Our first visit. Very goid food, good friendly service, no rush for the table. Certainly worth another visit.

Horrendous experience!!!!! I have celiac disease, l do not choose to be Gluten Free!!!! When booking l told a lovely lady on the telephone about my auto immune disease. The waiter told me the kitchen could adapt most meals for my intolerance, he was quite rude and annoyed at my request. I chose the Duck which was served in a disgusting watery substance, l could not possibly consume it as it was fatty and tasteless. When the bill was presented my £22 Duck meal had been added to the it which was ridiculous so l never paid for it. I will never return again, the evening was completely ruined bad customer service and misunderstanding!!!

Little gem of a restaurant. Food to die for, in a lovely little restaurant, service absolutely spot on, couldn't ask for more. Give it a try, you will be back for more.

Excellent Birthday celebration meal. Food was outstanding steaks cooked to perfection, lamb shank mouthwatering fell off the bone. Loved the snails and frogs legs, mash so tasty, steak sauces Diane and peppercorn so tasty and the creamy spinach to die for. Drinks where lovely and had a zero option. All topped off by outstanding service such a lovely lady doing the waiting on and apparently it was the owner cooking certainly knows his stuff. All in all an excellent experience will most definitely be going again soon.

The most authentic French dining experience you’ll have in Hull and it’s not even close. French onion soup and frogs legs starters- absolutely sublime. Great choice for main meals and whatever you go for you can’t go wrong. Would recommend the trio of desserts for afters if you aren’t already full! Gorge gives exceptional service and we were so well looked after. Best dining experience in Hull, it’s a must visit!

If you like French cuisine, you'll love this place. Traditional snails, scallops and frogs legs for starters (among others) and the most wonderful selection of mains and desserts. I have to say that on 99% of my visits I choose the duck. It's delicious.

A little bit of France down Chanterlands Avenue. Even though the waitress had only started there the evening we visited, she was highly attentive to our needs and went to ask the chef if she didn't know the answer to our questions - no blagging! The food was very good with tasty sauces. Would recomend

Partners birthday meal and I've drove past this restaurant on numerous times, now it was time to try it. Positives. Setting and decor was lovely. The menu was absolutely brilliant. All explained in French & English. Soup for starters, blew my taste buds away. Beef next, and was the most tenter I've ever tasted followed by one of the best deserts I've ever had. Minus's. It was bloody cold in the restaurant and for an hour & a half we suffered a bit. Even though the food was out of this world it did arrive warm rather than hot. The plates weren't warm but cold, hence the food cooling down too quickly. Loved everything otherwise and 100% I will be returning.

The staff at Cognac Restaurant provided excellent food and service for our party of twelve. Everyone had a wonderful lunch with all dietary needs fully catered for.

Six of us went tonight to celebrate our dad’s birthday. Starter, main and dessert were all amazing as was the service. If you haven’t tried it yet would highly recommend and will definitely be going back 😊

Had to knock a star off for service because the website said the 3 courses for £24.95 menu was available but when we tried to order we were told we should have pre-ordered and that the onus was on us to have asked if we needed to pre-order. (Huh?) However, when I had called to book our table there was no mention of having to pre-order. She did tell me we had to pay a £5 per person deposit though... which they then initially failed to knock off our bill. So... only 4 stars for service.

Booked a table for 8 originally but increased to 10 for my mother in laws birthday today at 2pm . We even popped in to pay a deposit and ask if we needed to preorder . Because he recognised us told us not worry about either we regularly visit 3/4 times a year as a large family and then also as couples and smaller groups at other times . Received a call today to preorder food and told to use Facebook menus . Which we all did . 7 of us choose the set menu on your facebook page with a glass of wine . When been asked for our drinks order we asked for our glass of wine on set menu . To be told that menu was no longer available and the wine would not be honoured even after showing the only set menu on your Facebook page has a glass of wine and included and is still online after our complaint (see picture) If some of us had known this we would of chosen off main menu . If it hadn’t been my mother in laws choice of restaurant for her birthday, I think we would of left . The food was nice, but no draught beer , card machine not going only excepting cash or bank transfer . Really disappointed and dont think we will be returning .

Outstanding food. The snails& muscles were cooked perfectly, the pork, duck and pudding was amazing... You need to book if you love great french food the wine was perfect for our dish. Would recommend day in day out. Thank you for such an amazing evening.

What a gem of a find. An authentic french restaurant in an area of Hull, way out of the centre. Not only was the food excellent, the service was also first class, and Clare, hope I've got the name right, couldn't have been more helpful. This was a find on the internet, a pre theatre meal, and will now be our go to place when we visit again. It lived up to the reviews I read on the internet. The French chef , as you would expect, knew exactly his to cook duck!

Been twice, each time served by Claire, she's an absolute gem, cannot fault her professionalism in silver service, whilst being connective & down to earth in personality to the individual. Food & wine was amazing. Swapped out the veg for my fussy taste without issue. Beautiful atmospheric surroundings with fabulous staff serving delicious food and drinks. Spent more than we normally would, but only because we bought deserts and an extra bottle of wine because we didn't want to leave. Definitely will be back :-)

We couldn't fault this excellent restaurant, excellent friendly service, beautiful food, cooked to perfection. My friend had the Duck, for her main course, it was excellent. I had King prawns as a starter, the best I have ever had! I had the Lamb shank for my mains, it was beautiful, we both had Crème bruile for a sweet. Washed down with two lovely bottles of White wine. I would have no reservation about recommending this excellent Restaurant to anyone.

Edit for 3rd trip recently, food is still fantastic, staff still very accomodating - still the best place in Hull! Been twice and both times the food was fantastic. Snails and steak are both incredibly well cooked. Very good red wine and the staff really look after you. I've been when it's been quiet (Tuesday evening) and on a weekend and found the food and service both to be top notch consistently. Creme brulee was cracking too! Highly recommend.

Food excellent, service good shame no draught beer £16 for 4 small bottles (275mm) of lager,40% of menu missing no Fillet steaks really fancied Rossini although the pork tenderloin was top notch and when it came to pay the bill the card machine wasn't working and had to walk to the nearest ATM to get cash to pay bill. Will go back but will ask if the full menu is available when booking

We cannot rate the food or restaurant. As it was shut 03/09/23 we booked a table for 2pm but it was clearly very shut. We telephoned and knocked on the door. My husband booked our table Friday just gone. We had no call to say there was any issues. We wanted to celebrate our 35 th wedding anniversary. Very disappointing.

Maitre d' knew his job and was a pleasant personality. The ambience was excellent until half a dozen Asians came in and the noise from their conversations was, at times, deafening. Until then, we enjoyed some tasteful background music and could hear each other in conversation. We may well have made a poor choice with starters. The pate had the consistency of whipped ice cream and was served with toasted bread which had already been buttered before being brought - with the amount of butter/fat in the pate, this was quite unnecessary. I was told by my better half that the crab cakes did not taste like they had much crab in them. A choice of Tarragon chicken and mustard and honey-glazed chicken for main courses were good choices. They were beautifully presented and accompanied by an excellent selection of vegetables. Crepe Suzettes were chosen for desserts and I have never seen worse. The crepes were fine but the sweet sticky orange sauce did not seem to have seen the Grande Marnier bottle at all! I did wonder why they were not prepared at the table. Such a presentation would have revealed all! Yes, we will go again but will not make the same choice of starters and desserts.

Was a nice experience in germs of the food, cannot fault the food at all l, wish i had taken pictures. Portion sizes are great value for money. The main issue we had with the night was the stock level for the drinks. Most of our options for the wines were not available, and we were not aware of options missing until we asked for them.

Had a meal last night here and it was absolutely amazing! Both me and my husband coming from professional careers in restaurants, can highlight that it's one of the best places we have ever been. We had 3 starters, bread, 3 mains between us, and 2 bi sharer desserts. We are no big people, but seeing all the amazing quality couldn't resist to order it. The prices are very fair for the quality you are getting. If you're around Hull, I wouldn't look further besides this restaurant. On top of the rest, the staff seems very hardworking and cheerful. Went to cognac on a date with my partner, we have spoken about trying this place for months, I had the martini Parisian cocktail and my partner had the French kiss, he found his cocktail lovely but only if it was a dessert cocktail. I quite enjoyed mine it didn’t taste alcoholic though. I had the calamari to start, when it arrived I was surprised as the calamari was bartered for some reason I thought it wouldn’t be anyway, it wasn’t the nicest it did kind of taste like the ones you could get from the premium range at Tescos. My partner had the muscles which where truly incredible. Oh my goodness for my mains I had beef bourguignon which was absolutely incredible, the meat was so lovely and melted in your mouth, my partner had the filet mignon which was amazing and the mash was just amazing. We will 100% be coming back. If you get the chance to go then please go. Also the bar staff and the service staff were very attentive and kind, I couldn’t fault them

Food was nice but nothing special, was like a budget version of french food. French onion soup with just a sprinkle of grated cheese and croutons on it instead of a proper layer of grilled gruyere and parmesan. Side Veg had been boiled within an inch of its life and cherry brandy sauce didn't taste of cherry or brandy. The place atmosphere is nice and cozy, but it's quite small. The food tastes great and service is excellent. However, the tables are too close to each other to the point you can hear the strangers conversations. Also, portions were a bit small, although good quality. What put me off was that we went to a French cuisine restaurant and we were hearing Italian music... No offence, but I believe it's quite expensive in comparison to what it offers.

I came here for the first time in ages with my mum and partner. We were warmly greeted by what I assume was the owner/manager. It was a Friday night and it soon started to get relatively busy. Our order was taken, my choice of pork with blue cheese for my main was promised to be particularly nice. My partner made her choice of some kind of vegetable stack for her main based on the fact it was supposed to be particularly garlicky. My mum chose the lamb for her's and expected the mint sauce to come with it. Our starters were nice, no complaints there. All 3 of our mains weren't as advertised, however. Mine was with a peppercorn sauce instead of blue cheese, my partner's had little to no garlic involved (and no salad as stated) and my mum's was missing the mint sauce. The waitress that brought over the food did so without much care for what we'd been given, no question as to whether we had everything we needed (which we didn't) and so we had no opportunity to say so. As I said, it did start to get busy around the time we sat down, so maybe they were a little overwhelmed that night but still, a little disappointing given the place's good local reputation.

What a gem this place is! The food was exceptional! I had chicken in a creamy tarragon sauce that was utterly delicious, so tender and tasty. And a mixed desert of creme brulee, chocolate pot, macaron and coffee really hit the spot too. A very attentive waitress and a lovely restaurant made the while experience one to repeat, and soon! Went to Cognac for a meal and wasn't disappointed, one of the best Steaks we have had, staff were so friendly and couldn't do enough. Will be back for sure.

To be honest, my meal was fine apart from the mussels I had as a starter we're small and so was the portion of chicken I had as a main course. Nicely cooked and very tasty though. We went as a party of 7, 3 of the party had bad experiences with their food and when they complained, the staff didn't want to know. Won't go back again.
