Really was terrible- I eat most things, but this was inedible. Mash- stupid amount of salt. Lumpy. No butter. Pie- soggy bottom, and meat poor quality mince Floor covered in sawdust, so went all over my belongings. From observation it looks like tourists come here for a ‘local experience’, but I worry that they are leaving thinking that all local London food is like this! With a bit of extra care and attention, it could be much better.

Came in today to celebrate my Mums Birthday, we we're waiting on someone and not sure if it was the owner but she wasn't very happy and looked us up and down like we we're riff raff. We didn't even get a welcome Door was opened so really cold in the shop, when it came to ordering there were 3 lots of us ordering separately. The unhappy one proceeded to scorn us in telling us to sit down whilst only one person ordered, bit hard to do when your all paying separately so felt very embarrassed and awkward. Ordered Treble Double and Double Double 1 Tea got half a cup and 1 Coke, my son ordered Treble Double. The young girl who served me had no gloves and proceeded to dig my Pies out of the trays as the Pies were stuck which wasn't very pleasing to see, made worse as someone came in with a dog and she proceeded to fuss the dog and not wash her hands. Pies were hot but fillings were not equal had one good Pie the other 2 weren't very full. We couldn't leave quick enough, I went up to pay the unhappy lady asked What I had she did the math in her head which was a little concerning and told me it was £31.80 almost had a heart attack. My son was Charged £17.20 for his Treble Double my Dad paid £45 for 3 x Double Double and a Single Double. So almost a ton on Pie and Mash, so not worth it. My poor Mum was so upset at the service as was we all, safe to say you learn the hard way, so if you want the Service we got knock yourself and you can't moan. Personally if people can't appreciate your money I'd avoid like the plaque.

Friends were visiting from America and wanted a real London experience. The building was impressive and seating quaint and charming. There was no sense of trying to anything but a dispensary of good wholesome and filling food. We all had double pie and mash with ‘liquor’ and to a man were mightily impressed and set up for the day. It’s sad that so many of these traditional eateries have been lost. My friends say it was a highlight of their trip as it wasn’t tainted by the snobbish experiences we see in so many other restaurants. The staff were traditionally English and salts of the earth. We will visit again.

Welcome, YouTube London places to eat rabbit hole doom scrollers. You've found a nerdy American review that has had this on the ol bucket list for some time. I want to be kind about my review. In my opinion, this is just another checkbox sort of visit. Having internet infamy for being one of few authentic pie and mash shops remaining in London, I really had to try. It's no frills (at ALL) so you're really going for a bit of history and the environment. A true blue-collar establishment with loyal regulars. I was the only tourist, others were locals and elderly of generations gone by. The lady working the front (Lily maybe) is really kind and sweet, having my pie and mash brought to me when she noticed my cane. The food was not for me. Perfectly edible, but bland in my opinion. The parsley sauce ("liquor") is an interesting taste, you get a hint of the eels... though I didn't have the balls to try the gellied eels. I'm glad I went. But it is not the thing I would ever go back for or desire to try again. It really does seem like a bit of London nostalgia that will soon disappear into the ether.

What’s to say, stopped by as was hungry and seeing pie & Mash thought I would treat myself. Pie was perfect with light crispy pastry on top and a hint of bite on the bottom. Filling was bob on, meaty and tasty. Mash was lovely, slightly under seasoned for my taste but I do over do it on the old S&P. Spooned correctly and crowning the plate for how I think it should be as well. Liquor I am not the biggest fan of but this was decent and probably one of the better ones I have tasted. Chilli vinegar was perfect, sometimes can be a bit too vinegar or leave a sour chilli aftertaste but this was lovely. Service was exactly as expected, no nonsense and warm at the same time. 10/10 in my book and back in the car stuffed and happy.

So cookes called me actually shocked how rude they where to us and they see no issues in this. Apparently this packing is good and that's why they have a 5* food hygiene. I was told I was threatening because I said I had looked on the food standards website for the official guidelines and she said I was trying to close down a small family business because of putting my post of Facebook. She said food is perfectly fine and no one has died from it. I was sending a polite email and wasn't going to put anything on their page but after that phone call maybe I should. A family business should work hard to give the customers a good product and abide by all the laws as stated.

I cannot see how some are saying the food at this cafe was delicious. Because we must have been at a different cafe to these reviews. The person serving told us that she was working in the kitchen and serving food and taking the money in other words doing everything, what about food and higene seem not to be important. Table was dirty and the cutlery. As for the food well the pies came out of a big aluminium barrel meaning they probably were not freshly cooked on the premises. The mash was yellow and totally dry, pie was so salty and greasy and as for the liquor well dark brown muck completely tasteless, even the vinegar was watered down. If the other people who say great pie and mash well all I can say it's like two different cafes. I eaten pie & mash over 60 years and this cafe hasn't got a clue. The best advice I can give is avoid at all cost. I can recommend a pie and mash restaurant cheaper and with clean premises to boot, the place is Goddards at Greenwich once you try them you won't go anywhere else open all week.

Whilst working locally, I popped into F.Cookes, Hoxton Street, London, N1. Now, I had never been there before today and I have heard mixed reviews. But opinions are like a-holes; Everyone has one! Now, my priority is how the food tastes. On that front, no complaints. The pie was meaty & the liquor flavoursome. It had a thicker consistency than I have had from other establishments but that isn't necessarily a negative, just different. Plenty of vinegar and pepper applied and a cuppa rosy. BOSH! The ladies working there were friendly and took my banter and gave a bit back. The shop, whilst arguably needing a bit of T.L.C. has a old school aura, part of which was added to by sawdust on the floor. A lady customer and I got chatting and she commented that she had personally seen the proprietor, Joe Cooke, deboning the meat for the pies, which is, in my view, dedication to preserving Londons heritage. I finished my lunch and bought some pies and liquor to take home. Pricewise, taking into account the fact this is London, N1, I'd say that value for money was very reasonable. Yes, there are cheaper establishments but they tend to be outside London where rent and wages are also less generally. I would encourage people to give their support to this establishment and others like it. If its not your cuppa Tetley, fair enough but remember before you take to social media that this is someones livelihood and if you have nothing positive to contribute, keep your counsel. If you enjoyed it, let people know. Use it or lose it. It's our heritage!Note: Whilst I was there, a customer asked a lady behind the counter if they delivered. The reply was an affirmative & she handed over a business card with the statement that it needs to be £15+ to be viable. Again, please try for yourself!

I saw this restaurant from youtube and I just knew I had to try it out when I came to London. When I entered with my brother, we were greeted by the kind owner (the same one from the video). He was extraordinarily kind and guided us through the menu. We ended up ordering jellied eel, pie mash and more eel. The food is absolutely amazing, I never had anything like that. If I come back to London again, I will come just to eat the jellied eel with the spicy vinegar in it.If the owner ends up reading this, please don't close down the restaurant. The food is absolutely spectacular. I always thought English food wasn't very good, but now I see that I was wrong. Its too bad there aren't that many stores like F Cooke anymore. The food here made my day and trip.

Travelled all the way from Norfolk for this traditional east end meal, something I grew up with and have always enjoyed but F Cookes at Hoxton was awful. Cold mash which tasted like it was made the day before, burnt pies with a filling I would hate to know what was in it. The liquor was awful, the parsley had not been chopped nicely and it had no flavour. The service was appalling and the lack of hygiene quite noticeable. I am surprised we didn't come down with something nasty after eating there, although we did not eat much of it as it was unappetising. The liquor was a disappointment too - didn't look the correct consistency or colour. Saved only by the old-fashioned, war-time feel of the place (sawdust on the floor) and friendliness of the staff. Traditional pie and mash shop, complete with formica tables, and not a gentrified update (bar a vegan pie on offer!). Far from the best culinary experience of my life, but a great experience. Eels nice if you scrape off the jelly! Lovely people running it and hope it continues to thrive

Eels; liquor- irradiated green liquor( how do they do that ?) mashed potatoes-; tiles; benches; a convivial proper Cockney proprietor probably hired from Central Casting- he couldn't be REAL- could he ?; the sensuous, evanescent sense of a London, soon to be only a memory. Go Go Go !!!! English Heritage should include this place on their list.

The worst tasting, least appertising pie & mash i have ever had the misfortune to try. having enjoyed pie and mash for 50 or so years from the age of 3 we, myself and a colleague agreed the liquor was a tasteless sludge the pies were not the best. After a 150 years you think they would have got it right by now

Since moving to London 20 years ago it has been on the list to pie & mash in the East End. This was rated high on searches and did not disappoint. The term spit and sawdust could be applied but it is authentic, tasty, very good pie, mash would be perfect if more buttery but the licor was spot on. Good brew to was it down, 2 meals £10.20. My type of fast food.

superb pie liquor and mash however pies removed from their holding box to the plate by hand then taking the money for the meal with no evidence of hand cleaning thereafter is not acceptable in this day and age.

Scruffy, dirty old place. The nice thing about having tiled walls is that they're easy to clean; they should try it every few years. The lady serving behind the counter was pleasant, but the proprietor (who had a definite air of self-importance) completely ignored us and was not at all welcoming. The restaurant floor is scattered with sawdust like a butcher's shop from the 1970's — why?

Never had the Pie , Mash, Liquor combo before and loved it. Proper old school. Never been anywhere with sawdust on the floor. Not sure where the unfriendly comments came from from other posters , but I found the old lady really nice- friendly and helpful( she'd twigged we weren't local) in choosing . Not sure how much longer places like this will survive for.. so fill your boots now!

When we walked into the shop and said hi, the old gentleman behind the counter looked as startled as if we'd just forcefully barged into his living room and tried to start a conversation.I asked if I could please get a pie and mash to go and he sort of barked "no" whilst staring me down with the coldest expression, then turned to my friend and asked "and for you?". So, thinking he was messing with us, she ordered the same. Again he just said "no" really harshly and we sort of giggled as it seemed the only polite reaction to his blatant rudeness. Now here's the actual bad part: He didn't not move one inch. He just kept staring for a good 20 seconds before we got the creeps and realised he was actually refusing us service. He just sat there, totally stone faced. So we slowly backed out of the store, halfheartedly stopping at the door hoping for him to break the silence and declare he was joking or at least start making our pies, but he just .... stared. He actually looked so angry we did not enquire as to what we had done to provoke his reaction (just two regular looking adults looking to have lunch) and more or less fled the scene. It was positively surreal?Go there for an alternative to the London Dungeon - but definitely not if you want any pies.

I've been wanting to try out a traditional London Pie and Mash shop for sometime so when I found myself in London with a few hours to spare I decided to take the plunge. I Googled London Pie and Mash shops and this one came up as the easiest for me to get to. I got the tube to Hoxton and a 5 mins walk later I found the shop. It really was exactly what I was expecting, this street in of Hoxton is obviously still awaiting gentrification with a very working class high street and other a hipster in site! The shop itself has probably not changed since it opened which was a plus for me. I ordered pie mash eels and a mug of tea, asked whether I wanted hot or jellied eels I went with hot. 2 mins later I was given a very hot plate food, I chose to sit at the back and a large mug of good strong tea was brought to me. The pie and mash and eels were all good but I found the liquor a little bland. However a good dousing with the vinegar and shake of salt and pepper really lifted it and I wolfed down the plateful. Altogether I paid £8.40, however the eels alone were £3.50 so if you just want pie and mash this is really good wholesome cheap grub, especially good if you are in London and on a budget, after something traditional and a little different. I will be back.

My colleague and I wanted Pie and Mash so consulted Google and it popped up this gem. Staff were great and made us feel welcome. Had a chat with Peggy 88 who comes once a week and it really was great. Food was amazing and the jellied eels were the best I have had in a while. Usually get mine West London. The pie, mash and liquor itself was tasty, meaty and flavoursome. The shop has sawdust and they do deliveries it was like a time warp but one that everyone should do. I will be going again.

I've been here before, and it's a stable, classic pie & mash shop, designed for local people. The menu has pie and mash or jellied eels (not too sure about that!). Service is fast. Saw dust on the floor is kinda cool, you don't see many places like that anymore. Also, you have to eat your pie & mash with a fork and spoon (no knives). It takes a bit of getting used to.

Went here to sample what food was like in London many generations ago. Prices are very reasonable for London. Obviously it's not Michelin-starred food but it is genuinely fresh and well cooked. If you see it for what it is, you'll like it. I had pie and mash but am planning to go back one day and man up and try the eels. The sawdust on the floor completes the old fashioned feel. Great that there are still places like this open.

Had Sunday lunch there , it was deeply disappointing. An, at best, average roast but with grim meat and served stone cold. Add in rude staff, tense ambience and grotty surroundings , it’s really not worth the cost. When there are so many fabulous Sunday lunch spots in london there is no reason to choose this one. Mothering Sunday and the restaurant was not quite half full, speaks for itself. I’m not surprised !
