Having recently moved to the area, Cocoro was one of the first places I wanted to try - I loved the idea of combining a Japanese restaurant and deli. We tried a donburi and chicken katsu curry and were impressed: great quality of food and amazing portions, especially on the curry. The only downside was on another occasion I ordered to collect, and the miso soup had been sitting in the bag with the sushi for a while so warmed up the sushi slightly.

Japanese restaurant with small seating area, so it's advisable to book in advance. Pretty nice food, but not my favourite. Huge amount of variety on the menu, but not so much if you don't eat fish/seafood.

Found this place on the way back from Whittington Hospital on a small stretch of the road where there are no less than three Japanese eateries. Conveniently, it was ever so easy to snag a parking spot - where you can stay for up to an hour. Cocoro has a decent selection of Japanese food, particularly sushi, maki, noodles etc, which are made fresh and on the spot. Of what we ordered, the spider maki was pretty good and authentic but the other maki that we ordered was not great and had a strange taste. The udon noodles that we ordered was good although the beef was tough, which is unfortunately typical in the UK.

Although I’ve still never been to Japan, I’ve eaten a lot of sushi around the world and until now the best I’ve ever had was in Vancouver. Cocoro has now taken the top spot… they put such care and attention into their food, the ingredients are top quality, and the presentation is beautiful. Such lovely people also, such a gem in North London!

The food at Cocoro Highgate is some of the best sushi I have ever had. On top of that, the service is excellent. For these reasons, my husband I are regulars. If you want excellent Japanese cuisine, look no further.

We love Cocoro's sushi - it is fresh and really tasty. Good generous fillings. Especially like the rolls - Californian rolls. Very efficient - they have always had our order ready.

We order food from here at least once a week, portions are ideal and the quality is superb. Apart from food they offer Japanese and other Asian groceries. Staff are quite helpful and attentive if you ever decide to drop in. 100% recommended.

I'm really shocked by these good reviews. This is based on delivery only. I've ordered twice from them. First time the Miso Soup was completely cold. It's as if it was never heated and the Nigiri was average, too much rice. The second time I only ordered Nigiri and it was truly awful. The salmon was very thickly sliced and sliced incorrectly - there were parts that were inedible. Sushi should melt in your mouth. Also, too much rice and it was very hard, like it was made hours earlier and kept in the fridge. I wouldn't go here again or recommend.

I have been loyal to Cocoro for ages and the sushi is wonderful, and I will always go back for more. However, on a recent dinner there we noticed that (as it's also a deli) the chef came upstairs and took a few bags of frozen pumpkin croquettes and gyoza from the freezers behind us – I'm not sure about the gyoza but I'm fairly sure those pumpkin croquettes were fried downstairs and served to us about 5 minutes later. I'm glad Cocoro is so busy at the moment – they deserve it – but this is the first time I've thought...wait, what??? I'm not sure if serving ready-made frozen croquettes (at £5 for two – when there are about 10 in a bag of frozen ones that can't cost more than £5) is really in keeping with the otherwise high standard of this place. I was really surprised. Maybe I was wrong, or maybe they're just trying to keep up with demand? In any case, it was disappointing. I'll still go again for sushi but I think seeing that happen put me off quite a bit. Though maybe it's common practice and I'm just naive!

It can happen that the restaurant you are visiting is not really authentic. This place keeps its promise to deliver real Japanese food and service. Almost the entire staff is Japanese and the food- quite close to what you can experience in Japan. You cannot find all you might look for, but what available, is tasty and ... Japanese.

I've been to this place recently twice for lunch. I only had chirashi don and oolong tea and in both occasion I was really happy with my bowl ! It was around £15 and for me the right amount of food and very tasty. I don't think I would choose this restaurant for dinner but I will go back for lunch when in the area!

I too was a fan until something went quite wrong. I had been supporting this local restaurant since its opening. It was not until several months down the line that they decided to give me a loyalty card. The options they told me, when the card was fully stamped, were either to have the two offers available on the card or a £10-reduction on my next meal. Things went well after that and I was always happy with the food and the nice staff. One weekend, we turned up for lunch and, although my card was fully stamped we agreed with the waitress that I would use up my allowance of £10 for the next meal The following week, when I turned up for lunch and handed it out my card, the waitress told me that the owner had decided to change the rule, therefore I could no longer benefit from a £10-reduction. Rather upset, I carried on having my lunch and paid fully for it but tore up the card and asked the waitress to hand it back to the owner and tell her that she would see less of me. In my opinion, this attitude is not correct as the waitress should have allowed me to use my allowance for the last time and explain to me that the new rule would apply from the nest time onwards. Since that day, I have stopped to support this place which no longer deserves my loyalty. I would not call this good customer service.

I have only tried sushi twice before & I met a friend in Highgate. London who liked to try sushi. The venue is also a delicatessen with a small restaurant at the back. We went and asked about different sushi and we had a fresh lovely sushi which now makes me wonder why I have not tried this before at a better venue. The staff were very helpful and our lunch was impressive !!!

Came here on the high recommendation of a trusted foodie friend and was very impressed. The sushi was delicious - every bit as good as I've eaten in Japan - and our starters were also very appetising, my only criticism being that my udon tasted like the dry cheap dry version and the 'sour plum' broth a bit powdery. However, everything else made up for this and the bottled Kirin beer (always a favourite!) was very reasonably priced making it great value for a meal for two. Also their deli area is well stocked so it's great there is now somewhere selling Japanese food, snacks and sake in the area. There are only three or four tables so probably worth booking in advance but i'll certainly be back.

We enjoyed our meal at Oita, thought the service was very friendly and the food served, very tasty indeed. If you are ever in the area you should try this place.

I came here on a Saturday evening for a nice meal with some family and everything was great, the food was amazing and great value (especially the squid, diced prawn tempura and the banana tempura). All the staff were really great too ensuring we were taken care off, and it showed how passionate the owner was towards her restaurant. Definitely recommend for a nice relaxed meal with amazing food.
