never return!

From the moment you walk through the door it is clear the owners Janet and Graham are full of passion, have an eye for detail, have great taste and through extensive worldwide travels over the years understand exactly what customer service and value for money is all about.Janet normally hidden away in the kitchen produces some mouthwatering dishes that would put some top London restaurants to shame, using only the freshest of produce, she also is somewhat of a wine expert too (understatement..) .. Graham meanwhile holds the fort front of house and with his charming approach, you will be made to feel most welcome from the moment you enter. The bedrooms are as big as those in a Four Seasons, and the beds as comfortable, for a romantic escape, go for the four poster, Graham had this hand made, Janet meanwhile has a great eye for fabrics, as you will notice throughout.. its hard to believe they have been here 15 years, the place is spotless and very refreshingly furnished throughout, great colour schemes, and looks as new as the day it opened!Graham and Janet just raised the bar.. congrats! Fixed menus start at £12.00 for 2 courses! how is that possible!! a la carte is slightly more, with main courses around the £18.00 mark but well worth it.

I visited this restaurant last night for the second time and I was pleased to discover that the standard had not changed since my previous visit, which was about a year ago. The ambiance greets you as soon as you enter the place with a warm welcome from Graham the owner who has a passion to please everyone who comes in for dinner or as a guest stayimg in the stunning bedrooms. The service was second to none with attention to every detail to make the evening an enjoyable one, from the comfy couches by the open fire when you enter, then the crudities and olives etc., brought to you while you study the wonderful menu with everything fresh and locally bought. The food itself is cooked by Grahams wife who is a very talented chef with wonderful signature dishes included in the menu to tantalise everyone's taste buds. Will I be visiting this restaurant again Yes! definatly. 'A little bit of class' right in the middle of the countryside.

The chef is capable of some really great food, but the whole package isn't consistant enough. The prices are reasonably high (but the ceilings aren't!). We've been there several times on some of the many deals they have offered. Despite these deals being meant to entice you into the main menu, they are usually that little bit lacklustre and don't really hit the spot. They do have £10 weekday fixed menu for the evenings, and that is reasonable value and worth a try. The last time I went, I did notice a younger girl taking charge of the front-of-house and it is possible that she will loosen up the rather starchy atmosphere.Recommend: the coffee and home made chocs afterwards - very good!

This is an impressive restaurant, and when entering into the bar areas being some several hundred years old, you expect something special. And that is what you get in the bar, with exceptional personal service, as you would expect from a restaurant with a great reputation. You are seated in comfortable sofas from which you admire the open oak beams and great history of the building, while being served drinks, and given the opportunity to take time in selecting from a very impressive menu. However something then changes and it feels as if you have been lulled into a false environment, in that as you are taken in to the restaurant, you are transported in to a new extension to the building being square walls, little windows, and cramped seating. The table is finely decorated, but the room while suitably lit, is a mix of old fashioned prints you could buy from MFI, lampshades which don’t match, and just generally feels a little tatty. Despite having been promised a good table as we were celebrating a 66th birthday and retirement, we were positioned right next to the kitchen door which was far from relaxing, and highly distracting because of the noise from the chefs. The food was however very good, well presented, and very fresh local ingredients. We felt the potatoes where a little oily, to which we were informed the cream used was from local farmers, and at this time of year, this results in more oil than normal. We found our inexperience of local produce to cause us some slight embarrassment, but other than that, the food was exceptional. The service in the bar was perfect, however when we were transported to the main restaurant, quality and attention was lacking. We had to chase for someone to take our drinks orders, and when finally the drinks did arrive, we had already started our main course. Other than the wine list is exceptional poor for a restaurant of this standing, the bottle was delivered un-corked, not presented for sampling, and simply left on the table for us to serve ourselves. The water we requested was delivered on a tray, and we were again left to help ourselves to glasses, rather than water glasses being already on the table. Furthermore the main course was delivered over a ten minute period (the partridge must have flown away), so by the time we had waited for the final persons meal to be delivered, much of the other food was cold.Overall this restaurant has great potential, in that it is a fantastic location, has great ambience in the bar, and outstanding food. A little money spent in the restaurant, upgrading their wine menu to a decent range, and employing trained staff to serve, rather than young teenagers, who have no training in dining etiquette would make a massive difference to the experience.By all means visit this restaurant for the food and stunning quality of produce, but perhaps not so much to celebrate a special event.

We eat in the restaurant for two nights (see review as hotel). The menu is varied with a choice of most main dishes. The food is all freshly prepared from local produce and very well presented. There are two dining rooms one of which could be used for a private function. The restaurant is an old inn and has a very comfy bar for a drink before the meal. Most of the diners are regulars which says a lot about the quality and standard of food. We will definitely be going back. See their web site for more information and sample menus. One word of caution mind your head as you move around I hit mine on a number of occasions

Havent been here for a while. Food used to be excellent last time we went for a roast dinner it was nearly cold having waited half an hour for it. Used to be a guy running it full of character and a comprehensive menu that has all changed. Its over the road from us but rather get in the car and find somewhere else
