We had a nice snack there. The staff are very friendly and extremely interesting to see the archaeological dig at the back. Prices reasonable. Worth going to.

Two excellent and inexpensive bacon rolls to eat in with a tea and a coffee. Staff friendly, tea served in a mug ready to drink, not supplied in kit form as in so many places. While you're there take a look at the fascinating Roman archaeology that gives the premises its name but seems to not be advertised other than in the cafe itself: the foundations of the gateway to the Temple of Claudius revealed beneath glass floors at the back of the main cafe.

Very close to the castle entrance, super friendly and informative staff, and a fantastic rear area with glass floors to view the Roman foundations below

It's now called The Holy Bagel and we went for coffee only. I wished I hadn't had breakfast as I found out they do salt beef bagels/paninis and other yummiest.

I live just outside Colchester, but when I visit town I always pop in for a coffee, the place has the best cafe floor ever, a glass floor covering Roman archeology , very interesting, Alison who works there will sort you out with drinks and lovely cakes. I also have the satisfaction that some of the profits go to a well deserved local charity. Keep up the great work.

Popped in today for a couple of take away coffees and cold drinks for the kids to take into castle park. The lovely lady working there showed us the absolutely amazing ruins through the back and then made us our coffees. The food looked good and we will definitely be back to have a try of some cake next time!

After failing to get a cool drink after walking miles as cafes were too busy, this was a real find. The staff were so friendly but also their service was spot on. Their prices are affordable for families on a budget. Whether ;you want a meal or just to sit with a tea, coffee or a cold drink, this is the place.

Came across this delightful cafe which does great food and coffee. It also has glass floor revealing the oldest ruins in Colchester: the ancient ruins of the temple of Claudius. This cafe also supports the homeless back into work. All the staff involved in our service were friendly and the food and coffee was fantastic!

This place has been reopened and money earnt is given to helping the homeless. Vic is doing a good job making Coffees, sandwiches, jacket potatoes to fund the new double decker bus providing shelter for homeless people in Colchester. Part of the Cafe houses a museum with remains of the Claudius Gateway!

Great place and absolutely fantastic Roman remains beneath the cafe. This is the largest or at least one of the largest arcades outside Rome.

We stopped here for a little bit to eat after the castle. Very small selection and a bit pricey but does have a glass floor where you can see roman wall.

Large cafe just across from Castle Museum. Tea, coffee, cakes & simple meals. Also contains remains of foundations of Claudian Gateway & Portico. Also large screens and displays showing interpretation of buildings. Very pleasant young man serving too. Well recommended.

This is a nice little coffee shop with the usual teas/coffees and tasty cakes. It's quiet, was fairly empty mid week morning and has an interesting museum room with a glass floor viewing of the Roman Temple foundations. (If I remember correctly).

The best breakfast I have had in a long time. The staff are lovely and welcoming too. I’d give it 10 stars if I could!

We had a lovely time, excellent food. In addition to seven courses there was cocktail with mocktail option, and petits fours. Amazing value at £35 per person without wine; limited choice of god value wine by glass or bottle. Neither wine flight nor pudding wine. Menu in attached photo. Small plates but adequate portions; delicious bread, I believe home made. Parking slightly difficult (it was a busy night at the Institute) and a longish queue for compulsory name badge. The students charmingly trying their best, no offhand service here. Service charge voluntary and I'm happy to pay it.

Absolutely disgusting service. We spend £122 and never received our order. When calling, we got hung up on twice and told they would be out of pocket. We never got our food and now are out of pocket. Wouldn’t recommend and won’t give up until we get our money back. Terrible company.
